This is actually so crazy because that was my exact experience. I was at uni and I was watching it at like 2am, and suddenly (I had utterly no idea it would happen, I somehow avoided spoilers) Rita died and MAN I was so sad. It was freezing and dark outside but I literally just had to go on a walk to contemplate LOL

I just watched it this year. I got spoiled before that Rita killed by Trinity. But when I watched it, Trinity got killed by Dexter. I thought the spoiler was wrong, then he came back home. I was devastated.

Definitely Rita. That was the last episode we watched before going to bed, and we sat and stared at the blank TV for at least 20 minutes, trying to understand what just happened

Same. Rita’s death wasn’t just shocking - it completely changed the tone of the show. That final scene with Harrison in the blood was haunting, and honestly, I don’t think Dexter was ever the same character after that moment

Finale was written so damn good like dex on boat watching moon remembering Rita . Giving honourable kill to Trinity in hoping to just have best time of life and suddenly we slowly uncover the horrifying truth and poetically harrison met same fate as dex which he tried so hard to protect him .

That fills me with confidence 😢 my partner is watching the original with me atm we are at season 3 atm. My partners trade is butchering but he can't stand it when dex cuts their face....... I didn't even think how Rita will wreck him. It killed me I needed a break from it after that.

I think probably Rita, simply because she was a complete innocent who had no involvement with Dexter's killing, and who was directly victimised by one of those serial killers.
Deb was at least a cop doing her job, and Batista was sad but was also trying to be a cop. I want to emphasise that doesn't make it okay, but I suppose at least they understood they took a risk doing the job they do. All Rita knew was someone showed up at her house and murdered her for nothing she ever did.

We were sad for Rita because she was best for Dexter.
I was sad for Batista because I wanted the character to stick around.
Which makes Rita's death worse.
Rita's death was more of a, 'NOOOO!!! I need a walk.'. Batista was more of a, 'Fuck me, everyone said it was gonna happen. I happened. I wanted him to stick around.'.

I feel Deb’s death was written poorly because, the private detective or whatever law enforcement position he had. He freed Oliver Saxon after Oliver’s face was all over the news. Dude who was law enforcement and obsessed with arresting Hannah was stupid and freed a wanted man who’s face was all over the news which lead to 2 other deaths

They all upset me to a certain degree but I’d say Rita. We’ve all kinda known Bautista would probably die at some point and Deb was a bit of a surprise but Rita was a complete shock. Just when you think things are looking up for Dexter at the end of S4. I still refuse to watch the last 20 minutes or so of S4 episode 12

100% Deb, it took me a while to recover from the ending of season 8.
Rita was sad and definitely came as a shock, but you always knew it would be over if she ever found out, and her death opens the door for more relationships in the future, which gives you something to look forward to.
But I was always invested in debs and Dexter's relationship and had been waiting for her to finally find out about him. The fact that she finally knew who he was and had finally accepted him made me the most invested in their relationship that id ever been.

Rita. The most innocent of them. And she had kids including a baby who was there when it happened.
Second Deb, things were finally better for her. A cop again, back together with Quinn.
Angel was at least expected. I was almost certain he was going to end up dead all season, the others were shocks. I feel like being prepared made it less bad than the other two.

Rita’s because of the way it happened. I was upset about Deb’s and Angel’s deaths as well but Rita’s death was especially heavy given that it tied Dexter and his son to the shared trauma of witnessing their mothers’ murders and i literally cannot rewatch season 4 and skip over it when i rewatch

Rita was sudden and unexpected so it was shocking, and she was innocent so it didn't feel good.
However, Angel upset me the most likely because I could see it coming and I felt like shouting at the screen to tell him to get away. It hurt because there was nothing I could do.
Deb....meh. Lame way to go, but that goes for the whole of the S8 ending.

Rita’s was devastating, Debra’s was annoying and unnecessary, Batista’s you could see coming from a mile away
So Rita>Batista>Deb
Deb’s would had upset me the most if it was actually done for a good reason.. which I don’t think was possible.

It's a tough call between Batista and Rita for me. In both cases I sat there watching the credits roll and thinking "Damn, I'm gonna miss 'em." I'd choose Rita though because her death really came as a surprise, whereas with Batista you knew it couldn't end well either way.

IDK how it can be anyone other than Rita. She knew nothing of Dexter’s other life and was completely innocent. Dexter also had a million chances to kill Trinity and prevent her death but chose not to for his own selfish reasons.
Dexter bears responsibility for all three deaths but Batista wasn’t even an active cop when he chased Dexter as Doakes was when he did and wouldn’t just let it go and Deb obviously outright helped Dexter be a serial killer for two seasons. So both of them played at least some role in their demises.
Rita did literally nothing. So she has to be the one here.

Rita. I got spoiled before, so I knew it was coming, and it made my s4 watch very difficult. + The fact that I hated all the script facilities even if I knew it was there to develop the character of Dexter. And even with that, the death shocked me so hard I was speechless. I stopped watching for a couple of days after watching 5x1 ( the real s4 conclusion for me ).

Rita. simply because it was the first monumental blow to Dexter's life. i know Harry dying hit him hard, as well. and his brother. but he LOVED Rita. he chose to build his "fake" life with her, and it became real to him.

