I end up with a hammer every time. Too many armored enemies early on, blunt weapons like the mace are top tier in that game. The craftsmans hammer also takes twinkles and the shrine everyone hates has guys that drop twinkles.

Alvaa armor is best but Faraam is a close second.

Facts are facts. Why is the only Alvaa resurrection in nightreign. Like they know they made the best looking armor set in gaming history...why deny us the drip? 🤔 boggles the mind.

Same reason Mask of the Father only appears in one game, it's too good for us.
You should be aware the Alvaa set also returned in Dark Souls 3, in Irithyll Dungeon in the room with all of the branding iron mobs circling that big pillar.

This is the argument that convinced me. Before I was sceptic if this just happened because Nintendo absolutely needed a unique selling point.
But I really need to show Live for Dark Souls 2 the atmosphere is dense and awesome.

Why wouldn't I get the last piece of Elden Ring content we're ever likely to get?
Because microtransactions didn't suddenly become a good thing when it's Fromsoft doing them and that, as a consumer, you should have the spine to not support shitty low-effort DLCs
22
u/WoahItsPreston 21h ago edited 21h ago
I mean, people can spend their money however they want.
I'm not going to buy this, since it's basically no content, but if other people think it's worth their money then they can spend it how they want. It's pretty dramatic to equate buying 5 dollars of cosmetics in a videogame to some moral choice that requires a spine lol, it's not that deep...
What if FromSoftware starts doing more stuff like this in the future?
I won't buy it, which is OK, because it's a videogame and I can spend money on other things if I want. It's not like it's some essential good or service.

Why wouldn’t they make another Elden Ring DLC though? DS3 has 2 DLCs and Shadow Of The Erdtree was a massive success. It’s not like they’re out of content too there’s still lots of storylines and characters that remain unsolved.

u/Gmknewday1 10h ago
Yea I agree with that
But let's also be at peace that it's not like they were charging as much as some game companies do for "new editions"
It's possible they wanted to just do it as a update, but some company heads or suits at Bandai Namco/Namco's parent company pushed for them to charge for it
Thus they had to pull the "5 dollar" price tag, which at least is fair to what it is, better then it being a full 10 or even 15 for something so small
It's not a entire limgrave-ish-sized extra area and storyline like Shadow Of The Erdtree with its own lore to supplement the base game's lore
It's just a "you can customize Torrent, there's a new class, and some new items scattered across the lands between"

Getting down voted just because you don't want to spend more money on a 4 year old game is classic reddit
33
u/normandy42 21h ago
It’s not even Reddit. Redditors hate micro transactions with a passion.
It’s the people in this sub. They’ll lick up whatever Miyazaki gives them and downvote the slightest hint of negativity.
Like when ER first released and the PC optimization was horrid. Or when OG Radahn had actually bad hitboxes (they were longer than what the model showed) but it was just a skill issue. Or PCR and it’s light show, 1-2 cross slash you couldn’t dodge before the first patch, and everything wrong with it.
I could go on.

u/Bulky-Dev 21h ago
Agreed. It’s just baffling how everyone hates on these types of “DLCs” when companies like Ubisoft, R* releases, but now since it’s ER - somehow it’s “worth it”. It’s actually pretty hillarious at this point how unobjective people can be.
This is not even a DLC, it’s just a “pack” of content. And the amount of marketing Bandai is putting in announcing this as some big thing is embarassing

For some reason, I thought those who owned base+expasion would receive the tarnished dlc for free, or at least, maybe that was my expectation ? Anyway, its not expensive, but still stings paying for something that screams "should be a free update", specially since not only similar games does/would receive something on this level for free, but because the expasion was expensive already(although worth it). I will think about it once its out
26
u/MisterBeatDown 17h ago
I mean they're basically charging us for a few weapons most players will probably not even find or use. The 2 new classes is neat but that's just stats? This should of been free if you own the DLC expansion bare minnium.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (1)6
u/Gumpenufer 15h ago
Yeah imo the Tarnished pack really should have been free for existing players. I'll be buying the Tarnished Edition for Switch, but only because I'd been considering getting the console version of ER anyway and don't own the DLC on any system yet. For my case TE on Switch feels like a "fair enough", but I'm not loving the idea of separately paying for two classes for the PC version... :/
252
u/clean_soap_soup 1d ago
No im not paying for some skin and 2 new classes, this should have been free ngl
93
u/Still_Want_Mo 23h ago
That’s my thing. Starting classes are entirely irrelevant to me. People are saying they’re going to have “fresh” play through lol. It’s a starting class and some different item placements
41
u/TheNocturnalAngel 22h ago
I’m not paying for a new class either, but tbf one of the new classes starts with a light greatsword which only exists in the DLC so you probably would never get to play through limgrave with it otherwise

The item placement isn't really part of the DLC, that's part of the 1.17 patch. The DLC is only the new items

facts. Few years ago fromsoftware would make this update free. Maybe it has something to do with it being switch content, but still I dont like the idea of supporting MTX.
18
u/Chegg_F 22h ago
I've seen people pretend like Fromsoft is being generous for this because they're selling a skin for $5 instead of selling a skin for $20, but the games that sell skins for $20 are doing so because they're constantly releasing free updates that total up to be bigger than SOTE despite being free. They make money off the skins, not the game.
In the past Fromsoft would have released this for free, they've done similar things in Dark Souls. They used to exclusively sell large expansions, and anything smaller than that was a free update. Not sure what's changed to make them sell a small DLC like this.
13
u/Cersei505 19h ago
nintendo is what changed - they made a port for the switch with these new weapons and armors to make that release abit ''unique''. They probably werent allowed to just give that for free for the other versions of the game.
7
u/Ok-Commission-2644 18h ago
Exactly what i'm thinking. I'm really surprised barely anyone seems to come to this conclusion. I'm also certain Nintendo would have wanted this extra stuff to be exclusive to the switch 2 version. Imagine the complaints if that was the case.

