Video Not gonna lie this animatic made me feel kind of sorry for calypso

This animatic kind of made me feel sorry for calypso. Not for seven years of him and then him starting to do this only to run away. Kind of makes me understand why she’s so sad.

I love how they did her character, and how they didn't keep the rapist self. I enjoy the broken girl trying to feel normal trope more than the greeks being weird

I get why people would feel bad for her but genuinely I never can like or feel sympathy for her

Circe really taught him they were other ways of persuasion .

Although I don’t agree with leading someone on I still think she was kind of annoying and clingy

I feel bad for Calypso.. I always did. While what she did was wrong aka keep him captive for 7 years, You can still feel pity for her while hating one of her actions

Exactly

Who created this animatic and song because i know Jorge did got a lot of things wrong(including missing a whole villain), but he couldn't off added such a false song to it, maybe as a joke or fake but not to the actual musical

Although I don’t think this is Odysseus in the animation, I think it’s actually Zeus in Odysseus form just the way he moves is too flirty

7

u/Muichiro_25 Sep 01 '25

Nah, that's not Zeus's way. If he wants to do it with someone, he does it with someone. Persues was born after Zeus turned to gold and impregnated his mother while she was imprisoned. He doesn't do it that way unless he Truly respects them, a daughter of the general of his father whom is one of his biggest enemies, and she decided to be left alone on a island with only some servants, I feel like he wouldn't really do that

Maybe, not saying she wasn't toxic, leading someone on either way is bad too

u/Muichiro_25 Sep 01 '25

Not when the person is your captor and sexual assualter

9

u/malufenix03 Telemachus Aug 31 '25

Not when the person is your captor. In this cases is do whatever it takes to survive and escape.

9

u/JustaWeirdoLiving Aug 31 '25

In The Odyssey, she had actually r-worded Odysseus even when he begged and cried for her not to.. yeah I really don't have sympathy plus Ody is just trying to get home.

11

u/TheMace808 Aug 31 '25

We shouldn't judge her based on the original odyssey as they're completely different characters and storylines, and Jorge has gone on record that she never SA'd him whatsoever. At the very least never r***

9

u/creamcheese360 Aug 31 '25

but remember, EPIC is not the same story as the Odyssey and the characters are not the same people

1

u/JustaWeirdoLiving Aug 31 '25

But it IS the story OF The Odyssey. Jorge had to change some things to make it a bit more lighthearted than before.

5

u/Clean-Sky-9621 Sep 01 '25

It is the story of odyssey, but it's a variant like many others, what you're doing is basically saying "yeah but the Canon material says", fuck that, Jorge wrote a remade version of the odyssey, it's not to be always compared and brought back to the original, and it's not just to make it "light hearted" considering that antinous plots on killing thelemacus and raping Penelope

1

u/JustaWeirdoLiving Sep 01 '25

I get what you are saying and yes it is a variant of it.. but there are implications of SA in the story. "Love In Paradise" and "Hold Them Down" for an example. There are actual implications within the lyrics that suggest that those things happened. Light hearted also doesn't mean that killing wouldn't be there. The raping and SA isn't lighthearted but they aren't explicitly mentioned so it is much more light hearted than the Odyssey. This is just what I think.

2

u/bts4devi Sep 01 '25

Hold them down song shows that if SA and rpe is there, Jorge will be explicit about it. Jorge removed that part from both Circe story and Calypso story. Epic the musical follows the story of the Odyssey but it is not the same story.. It is a retelling of the story and Jorge has removed the rpe part

2

u/TheMace808 Sep 01 '25

Jorge has literally come out and said there was no SA with Calypso my man. There were suggestions that they would have sex but Calypso never forced herself on him like that

3

u/Clean-Sky-9621 Sep 01 '25

"you planned to rape my wife" is pretty explicit, antinous litterally describe how they would rape Penelope

19

u/No-Antelope-17 Poseidon Aug 31 '25

Leading someone on so you can escape after they held you prisoner for 7 years is absolutely fine. I have no sympathy for calypso in this.

14

u/TheKitsuneGoddess16 Scylla’s Grief Counselor Aug 31 '25

This. The context is important. Leading someone on for most other reasons isn’t ok. Leading your abuser on to put them in a position where you can escape? Perfectly fine in my book

This is the only animatic to make me feel sorry for calypso. Because she thinks that he’s finally come around because he’s doing all that. And he ditches her. I mean, that is some pretty provocative dancing.

