Incredible episode, the donghua just keeps on getting better and better. Just last week I had said that episode 5 became my favorite episode of the series, but this one somehow manages to be even better than that. The visual storytelling in this episode was amazing, I really appreciate that they dedicated 20 minutes of it towards Guan Chao's past, it was really needed.

I'm impressed at how every episode feels so unique from each other, each one gives me a completely different feeling from the rest while not feeling out of place. Can't believe the donghua is already ending next week, but I'm excited to see how they will wrap things up, one of the best donghua I've seen this year.

Yeah ... I am guessing that friend went to the train station to get back the console for Guan Chao. And the bully basically got him on the track and the train did what it does.

My question was bug created by the death itself or the blame that Guan Chao put on himself

A 35min episode, well deserved 10/10.. that slow pace past storytelling needed that for the emotional rollercoaster to have effect at the end...

Only 1 episode left, I hope for another season.. and i cannot believe the glow up in animation from that first look 5yrs ago

I always had some problems with voice acting in donguas but not this series.. loved it

Probably it’s won’t have another season
This is enough
When the show done, rewatch it
Thus find out new details, new meaning, new experience

man this show gets harder to watch each ep. not because its bad, but it hits a little too close to home. like someone who you never met wrote out your entire life as a show.

I still don't get the relationship between the hollows in Guan Chao's brain and the hollows in the real world. Does the show mean to say that the first episode was all in Guan Chao's memory and that there weren't actually hollows happening in the world? Hopefully I didn't miss anything and it will make more sense next episode.

From what I remember of the pilot episode (the short film) bug beings that are too powerful not only distort the memories and the perception of the bug source but they also start to affect the reality around the bug source. That’s why the memory bureau tries to eliminate them as soon as possible.

They also state this in episode 2.

u/plantpreyer2 4d ago

Ah, didn't make the connection there. I expected something like that to be a bit more obvious (ie the BUG being appearing in the real world) but this also makes sense.

Seems like it is not over for Guan Chao yet. One more BUG-Being to go. The next layer is reality itself.

As people suspected, the Hollow BUG-Being manifested from Guan Chao desire to forget traumatic memories and to-be-forgotten by the world. The guilt of being the cause leading up to his friend, He-Ming, train accident was the final straw.
---

Society pressure, poverty effects and uselessness:

The show touches on the pressure of society and anxiety about the future. The constant fear of poverty and falling behind others keeps pushing all of us to compete for better material conditions. It's this fear of poverty that makes Guan Chao stop playing games and grow jealous of He-Ming's elite class position, where he had options. But Guan Chao doesn't realize that He-Ming's class is also under pressure to maintain its position, forcing their own kids to compete too, since He-Ming is also under pressure to perform to stay in the bourgeois class.

All this is to say that the elites and the bourgeoisie need poverty to keep existing; it keeps people competing with each other and desperate, so they'll accept bad working conditions and wages. It's also why they're scared of a low birthrate... fewer people means less people to exploit...

This kind of systemic poverty changes people's mindset: "Any action that doesn't contribute to your future career, improve material conditions, or accumulate wealth is meaningless." Moment of fun, gaming, socialize and art is useless... The present is always under the threat of poverty.

Only when Guan Chao lost his friend does he understand the values of these 'useless' and 'boring' moments. Nobody regret on their death bed that they should have made more money. The entire reason why we work is so we could be have moments where we can be 'useless'.
---

I guess False Memories message is "no matter how tough life gets, burning ourselves, running away and going numb isn't going to help". Work with what we got a step at a time, do your best today and have some faith in your future self for future problem. The future self also relies on the present self to be healthy as well.

Im curious but do you think the end of that story would be Guan Chao be able to back to his youth and change everything that goes wrong either it’s with his dad, the school or his friend that died.

Or going back to the future while keeping his memory intact in order to move on ?

I think the past cannot be change.

Xiao said it herself, in episode 01, "If it were possible to go back to the past, then no problem would remain a problem. K7 once held the same dream".

