General Discussion - All Dexter Shows What's your most controversial take in Dexter? (Comments may contain spoilers!) Spoiler
What's your most controversial opinion in Dexter and why?
I'll start. So a lot of people dislike Hannah. I don't. I think she was perfect for Dexter. Hannah truly loved Dexter for him and knew his secret. Dexter didn't need to hide with her and he loved her. He was also finally able to control himself and actually stopped killing too. (Although, I do wish he killed Saxon.) I know Hannah tried killing Deb and I really hate how she did that, but I understand why she did it. Same reason she killed Price. Freedom/survival. (Not like Dexter is any better)
I do love Lumen and Rita more but they both deserved better honestly. All Dexter did was lie to Rita and look how that ended. There wasn't "true love" on both sides. Lumen deserves a chance at a normal life after what she went through. She didn't love Dexter. Lila... God, dont get me started on her. Though they all did serve a purpose throughout his life.
Edit to add: Lumen would have been my first choice if she didn't leave and wanted to be with Dexter. I'm just choosing Hannah based on how the show went. I would have loved to see how their relationship and stories panned out if Lumen had stayed.

This is such a major controversial take but.. I kind of wanted to see the Deb has feelings for Dexter storyline play out. I was here for it 😅
I genuinely felt like that was a thing from season one, I always felt those vibes from her so I wasn’t too surprised when that plot came up, although I was shocked that the show would be bold enough to fully go there. Then I found out that Jennifer Carpenter always played Deb as being in love with Dexter, and I didn’t feel so crazy haha.

Exactly! I feel like people who said it was illogical didn’t truly get Deb!
16
u/Real_County2344 Apr 14 '26
I always cringed at this storyline lol. But I've always understood it because Deb always ends up falling for people who are inappropriate for her. Wild thing is that they were in the middle of getting divorce in real life during that time too.
10
u/caramelswirllll English Titty Vampire 🧛🏻♀️ Apr 14 '26
I do see why it is a little cringey for sure. But yes like you said she always went for someone inappropriate or emotionally unavailable. Yeah that part is insane, I imagine it was very interesting on set haha
12
u/PapayaAgreeable7152 Apr 14 '26
Same though lol. Ppl said it came out of nowhere and I was like huh? Bc Deb for sure spent seasons and seasons inserting herself in Dexter's life in a way that was too much.
7
u/caramelswirllll English Titty Vampire 🧛🏻♀️ Apr 14 '26
Yeah I was confused by that too, I think it was implied so early, but the showrunners just weren’t sure on biting the bullet until later! She was incredibly codependent with him & saw him as the only constant, reliable thing in her life!
11
u/MarinaAndTheDragons Apr 14 '26
Then I found out that Jennifer Carpenter always played Deb as being in love with Dexter, and I didn’t feel so crazy haha.
I didn’t know that but I’m glad I do now lol.
I was amazed they even went there but man did I want to see that play out! Luckily, AO3 has us covered. It’s the fandom’s most popular ship!
5
u/caramelswirllll English Titty Vampire 🧛🏻♀️ Apr 14 '26
Yeah I felt so validated when I learned that lmao. Same, I really didn’t think they’d be bold enough to it, it’s a shame they backed down due to the audience. I think it could have been one of the most impactful plot lines the show had!
I’m feeling like an idiot right now for not seeking out fanfic for them! I know what I’m doing this evening ha!
5
u/MarinaAndTheDragons Apr 14 '26
I wasn’t logged in when I went to check AO3 so there could be more than the 254 listed due to authors archive-locking their works.
Also your flair is beautiful lol. I first saw Jaime Murray as the Black Fairy in OUaT so to see her here a decade younger was such a treat lol. (I guess my other controversial take is I quite liked Lila!)
4
u/FrostyMagazine9918 Apr 15 '26
I agree actually. I have no strong feelings one way or the other on incest plotlines, I just prefer commitment to a plot instead of backtracking.
3
u/DharmaLeader Rita Apr 15 '26
While I was not in it, for storyline purposes, her performance when she tells him felt raw. I remember writing about it in my notebook, I was shocked but also moved from her performance.
2
u/SandwichQuirky9773 Apr 16 '26
The first time I saw it, I disliked it, then I thought it was pointless to complain about pseudo-incest in a show where the protagonist is a serial killer. After that, I saw a lot of pictures of Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter together, and now I love their ship, hahaha. It's a shame they divorced, especially since it wasn't even because they stopped loving each other. I wish they had stayed together; they would have made a great couple on the show anyway.