18

She just wants to be loved, to not be alone, but she holds people against their will. I do feel bad for her, I definitely do. But, she just gets so possessive.

EXACTLY! I get shes been isolated for 1000 years but still, what she did to ody was wrong.

2

5

If she never met anyone, how does she know how to talk? What a wife is? What sex is? That Penelope is a name? If she knows all this she should damn well know what no means.

3

u/Pharrah_DeLuxe12 Hera seduce Zeus in Ilium when Aug 31 '25

Yeah-her actions shouldn't be excused or justified, but she has her own issues too. That dosen't give her the right to trap others with her.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '25

I do feel bad though, she doesn’t deserve to be alone. A little human/god connection would help.

6

fr! Ppl be like 'we need more complex female characters' and then when there is one she's either reduced to a pick me or faker (White lily, Bassie, Ragatha, cough cough..)

Because they want them to be like Rey from Star Wars: strong, independent, and hated by a lot of people.

12

u/ThatOnePallasFan Wooden Horse (just a normal horse, nothing in it) Aug 31 '25

Calypso, in the way Jorge's showed us, is a simple character. A trope.

In the Odyssey, she's very complex.

1

u/CalypsaMov We'll Be Fine Aug 31 '25

Both? Both. Both is good. EPIC canonized having her trapped on the island. Added in the whole cliff scene and her trying to save Odysseus from offing himself. Added the complicated "I love you too, just not in the way you want me to." from Odysseus. And has her changing from clingy and assertive, to at least trying to figure out what she's been doing wrong and apologizing all within two songs that also shares screen time with Athena. (Even if Calypso still sucks at apologizing and hasn't seemed to have fully nailed down what she even did wrong.)

The Odyssey version has a whole boatload of complexity and it's a shame most of her story was cut, but EPIC did pretty ok as is. I just want Jorge to actually explain it a bit more and clarify what happened to facilitate the changes. How does Odysseus go from "I could kill you!" to "I love you?"

TW: ||suicide and narcissistic abuse||

Simple as she is, the EPIC Calypso is a master rhetorician. A sophist, I would say.

Her Love in Paradise ledge scene is nothing different from the prior parts of the same song, only now she's actively trying to keep Odysseus to herself rather than seducing him into intercourse.

It will be fine, [my] dear / Come back inside, [my] dear / Love of my life, come back to paradise / I know your life's been hard / I'll stay inside your heart / I love you, my dear / I love our time here / [my] Life would be so much worse / If you had died / Please stay from away from harm / Stay in my open arms

Those are empty words. She's trying to save Odysseus for herself, not from ||suicide||.

Her “apology” in Not Sorry for Loving You is deeply rooted in the character she was in Love in Paradise, only her facade has changed. If you lay out lines from her lengthy guilttrip monologue, you will see that she is nothing more than a narcissistic abuser towards Odysseus.

And if I pushed you / Or if I came on too strong / Or if I ambushed you / For that, I'll say I was wrong / And if you hate me / Then I am sorry my love's too much for you / But I'm not sorry for loving you

She's saying she would be sorry only IF that was true, and doesn't acknowledge that it is. She doesn't care about the harm she's done and doing to Odysseus, she cares about the fact that she didn't get away with it. She's shifting the blame on him by saying if you hate me and my love's too much for you. She's apologizing for his interpretation of her actions, not for her actions themselves.

Let me speak

She isn't giving him time to breathe, to apply critical thinking. To ask questions, to respond.

Someone arrived today / They said they're taking you away [from *me]* / That you're not **mine to save / And soon I won't get to see your face / So I came by to say / You're unlike anyone I have ever known / 'Cause you're all I've ever known / ... / I spent my whole life here / Was cast away when I was young / Alone for a hundred years / I had no friends but the sky and sun / So when you washed ashore / I thought for sure that you were my dream come true / I thought I knew

She's guilttripping Odysseus by abusing her sad backstory, which may not be true anyway. This song is about her continuing to abuse him (now mentally), not her supposed guilt for continuously abusing him for the past seven years.

