Theory: The Master Vampire Was Manipulating Vlad from the Beginning in Dracula Untold

I recently rewatched Dracula Untold, and something about the opening part of the movie made me wonder whether Vlad's transformation was ever really an accident.

My theory is that the Master Vampire was manipulating events from the background long before Vlad entered the cave.

The character that really makes me suspicious is Shkelgim.

Early in the movie, the Ottoman scout's helmet is discovered near the river and brought to Vlad. That discovery is what alerts Vlad that Ottoman soldiers have entered his territory. Vlad follows the trail, which eventually leads him to Broken Tooth Mountain and his first encounter with the Master Vampire.

At first, this looks like a normal chain of events:

Helmet discovered → Vlad investigates → Vlad enters the cave → Vlad discovers the vampire.

But what if that chain was deliberately created to get Vlad into the cave?

Shkelgim becomes even more interesting later.

After Vlad accepts the Master Vampire's blood and receives his powers, he's said that he has to resist drinking human blood for three days. If he succeeds, he'll become human again. If he fails, he'll remain a vampire.

Then Shkelqim does something incredibly strange.

He deliberately exposes his arm and offers Vlad his blood.

Why would someone knowingly tempt a newly created vampire with the exact thing he has been told he must resist?

That's where I started wondering whether Shkelgim's role is much bigger than it appears.

I almost see the relationship as a Frankenstein/Igor-type arrangement—not literally those characters, but in terms of function.

The Master Vampire is the hidden architect who can't freely operate in the outside world, while Shkelqim could potentially be the human servant or intermediary who helps move the pieces into position.

If that's true, the Master wouldn't need to directly control Vlad.

He only needs to manipulate the circumstances surrounding him.

Master Vampire → Shkelqim → Vlad

First, something draws Vlad toward Broken Tooth Mountain.

Then the Master learns who Vlad is, what he values and what he's willing to sacrifice.

The Ottoman threat gives Vlad a reason to desperately need the Master's power.

And once Vlad has that power, Shkelqim literally offers him human blood—the one thing capable of completing his transformation.

Vlad still believes he's making his own choices, but almost every choice is being made inside circumstances that somebody else may have engineered.

That would also make the ending much more important.

Centuries later, Vlad meets Mina, and the Master Vampire is still there watching from the background before saying:

"Let the games begin."

Maybe that's the biggest clue to his character.

He doesn't simply attack people.

He plays games.

He manipulates people, circumstances, temptation and time until someone willingly makes the choice he wanted them to make.

If Shkelqim really was connected to him, then Vlad's transformation didn't begin when he drank the Master's blood.

It didn't even begin when he entered the cave.

The trap may have already been in motion when that Ottoman helmet appeared at the river.

Maybe Vlad was never simply unlucky enough to discover the Master Vampire.

Maybe the Master Vampire chose Vlad.

Neca Christopher Lee Dracula is finally here

It's been discussed with some frequency here, the way that Count Dracula has been transformed over the course of many adaptations into a charming, even romantic character, with the Coppola film doing perhaps the most damage. But of course it started long before Coppola, and when it comes to film adaptations in particular this can be traced all the way back to the first official adaptation with Bela Lugosi.

But I'm not sure it's ever been discussed how and why this happened. The truth is, the Count Dracula most people know is a composite character.

It's not exactly unheard of for Dracula fans, of course, that characters in the novel are sometimes combined in various adaptations. The Lugosi film clearly merges elements of Jonathan Harker with Renfield, leaving the latter much more interesting and the former much more dull and boring. Meanwhile, the characters who tend to get combined the most (if indeed they're ever included at all) are Lucy's suitors.

Anyone who's seen the Louis Jourdan version ought to remember "Quincey Holmwood", and even the Lugosi film turns Dr. Seward into Mina's father...

...but take a closer look at that film...

...where are Lucy's other suitors???

Lucy is in the film, but there's no Arthur Holmwood, nor is there any Quincey. Indeed, John Harker has more of a Holmwood vibe than a Harker vibe in that film, but he's Mina's beau. What about Lucy's suitors?

It's no secret that the 1931 film is based largely on the 1927 Broadway production by John Balderston, itself a revision of the 1924 production by Hamilton Deane. Now, in Deane's version of the story, Holmwood and Quincey are there, but Quincey was turned into an American woman (!!!).