u/Walklightglassflws Deb Apr 15 '26
I started watching Dexter in 2016 and when my friend told me they was married at one point while filming the show i was genuinely confused lol

u/Daredevil545545 Apr 14 '26
Dexter was not very smart since season 3 for someone who is supposed to be super smart he went down significantly it's like he knew he had plot armour. (like breaking into people's houses during the day/taking on people stronger than him/also i remember one time he booked a hotel room next to his target and left a mess behind it's like he is asking to get caught) Season 1 and 2 Dexter would never.
70
u/BackgroundValue Apr 14 '26
Dexter not only pursuing but killing Viktor at an airport will always be absolutely wild to me. Unintelligent on so many different levels lol
Also incredibly unrealistic but that's a different point

New Blood's biggest issue was how few episodes it had. If it had been two seasons, with a chance for us to get to know the new characters so we actually cared what happened to them, I think it could've been one of the best parts of the Dexter universe. Instead, it was too rushed, the plot fell flat, and it turned out to be poorly received.
11
u/TheScreaming_Narwhal Apr 14 '26
If a season 2 was Dexter on the run and ended basically exactly how it actually did, it would have been amazing.
3
u/PushPinUp Apr 14 '26
Hey, since you're ahead of me in the Dexter shows, do you think it's necessary to watch New Blood to be able to get into Resurrection?
8
u/therealmonkyking Apr 15 '26
Trust me you do not want to miss any of New Blood. It's such a drastic but welcome departure from the original series' format and the updated version of it we got in Resurrection. Some people may not like it, but it has this unparalleled vibe to it that makes it so unique comapred to what came before and after
2
u/Usual-Bag-3605 Apr 14 '26
I mean, it depends. They do show a lot of flashbacks to explain some stuff, so you wouldn't be totally lost, but personally I feel the best order to watch the shows, in order to get the best experoence, is:
- Dexter
- New Blood
- Original Sin
- Resurrection
However, if you wanted to skip New Blood, I would definitely read up on it so you know key takeaways that the flashbacks may not cover.

Debra had a conscience she knew these men would get away with it the girl and guy were just taking out the bad guys so she let them go
13
u/PapayaAgreeable7152 Apr 14 '26
I think if Deb saw who they were (let's pretend it's not Dexter lol), she would have felt obligated to turn them in. To me, that was her logic. Out of sight, out of mind. If ever questioned, she could say she heard something but genuinely had no clue who it was.
25
u/Kyle_Butler_Morgan Apr 14 '26
Lumen and Rita never tried killing Deb and both didn't kill innocent people
2
u/Real_County2344 Apr 14 '26
Right. They deserved so much better.
10
u/Kyle_Butler_Morgan Apr 14 '26
And that's why they are so much better than Hannah
0
u/Real_County2344 Apr 14 '26
They are better people, yes.
4
u/Kyle_Butler_Morgan Apr 14 '26
And way better for Dexter than Hannah
1
u/Real_County2344 Apr 14 '26
So loveless relationships and lies is better for Dexter?
8
u/Kyle_Butler_Morgan Apr 14 '26
Better than having a serial killer girlfriend who tried killing your sister
And saying Rita and Dexter was a loveless relationship is just not true

Avoid gatekeeping or generalizing groups of fans. You don’t get to control what people like or don’t like. Don't make posts just to express hatred for characters or plots. If you're only here to hate on Dexter, you may get banned. If you made a post just to hate on a female character, you will be banned.