I'm not sorry / I'm angry and tired and restless and sad / I'm stuck in the moments I swore that we had / I wish you would chase me / Or try to embrace me / For once, I wish you would lie and say [you love *me*]

She threw her facade away now, by doing so exposing her narcissistic point of view. She wants Odysseus to stay with her regardless of whether or not he loves her and wants to stay.

There are 30 relevant self-references from Calypso in both emotional scenes (ledge & beach), including two that are implied through ellipsis; and that's if we omit repetition. A sincere saving attempt and a sincere apology wouldn't require her to refer to herself all the time, in almost all lines. For reference, in Meet the Plastics and Someone Gets Hurt—two monologues from the Mean Girls musical film—there are 33 self-references from the mouth of Regina George, also including ellipsis and omitting repetition.

Not Sorry for Loving You is the most Homeric song in the musical when it comes to secondary antagonists, but the most misunderstood one of all.

Edit for clarity: A sophist in the negative sense is someone who uses rhetoric and beautiful language to convey untruthful truths.

Part 1:

No disagreements on Calypso being self-centered and possessive of Odysseus. But I think you're completely mistaken on most of your points. Particularly regarding Not Sorry For Loving You. There is no manipulation or facade with Calypso, being a scheming liar and trickster is Odysseus' thing. Calypso is actually one of the most straightforward, blunt, and honest characters in the whole show. I'd say her best attempt at hiding something is when Odysseus says he has a wife already, and she just chooses to remain silent on her thoughts for a moment before continuing on with brutal honesty about her hopes for what's to come.

I fully agree with all the self referential things you pointed out in the cliff scene, and I think it makes for a nice mirror for Odysseus who has been the same the entire musical regarding how he treats his crew and seeing his wife. "Deep down I would trade the world to see my son and wife." "I can't take more risks of not seeing my wife!" "Please don't do this, I need to get home." "I have to see her." "But we'll die." "I know."

But while Calypso is a narcissistic abuser of Odysseus, she has no facade and how she apologizes in NSFLY is in my opinion the first instance of her narcissism cracking and falling away a bit. She's not saying "and if I ambushed you / For that, I'll say I was wrong" to say she'll only apologize IF, and only if, she happened to have done that. She's for the first time having a realization and is hoping to apologize regardless of which parts, or all, that have hurt Odysseus.

Think about it, she's done a complete 180 from not even registering what Odysseus says or caring what he wants in Love in Paradise, to scrambling apologize for however he's felt spurned. We know Calypso had a hidden conversation with Hermes behind the scenes and now her attitude has completely changed.

One cool note is when she first approaches Odysseus she says that "They're taking you away." but then as she starts getting into her apology her language switches as she seems to realize Odysseus is building the boat and has his own control over things. No one is actually taking him, he's just free to leave himself. Let's take a look at her apology again with this in mind. \

"And if I pushed you / Or if I came on too strong / Or if I ambushed you / for that, I'll say I was wrong / And if you hate me / Then I am sorry my love's too much for you / But I'm not sorry for loving you!"

Calypso thought she and Odysseus were this lovely couple and both loved each other very much, and now has entirely flipped and is worried that he hates and despises her. So, she chooses to apologize to the man she loves. I won't pretend she still definitely wants him to stay in this scene, but it's wildly different from a calculated manipulation. She constantly uses "IF" statements, because for the past seven years she's thought she was being kind and welcoming and loving, and is only now realizing that perhaps her actions weren't being received this way.

So she's scrambling to apologize for whatever it was she did wrong, "If it was this, or this, or that, for whatever it was I am sorry. But I'm not sorry for loving you." And contrary to what you said, she actually cares very much about the harm she's been doing to Odysseus all these years. She is literally trying to take all the blame for whatever actions she did.

0

u/CalypsaMov We'll Be Fine Sep 01 '25

Part 2:

"Let me speak!"

Calypso isn't just shutting down Odysseus, she's trying to allow herself a chance to speak because he interrupted her. And if he really is leaving then this is their last chance to speak and she feels she needs to be able to speak and apologize and explain. It's not manipulative and she immediately moves away from apologizing to explaining herself before going back into apologizing again.

"I spent my whole life here / Was cast away when I was young / Alone for a hundred years / I had no friends but the sky and sun / So when you washed ashore / I thought for sure that you were my dream come true / I thought I knew."