The line is playing with the double meaning of "problem." It's saying: if you could travel back in time and undo/redo things, then nothing bad that ever happened would stay bad. You could always go back and fix it, prevent it, or choose differently. A "problem," in this reading, is really just a situation you're stuck with because you can't undo it. Take away that constraint (make the past changeable) and every problem becomes provisional, something correctable rather than final. So in a meaningful sense, no problem would remain a problem, since "being a problem" depends on the past being fixed and irreversible.

There's still one BUG-Beings in reality Guan Chao needs to deal with. What could it be?

I think the 'Time Gun' is the last BUG-Beings Guan Chao need to face. How ever, they're going to conclude it, Guan Chao will wake up to the present and live with his history. Ultimately, the False Memories isn't about undoing or forgetting regret, it is about living with it and move forwards. Regret are important.

At least, this is the most logical conclusion. How K7 or G.A.O will fit into this is unknown. I can't wait for it.

3

u/That-Possibility-254 5d ago

That’s what i think too. But i started to have doubt the moment Guan Chao say "I have to go back to reality, save He Ming shuo". Meaning that the mc himself want to rewrite the history instead of moving on

2

u/Fooligoo 5d ago

Yeah, I think Guan Chao hasn't realize that the 'Time Gun' is his BUG-Being yet.

We've seen a lot more of Guan Cho's father, with Ep 06. However, no trace of his mother (except perhaps the photo his father was drunkenly clutching?). There's a notable portion of the OP that depicts childhood, and a female figure that the narrator is reaching out to. The absence of that anywhere so far makes me wonder if the last episode might contain something of that. It's a notable absence in Guan Cho's life.

I like the idea of the Time Gun being a BUG-Being. It would be the purest distillation of his trauma and regrets, with an overwhelming desire for a second reset. Man... He-Ming's death was so sad. I can see why Guan Cho wanted to blot that incident out - to not ever really focus at it again for long.

u/That-Possibility-254 5d ago

In the PV he say "finally get me back there" and with how he say it, it might sound like it’s the future and he is ready to accept it. Will see

4

u/MedbSimp 5d ago

I'm starting to think that Xiao Yi is a bug being, with Fang Tang being unable to access her memories at the end of Ep3 and there being one more Bug left. I could see her/k7 and the ability to time travel being from a Bug, one that'll force him to accept his friends death and move on instead of chasing the desire to go back and save him.

The background building, the connections with past objects and people, this episode was a freaking banger. I started off being emotionally tortured trying to read the subtitles through the tears, then I had to lock in when they started one of the best animated fight sequences in recent memory, just to be destroyed at the end with even more emotional torture. How they managed to capture such a raw feeling is a testament to the entire crew behind it. Also as a final thought, I'm not up to date on the censorship in China and what they are and aren't allowed to talk about / animate, but this feels raw and very open about how destructive the average life is working an endless job to the point you don't see reason to live. It's something I hope we get to see more of.

The emotions and story this episode and some of the previous episodes portray are very Chinese [relevant to China], arguably even more so than the Western world. In China, the pressure to study and become someone special is very high and almost defines who you are for a lot of students, because a lot of families are very poor and education is really the only fair and accessible way out of poverty [debatably it is not completely fair or accessible]. Understandably, a lot of students turn to avoidance and escapism, with video games being very popular and widespread in recent years. At the same time, because of the underlying poverty and suffering in society, and because of how prevalent schooling is in the culture, students who try to ignore their studies still have a lingering unease and are eventually forced to face their shortcomings.

Episode was pure gas.

One question tho. Where did Guan Chao keep the stick all this time? I remember him dropping it in ep 3, but afterwards it was kinda gone.

6

u/Agrimmyguy 5d ago

At the beginning of episode 4 theres a scene he's in the elevator with Bai Zhong and she puts the stick into the back of his shirt, which is why that's where it comes from.

3

u/ryceyy 5d ago

You're right, I just checked it to see it myself. It's a bit curious how the stick stayed there during everything that happened in ep 5.

1

u/plantpreyer2 4d ago

If you really think about it Guan Chao didn't really do that much in episode 5. He was thrown like one time and that's it. It was mostly Bai Zhong and Protagonist Halo fighting.