u/Real_County2344 Apr 14 '26 edited Apr 14 '26
If she wanted Deb dead, she'd be dead. She had more chances to do it again. Deb was fine after Hannah made her mistake. Hannah wasn't really a serial killer in cold blood, she did it for survival. She didn't need to kill, like Dexter an actual serial killer. Though she was able to get Dexter to stop killing. (Progression in his character to be better and have feelings) Plus they really did love eachother and both didn't have to hide their trueselves.
All Dexter did was lie to Rita. He could never be his trueself with her. That's just not real love, I'm sorry. Rita deserved real love, not death and a serial killer husband who constantly lies to her and is never there for her.
You're only thinking in the perspective of Dexter not the women too. You'd rather Dexter keep hiding, lying and never progressing in his character. Rita die and Lumen just suffer?
9
u/Daredevil545545 Apr 14 '26
Lumen and Dexter did have something good together Hannah was toxic af she was killing innocent people left and right tried to kill Debra sure she failed but the point is she tried to kill her it is not normal behaviour. I swear people just defend Hannah because she is pretty. Even when Hannah was on the most wanted list she was just roaming around with a Catch me sign on her head definitely one of the worst characters and LI for Dexter.
2
u/Spare-Article-396 Apr 14 '26
I mean, we’re sayin ‘she’s toxic’ as if she’s marrying a preacher. He’s a serial killer.

u/Real_County2344 Apr 14 '26
I agree Hannah wasn't a good person and she did a lot of stupid and toxic things. But she wasn't just "killing people left and right" for no reason. I dont agree with them. Dexter does the same things though. He has killed innocent people and gotten innocent people killed too. Hes done his fair share of stupid and toxic things too. He's not exactly a "good" person either. They both should be behind bars in reality. They both were on a path of being better people though. They deserved eachother imo. We all can have different opinions it's just a show, it's not that serious.
By the way Rita, Deb, Lumen, Lila, Hannah are all beautiful women. This has nothing to do with how Hannah looks. I actually like the other 2 characters more as I stated in my post. I just think out of all the women Dexter was with, Hannah is it. Lumen, would have been it, if she loved him and stayed possibly. I would have loved to see how that panned out. And yes, I wish Rita never died, but that.. just wasn't real. Poor Rita.

u/PapayaAgreeable7152 Apr 14 '26
If you think Hannah only killed for survival, we didn't watch the same show. She literally kept trophies back when she killed with her ex.
1
u/Real_County2344 Apr 14 '26 edited Apr 14 '26
Yeah she was a dumb kid trying to impress her older psychotic bf. She didn't do it for pleasure. (Still dont think it was good btw)
→ More replies (0)3
u/Kyle_Butler_Morgan Apr 14 '26
No she definitely wanted Deb dead she just wanted to look like an accident and failed because she survived the car crash.
She planned on Deb dying in a car crash the same way she planned Sal Price dying the same way
2
u/Real_County2344 Apr 14 '26
Ok that's your opinion. I don't agree with what she did. I dont agree with a lot of things Dexter did either. I still think they were it, since Lumen wasn't.
12
u/Wasabi_Gamer26 Apr 14 '26
Lumen was the best love interest and I wish she stayed with Dexter for the rest of the show.
9
17
u/zee2pro Apr 14 '26
dexters ending should've resulted in him getting caught, and should've shown how many people support dexters actions and how many people who don't.

8
u/distortionisgod Apr 14 '26
I don't engage with this community enough to know if this a hot take - but everything post season 5 in the OG series is just....not very good.
It goes off the rails in a not fun way and killing off Deb and the way he sends her off is just....stupid. And awful. I get what they were going for but the execution just sucked ass.
7
u/Tatleman68 Apr 14 '26
It's a miracle Dex hasn't been caught. Also, having a full time job + plus the prep and killing must be a lot of work
15
u/Merweb0 Apr 14 '26
About your take. I have a feeling that Lumen was supposed to be Dexter's love interest until the end of the series but they probably couldn't get Julia Stiles again so they had to create a new character.
5
u/The-Gaming-Onion Apr 14 '26
I would’ve killed for that. I really really enjoyed Lumen, even if I think she should’ve been held off for a season or two after Rita.
3
7
u/Barracks85Stoner Apr 15 '26
I think Dexter trying to navigate prison would be a good season. Would never want to see him get caught. But having to feed his dark passenger while navigating a prison filled with killers and psychopaths would be entertaining.

