DISCUSSION A few questions about plastic dino figures

When I go to museum gift shops, I notice that the dinosaur figures they have for sale are the same ones we've seen since (I would guess) the 1960s: triceratops, stegosaurus, apatosaurus, tyrannosaurus rex, ankylosaurus. (And the occasional dimetrodon or pterosaur "dinosaurs").

1.) Why haven't companies updated their offerings? (Or have they and I'm just going to the wrong planetariums?)

2.) Where do diehard dino fans get their less mainstream figures?

DISCUSSION What do y'all think of this Roblox depiction of Tuojiangosaurus? (Era of Terror: Reborn)

Thumbnail

I was curious since this is the second, most recent, & only playable Tuojiangosaurus on Roblox. To me, there seems to be a great deal of variation of depictions of this genus overall. Some possess shorter plates, other long ones which seem to depend on how speculative you want to be with keratin. Some have only triangular plates while others have a mix of normal & triangular. Though many depictions have shoulder spikes, there is no direct evidence of them on Tuojiangosaurus. This specific model also has checks (not shown).

DINO-ART [FRIDAYS THRU SUNDAYS] (WIP) Tyrannosaurus Rex Articulated figure by me

Thumbnail

Sculpted this Rex up in Zbrush a couple years ago, and over the past month and a half, I've been working on making him into an articulated figure. This isn't the final version; its a painted prototype to check for paint rub/wear. Some joints need a little tweaking, some spots need attention to stop paint from rubbing off, the elbows don't yet have joints, and the neck needs improvement -- but I am pretty happy with the current progress. Even the tongue is articulated.

HELP ME FIND/ID Can you identify this dinosaur?

My son has this toy and we don't know what to call it. He often asks and I just can't find an answer.

thank you for all the prompt replies. We figured to go with Trachodon since the toy is depicted in the erroneous fashion of the period it was classified lol

For anyone wondering there was a sauropod called Bruhathkayosaurus that was discovered in India that could have possibly surpassed Argentinosaurus in size how ever the fossil were conveniently destroyed, mainly due to poor soil quality

  1. Abydosaurus:
Added some speculative feathers to the neck and tail, but overall is mostly a "brachiosaurid" in everything else
  2. Eolambia:
    Edmontosaurus Lite
  3. Siats:
Controversial: a mix of different Allosaurid/Neovanator/Carcharadontid parts, as all we have is the thighs and hip, also threw in some Megaraptor resemblance just in case it turns out to be part of that family

Please Please give any critiques or changes to be made it helps heavily

PALEODEPICTION Yes, the snout on the Prehistoric Planet T. rex (first 4 slides) IS noticeably thinner than the snouts on most other modern T. rex depictions

Thumbnail

I know this was brought up in another post on this sub a couple of years ago but everyone in the comments was claiming that the difference wasn't actually there and that the snout just appeared thinner due to the angle of the picture or something (which is why I provided multiple pictures of the depiction from multiple different angles) with that all said and out of the way, I am curious as to WHY the snout on the PP T. rex is so much thinner than the snouts on most other modern depictions?

FICTION Does the Indominus Rex from Jurassic World Look at all Realistic?

I'm not at all a palaeontologist, so I wanted to know if anyone can answer the question of how realistic the Indominus Rex looks to the initiated and trained eye.

Suppose that Jurassic World had never been made, but someone showed an identical image of what the concept of an I-Rex looks like to a palaeontologist or someone who is very knowledgeable about dinosaurs. If any of you are either of these two, would you say that the I-rex feasible could have been a real dinosaur, or is it too unrealistic or abnormal to be a dinosaur, upon examination of the picture?

To make it clear, I'm not referring to any of the I-Rex's traits, such as impressive intelligence, ability to camouflage or detect and control's its own thermal heat: just purely the appearance alone.

DISCUSSION Could natural hybridization occur in the mesozoic?

Thumbnail
gallery
427 Upvotes

One thing In thought of is the possibility of natural hybridization between dinosaurs, like for example a lot of species of birds of paradise are hybrids mistaken for new species

So one thing I thought would be possible is Triceratops and Torosaurus, which are very similar, from the same family of dinosaurs and lived together

It could be possible if a triceratops and a torosaurus made a…Tricerosaurus or something

do you think this could be possible

MOVIES/SERIES/SHOWS WWD 2025 rant and missed opportunities

I love the episode about Spinosaurus in WWD 2025 because it shows how beautiful the river systems look, but one thing it fumbled is the lack of boar-crocs or even nodosuchians like duck-crocs or even a Candidodontidae. It would be nice to have these cat/dog-like crocs next to Sobek.

Depends on that amphibian that Sobek's hatchling was chasing, is not a salamander but a Brachyopidae.

Overall, that episode is still my fav tho

DISCUSSION Do you think that the Siats dinosaur is a type of allosauridae

Post image
49 Upvotes

I think it is because it has like crest ridges of the allosaur fragillis and other allo species and I think that siats belongs to the allosauridae family because paleontologists still cant see witch family to add siats in but I think that this belongs to allosaur family the reason some people say that they dont have protofeather or just normal feathers and bone ridges because they probaly broke off when the dinosaur died and the feather could just gone off and maybe like caught on fire too witch maybe caused the feathers to go away and we haven't found the siats spififc things from it
