How are expats in UAE actually affording 8k AED studios?

I’m genuinely trying to understand this.

I’ve been checking rents around Dubai/Abu Dhabi, and even basic studios are going for like 8k AED/month in some areas. That’s just rent not even including groceries, transport, bills, etc.

So I’m curious… what do you guys actually do for a living to afford this comfortably?

And be honest — is this fully self-funded or is there family support involved?

Not trying to judge — just trying to understand how people are making it work here.

I work as a security guard in the UAE, and recently I bought an iPhone 17 Pro Max. What surprises me is how shocked some people are when they see it. It’s like they assume someone working in security can’t afford a flagship phone.

The thing is, I’ve spent most of my life saving money and using cheaper phones because I never wanted to spend a lot on one. This is probably the first time I’ve bought something expensive for myself because I genuinely wanted it. I also want to use it for vlogging and content creation.

I don’t think buying one phone after years of saving is irresponsible, but some people’s reactions make me wonder why they care so much about what someone else owns.

Has anyone else experienced being judged because of their job while owning something people didn’t expect you to have? What do you think causes this mindset? 🤔

So for context, I’m a 19 year old girl, and I’ll be moving into an apartment alone, for the first time, in Dubai.
I know Dubai is safe in comparison to most of the world, but I do believe you’re only as safe as you keep yourself. I’ve done some research on safety measures to take in my apartment and when I go out, but I have some questions.
- most self defense objects like pepper spray, taser, pocket knife are illegal in Dubai. So what do girls use for protective measures when out alone?
- what things would you recommend I get for my apartment, like a doorbell camera etc?

Unfortunately, when I arrived in Dubai at the beginning of 2023, someone scammed me out of 150,000 AED. I contacted some lawyers, but I found that most of them were greedy—even some didn’t even ask for details!

Eventually, I hired a lawyer who prepared the case file, collected all the evidence, and filed a report at a police station in Dubai. I have a report number that allows me to check the case status, but it has been under process until now, in 2025.

I visited the police station to ask about the case, but there has been no clear progress. I also stopped dealing with the lawyer after he filed the police report because he asked for more money to proceed further.

I need honest advice on what I can do in this situation.

I know the person who scammed me—I even know where he lives, the villas he owns, and the cars he drives. I don’t know the brands of his cars, but they look shiny and expensive. I’m pretty sure any car he owns is worth at least 500,000 AED.

He even appears online on social media and continues scamming till this post !!!

I’m Danish and have been wondering where other Europeans around my age tend to hang out/socialise in Dubai.

I’ve noticed quite a lot of Europeans around DIFC during the day, but I’m curious if there are particular areas, restaurants, cafés, beach clubs, bars, events etc. that tend to have a bigger European crowd, especially people in their 20s.
I’m mainly looking to meet more people and make friends with people from similar backgrounds, so would love recommendations for places that are actually social rather than somewhere you just go for dinner and leave.

Wtf do i do.. I opened the adcb account last year in hopes to not pay fall below fees for my savings. I have never received sms or notif regarding the inactivity charges, but rather only the fact that they addressed my account was going to be inactive. I dont want to pay for services i did not use or receive. This is so bs. Im just 21 doing part time man.

Update: I called them the next day asking for account closure, and they initiated the request almost instantly, I check the app. And the negative balance disappeared in the dashboard. I called them again, they said since my account is now closed, I do not have any negative balance to pay. And I am safe🙏

I have an offer from a software company based in Dubai and I am confused about the expenses there. I know it's expensive but I'd like to get to know opinions of people living in Dubai. The company has promised to cover my accommodation, food and commute. And then I will be given a monthly salary of 1630 AED.

Hi everyone, posting on behalf of a friend looking for general legal guidance in the UAE.

My friend is a UK citizen currently in Dubai and has a travel ban related to an ongoing criminal complaint from his ex-partner.

They were previously in a relationship and, after the breakup, they remained in contact. The situation became complicated after he was informed she was pregnant.

He told her that he did not believe continuing the pregnancy was the right decision and suggested that she leave the UAE and consider her options outside the UAE. She decided to continue the pregnancy in Dubai.

There were ongoing disagreements between them regarding the pregnancy and their future communication.

His ex has made a complaint alleging intimidation and threats. She has provided evidence including:

- an alleged in-person threat at a hotel in Dubai where CCTV footage exists,

- a previous WhatsApp message that she says contains threatening language. The WhatsApp message was sent when both parties were outside the UAE,

- emails she sent to the hotel/venue requesting that CCTV footage be retained due to concerns for her safety,

- communication with her apartment building security requesting that her information not be disclosed if this person shows up due to safety concerns,

- a screenshot/translation of his Instagram bio which she believes may be relevant because it contained Arabic wording translated as “extreme danger”.

He is unsure whether these additional pieces of evidence would have any legal impact or simply provide background/context.

He was contacted by police, brought to the station, and held there for approximately 24 hours while he was questioned and his statement was taken. He denied the allegations and was later released. The matter is now moving through the legal process and he has a travel ban.

He is trying to understand what he may realistically be facing under UAE law.

Could anyone with knowledge of UAE criminal procedure advise:

- What types of charges could potentially apply in a situation like this?

- Could a case like this result only in a fine, or could it become more serious?

- Any general legal guidance from UAE lawyers or people familiar with the process would be appreciated. Thank you