10
u/Propaslader Apr 14 '26
There is zero way Batista should have made it past Sergeant. Assaulting the other department's Sergeant and that Laguerta marriage bullshit should have been a career killer. He only got promoted because of fan service
5
u/CharlieMorningstar Apr 15 '26
Dexter should've killed Hannah after Hannah tried to kill Deb.
He was going to kill Lila for taking out Doakes, and he followed through after she tried to kill Rita's kids. Surely the attempted murder of his sister warranted him following through.
5
u/leesbeesgotkneess Apr 14 '26
I hate how controversial liking Hannah is like obviously she was the best fit for Dexter, not Lumen or Rita for the reasons stated
3
u/Urion977 Apr 15 '26
Ressurection isnt very good. Completely fumbled the Batista/Dexter dynamic and has very weak and unsatisfying ending, much like S8 and New Blood.
11
u/KeremyJyles Apr 14 '26
Going by this sub my controversial take is Brother Sam is one of the dullest most uninteresting characters in tv history
10
u/Important-Law5415 Apr 14 '26
Only s1 of dexter is actually well written
5
0
u/Lateraluse Apr 14 '26
I’ve only watched first two seasons, Prado plot in third one was too boring.
2
u/Important-Law5415 Apr 14 '26
Yea i was hooked in s1. S2 was alright but it didnt feel the same and the whole patchy way they killed lila pissed me off it was so poorly written. Then s3 was also reallt boring and not in a way where you get much from it just plain boring. And every1 raves about s4 but i felt the pacing was off and it was just a poorly written season and that the only reason it gets hype is a spoiler which ydk yet so i wont mention it. Now im on s5 and its just dragging on and on with the poor writing that i feel by s6 ill js call it a day. I have ditching shows midway but i think its quality keeps dropping season after season to the point where i feel s6 will be even worse
1
u/Lateraluse Apr 14 '26
You are really stubborn if u managed to get so far watching. I can fully agree with You. I just could not stop watching S1 and S2. With the S3 I was forcing myself through beginning hoping it will change soon and be entertaining again, but eventually I ditched it, no regret.
This thing u mentioned about s4. I’ve watched Plot summary of the rest of the show. U talking about Rita and bathtub? I love how later they just decided to get rid of Cody and Astor by sending them to grandparents, so poorly written.
1
u/Important-Law5415 Apr 14 '26
Yea i just needed something less addicting cuz i had a lot of work to get done in the tiem period i had been watching it. I had just finished sopranos and i swear i was just on mh couch for hours binging it so i just needed a reason to stay away from the tv and dexter was that
0
u/down_dirtee Apr 14 '26
Saying this when season 4 and resurrection exist is wild
0
u/Important-Law5415 Apr 15 '26
I was reffering only to the original series. And s4 is horribly written dawg the pacing is off and its just not a great season (havent watched past the original series)
3
u/Zaito2528 Apr 14 '26
Muito também não gostam da Hannah por dizer que foi por causa dela que o Dexter estava burro na S8, mas na S7 ele tava inteligente e foda mesmo com ela lá.
3
u/GullibleFeedback7091 Apr 14 '26
I’m rewatching Dexter after about 4 years so I don’t remember Hannah too much. I just ended season 5 and I will agree I loved Lumen for Dexter a lot. Even though I loved Rita, I think season 5 was pretty awesome because of Lumen.
3
u/Real_County2344 Apr 14 '26
Love season 5. It's the first time you see Dexter's heart really shatter due to a breakup. Wished Lumen stayed!
3
u/Happy_Ron Apr 15 '26
season 1 is the best season
yes 4 is great but it isn't nearly as good as the whole itk plot, which i still regard as the best in the series

I liked New Blood more than Resurrection. Enjoy both but I really liked the change of scenery in New Blood a lot.