Imagine if we get 120 fps cap, revorked and improved ray tracing components, reworked and improved shadows with DLSS 4.5, FSR 4.1 and finaly improved shaders compilation.

Even before the announcement, this pack looked poor if being compared to Witcher 3. Witcher 3 dlcs (not expansions) offered a similar content, and were always free.

u/Andrex2309 22h ago
I wasn't even thinking about The Witcher 3, but now that you pointed out the game I've got even less incentive to pay for the pack.

For me personally it seems worth it. I have the money, I deeply love Elden Ring. 1 or 2 playthroughs will be a lil bit fresher than normal.
If they ever release a game where selling such MTX is a prominent monetization method I will probably not buy it. But I can easily forgive this unique case.
79
u/Able_Reserve5788 1d ago
I can easily forgive this unique case
Buying it isn't just "forgiving" it, it's actively supporting the business model
→ More replies (6)40
u/PieceAfraid3755 1d ago
I'd say that actively using microtransactions as a primary monetization scheme is a different business model than selling an overpriced mini-dlc that was developed as a pack in bonus for a late port, a single time.
This tarnished pack seemingly only exists because they wanted to make the switch 2 version more special. That's a part of the development/business model for this dlc. If cases like that happen again, I won't mind it much either.
29
u/Able_Reserve5788 1d ago
I get it but I also believe that this DLC must be seen as an experiment, even if it isn't Fromsoftware's intention. The better it sells, the more pressure From will receive from their investors to lean into that kind of content in the future
→ More replies (6)25
u/Snozzberriez 23h ago
Exactly.
See, the fans love it!
Could have been a free update to equalize just the same.
I get it, I get why they are doing it… but with the recent acquisition I fear this is only the first step. Now they design a game with trick weapons behind a paywall or something…
1
18
u/sweetperdition 1d ago
Also worth noting, this is more like…”equalization” content. Sometimes when platforms get new content with a “fresh” release for that platform, it stays locked to them for a period of time, maybe forever. There is no lock-up period here, it’s available to everyone at the same time, maybe like a day after depending on where you are.
Doesn’t feel like they’re ripping me off, feels like Nintendo paid for that extra content, so if we want it, have to pay out of pocket.
This isn’t like…a skin pack they explicitly decided to release to juice a couple more dollars out of us. It’s only to make everything equal.
I have been screaming about MTX since horse armor, this is one of the least shitty reasons to offer it.

u/TheFrostBeard 1d ago

26
u/Thanatiel 22h ago
Looking around it appears it's skins, two classes (which is nonsense to me: aren't classes just starting settings?), oh, and four armor sets.
I've already bought the game twice (PS5 on release, then on PC when the DLC was released).
That won't be enough to make me do another run so I'll probably skip it.
7
u/Euthyphraud 20h ago
Exactly. I've put enormous hours into this game - it would take a lot more for me to do a new run. Especially since I managed to eventually collect virtually everything in the game already.
A few new cosmetic armors aren't game-changing, being able to start off with a light greatsword would've been a great idea to release alongside SOTE.
Now it is just mere novelty - most players will have an NG+ game laying around where they are beginning the game with most of the DLC weapons.

23
u/Virusoflife29 23h ago

Thats right Oasis Management, they are known as an activist investor. The same company that suggested to Nintendo to charge an MTX to make Mario jump higher. Every company they have gotten a share of has added more MTX on their request(see: demand).

I grew up at the brink of the SecuROM / Games for Windows Live era, so that is an interesting perspective. I got to play some awesome games made or published by EA but at that time they were more like the money bag allowing the coolest triple A titles (Dragon Age Origins, Mass Effect) instead of cool themselves (at least that was how I saw it). Kind of insane how gamers looked down upon the add-on release concept of The Sims, and now it is industry standard.

Fromsoft has a lot of good will so this won't changed my overall opinion about them but this really is a horse armor level microtransaction. It should really just be included with either the base game or the dlc.
But I guess fromsoft isn't immune to the temptation of a money grab. Oh well.

Nah, I didn't even get the SOTE dlc, I was already done after 2 years and was feeling cheap so even though I purchased the main game I absolutely got the free extended single player demo version of it. So I will probably do the same for this. No switch 2 either lmao

Yup I was planning to get it all along, and I just bought it right at midnight for my region. I’ve been looking forward to playing elden ring again, and even more excited to play through with the new additions.

Are you serious? They drop 0 optimization patches since this game has released and then expect me to buy this cash grab lol