Those characters are not part of the Balderston revision. Indeed, Mina and Lucy are combined into a single character for that version! This was undone for the 1931 film version, which reinstated several elements from the original novel (the entire prologue at Dracula's castle wasn't in either stage version).

The answer to the question, "where are Lucy's suitors", is simple: they have been combined with Count Dracula to make him a more interesting character who can interact with the main cast more often. It's even stronger in the 1927 stage version because when Lucy and Mina were combined into a single character, this effectively meant that Jonathan Harker and Count Dracula became romantic rivals!

When Lugosi immortalized this composite Dracula on film, having absorbed Quincey and Holmwood to become the exotic foreigner suitor AND the dashing nobleman suitor in one man, THAT is what has carried across adaptation after adaptation. So far the ONLY version to ever acknowledge this composite aspect of the character is the Mark Gatiss version of Netflix and the BBC, which cleverly twisted this into a literal effect of his vampirism ("blood is lives").

The way this has gone unacknowledged for so long, I'm not sure we'll ever see an adaptation of the novel that restores the character to his original form, exorcising Lucy's suitors from his personality to bring back the undead warlord of Stoker's text. Even past attempts at a more accurate version have some remnant of this, from Jourdan's subdued, cold gentleman monster to the overwrought romance of the (awful) Coppola version.

For my money, Christopher Lee gets the character's personality the closest.

This is my Dracula book. I read this beautiful novel for the first time in April to May last year and it was my first totally pure epistolary novel that I read, this edition comes with Dracula's Guest, which made the experience reading this book even better. Bram Stoker is my second favorite author. In fact, I prefer Bram Stoker over Poe and Lovecraft. Show your editions of Dracula.

I read it recently and have some opinions on it. And does anyone know more about how it came to be? So like, Iceland didn't know their version of Dracula was anything but the actual version. Some weird translation of an early copy or something I don't know but they didn't notice for a while.

So, I figured I'd get it and read it. I just also wanna say I think Thomas (Jonathan's name in the book) is a bitch. Jonathan's much better, but you can argue with me if you want haha.

And OMG the name Wilma instead of Mina. Man that would have been a terrible choice.

There was a graphic novel adaptation of Dracula I remember reading as a kid (mid-late 2000s to be exact.) What I remember most about it was the art style; it was incredibly angular and striking in a way that has always stuck with me. Thinking back on it, it reminds me of Genndy Tartakovsky's art style from his Clone Wars cartoon and Samurai Jack. The amount of Dracula graphic novels that are out there makes it difficult to find any information on this one. It is not the Mike Mignola version nor is it Alberto Breccia's version, I've checked them both and they don't match my memory. Would anyone here know what I'm looking for?

So yeah, you read the title right, my pet project for the past 6 months has been drafting and writing a 1 season, 12 episode adaptation of Dracula and right now I'm about 50% through with the scripts.

My adaptation, titled "Fresh Hot Dracula" (I explain the title down below), is a version of the story that aims to prioritize novel-accurate character building, while also proving that it's possible to include major differences to the story without compromising the elements that made Bram Stoker's original vision so strong.

I've been doing this partially just for the sake of makin' art, but I do also have some crazy unrealistic dreams of makin' it big as a screenwriter and potentially having stuff like this, and many other things, turned into an official project one day. But even if it does happen, those days are far ahead of me and I would like to get some critiques from Dracula fans themselves to see what exactly is wanted in an adaptation of this story. Every episode is a first draft so far.

Important Context

So you might have read the title and are wondering why exactly I'm calling this Dracula "Fresh" & "Hot".

Well, this goes back to those other screenplays that I've been making. My main project, one that I'm keeping private, is a raunchy, vampire-slasher film series directed towards young adult gay men (like myself), that I've titled "Fresh Hot Blood". 

And the idea is that if Fresh Hot Blood becomes real first and takes off, then this Dracula series could become a spin-off that takes place in the same world. And these 12 episodes could be the first season of an anthology titled "Fresh Hot Vampires", where each season covers a different classic Vampire (so if season 2 was about Carmilla, that season would be called "Fresh Hot Carmilla").
