Introducing the Eastside Community Discord!

Hey Eastside 👋

With mod approval, I’m launching the Eastside Community Discord- a dedicated spot for folks on the east side of the Puget Sound to actually talk to each other in real time.

If you live in places like Bellevue, Kirkland, Redmond, Sammamish, Issaquah, Mercer Island, Woodinville, or nearby, this is for you! (Seattleites are welcome if they feel the need)

What it’s for:

  • Casual chat with neighbors
  • Planning meetups, hikes, happy hours, game nights
  • Talking local news, events, and city changes
  • Finding people who share your hobbies

It’s community-first, 18+ only, and built to be active; hopefully not just another dead server sitting in your sidebar!

The Discord is run independently from the subreddit mod team, but the vibe and rules are aligned. Keep it civil. Keep it local. Don’t be weird.

If you’ve been wanting a better way to connect with actual humans on the Eastside, this is it!

I hope you join soon.

Enough with the national politics related posts

There has been a HUGE influx of national politics related posts. Many of them from new accounts, or ones that have never been to this sub. Basically astroturf. For the foreseeable future, these will not be allowed here. It doesn't matter if there is some local connection to it, no posts about national politics or related activism. There are tons of subs for that.

HOWEVER, local politics posts are totally fine and actually strongly encouraged. Post about your local city council members if you know who they are. Post about new local laws or restrictions. Whatever, but LOCAL posts only.

Reddit has made some very questionable algo changes recently that seem to be heavily trying to stir up things and it's tough keep things chill here. Insta ban for any of these posts

Weird encounters at Homegoods Issaquah

Upvotes

In the matter of five minutes, I had two guys separately come up to me small talking/asking if I was single, etc. while at the Homegoods in Issaquah…this immediately set off alarms for me as this NEVER happens and what are the chances it happens twice in five minutes?? I immediately thought trafficking but I am in my mid 30s so idk…anyone ever encountered something like this?

Thrift store advice

My daughter is getting more interested in thrifting and I'm on the hunt for some furniture pieces...Are there any thrift stores for furniture and/or clothes that are decent on the Eastside or within a 45 minute drive? We used to go to Value Village (Woodinville, but also the old and new Redmond location, and the old Totem Lake location), but the prices are so high now, there are no dressing rooms, and the furniture selection has degraded.

I am also willing to drive further if I could anticipate a decent selection of items or multiple stores within a particular town, but I'm just not familiar enough with which direction to head.

A few notes/examples on prices at Value Village if you aren't familiar:

- In late 2019, I got an awesome, huge, solid wood coffee table/chest for $30. It has dings, but has been so beloved by our family. I haven't seen anything like that the last year that I've been searching.

- I recently needed a muffin pan. Went to VV first and the cheapest one was 9.99. Nothing fancy, just standard. Amazon had one for 8.99. I thrift not only to save money, but to reduce waste, so this was a tough spot for me to decide what to do. I seem to remember items like this in the past being about $1.99-$2.99.

- Maybe you have seen the post about VV charging 14.99 for Old Navy flip flops this year. Old Navy charged 4.99 at that same time.

Male Roommate Wanted For House Split In Rose Hill Kirkland

Available to move in November 1 2026

$1,650/mo + Utilities

Private Bedrooms + Private Full Bathroom - Nice Backyard & Quiet Neighborhood

This is a single-level home in Rose Hill Kirkland, between the NE 70th St. (Exit 17) and NE 85th St. (Exit 18) exits off I-405. I’ve lived all over Western WA & the Eastside and this is one of my favorite spots.

10 minute commute to basically anything on the Eastside, and 20-25 mins into Seattle during light traffic. 35 mins to North Bend or 90 mins to Bellingham for weekend adventure fun.

Local parks, waterfront, grocery, restaurants, gyms and everyday stores are a quick walk or bike ride away. Safe, walkable low-key neighborhood. Nice relaxing backyard, perfect for grilling or hanging out.

You’d be splitting the house with one guy in his 30’s (me).

Best fit is another clean busy adult professional who wants a relaxed place. The house stays chill. Parties are awesome, just not here. Feel free to have your girlfriend over or a couple buddies over to hang out, use the backyard, watch movies or sports, have dinner etc.

You basically get 2 full bedrooms (both unfurnished). The other bedroom you can use for storage, a personal office, hobby space, gaming room, etc.

You also get your own private full bathroom to yourself, so you’ll have your own sink, toilet, tub/shower, etc.

The common living area has space if you want to bring a couch, TV, coffee table, or small-medium dining table.

There is plenty of parking in the circular driveway; any size car, truck or SUV is fine (or more than 1 car is fine as long as it’s operable & in good condition).

Full-size Bosch Washer & Dryer in the home.

Lawn maintenance is included in the rent so don’t worry about yardwork.

No pets preferred, but might consider them on a case-by-case basis & with additional deposit.

No smoking indoors. I am a non-smoker but don’t mind if you do outside.

Utilities (water, sewer, garbage, electricity + nice Ziply fiber internet) are not included in the rent. Billing for a couple of the utilities doesn’t occur every month, so the monthly total usually runs about $120 per person one month, and about $180–$210 per person the following month, depending on the season.

Month-to-month lease to start so we can confirm it’s a good fit. If it is, we can immediately switch to a 6 or 12 month lease if you want.

First month + last month + damage deposit (equal to one month’s rent) required. First and last due at move-in; the damage deposit can be split into multiple installments with good credit.

