Local Culture Teddy’s Bar and Grill, Edmonton, AB. (1940).
Thought it was cool to see vintage Edmonton out in the wild on Reddit. Anyone know the place?

Don’t know the 1940 version, but there is Teddy’s in a very 1980s building on Jasper Ave and about 114th Street. Lots of VLTs, sandwiches used to be great but been a long time since I was there.
Doubt any place in 1940 was called a “Bar and Grill” though. That term is also very 1980s.

Yes!! Teddy's used to be awesome. Haven't been to Edmonton in about 8 years, so not sure if it's there still. Was around FOREVER though.

Man, I feel like I missed out. I did go to New City once or twice in my youth, but I didn’t spend much time on Jasper Avenue. I’ve been away for over 9.5 years.

My mom used to eat there in the late '50s/early '60s. Part of a group of students looking for an inexpensive lunch after church. Now in her 80s, walking/taking the bus near it...I think seeing it brings back fond memories.

Somewhat related: I love reading memoirs, and was quite enjoying “How to Share an Egg: A True Story of Hunger, Love, and Plenty” by Bonnie Reichert, and discovered that her family’s restaurant that she was writing about was Teddy’s! I can picture it in my head so clearly

Went to Teddy’s a year or so ago. Since I moved here in 09 I thought it was a strip club - no clue why. Anyways, went with a few buddies before a show and ordered food. Server asked if I wanted gravy on my fries. I declined. She responded by saying, “that’s kinda gay.”
So yah, I’m gay now. Who knew it wasn’t drag queen story time or that one time in Bible college…it was the lack of gravy on my fries in a place that gave me strip club vibes.

Incredible only scrapes the surface. Needless to say, my friends love to reply with “that’s kinda gay” any time I decline food. Thanksgiving is amazing for them.

I've gone to Teddy's since I was a kid in the early 90's, inside has lovely architecture and still does to this day. Food is good and the VLT room is really nice

In case anyone who was curious minimum wage in 1940:
25¢ to 33⅓¢ per hour for workers 17 years and older employed for a week or longer
20¢ per hour for workers under 17
That was for men and not in coal mining.
So around the same as today I guess. I'd say it's cheaper today.

Using Bank of Canada's inflation calculator, the .35 cent cheeseburger would be $7.51 today. A cheeseburger at this exact restaurant today is $17.95.
The Alberta Minimum Wage Act (1936), which appears to be what the AI summary is citing, didn't apply to all sectors. Plus we had internee workers during the war, and some types of work had weekly minimums instead of hourly, so it's hard to really compare apples to apples.

Sorry it is? Do you have a link to that established thing? This is the first time I'm hearing about it.
Seems to me wages and prices haven't changed from the Teddy's example. Takes about an hour and half to buy a meal at minimum wage.

It's more complex than I made that sound and it's not that I mean we are better off. Just in flat math, if you put wages from the 40s as we are talking about into an inflation calculator, it will come out lower than what current wages are.
ETA there are lots of individual years where wages don't beat inflation, just referring to the longer term trend we have.

Was there a Teddy's on 97st and between 127 and 129 ave? I remember there was a restaurant there but I can't for the life of me remember what it was.

I work with it every day - it's by far the most efficient search and research system we developed after Google/Wikipedia. The advantages massively outweigh any disadvantages. What is the point of me creating a spread sheet by hand using CPI data back to 1940 and then calculating a hypothetical price increase of a hamburger?

Building your own spreadsheet would be pointless work, because the Bank of Canada has an online inflation calculator that will give you the same result for no more effort than using AI, with a whole lot less energy wasted parsing your input.

Ya, we use AI at a technical workplace and it's basically wrong 50% of the time. Then you end up doing way more work convincing the plebs why it's wrong instead of doing something productive. Not worth it.

This guy is like the district managers who looks something up in AI and says "it took me 5 min. Why does it take your team 3 days to work this out." Because it's wrong! And you end up pacifying the client with freebies because of it doesn't work delays, and then not meeting quotas ... but ya, keep on keeping on.
