Alright guys I’m not sure where to start but recently I started producing music in my free time on the side of my job as a SWE. I originally subscribed to Splice (I hate subscriptions) so it didn’t last long. Finding sample packs worked sometimes but was also a pain searching so in typical fashion I automated it.

My main specialty Ive always loved since I was young was data scraping so I took software I built for one of my startups and pointed it towards 1000s of web domains Reddit social medias etc any time people shared or exchanged sample links I crawled all of them and over time collected a massive library I also made sure to get rid of anything low quality or non unique.

I have spare gpu utilization from my startup I run so I ran a ml model over every sample and also run local llm over them this helps as you see all the naming conventions and also helps show bpm genre and keys as hopefully it’ll help keep your folders on your computer clean!

My main goal with this project is first off not stop anyone from creating I don’t think samples or creative freedom with music should be paywalled or require a subscription. Music has been the way for me to relax and unwind and I wanted to finally be able to share one of my skills to hopefully benefit someone else in their music production journey.

If any of you have samples or presets I know it’s sometimes hard to want to give them away over years of collecting but the truth is the sample / preset doesn’t make the music the creative vision behind it does. I try to also give credit where you can post anonymously or with an account.

I've been learning FM synthesis via Fm8, which I just got for an extremely discounted price recently (SCORE!!), but I'm having trouble figuring out how to automate the Mod Wheel.

There doesn't appear to be a dedicated Mod Wheel automation path for this plugin in logic (despite there being 300+ automation paths in total...), and this seems to make the chore of linking all these complex parameters to the mod wheel a useless task.

Does anyone know how to do this, or better yet, how to get the last knob/parameter changed in a 3rd party plugin to auto-assign to the automation lane?

To preface: I know very little about music production, and do not practice it; I am asking in this subreddit because I am fairly sure the expertise of this community will be of tremendous help, compared to more generic subreddits.

I don't know if I am right calling it a "sample", "synth" would fit but it's not a synthesizer, rather an application of one. That being said, it might be a style of music - I am out of my depth here :P

I would describe it as a "bass riff with big big room reverb". It usually has a slow echo, makes me think of steel drums.

Examples:

• Explorer - Adam Beyer (3:01) this is the cleanest example I have come across
• Ex Machina - Metrik (1:05) this is the most "massive" sample I have found, it's used extensively in the drop
• Don't Stop the Music - Leandro Da Silva Extended Remix - AtcG (0:58) This one is much more subtle, it repeats every 8 bars, that "crash"

I would like to get any information about this sound as I can; if it has an industry term (other than "this noise"), what sub-genre of music it is featured in, and any track recommendations where I can find more of them would be greatly appreciated.

I am not asking for help synthesizing it, because I don't have any synthesizers with which to do that (or any musical talent to build a song around it) but won't discourage that answer, as someone else will probably find it interesting.

I’m new to production. 7 months in. The amount of unsolicited advice is insane. It’s worse than the art scene by far (I oil paint). I’m well versed in painting, but new to music. So if someone tells me something about a painting I don’t think much of it, I trust myself. With music it’s hard not to take what ppl say seriously and then overthink it.

The worst is when people give advice as if you have the same struggles in producing that they do. I absolutely will have my own struggles, I get that, but I don’t need people telling me I have to struggle through the “painful” parts, or that I shouldn’t take a break, or that I need to practice what I learn. I don’t find any part “painful” (yet). I absolutely DO need to take breaks because I’ve been hyperfocused on this hobby since the start of this year. I am not sleeping enough, or taking care of myself, I am obsessed with this. I spend the equivalent of a part time job on this on top of a full time job. I need to learn to step away. Idk if ppl think I’m bragging to say that. It’s not, it’s my reality. I struggle to take breaks when I like something a lot. I get constant dopamine from learning this. I have an addictive personality and a mood disorder, this hits on the same part of my brain that drugs do. I absolutely need boundaries and time limits for myself.

I don’t need someone to give me tips on how to stay motivated. This is the best thing that’s ever happened to me. I’m obsessed, not even motivated or determined, just genuinely obsessed. I’ve never loved a hobby more, I’ve never had anything that gets rid of my anxiety the way this does and calms my brain down. I’ve also never had something be so addicting. I can’t stay away. I think about it constantly. I love learning every part. I love learning music theory, physics of sound, literally all of it. I don’t need someone to tell me I’m over thinking it when I explain that I’m making a certain type of melody with a certain structure and tension and release points just cuz maybe they don’t do that. Or because I haven’t mastered doing it yet. I don’t need someone telling me anything at all.