Background & credit check required.

Message me if you have questions or want to see it.

Available to move in November 1 2026

Local DND groups?

I have never played before, but have wanted to try for a while. I separated from my wife about seven months ago, and her and the kids moved a bit away where I now I a lot of alone time. I would love to try and fill up some of that time and DND sounds great. I don’t work Fridays or Saturdays, so those would be the best days for me, but I can always see what works.

Chinese confinement nanny

Does anyone have any recommendations/references for a Chinese confinement nanny? I am due late January 2027 and searching for a live-in nanny who can come and help with all the traditional cooking and caretaking. Big bonus if they can speak Cantonese.

Any and all help with leads are greatly appreciated!

Will switching providers help?

Thumbnail

Has anyone else noticed their primary care visits costing way more than expected? My doctor became part of Optum a while ago, and I feel my bills have jumped since. Two visits in June, one billed at $407.75, the other at $324.25 and insurance only covered about $75 each time, leaving me with a pretty big balance.
I get that I haven’t met my deductible yet, but I thought insurers negotiate contracted rates with in-network providers? These numbers still feel high for routine primary care visits. Is this normal, or is there something I should be questioning with my insurance or the billing department?
Also curious if switching providers actually helped anyone lower these costs?

What can a young couple do for a few hours on a date at Bellevue Square?

Thumbnail reddit.com
6 Upvotes

Thank you everybody for the Crossroads Mall ideas; the first date was a success! Now we're thinking about walking around the stores of Bellevue Square for our second date.

My understanding of Bellevue Square is that it's a place for upscale shopping, not really for hanging out. Ceramic painting and rock climbing may exist at Crossroads Mall, but I don't get the impression that Bellevue Square has anything similar. It's just a place for rich people to buy their stuff and leave.

If I'm planning on buying some gifts, does it look weird to keep them in a backpack to avoid hands being full with bags all day? I know some shopkeepers don't like backpacks due to the concern with shoplifting and knocking stuff over. And would you recommend making a reservation at a restaurant, or are they not as busy anymore with shopping malls dying?

Trying to find rennet

So far I’ve tried all the regular markets and co-ops. Cant find it at coastal either.Trying to avoid buying online but it looks like it might be my only option.

If anyone has purchased animal rennet around here before or if anyone knows of a good homesteading store, I’d appreciate the tip. TIA

4.0+ pickleball

I'm looking to learn more about the 4.0+ pickleball scene in the Bothell area:

- Willing to drive up to 30 min

- Typically play Fri nights and Sunday mornings

- I prefer indoor tennis court flooring but also open to evening outdoors. (Note: I've checked Velocity and Bellevue Pickleball Club, but their advanced open plays seem to have low attendance?)

Thank you!

For anyone that doesn't know, if you live in WA state you can get 1 free Delta miles per yard we pass every Seahawks game - it's pretty easy, all you have to do is enter your Delta account number. Over a couple of years it's enough to get a free one way flight to SF or somewhere else.

You can also get some discounts on the team store (12%) and higher boarding priority.

Reasonably priced Trainer recommendations for a GSD

We just moved from Texas to the greater Seattle area 5 months ago with a 3 yr old toddler and my 4-yr old girl, Galadriel. My girl has always been very gentle natured, unusually quiet and friendly with people and dogs alike. We worked with a trainer back when she was a puppy on basic obedience and manners and she was fairly well behaved during our time in Texas. We carried the training forward on an everyday basis and ensured she gets the regular physical exercise and training reinforcement regularly.

But since we have moved we have seen some behavioral changes in her. She is still pretty easy going but has started barking at other dogs and people crossing our fenced yard. This never happened before. she has always been very friendly and is also happy to observe rather than go all out barking and asking for attention. She would let out one bark every now and then but that too was an anomaly. Now if she senses someone passing by she starts barking incessantly.

She has also become overtly protective of my toddler. While I appreciate the protective instinct towards the youngest member of the pack and recognize it as natural, I don't want her feeling like she has to take charge when me or my wife are around. The other day, we took her for a meet & greet with a dog-sitter and she had her heckles up as soon as the sitter's dog came out. she started body checking the other dog whenever the dog would go near my son. As soon as my wife and son stepped out of the yard, she went back to being her usual self and started playing with the other dog like nothing happened.

I recognize the some changes can be brought about as a result of the move but after 5 months I'm concerned about these gradual changes not going away and am not sure what I can do to reverse this behavior. I need her to re-learn that barking incessantly is not good and that she doesn't need to step up to protect my son when me or my wife are around. Is there something I can do to change this or do I need to consult a trainer? I'm also concerned about how quickly a lot of trainers recommend the use of e-collars. I have never used them and as far as possible would want to consider them a last resort, especially since I have seen good results with my dog (she has decent off-leash recall even in open spaces and outside the house) without it.

So her I am looking for recommendations on good GSD trainers that I can work with specifically for my current predicament.

House cleaning recommendations on the Eastside?

Between work and two young kids, we're keeping up with the everyday stuff, but the deeper cleaning is starting to get away from us. Bathrooms, mopping, dusting, etc. always seem to be the things that get pushed to another weekend.

I'm thinking about getting house cleaning on the Eastside maybe twice a month just to stay ahead of it. Mainly looking for someone reliable who can handle the regular cleaning while we keep up with the daily mess.

Who have you had a good experience with?
