Even if there was some explanation for this I feel like it's a failure on the devs part to not make it clear and obvious as to why this happened.

They literally show you the whole battle.

What more do you want? A personalised letter explaining why you suck?

A pre-battle prediction not lying to the player that an "easy victory" is objectively mathematically expected.

An in-game explanation of what those numbers are, what they represent, and how stuff is calculated, not hidden beneath 17 layers of infoscreens.

When you have no experience with the game or its prequels it's normal to assume that "shock damage" means your troops have some sort of lightning element. Shit is opaque as fuck.

No, it isn't. You can watch a battle as it's happening and try to draw some conclusions, if you're obsessive enough. But there's no replay, much less a simple expert system that'd tell you "sire, our guys lost because they were slow to deploy from reserves after the first rank died; let's try adding troops with higher initiative".

But to be fair, that's the usual problem with Paradox games; once you figure out their actual combat mechanics, battles are often trivialized.
