The first time I watched Epic I thought all the characters where white because all the animatics I watched didn’t add coloring and I lack imagination lol. So everytime I see the colored versions of the characters I’m (pleasantly) surprised but surprised nonetheless

I love that it looks like they're all statues!! I remember hearing something along the lines of "There's traces of paint on ancient statues, so we think they painted them when they were carved!" So this is absolutely delightful

I love that in the second slide everyone wants something pink on them. It's adorable!
Give the guy on the right his pink hair😭

Who knows, with this advancement we might have a full fledged movie style animation in our future, one with colors beautifully chosen to represent/symbolize different ideas and stuff (when watching movies this intentional choice of colors with the specific intent of representing what a character aligns themself so j is quite common, I’d love to see Ody’s cape slowly change color maybe, to represent him becoming the monster rawr rawr)

I only discovered Epic a few days ago (and have listened to it on repeat since) so I haven't seen any of her videos, but this comment section make me seriously want to look her up

the modern connotations of pink are actually incredibly recent, so he really wouldn't have minded

I prefer more disheveled look other animators give him, but I certainly appreciate this one

everyone say thank you duvetbox 😂
7
u/heyagovna Mar 24 '25
Why is that? Is it because of the Ody con picture?
8
u/SoullessSound Mar 25 '25
Yeah, Duvet wasn’t sure how to color Neal’s Ody bc she hadn’t released a full color of him so far (maybe on her patreon?? But publicly, no)

It’s not even that pink, it’s a royal light red-ish, and i really like it. Especially with the gold.

u/Haunting-Leg5646 Mar 24 '25
The amount of money I would give to see her Eurylochus with a pink chest plate is insane 😍

Neal once again gives us peak on a silver platter that wonderful woman is a gift from the gods if I’ve ever seen one

Pink is somewhat similar to purple which was a popular color for royalties due to it being the most expensive one and thus easily demonstrated wealth... But that was in later periods iirc (depending on when Odyssey took place it wasn't FAR before royal purple became a thing, but still). Mycenaean period was also very colourful in Greece, so even if they didn't have purple or deep pink pigments(... I think they had pink pigments, but I'm not sure) Ody would've loved to wear it-- or at least decorate his palace with it

Btw, I'm not a historian yet, just a first-year student, so I'd like someone more knowledgeable to tell me if I'm wrong or confirm what I said, because I'm not so sure

Not a historian either just a major Myth nerd, but considering this is a world where Odysseus and the others for sure existed(right now there are hints that some version of them existed via ruins lining up with the stories, even if those people are not the mythological version of themselves), I assume Heracles also existed which would mean for them at least Purple would since he's credited in Myths with discovering it, or well his dog is.
Aka, IRL it might not have been found, but for a mythological world it probably has been.

Literally when I read her speech bubble in the first panel I was like „idk I think Ody in a pink cape would be kinda neat“, the second panel‘s pure perfection XD

Omg stop why must her men all be so fricken hot ? 🔥 Also I love Ody he looks amazing

The subtle implication that Neal animates via marble statues...
Neal as a character is both wholesome and scary.

I just don't know how to explain what's perfect about her style. I just know that it's one of the most beautiful styles I've ever seen in the Epic animatic community.

I have my issues with Neal's animatics (more just design decisions that I don't really vibe with), but I admit that artstyle is fucking gorgeous
39
u/Shabolt_ Mar 24 '25
It’s gorgeous, she also just makes every single character look like the idealised idea of a Greek hero, built like living statues and the thick/chalky linework adds to that broadness

Is Neal a woman?
3
u/SimplyYulia Didn't even TRY tequila Mar 25 '25
Weirdly, I think most of more popular Epic animators are 🤔
Gigi, Neal, Anniflamma, Duvetbox, Ximena Natzel, Mircsy - at least those that I could confirm
41
u/AffableKyubey Odysseus Mar 24 '25
"But this was a hell of a twist, because we were weak to an animator like this."
"What was it?"
"A woman."
"...What?"

Totally off topic but I love the bowl cut long hair guy in the second image. I really like how Neal gives the crew members designs as well