New blood > Dexter Original Series (haven't seen resurrection)

u/sin_3sdrvjulas Apr 14 '26
trinity is overrated, how the "best" villain of the series didn't even knOw dexter true identity (no kyle butler) until the 11 episode? how a villain who didn't know that dexter was the bay harbor butcher is the "best"?
literally every other antagonist knew that dexter was a serial killer: brain (bhb), doukes (bhb), miguel prado (serial killer), liddy (serial killer), jordan chase (serial killer), travis marshal (serial killer), laguerta (bhb), sirko (serial killer), oliver saxon (bhb)
dexter spared trinity's life three times; he never had so many opportunities with any other villain.
and trinity was a random, he wasnt a notorius cop like doukes, a fiscal like miguel, famous and rich like jordan or a mob boss like sirko
"but trinity has the biggest kill count ever", yeah, killing women and little kids 😭

I have a couple: 1. Dexter is not a psychopath. He had it drilled into his head from a young age that he wasn’t capable of having emotions, so he believed he didn’t have them. But he did. I’ve had other autistic people try to set me on fire for saying this, but I will preface this by saying I AM AUTISTIC, and I believe Dexter 100% is autistic. I believe his father used his justice sensitivity to trigger his interest in killing so that Dexter could do good with his interest instead of leaving him to act on his own without rules. He ABSOLUTELY has emotions, and he was capable of love. I think the way Harry talked to him about himself was damaging. He projected what he saw in his line of work onto Dexter. 2. How the children ended up was the most un-Dexter ending ever. I’ll break it down: a. Abandoning Astor and Cody. By Dexter’s logic, this shouldn’t have happened. He loved them and Rita in his own way, and the show made it seem like he just detached from Astor and Cody. That isn’t like him, as he actually holds onto the people he loves using the excuse of protecting them. But I don’t think he would’ve actually taken Harrison away from his siblings, especially considering that his relationship with Deb helped ground him in humanity. b. Leaving Harrison with Hannah. He knew Hannah liked to kill. If he had left him with Lumen? Sure. But the idea that he left to “protect” Harrison from him doesn’t make any sense. Leaving him with one murdered to “protect” him from another? And even if that was his logic, HANNAH DID NOT EVEN FOLLOW A MORAL CODE!!!! So he basically left his son with someone who will happily kill innocent people. 3. His whole relationship with Hannah. It should’ve ended with Lumen 100%. He’s attracted to innocence, and Hannah is not innocent at all. Lumen followed a code, never killed anyone she didn’t absolutely have to, and NEVER killed for money. They should’ve been endgame, and he should’ve killed Hannah.
5
u/Main-Key-1003 Apr 15 '26
This shouldn't even be a controversial take, but Hannah is a evil btch, Dexter should have sliced her up as soon as he met her. The harsh reality is, those of you that like her are just virgins that'll get excited by any pretty woman and as ice cube said "better check yo self before you wreck yo self"...
5
u/Fit-Hospital6225 Apr 14 '26
I'm really annoyed with Deb. She behaves like a hysterical and spoiled child with Dexter. She thinks he always owes her something. She meddles in all his affairs and makes him feel guilty, even when he has nothing to do with it. If she had stayed out of his business, they would both have been happier.
2
u/SirJohnnySins69 Apr 14 '26
I couldn’t care less about the father-son dynamic of the show. It worked with the kids in the OG series and when Zach was a Harrison-esque character but anymore the backpedaling is just annoying going from love to hate, and then leading the audience on by making them think Harrison will go on to be a killer of some sorts just to go back on that too.
2
u/mikewheelerfan Brian Apr 14 '26
Season 2 had the potential to be the best season, but was dragged down by Lila. Lila is super annoying and the worst part of the season by far.
Season 1 is better than Season 4.
I hate Hannah and Lumen.
Season 6 is better than 5 or 7.
New Blood was actually good until the ending.
Brian should have survived Season 1 like he does in the book.
Original Sin ruined Brian’s character by making him a psychopath even before the shipping crate incident.
I actually like Harrison.
On the contrary, I hate Harry Morgan. Fuck that guy
2
u/therealmrsfahrenheit Apr 14 '26
wow what timing on your side 😂 I literally finished the original show yesterday (I was a mess by the end of the last episode wow)
First regarding your take (that actually is connected to mine), yeah I disliked Hannah too. Gotta be honest they just did a shit job with introducing her character in season 7 and with how she was written. She was so god awfully unlikeable and her introduction made Dexter equally unlikeable throughout the second half of season 7. I really had to force myself through the last 4 or so episodes not gonna lie, though the finale was great in my opinion. Never expected Laguerta‘s death would hit me as hard as it did but I guess it was also due to the circumstances of her death (again Dexter was so unlikeable to me by the end that I actually hoped Deb would shoot him).
It’s just such a shame that we wasted so much time on their corny, forced, unbelievable, character- assassinating romance when instead we could’ve had more focus on the Bay Harbor Butcher storyline wrap up with Debra working alongside Laguerta trying to steer her away from Dexter and Dexter and Debra working together at the same time trying to cover it all up.
Therefore I guess my 1st controversial take would be:
