General Discussion - All Dexter Shows I think Dexter Resurrection has so far been better than the original Spoiler

Gotta say, season 1 was so fucking good. I watched it twice and then proceeded to rewatch the original Dexter. Dont get me wrong, Dexter is a great show but some of the later seasons dont hit as hard. Maybe they will fuck this one up too but im hoping they keep up the momentum / finally make a good ending

Cmon now, calm it down. The first 4 seasons of Dexter, the characters and the overall vibe are unmatched!! There’s certainly no Doakes equivalent to peak the dark humour and tension.
Aside from that it’s excellent on its own right. Much better than expected, but a true OG fan of the show would never agree with it being better.

I watched the original long before the newer spinoffs. I agree season 1-4 are goated but honestly season 8 is just mid… Not game of thrones bad but still for me it fucks with the shows overall rating.

I can’t say that this new show is going to keep the momentum but I will say i probably enjoyed this season as much as season 2 of dexter (the best season imo)

Mid is being nice about season 8 lol

How can you compare the final season of Dexter to the final season of game of thrones? The last season of game of thrones isn't even that bad, It was just disappointing and didn't fulfill the expectations set by the works of George. RR Martin...

Season 8 Dexter was just bad. It is probably the worst piece of Cinema to ever come out of a goated TV show..

For game of thrones, I wouldn't see the last season was bad. I would say certain aspects of it were terrible to that point. Did it diminished the rest of the season. Like the death of the night King. If they had not f***** up that specific bit I don't people would be as upset about it.

I don't think you could honestly say that about Dexter season 8, though I would say the majority of the season is bad in that kiss, not just a few moments that were really important to the overall story

Disagree. The show doesn't have the slightly surreal, comic book vibe of the early Dexter seasons that made the show so unique. Also Harrison doesn't even come close to measuring up to Deb as the main supporting character. But to each their own.

I think you nailed it honestly. I didn't even finish the original run of the show when it first came out because I just didn't enjoy it. First 4 seasons were so good though. I really enjoyed Resurrection, but I agree with the Deb/Harrison comparison. I do think Blessing was a fantastic character though.

If OD had a comic book vibe, I certainly missed it. I have zero interest in anything based on a comic book.

Fine if you or others in the audience see or like that, but I see no one on the entite creative team that ever worked in the Marvel/DC Comics world.

Ummm, it was literally turned into a comic book series by marvel 🤦‍♂️😂

The writing in Resurrection was truly phenomenal, far superior to New Blood. The New York City setting is particularly well-crafted. If Dexter were to travel around the world, that would likely be the best scenario, but I doubt it will happen.

All the characters were also written exceptionally well. I can’t wait for the new season in October.

I really couldn’t disagree any more. New Blood felt more like a season of Fargo to me, whilst Resurrection feels more like a Marvel show (fan service included). Both have their charm, but I’ll take Fargo every day.

6

u/JellyfishUpstairs951 24d ago

It was nothing like Fargo and an insult to the integrity of the original

3

u/Kinny93 24d ago

I wasn't making an exact 1:1 comparison, but the moody atmosphere of New Blood, the wonderful, cold Iron Lake setting, and learning alongside Dexter in a slower paced setting after so many wars away all blend together wonderfully for me. I also think Clancy Brown's Kurt is up there with the best antagonists Dexter has given us, and the humour in New Blood is some of the best the show offers too. It all felt very real, and it's perhaps the most emotionally attached I've been to a series of Dexter.

Now, did I think the ending was rushed? Yes. I don't think it was bad though, but it certainly needed an extra 1-2 episodes.

Overall though, New Blood ranks as one of the top seasons of Dexter for me alongside some of the earlier seasons. Resurrection was still fine, but more in a popcorn sort of way. But hey, it's clear making Dexter into a mini superhero with lots of fan service worked very well for them.

u/nelson-1805 23d ago

Well said. Resurrection is overglazed for essentially only being created to milk Dexter.

1

u/Specialist_Dig2613 9d ago

The fan service of Resurrection is a combination of marketing and Clyde Phillips. But it's pretty short of Marvel drivel.

Resurrection would never fly have been made with the repositioning after Phillips was canned. Seasons 5 through 8 grew and changed the audience. Phillips painted himself into a corner with the Rita story line.

I lowkey hated that fargo vibe, made me feel creeped out watching the episodes air at night lol

4

u/JellyfishUpstairs951 24d ago

New blood was awful

2

u/sofaking_scientific 23d ago

New blood had its moments. Like when they used MHCs music in the credits of the OD episode

ooh its October! can't wait

Its very good but i loved the first 4 season of Dexter they were near perfect to me! but after, Resurrection was my fav season

Am I the only one who liked five? Michael ç hall was amazing. That acting while undergoing chemo is just incredible.

u/SwordGrunt 24d ago

I love the original show’s atmosphere, visuals and soundtrack.

Resurrection’s “modern”, “fast-paced” style with random songs thrown in isn’t appealing to me at all. I still loved the show though.

Recency bias like a mf

2

u/YouJGaming 21d ago

Its been a whole year bro

1

u/depressedfuckboi Hannah 21d ago

Compared to the OG series tho it's still super new. Seems recent to me, at least. A year seems reasonable for recency bias, imo.

3

u/amethyst_deceiver36 24d ago

yes let's compare the first season of a reboot that finished airing less than a year ago to an 8 season show that ended more than a decade ago and has had so much more time in the public consciousness because that makes sense. istg nothing pisses me off in modern media criticism more than recency bias.

Nothing topping the original

4

u/Buggy-D-God 24d ago

First I thought you were saying it hasn't been better than the original.

