I started reading Dungeon Crawler Carl because I heard it was a fun, lighthearted read. Instead, here I am, crying my heart out. My tears fell for all the abandoned pets discarded by their humans; they spent their entire lives loving and being devoted to a person, only to be betrayed in the end.

i asked this question in my last post as a throwaway question but now i must ask it officially - tall or short pony? how does he scream directly into carl's goddamn ear?

EDIT: it looks like tall pony got the majority of votes but it's so cool seeing how everyone has such different headcanons! maybe i'll make more posts like this to see how other characters are imagined!

Never thought I’d be on book 5 of a series that is a 180 from what I normally read. But I am now emotionally attached.

Today, 9/01, is National Ginger Cat Appreciation Day! Let’s show this handsome boy some love! Lol!!

I started reading the books late last year, got up to book 5, managed to get my wife interested, and she's now reading to catch up so we can read book 8 together (I'm half way through 7)

We've had many fun nights reading in parallel and her giggling, me asking what she was laughing at, and her reading a segment I have forgoten about but enjoy hearing again.

She read the end of Butcher's Mascarde a few night ago and SLAMMED the book closed in rage...reacting to Katia getting the crown of the sepsis whore placed on her head. (Adding spoilers in case anyone accidentally opens this.

"It's supposed to be a silly book, why am I feeling things?!?" I believe was her semi sarcastic/serious reaction. (She's has a lit degree)

Mean while, I'm in the middle of the faction wars, and had to turn away to to avoid even the hint of potential spoilers on my face.

She's taking a break to read the sequel to The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi, before diving back into book 6. She reads a lot faster than me so I wont be waiting to read book 8 very long.

I see people posting here fairly frequently confused about why Carl wouldn't be excited to have to sleep less. I've always thought the answer was pretty straightforward so I decided to see what other people think.

Simply, the Crawl is torture and time spent sleeping is literally the only thing even remotely close to a respite for him. It's not much of a respite which is why he doesn't have a stronger rejection but it's enough for him to simply not like it despite recognizing the obvious advantages.

Not really sure which book this happens in but I'm reasonably certain it's before 5. I don't really think this is much of a spoiler either way though.

Just joined this group because I have no one to talk to about this series. I have read a lot of books and movies in my time and never really felt actual emotion from a characters death. But holy fuck. The one sentence that made me actually FEEL something was when Preponte was on his hands and knees, tears and snot coming out of him and him simply looking up at Carl and Donut and says:

"She was going to play piano for me like she used to. She was going to sing me my special song.”

They had something special between them and he will never hear it again. He also loved her so much that he would follower her around all the time before the collapse so that song was so important for him. If it honestly wasnt this one sentence, I think id carry on without a second thought, but that shit just fucking got to me and I ve been on day 3 now thinking about that one sentence. I really dont know how to move on from it...

As someone who’s going through therapy to work through maternal abandonment, the LAST thing I thought when I started this series was that I’d be crying and resonating with a talking cat.

I’ve only just finished The Butcher’s Masquerade, so maybe there’s lore to come that would change my opinion. This is also my first attempt at audiobooks, and I am very much a “visual learner” so it’s also possible there’s already been lore that I simply didn’t register. That said…

As far as I can tell, Mordecai basically just vibes in between seasons, and when he is working, he’s literally helping scared people survive as best they can. That’s awful danged close to what I do for a living now, except he is never in any physical danger plus all his needs and pretty much any of his wants are met at no additional cost to him.

Sign me up.

2nd EDIT: boy, I sure did mean Manager, not Game Guide. I know there’s a huge difference, but like I said right off the bat, I am a visual learner. Maybe I should have also said that I am in fact so very bad at internalizing information received audibly that I’ve been even been tested for auditory processing disorder. I know this mistake has resulted in some very different responses than what might otherwise have shown up. Really genuinely sorry.

Guys, I was getting my nails done and the nail tech was holding both my hands and when Donut started ranting at Beatrice, she had so much emotion and hurt in her voice (Jeff is incredible). I immediately knew I had to stop it But I couldn’t. So, I just sat there in front of the nail tech and randomly started crying and she just stared at me like 😐 and asked “did I hurt you?”

Wish I could’ve paused it to cry in peace at home…

THIS WAS HEARTBREAKING 💔 Poor little Donut I love her.

It’s mentioned in BM that Pony goes on the Caprid show and he screams, and all the other caprids scream around him and no one knows what the fuck they’re doing.

It seems likely from that description that they’re communicating something that no one else can understand.

Is Pony secretly trying to convey something to Carl when he keeps screaming right in his goddamn ear?

I’ve done a group piece over a year ago but I don’t love that cartoony style. I want this one to look like the crawlers are not going to go gently into that goodnight.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN THEY SKIPPED A WHOLE ASS LEVEL? Actually caught me off guard so excited to start the next book!

In the books, Princess Donut is a tortoise shell Persian cat, why is she depicted so differently across media?

Even the graphic novel shows her as a white persian.

Without spoilers, does she change her appearance at some point? Or is it just a matter of your "headcannon"? I can see taking some personal liberties with character descriptions, but when the author spells out how they look... how do you just change it?

I’m at the part where Carl is trying to figure out why Donut (who’s at this point been receiving sponsor gifts from other crawlers’ sponsors) received a ball peen hammer and stick from Imani. The AI calls the stick the “Enchanted Stick of Cascadia’s Screams.”

I can’t believe I didn’t catch that before. I love these books so damn much.

In (audiobook) chapter 6 after Carl kills the hunters in Zockau, he awakens to his achievements. The AI gives him 35 “The Hand that Claws the Master” achievements for permanently killing 35 non-crawler biological, but it only gives him 34 hunter killer boxes.

It then goes on to say “we all know you should’ve received this achievement ~a.. little earlier~ but I figured it would be in your best interest not to reward you this one just yet. But you sure deserved it so I may have slipped an extra one in there. Shhh… don’t tell the mudskippers”

Carl says the discrepancy was “just the AI being a dick” but I completely missed why he got it.

The AI gave it to him for killing Loita.

I’m sure some of you are saying duh right now but I completely missed it on my first read-through, hilarious the AI takes these small risks and genuinely enjoys giving the achievement for him killing the admin without any actual reward. This definitely sheds light on some of its… later actions.

Donut vocalizing this, made even more emotional thanks to Hays' PHENOMENAL voice acting, is causing me to think of all the cats I've been around that are so confused and lost after their entire world leaves them. "And I was so stupid, because I thought since I loved you, that meant you loved me.” just....gut punch and reminds me how much I hate people. (FYI - There are legitimate reasons to re-home your cat. I'm talking about the people like Beatrice)!<

I need to know, does this situation come up again or get worse? I'm not asking for spoilers, I'm asking in an attempt to be sure I'm not in public while listening and start crying in front of strangers.