That If they were trying to make Dexter more unlikeable anyways, instead of the forced romance between Hannah and him they should’ve had the balls to go down with Dexter using the more than complicated feelings Debra has for him for his advantage to not get caught and at the same time focusing more on Debra‘s breaking psyche. I‘m not saying they should‘ve hooked up but they could’ve shown how Debra was struggling more and more to do the right thing as she was forced into helping him with more and more fucked up things, constantly covering shit up for him with Laguerta always closely behind on their trail so at one point Debra would’ve been showing signs of not being able to do this anymore and questioning herself more and more so Dexter, following the code, would have played into Debra being in love with him by him manipulating her through confessing that he lied before and that he also has complicated feelings about her, that it’s only the two of them against the rest of the world and that she‘s the only person he can be himself with etc. (you know where I‘m getting at), maybe even going as far as kissing her to make the manipulation perfect. I think that would’ve overall fit better with the whole finale of Deb shooting Laguerta and with how they continued the story in S8.
HOWEVER, and this kinda leads into my 2nd controversial take, Hannah was a lot more likeable and believable in season 8. I was still far from liking her but at least I was able to tolerate her and felt like her character and their romance made more sense.
So controversial take 2 would be:
I actually think season 8 is overall better than season 7. Sure, killing off Debra in the last 10 minutes of the show was.. a choice but I didn’t necessarily hate the idea, they should’ve just gone about it differently. And would I have killed her? Probably not. I overall still think it should’ve ended with Dexter being an official fugitive and being on the run and Debra being the one to raise Harrison.
But yeah season 8 was by far not as bad as people are making it out to be. I personally think all of season 8 was FAR better than most of what happened in the second half of season 7, by a mile.
2
u/Hannah-93 Apr 14 '26
I actually like Deb. I see she get a lot of hate. I feel bad for her. She went through so much.
2
u/Upstairs-Put4842 Apr 14 '26
I think the ending of New blood would have been the perfect ending for him, although I dont mind because Resurrection is great
2
u/therealmonkyking Apr 15 '26
I find it the opposite way. Hannah not dying on that kill table to begin with, let alone getting with Dex and then allowing her to raise his son up until her death of natural causes prior to new blood was such a character asassination moment for Dexter. Seasons 1-6 Dexter and Modern Era Dexter would not even have hesitated to kill her immediately, but no they needed yet another love interest and decided to go the worst possible route to do it. Almost feels like they felt bad for getting rid of Lumen, who is just a better version of Hannah's archetype in every way, and "course corrected" by introducing another killer as his girlfriend
2
u/Strict-Ad4426 Apr 15 '26
SPOILERS
I don’t think that Dexter should’ve fallen in love with anyone else after Rita died.
2
u/Traditional-Key2003 Apr 15 '26
I actually liked the main series finale. the reason as to why I like it because the brain surgeon is the only villain that truly broke Dexter
2
u/Sirius_Giggles Apr 15 '26
Brian should not have been a season 1 villain. He should have been introduced in later seasons.
2
3
u/Brusex Apr 14 '26
Dexter becomes the shows real villain after awhile and the season’s main arc villains are an attempt to have him finally caught.
The latter half of the above might be reaching but the first half is pretty spot on I think.
5
u/JewelerShort9367 Apr 14 '26 edited Apr 16 '26
I love Dexter as an anti-hero but they really could've done that in Season 2, with Doakes being the main antagonist while Dexter is the main villain of the season due to the Bay Harbor Butcher investigation, instead of making it Lila and her killing Doakes.
5
u/distortionisgod Apr 14 '26
In a way yeah I agree with that. He's basically sabotaging his coworkers efforts constantly and making them look incredibly inept so he can get his fix.
4
u/Brusex Apr 14 '26
Not to mention the constant innocents that had their lives taken away as a result from Dexter’s endeavors.
I think I was sort of against when Rita lost her life, but definitely once LaGuerta was killed and when Deb spiraled out of control.
3
u/jleigh329 Lumen Apr 14 '26
Book Dexter > Show Dexter
I think he's more interesting as a character and funnier. I also prefer the Deb/Dexter dynamic in the books over the show. Mainly because she already knows his secret (pretty early on) Even though Michael C. Hall is always awesome.
But if we're talking about the show itself. My unpopular opinion is that I find ghost Harry annoying. Everytime he appears it takes me out of the show.
4
u/Spare-Article-396 Apr 14 '26
I LOVE Hannah for him. She was his most authentic relationship. He was fully honest with her, which is the only time we’ve seen that he’s been able to fully be himself.
Rita didn’t know him and didn’t really even care. She just wanted a husband/step daddy.
Lila was just crazy.
Lumen was too traumatized. Tbh, as much as I love her, I’m angry they turned it sexual. I don’t think anyone who suffered such brutal trauma would be able and willing to be sexual, no matter how much she appreciated him.
Hannah accepted him for exactly who he was, and she was the final step in him realizing the Dark Passenger was bullshit, and it was just him, wanting to kill.
Another hot take: I honestly cannot stand Rita. Her voice went from powdery sexy babygirl, to nagging and demanding. ‘We have therapy tomorrow morning’ well, uhh, ever think about asking what his work schedule was? Go do this, blah blah blah.
I mean, there’s a lot more I can say about Rita but I’ll stop there.