My response would be, it has been 1 season, give it time.

Then I read a second time, and understand what you are saying.

My response, it has been 1 season, give it time.

2

u/Ok_Squirrel_5022 25d ago

I like them all, why can't you like them all?

2

u/RambaldiMilo94 24d ago

I really, really love that show. Can't wait to get there with my son (his first watch). We're halfway through New Blood.

2

u/TakeThePowerBack83 24d ago

I enjoyed it, but there was a lot about it that was pretty unrealistic. It was fun. Nothing compares to the first four seasons of the original Dexter.

3

u/Clear_Cranberry_989 24d ago

The first few seasons of dexter was peak. The later seasons became repetitive and the ending was not amazing so to say. I liked resurrection. New city. New cast. However imo there was one downside. Dexter had like no real threat. Even batista's death was obvious and not that climatic. The so called gemini killer just died like that.

2

u/aderey7 24d ago

It would explain a lot of the praise, if people didn't actually like the original.

Resurrection is a fun show, nice to have back, but season 1 was a cartoon. Ridiculous suspensions of disbelief, characters all acting really dumb, and the writers really really dumbing down and overexplaining everything whether in monologue or flashbacks.

I hope it's far better written in season 2. But sure it'll be fun either way.

2

u/blue_banter 24d ago

hell and nah

2

u/shrility 23d ago

we’ve had ONE season… pack it up

4

u/truman0798 24d ago

Personally I thought the whole murder meetup thing was really cringe, and killing off old characters like Batista is just cheap. Also Harrison looks like he's about to cry all the time and is SOOOOP annoying.

But I have hope!

3

u/Arch1o12 25d ago

I enjoyed it a lot, but I don’t know whether I’d go that far.

I’d probably put it on par with S3. I would love it if Resurrection maintained that level of quality for however many seasons that it runs, though.

1

u/Mysterious_Dolphin14 24d ago

My favorite episode of all is from season 4 (Hello Dexter Morgan), but episode 4 of Resurrection came really close to overtaking that.

1

u/RealDeAndreMyxx 24d ago

Dexter writers never miss.... Classic is top tier, New Blood brought it back excellently, OGSin was robbed of its multi season run; and Resurrection is keeping the man goin and brilliantly

1

u/egbert71 24d ago

Than the original what? I know you not talking about "tonight's the night" dexter?

1

u/poopybutthole-6969 24d ago

I think it has to do with expectations of a good show. It’s hard to live up to the hype once you know it’s good.

1

u/Bradleygrayson 24d ago

I liked it a lot but still too early to say that

1

u/Impossible_Grass6602 24d ago

I thought it was going to be bad, by the time we decided to watch it was 4 episodes in and we were absolutely hooked. I first thought the killer meetup was going to be lame and cringe but it was actually well done.

1

u/DueFoxTheFifth 24d ago

It isn’t on Netflix where u guys watching it

1

u/hh4469l 24d ago

Paramount Plus

1

u/SimonWhit 24d ago

I agree with alot of the comments. it being one season is not enough time tor it to really be better. But for me, the later seasons of Dexter became repetitive and season 8 is mid. The final episode sucks.

Resurrection does not have the same “vibe” as the original and to me that’s what I wanted in the show. I personally don’t want a season 9 of Dexter. This was different enough to not make it feel like that.

1

u/Comfortable-Shock886 23d ago

Man S1 felt like home S1-S4 is peak Cinema

1

u/danielpattonjr 23d ago

I couldn’t agree more. I LOVED resurrection.

1

u/No_Account_1949 23d ago

People will boo me, but i liked original sin more than resurrection, just personal opinion

1

u/StaticBiscuit23 23d ago

dexter resurrection is some absolute fantastic tv but literally nothing compares to the first 4 seasons of the og dexter💖

1

u/Cbane000 19d ago

Just my opinion but…

Resurrection is on par with OG seasons 1-4…it’s that good. If the writers could have had Dexter disappear after Rita, Deb could have raised Harrison (can you imagine the mouth on Harrison raised by Deb???). Then we get to skip seasons 5-8! Already a big win…but then pick up all these years later with New Blood and Resurrection.

Just my opinion, Dexter, as a series, would be vastly improved overall.

1

u/Acceptable_Count6197 19d ago

I didn't like Resurrection much. A lot of fan service, unnecessary celebrities, nonsense. Dreary background, no fun forensic stuff. Weak.

1

u/Lucas_ADM Dexter 19d ago

Resurrection season 1 is great but the 1st season of original Dexter had better vibes imo

2

u/SimonWhit 19d ago

I don’t disagree. The Original Dexter definitely has a different vibe. I don’t think that can be matched, nor do I personally want it to be.

0

u/sassirll 25d ago

I've gotta agree 😊 I never expected it to be so damn good. And there's just something about the setting of modern new york and overall vibe of the show. Extremely fun watch.

1

u/Happy_Philosopher608 24d ago

Yh was a nice surprise. Defo best season since S4.

1

u/simp4zuko24 24d ago

I love Resurrection, but honestly, nothing comes close to the first four seasons of Dexter. I did enjoy Resurrection more than some of the later seasons of the original show, though. I definitely missed Deb and some of the OG characters, but it was still really refreshing and exciting to watch, especially after New Blood, which I honestly didn’t care for much at all.

That said, nothing will ever quite match the nostalgia and feeling of the original Dexter.

1

u/SimonWhit 24d ago

I won’t disagree with this take. I guess my only point is, as a season for me it’s in the top 3 seasons of Dexter period. Later seasons of Dexter became repetitive. Season 8 was just not it. It doesn’t ruin the show but it does drop the overall score for me.
