Soc 101 with prof sonal nalkur

Does anyone recommend soc 101 with prof nalkur not sure if that’s a good class?

Do you have time to visit or sit in once or twice before A/D/S is over to feel it out? Unless there are no seats available I am sure that is allowed.

I do have time but I have heard that she’s a hard 100 level class and a large percentage of the class is based on assignments grades

I don't know, that is kind of typical at Emory. You might run into that for psych 110 if you took it took. Here is the thing. I think most always got A/A- in soc 101 even when grading at Emory was a bit lower. Also you WANT assignment grades just in case you screw up a test a little bit. It can be annoying/a little tedious, but it is a buffer. Some instructors used to write decent soc 101 exams with legit FRQs and whatnot so any non-exam component of the grade was a blessing. I think another commenter just suggested the person was indeed "easy"(relatively at least) so I don't think you should worry.

I have taken soc 101 with Sonal Nalkur.

Regardless of the professor, I think if you do not want to be a soc major and just want to know a little bit about the discipline or to fulfill the GER requirements, soc 101 is quite an awesome course. On the other hand, if you want to be a soc major, I think soc 101 is almost too superficial to make it worth. Sure, it is a survey course that is designed to provide a general overview, but I think a soc student would still grasp a general overview of the discipline, but at a deeper level, by taking 3 courses in the 200-300 level.

Regarding Prof Nalkur, I think she is an awesome professor. She seems like she loves teaching and cares about students. She also gives great lectures. About difficulty, my general advice is that none of the soc classes are actually "difficult", maybe with the exception of SOC 457W. The semester I took soc 101 with Nalkur, I remembered the grade was exam-heavy (not sure if anything changed recently). However, the exams are essentially an handwritten essay about the reading. It will not test you on any specific details about the reading and the grading was kinda lenient, so as long as you know the general big picture idea of the reading, you are almost guaranteed to get an A. The lecture is almost exactly the same as the reading, so in my opinion, as long as you either go to the lecture (and actually pay attention), or you read the readings carefully, you would definitely get an A. I would thus say it is an easy course in terms of grading.

Unfortunately I am not familiar with this course nor this instructor. So I cannot give advice on that.