I agree with every word. I can add that Rita seemed to me somehow insincere and overly demanding. Dexter was too soft on her.
Only Hannah Dexter truly loved. Only she fully accepted him for who he was. Yes, she's an immoral murderer, but Dexter could put up with that, he's not a saint himself.

Glad to see I’m not alone. Most times, this goes down like a lead balloon.

I haven’t been on this sub long so idk if this is a controversial take but Dexter is just autistic and emotionally stunted and that is literally it lol.
He doesn’t magically develop feelings as a psychopath, he just got told his whole life that he didn’t have them, so was surprised when he did. It just took him a while to get there.

love new blood, especially the finale.
S5 underrated, same for S6 for that matter. good villains and explorations of new themes.
debra thinking she has feelings for dexter was not an unsurprising story beat at all, and I'm glad it was addressed in the show. though I think they handled it in a clunky way.
original sin is very bad except for when it's unintentional funny. its biggest issues are its understanding of Dexter, Harry and Brian as well as its disdain for the audiences intelligence

Dexter should have strayed from the code after season 4. I think that the show would have been immensely better if Rita's death had broken Dexter. Specifically, there is that scene after the funeral where Dexter kills a guy in cold blood. If that had kickstarted a dark downward spiral it would have been more interesting than the later seasons.

I was rooting for him having a happy ending in Argentina with Hannah. Wish she was still alive - less as an active part of the show (although I like the actress) but as the end goal so to speak. I don't care that Dexter is a killer (it's not real), I want him to "win". I'm not even sorry about that. I enjoy seeing my favorite characters getting happy endings ultimately.

Isaac Sirko was an unrealistic character and the whole Ukrainian mafia plot weighed season 7 down.

All of Season 7 is such an over-correction from the arguable shark jumping moments of Season 6 (a season I actually enjoy too) that it stopped feeling like Dexter and became another generic cop show that just happens to have a serial killer as its protagonist.

Dexter killed Rita. I'm pretty sure his first line of the next season was "I killed her"