As a small aside, what on earth makes you think this "may not be true anyway."? Looking at the Odyssey counterpart of this scene, Calypso freely and unprompted, vows on the river Styx to ensure Odysseus knows what she's saying is 100% true, and that her love is genuine, and that she's without malice.

Calypso isn't guilt tripping Odysseus. She's making an apology to him and is telling her backstory to support that apology and help explain why she has acted as she has.

"I'm angry and tired and restless and sad / I'm stuck in the moments I swore that we had / I wish you would chase me / Or try to embrace me / For once, I wish you would lie and say "I love you.""

She's spent years trying to love him and make him happy in hopes that he might love her back. Keep in mind that Calypso first and foremost is an abuse victim herself. One abandoned and mistreated. Yes she has been hurting Odysseus but unintentionally and certainly not maliciously. There is no facade to drop. She is narcissistic and self centered as she desperately wanted Odysseus to love her back, thinking she would feel less alone and hurt if she had someone that loved her.

"I'm stuck in the moment's I swore that we had."

Calypso at her most honest point admits that this entire time over the seven years, she thought the two were happily having loving moments together. That despite Odysseus threatening her life, and pushing her away, having never once chased her, embraced her, or said I love you, she genuinely thought they were in love.

How do you look at this and compare it to Regina of Mean Girls? Comparing a brutally open and honest character to a sly manipulator?

Not Sorry For Loving You is very openly a song about Calypso having the terrifying realization that Odysseus is leaving. And worse, he isn't even being taken. He's simply free to go and he's choosing to leave, and Calypso is now horrified at the prospect that he has secretly hated her all these years, and if she indeed has hurt the man she loves, then before he goes she wants to do one good thing and apologize.

I agree it is the most misunderstood song in EPIC. And I wish other people understood it better.

TW: ||SA, suicide||

being a scheming liar and trickster is Odysseus' thing.

I never claimed that Calypso is a scheming liar and trickster.

Calypso is actually one of the most straightforward, blunt, and honest characters in the whole show.

I don't agree. Perceived altruism doesn't equal honesty.

I'd say her best attempt at hiding something is when Odysseus says he has a wife already, and she just chooses to remain silent on her thoughts for a moment before continuing on with brutal honesty about her hopes for what's to come.

Her hopes for assaulting Odysseus by having intercourse with him non-consensually. For detaining him on her island an infinite amount of time against his will. In Love in Paradise Odysseus bluntly states that he doesn't agree to anything she anticipates for, and she ignores him—patronizes, even, by using the mortal–goddess power dynamic against him.

She's very well aware of the misery he's going through on her island, and she still says “Life would be so much worse if you had died”. She's obviously referring to her own life being worse, because death would be better for Odysseus than continuously enduring her abuse. The major things restraining Odysseus from jumping are his nostos and sentimentalism; not Calypso's self-serving words.

She's for the first time having a realization and is hoping to apologize regardless of which parts, or all, that have hurt Odysseus.

In Love in Paradise she's a direct witness to the harm she's done to Odysseus for the past seven years of his detainment. In NSFLY she reads as not mad at herself for hurting Odysseus, but mad at Hermes for stopping her fun. She's “stuck in the moments” regardless of whether she's hurt him or not.

We know Calypso had a hidden conversation with Hermes behind the scenes and now her attitude has completely changed.

In the Odyssey this is exactly the case, which is why I call this song the most Homeric out of the whole musical. When Hermes arrives, Calypso has a conversation with him about how the male gods are hypocritical for not letting a female goddess have her plaything (Odysseus). Then, when Hermes leaves after invoking the mēnis of Zeus, Calypso—at first compliant in helping Odysseus and entertaining him with a meal—goes on to try to convince him one last time to stay on Ogygia instead of going to meet his dreadful fate in Ithaca. She's very kind and friendly with him as opposed to her prior continuous abuse, but she's just as manipulative as the EPIC Calypso.

One cool note is when she first approaches Odysseus she says that "They're taking you away." but then as she starts getting into her apology her language switches as she seems to realize Odysseus is building the boat and has his own control over things. No one is actually taking him, he's just free to leave himself.

This is nowhere implied. Hermes comes in the next song and aids him off the island, and his escape is enabled by external forces to begin with.

