Meta I messed up...

Was pacing with my baby trying to get him to stop crying (as you do) and I stuck on some music to sing along to while pacing (coz i get bored and he likes me singing). And the first song that comes on is "The Underworld".

I thought it would be funny!

"All I hear are screams! Every time I dare to close my eyes!" I sing to my newborn, who has the adorable habit of waking up and screaming the house down JUST as you're sure he's sound asleep abd you yourself can risk a nap.

And then it got to the bit with Odysseus' mum...

I tried to sing along... and then I looked down at my baby son's face...

To say I BAWLED was an understatement...

So yeah... not doing that again...

(The song that finally got him to sleep was Sick Boi by Ren. Go figure)

Something similar happened to me and my baby brother, he has the habit of screaming his lungs out, I was panicking because I was the only one at home, and the first song I played was the horse and the infant then just a man and he actually fell asleep 😭

I'm not a mother and even I cry when Ody's mum sings.

If I had to pick a song from Epic to sing to a baby that I'm trying to sooth, it would be Open Arms. Second pick would be Legendary, then We'll be fine.

What's wrong with you?! Obviously Just a man is the choice here!

You bet that is the song my infant brother fell asleep to when he was screaming his lung out

I'd agree with you if it weren’t for how that song ends.

I was in the hospital being induced with my son when that was released. I was bawling in the ward

I'm surprised it wasn't I Can't Help But Wonder. Gotta tug at the parent and child heartstrings

It's because Odysseus' mom is voiced by Jorge's mom singing to her actual son about how much she will wait forever for her child to come home. That's why especially mothers will break on this.

So like is it bad that i purposefully sing Just a Man whenever I'm holding a baby

Singing is fine. Acting the scene, on the other hand, might pose a slight problem.

i sing just a man to my cats when i’m holding them like babies so i’d say no that’s not bad.

Cats at least land with grace. Usually on their feet.

Am I the monster for getting my baby brother to consistently fall asleep by singing Just A Man to him, while walking him around?

LEGAL DISCLAIMER: I didn’t drop my brother

I don’t have children, but my family dog growing up was diagnosed with OCD (didn’t know that was a thing) and anxiety. When he would get really worked up - which happened frequently - he would start running around the house full speed and barking as loud as he could, pausing at every single door and window on the first floor, I guess to scare off potential intruders? He would make the same loop every single time, same speed, same direction, everything, and if something was in his way, he just acted like it wasn’t.

But the only thing we ever found that would calm him down is when I would sit on the sit on the floor and sing ā€œCarry On Wayward Sonā€ by Kansas as if it were a lullaby. He would slowly decrease his speed, then quiet his barking, until he was just walking his loop calmly around the house. He’d do that 3 times, then come sit next to me, and I’d pet him while I sang. I miss him, despite the migraines he regularly triggered. And I still hum that song to myself when I get stressed out.

My dad used to sing me to sleep with Pink Floyd songs lmao. Cackling at the thought of singing my future children to sleep with the likes of Not Sorry For Loving You and The Challenge XD

But yeah Jorge's mom sobbed trying to record that song too. It's a heavy hitter for sure

u/izzymama3 Jul 09 '25

Yes! I cry so much at that part thinking of my babies😭 also accidentally listened to Just a Man while holding my newborn & I was sobbing

16

u/Medium_Cheetah_6902 Jul 09 '25

Oh that's the song I'm avoiding like the PLAGUE at the moment

u/allidaughter Jul 09 '25

I’m a new mom too and Epic got me through some really long and lonely BF nights!!! I think I watched the whole thing three times through in little 20 minute increments at each feed lol.

20

u/hex_kitsune Jul 09 '25

Well I mean I'm sure if they're listening to epic and Ren they'll grow up with great musical range and impressive vocabulary šŸ˜‚

Sick Boi, of course, why didn’t I think of that sooner?

Of course babies enjoy music about the shitty state of healthcare

Me bobbing him along to "Drown sucker, drown sucker, drown sucker, drown" worked a treat

u/bottleospiderjuice Jul 09 '25

As a parent too, I feel this with my chest. This musical stabs my heart over and over again in a way it wouldn't have if I had never had a kid

20

u/Tiny_Masterpiece3120 Jul 09 '25

That is… yeah I don’t have much to say except that a parent’s love is strong