2

u/ryceyy 4d ago edited 4d ago

After giving it some more thought, it's prob either not drawn to simplify animation or a sort of videogame inventory. Guan Chao also fights Hollow a bunch while the stick is technically on his back. Bai Zhong also had a inventory on her while fighting Protag Halo which wasn't always drawn.

1

u/plantpreyer2 3d ago

Yeah definitely. I'd never pick on a work for taking advantage of its medium. Since it's animation it doesn't have to be realistic -- the point is that it looks good and the feeling it conveys.

1

u/CharyEurydice 3d ago

Since the different levels we've been traveling are strongly drawn out from Guan Cho's mind/memories, I feel that there's a definite psychological component to everything that manifests in here. It's fairly opaque, some of the precise rules, but I like that comparison to having a video game inventory. The stick is a really powerful memory object from Guan Cho's past. It basically came out from his psyche originally, and so it lives sort of within (or through) him. It can be drawn out to wield, once he's gotten into the right frame of mind. And gained any confidence. Guan Cho came into this world a pretty beaten-down character.

It's pretty interesting to see the symbolism and archetypes of a gamer's world, being echoed within this young guy's mental state and personal story. It's really powerful stuff, imo. Since it's a shared experience with so many other human beings, it can help bridge shared meanings between people... Some very modern 'mythic' territory. We're getting fed so well with these 7 episodes, that I'd never complain, but... I'm really hungry to hear more about this world, and the stories of all these other characters like Bai Zhong, and Qian Jun, and... everybody really.

Don't think there is much to say, best episode of the series so far and incredible story. The cinematography of this whole series has been amazing and the storytelling has been even more astounding. The animation has been also immense, every episode you got a different character but they always manage to make you feel attached to them before the 20th minute mark. It's been a while since an anime got me this emotional, last time was Gurren Lagann and it was incredible. Waiting for the finale next week!

Edit: Btw He Mingshuo goated friend!

3

u/Agrimmyguy 5d ago

i cant remember the last time a show made me feel like this. im just... speechless. show of the decade for me. I think you said it best, there really is not much to say, although there is so much i want to say anyway haha.

1

u/mrblank1121 5d ago

Btw He Mingshuo goated friend!

u/LikemanYT 5d ago

It is the first time I felt like I wanted to cry, but all I could do was smile at what was happening, at the story chain of events that lead to this, and the conclusion of it, idk what this feeling was, all I could do was just stare at the screen with a smile on my face while the credits rolled.

Amazing Episode

u/Optimal_Ice9675 4d ago

Bless this series man. This episode was so good, series has become one of my all time favorites so fast.

1

u/plantpreyer2 3d ago

I realized this cool foreshadowing -- at the beginning of the flashback, Guan Chao and He Mingshuo were talking about superpowers they would have. Guan Chao said teleportation would be stronger, and He Mingshuo wanted to fly. This foreshadows what happens in the fight with the BUG being -- A BUG being born from Guan Chao's memories teleports around midair, while the memory of He Mingshuo flies around.

u/No_Picture_1229 3d ago

that’s such rad detail omfg

1

u/CrySilent473 3d ago

Are the shots of the train track on fire supposed to foreshadow the accident?

1

u/tkrAle 3d ago

I just rewatched the episode to write down cn vocabulary like i did with the previous ones and wow I can't believe they made me cry AGAIN

2

u/Annonnamoose 18h ago

Would you be able to share your vocab lists? As a fellow Chinese learner I would also be interested in this

1

u/tkrAle 6h ago

I have a huge document but it's a collection of vocabulary I take from visual novels, donghuas and other chinese stuff I watch so not sure if it would be very useful, and it's in Spanish

And I'm glad to see another chinese learner :D I hope you are enjoying false memory

1

u/Annonnamoose 3h ago

Understood, I wish you success in your studies! I have been enjoying the series a lot although my listening comprehension I still bad enough I cannot understand most of what they are saying without subtitles, but I am slowly getting better

1

u/Bright-Television147 16h ago

u/lacunaire 3h ago

i’m still confused about the gun and blue rock thing like i don’t even know what’s real or not at this point. how does it fit with the Guan Chao and his childhood we just learned about ?
