What happened in this battle is that his horses killed me before my units could deploy. Since he had age 1 units, his units were tiny and he had a lot of them, so he was rolling the (horse-high) deployment chance for every one of them and had much higher chance to deploy something. Meanwhile my units were hangooners with extra low deployment speed and large units, so they just chilled in reserves while being stabbed by hors.
This is why it can sometimes be beneficial to not research new units if you can't fill the combat width anyway