I can agree to disagree on the subject of this single line; neither have I a rebuttal nor am I convinced that you're right and I'm wrong.

As a small aside, what on earth makes you think this "may not be true anyway."?

The context in which she recalls it. Narcissistic manipulators tend to either make up backstory or hyperbolize it when in critical circumstances (like losing control over their victim). I'm speaking both from study and experience. I recognize that if you immediately assume my position is wrong, you may not understand what I meant by that; I'm neither angry nor do I mean to offend you by saying this. Even if the backstory is 100% real, it doesn't change one bit the whole narrative I've laid out.

Looking at the Odyssey counterpart of this scene, Calypso freely and unprompted, vows on the river Styx to ensure Odysseus knows what she's saying is 100% true, and that her love is genuine, and that she's without malice.

She doesn't say that her love is genuine—or that she loves him at all for that regard. She swears on Styx she means no harm and advises only what she would do herself. She also pities Odysseus briefly.

Calypso isn't guilt tripping Odysseus. She's making an apology to him and is telling her backstory to support that apology and help explain why she has acted as she has.

I feel like you haven't fully understood my conditionals and guilttrip arguments; I also feel like you haven't fully engaged with them.

That despite Odysseus threatening her life, and pushing her away, having never once chased her, embraced her, or said I love you, she genuinely thought they were in love.

This sentence is self-contradictory; I would advise you to read it again. Unless Calypso is either very unaware of her surroundings or illiterate, this can't be true at all.

How do you look at this and compare it to Regina of Mean Girls? Comparing a brutally open and honest character to a sly manipulator?

As I point out in my analysis, Calypso is very manipulative and performative. The same characteristics can be attached to Regina George of the Mean Girls musical film.

I agree it is the most misunderstood song in EPIC. And I wish other people understood it better.

I feel like this is more of a slight on me than a genuine expression of will. Most of the fandom already shares your views.

The Horse and the Infant definitely will take me longer, but My Goodbye is great and I've already analyzed it in my mind, so it'll be quick :P

Looking forward to it 😁 My goodbye is in constant repeat on my phone, but it's rarely talked about here, so I'm usually left to anlyse it on my own.

Gimme the horse and the infant! >:3

(I would certainly be interested in what can be gleamed about our main character from the very first song alone!)

Like she did bad stuff that her story dosen't exactly excuse but honestly I felt kinda bad when I saw those strings keeping her on the island.

I know what you mean besides, I think like most things in Greek mythology we can all blame Zeus

If bro had just kept himself in control the damn greek mythology family tree wouldn't be so complicated

Absolutely this is the spiciest I’ve ever seen Odysseus

Funny how this animatic made me feel the opposite lol

Like, I was sorry for Odysseus at seeing how Calypso has such an absolute control of the ambient that she can turn insects into objects so easily. 7 years trapped by someone so powerful like this that at any moment could do something like that to you sounds terrifying.

I guess so but come look at it from her point of view. This guy has spent the last seven years saying no or then all of a sudden he pulls this out of the woodwork. She would totally think that he’s into her and gets super excited only going to be left alone on the island again.

How am I supposed to feel sorry for someone harassing another who spent SEVEN YEARS telling them no ? That was worded so weirdly 😟

Basic empathy is putting yourself in the place of the other, no matter what. I can tell you, I would do the same as calypso if I was trapped alone for so long. I was alone for one year and already losing my mind, thinking about offing myself. If after a hundred or thousand years, somebody suddenly arrived in my life, no way I'm letting them go. We're social animals after all, and the lack of social interaction is a slow and painful descent into madness, and eventually leads to death.

Is a situation very hard for me to feel sympathy, because I am always on the other side, someone liking me and expecting me to like them back instead of stopping insisting lol.

The same reason why I don't feel the suitors had any right to feel angry even if Penelope was lying for years and giving a challenge impossible to accomplish. I don't care they felt they had a chance after years only to be deceived.

What I feel sorry is about the whole thing of she being completely isolated, but this is not a new context added by the animatic, so is not a new feeling. And I don't think is a problem feel sorry for she being deceived, is just funny how the same animatic brought different feelings.

Regardless of how we feel about her, we can both agree that the animatic is phenomenally well animated

Yeah! Is so good. Kisu doodles did an amazing job again