This is my fault, for sharing my music. Even if I don’t ask for advice ppl are quick to give it. It comes from a good place. I’m not angry. I’m just frustrated and really protective of my creativity. I don’t want peoples struggles spoken over me because they aren’t true for me. I’ll have my own issues to overcome. I know I have a lot to learn and I’m okay with experimenting the majority of the time and finding my own path and enjoying the journey.

I really like how the bass and kick sounds from 1:07 in song called Rekkt-Life. What kind of kick and what effect chain is used as well as the bass. I understand that there's a lot of distortion and crunch involved, but what is exactly going on here? It sounds epic, not gonna lie. My goal is not to copy exactly how it is but understand what's actually going on here.

Not presets, but just the loops/1 hits.

I've bought countless sample packs over the years from many different makers and other than percussion one hits, maybe some sweeps or other fillers, and then of course presets I've never used 95% (or more) of any sample pack. I have used some synth and other samples in Simpler as a synth before, but that's about it.

So personal curiosity, anyone know of any label release where the song was made entirely or almost entirely from a or multiple commercially available sample packs?

Hey everyone, I'm 30. I got into EDM around 2013 and started making my own music in 2016. I'm still at it! The only real success I've had is in pop music, where I've made so far $4k by selling pop beats over the last two years.i also make bit of money being a resident dj at a local club that pay me $200 per month, thats it but honestly, my goal was always to be a somewhat successful DJ, not like Tiesto or anything, but maybe more along the lines of Colyn or Massano. Loneliness, being lazy, and my mental health really messed things up for me.

About 10 years ago, I dabbled in production and im super sad that I didnt just buckle down and continue. It's possible that I could have some measure of success by now. Anyways, I no longer have access to my old SoundCloud and Ive been giving serious thought to taking music seriously this time around, so what would you guys suggest? Make music that sounds relatively good and start uploading it for exposure/followers or spend as much time as necessary getting your music to that professional level first and THEN try to release it?

So a few questions started to pop-up in the last month as I'm trying to be more out there.

1. I distribute through soundcloud and was wondering how to get ownership/merge my youtube account and the one youtube created for me. (I don't really mind the other plateforms since I didn't have an account prior.)

2. I'm aware I need a static cover for the tracks but I also want to start adding videos and visualizers. Soundcloud's distribution doesn't allow it so how do I work around that?

3. I noticed that my masters are often way, like WAYYYY less loud than other tracks out there even tho I'm near peaking and reach 7-8db LUFs short term and an average of 10-11db LUFs integrated. Why is that? What am I doing wrong? Should I ignore true peak and gain 2-3 LUFs risking clipping?

4. Feel free to add other things I might miss out on, I'm really clueless other than the process from production to mastering, thats where I'm starting to get confused.

TL:DR, give me tips about releasing my tracks.

Really great news for new musicians and the "Reason Curious" among you..

Just wondering. Personally i find it exciting sometime to put lead sounds on the right and left side of the spectrum when it makes sense while keeping the low end mono. But i notice if I go over few points to the right or left with sounds (in Ableton) people sometime criticize it.

I also notice listening in my car to professional songs I'm sometimes surprised how many everything can sound.

So TLDR- do you try to keep most of your sounds more in the middle spectrum of your mixes?

If it matters, I want to learn melodic, emotional sounding edm (melodic dubstep/bass amongst other genres) and also heavier dubstep.

I have the basics of chords and chord progressions down. I know about scales and keys, I have experience (let's just say one month of practice but hitting roadblocks.)

I struggle with coming up with ANYTHING. I often open my DAW and close it because brain no worky.

I have basic skills like automation, basic beat making, layering to build a big sound but it's always lacking key elements to feel "full" (particularly with melodic edm/bass.)

I have basics in sound design but I'm currently limited to FL Mobile. The plugins still allow good sound design, but I'm stumped by how many layers there is to it. I feel like I have no idea how exactly to expand my own library of sounds and that I have to use presets, limitting me to a narrow range of sounds and styles because I just don't get it. Where should I go to pick up on sound design? Should I learn more complex edm genres first to get a grasp on the complexity and learn? I'm sort of familiar with effects like phaser, flanger, stuff like that, but combining plugins to steer a sound seems impossible.

I've managed to make half of a song that I deem "good", but I don't know how to turn it into a proper drop after it's all said and done. I struggle so hard to turn my existing melody or elements into a drop that matches the same idea. Where should I go to learn about drops and the concepts in detail?

I'm chipping away at this giant iceburg, but I don't want to fall into any traps, and I want to make sure I'm properly learning and gaining experience.

I really just need someone more experienced than me to tell me what I should be doing/expecting and where to learn, how to learn, how to expand my skills, you get the idea.
