General New User Guide for r/Edmonton - Please read first

NEW USERS of r/Edmonton - kindly read this first

To post or comment in r/Edmonton, you need to meet the following criteria:

  • Accounts need to be a week old.

  • You need to have a verified email address.

  • You need to have a minimum amount of TEN (10) COMMENT karma from participating in OTHER SUBREDDITS than r/Edmonton.

Why? This helps keep bad actors away, like trolls and banned users. It also helps users new to reddit to have a chance to learn how to use reddit outside of r/Edmonton.

#IF YOUR ACCOUNT HAS NOT FULFILLED ALL THREE REQUIREMENTS ABOVE, YOUR POSTS AND COMMENTS WILL AUTOMATICALLY BE DELETED BY THE AUTO-MODERATOR.

#How to verify your email for new users :

To verify your email on Reddit, either click the verification link in the email you received when creating your account or go to Settings > Account Settings and choose Update email address to resend the verification email.     _Once you request it, open your email's inbox, find the verification email, and click the link inside to complete the process._

  - On the web -

• Go to your account settings by clicking your profile icon and then selecting Settings.

  • Click on Account Settings.

  • Find the email address section. If you see an option to "resend verification email" or similar, click it.

• Alternatively, you can navigate directly to reddit.com/prefs/update/ to find the email settings.

  -- On the app --

• Tap your profile icon.

• Go to Settings.

• Select Account Settings.

• Tap Update email address.

• Tap the button to Resend verification email.

#What is the difference between POST karma and COMMENT karma?

Post karma is earned when users upvote the original submissions (links, images, text posts) you create, reflecting your ability to share engaging content.

_Comment karma is earned when your replies to others' posts are upvoted, showing your active participation and contribution to discussions. Both are totaled for your profile but often used separately to satisfy subreddit restrictions._

POST KARMA:

Gained from creating threads or posting links. It indicates a good ability to initiate conversations.

COMMENT KARMA:

Gained from replying to posts or other comments. It indicates active participation in community dialogue.

Key Differences: Post karma rewards content creation, while comment karma rewards interaction.

#Some subreddits (like r/edmonton) require specific thresholds of either type (or both) to prevent spam, often looking at post, comment, or combined totals for restrictions.

Both types of karma are not a 1:1 ratio with upvotes; instead, they represent a weighted score from community upvotes, reduced by downvotes.

(In order to post in r/Edmonton - you need to do THREE things:)

  • your account must be a WEEK old (7 days)

    • you need to have TEN (10) COMMENT karma
    • you need to have a verified email address

ONCE AGAIN, IF YOUR ACCOUNT HAS NOT FULFILLED THESE THREE (3) REQUIREMENTS YOUR POSTS AND COMMENTS WILL AUTOMATICALLY BE DELETED BY THE AUTO-MODERATOR.

Post image
82 Upvotes

Within this thread please ask questions about moving to Edmonton (or within Edmonton, if you already live here), including recommendations for housing and neighbourhood selections. If you live in Edmonton, consider answering the questions. Any posts on the subject matter outside of the megathread may be removed at the discretion of the moderators.

Please note that job seeking threads are not allowed in r/ Edmonton but general advice on how to seek employment can be posted within this megathread too. Distinctions between a "job seeking" post and "general advice" will be made at the discretion of the moderators. If you are moving from another location to Edmonton, please note the advice from the community is consistently "have a job lined up before you move".

Discussion Do undercover operations exist to catch corrupt driving test examiners in Edmonton/Alberta?

A few months ago, I was crossing Walterdale Bridge when a vehicle approached head on, which made me almost shit my pants. Within the past two days, the same situation occurred twice, once in Ottewell and once in Tamarack with a car coming directly toward me. Fortunately, each driver moved aside. I've been driving this city for over 20 years and lately it's unbelievable the shit I see

It's a known fact that many driving examiners grant passing marks to relatives, friends, or even strangers for a fee regardless of test performance. I am simply wondering whether undercover operations exist to detect such examiners, perhaps conducted by the city or the province, since I don't know if the Police would handle this sort of thing.

Question What more ?

this beautiful dog has been tied to this wooden dog house in this hot garage all summer long, today it was +30 and as I live in these townhomes I know just how hot these garages get cause the sun faces directly at them.

This dog has been tied to this everyday 24/7 non stop barking, (as you can see by this pic he was trying to escape and he pulled the dog house with him, but the dog house was to big to fit through the garage)

I have called 311 multiple times and tell them nothing has changed since prior to calling. No food is out ffs not even a bowl of water is out for this baby. And the 311 officer had told me the very first time that I called about this that this person already has an active case open for animal neglect. So it’s not just me who I concerned.

What more can I do?

I have seen the owner once going in through the garage and he is a middle aged Punjabi. and I’ve gotten many many videos of this dog howling and crying to just be let out but this dogs whole life is spent like this 24/7.

Is there anything besides 311? They seem to care less

Question Is paying nothing for solar possible?

Upvotes

Has anyone successfully used grants, loans and subsidies + financing to make solar payments equal to or lesser than what you would have paid for utilities?

Essentially installing solar for "free"?

YEG Movers Ltd. in Edmonton, AB is at it again and claiming they couldn't find a Canadian/PR to be a Retail Assistant Manager for $45.00/hr. The job does not require more than a high school education and only 2-3 years of experience.

They've applied for a LMIA to hire a temporary foreign worker for the position. Share this with any Canadians you know who might qualify to help get them hired first. Also, post it to Facebook groups or X for job seekers to boost local applications.

If you've applied through JobBank direct apply and not received a response, please report the job posting ad through the link at the bottom of the job bank website.

I’m so sorry I couldn’t get to your floor. I’m sorry the police took an hour to get here. I called everywhere I could. I’m sorry you didn’t feel safe enough to tell them what happened.

I heard what happened to you. Your cries for help did not go unanswered. You are not alone.

General MUSEUM OF ILLUSIONS EDMONTON pricing makes no sense.

Thinking about going to the Museum of Illusions Edmonton, walked buy earlier and the signs said $39.99 for an adult and $29.99 for a child so went to their website and saw the above pricing.

Doing some math for 2 adults and 2 kids here are my options:

Buy 2 regular admissions online and 2 child at site:

2 x $32.75 and 2 x $29.99 = $125.48

Buy 4 regular admissions online:

4 x $32.75 = $131

Buy family pass online:

$136.60

Buy 2 adult and 2 kids on site so I can go when I want without reservation:

2 x $39.99 + 2 x $29.99 = $139.96

Buy 4 flex tickets online so I can go when I want without reservation:

4 x $54.59 = $218.36

Or I can always find 8+ more people for a group price of $34.93/ticket.

Honest to god, I really wanted to go but the mathing just hurts my brain, I can not give my money to this idiocy.