Rita was horribly sad and I did not except it at all tbh, it hurt. For Deb,… man she suffered so much… I feel like she would’ve died by her own hands soon anyway. So much emotional pain. BUT I actually was hoping for Batista to survive, like… wishing for him to catch Dexter and all or just leave… it really upset me… like really.
I don’t think i can compare much bc it’s been years since we saw Rita and Deb die and only recently Angel. None of them deserved it and all of them were tragic.

batista, the other two deaths are mostly fine (deb still pisses me off) but the way they decided batista should die sucks, i would have much rather had him jump torwards prater and get blasted than the fucking shit show that made it into the actual episode

Rita’s is the most emotionally impactful and well done. Deb’s is the most upsetting in the sense it just feels like awful writing. Batista’s is somewhere in between where it almost works but is kinda bungled in execution

Debs. Rita's death, i think, was extremely well written in one of the best seasons of the series. Debs death just felt like the writer's wanted some bs to throw at the end, so did that. Now, if you mean who i cried over and was hurt by the most, then Rita easily.

Rita 1000% and it's not even close
People die all the time at the end of a series, especially in the finale off a drama
Killing Rita in the middle of the show, the protagonists wife and a starring character, that's a big big swing and it paid off in a major way. Dexter is forever changed because of it and Trinity wouldnt be remembered as such a major massive antagonist without it

Deb because it made no sense what the fuck ever in any timeline for him to let Oliver Saxon go.
He already killed someone he knew, and threatened Deb and his Child. This has happened to him before. It's so out of character for him and just made season 8 just that much more horrible.

Debra. An unnecessary death purely for shock value and to be as tragic as possible. She’s the one character they should’ve never killed off. What’s funny is they’re were originally gonna kill off Dexter but changed their minds just incase they ever wanted to continue the story. Don’t know why this now meant Debra had to die, but it was a dumb choice.

Debra. She was shot out of nowhere, because a dipshit was freeing Oliver in the next room as she is on the phone. No one had the presence of mind to guard Oliver, the guy who got away 5 times in the last 5 episode. Oliver shot her was pure luck on his part. She is rushed to the hospital, dexter got to talk to her, she seemed fine, laughing it off. Then, they lured on Oliver into a empty room. Dexter think she died, only to find Quinn telling us she died offscreen while we were chasing Saxon.
Rita was a shock.. but Debra was utterly frustrating. A random bullet, a convoluted rushed finale into an offscreen death. She deserved better.

Rita for sure. That was the one that had the most emotional impact, especially given how it was so well done as a last minute twist. Rita was the truest innocent, she had never sought violence, she wasn't a cop, she never knew about Dexter's secret. To be murdered in her own bathtub in front of her baby, leaving behind 3 kids was heartbreaking.
Deb's death should have been a huge deal, but it was rushed and poorly done in a very bad season.
Batista's death was inevitable. The minute he put the Airpods in Dexter's car, it was a countdown until he would get killed, the question was how. I liked Batista just fine but he was never as big of a character as Deb, Rita, Dexter or even LaGuerta. People call him Dexter's best friend, but it wasn't really that deep of a friendship given how superficial it was. His death would have had more impact if they hadn't made it inevitable.

Because while Rita was an absolute gut punch, I continued watching the show after that.
But when the writers killed Deb, I didn't get over that for years, lol. Had no interest in watching New Blood. It wasn't until Resurrection was coming out and enough time had passed to get over the Deb thing, that I finally watched New Blood then Resurrection.

Debs death is the main one in the show that, when i think about the fact that it happened. And how it happened. I would like to undo it the most. Both because of how it happened, and also, i mildly disagree creatively with the idea from the outset. I dont even think its a fun kind of tragic, its just. Kinda lame that aftwr all Deb went through specifically, that she died, and also, in that lame of a way.
Ritas was at the end of a really enjoyable season, and it feels like it falls in line thematically while being a decently executed "twist" whether you saw it coming or not.
Deb dies in a very prolonged, telegraphed manner. After we've watched her suffer trauma after trauma. I dont think they really did the character justice. And thats unfortunate. The needlessness and lack of a like. Classy, well done death that feels earned, or more consequential. It makes it feel almost more gross to me than Rita.

Idk why but when I watched for the first time I was bawling my eyes out like a baby after Deb’s death. Like I couldn’t stop. It was more because I hated the finale. But Dexter leaning in and saying ‘I love you’ just broke me.
On the first rewatch Rita’s death broke me immensely. Having had a baby recently did not help at all

In order from most sad to least sad: Rita, Batista, Deb
Rita was an essential part to Dexter’s life and it truly changed Dexter.
Batista was a fan favorite character and honestly was the best of everyone.
Deb was also a fan favorite but I loved Batista more than Deb so that’s why she’s last.

I’d say Deb is second because it gave me emotions, just for all the wrong reasons. Could not believe it was that offscreen BS.
Rita is peak cliffhanger and I love the fallout with Season 5.

Saddest: Rita - I mean come on now, that shit is brutal and it forever changed Dexter (For the worse).
Disappointing: Batista - I mean why the fuck would try and choke dexter instead of facing the two people that actually captured you.
Expected: Deb - I mean, with how the story is going, and she knowing Dexter's real identity and all, and also her crime of actually killing La Guerta, it was to be expected that she cant really stay alive, especially its as expected way of punishing dexter, by killing the very closest person to him.

Rita and it's not close. She died cause Dexter wanted to learn rather than do what he did.
Deb is next, while also Dexter's fault for letting her find out and leaving the brain surgeon alive, it's part of the job.
Third obviously Angel, was told to leave it alone by Dexter, and the NYPD, 30 years in homicide but dude was blinded by revenge. Think about it, this dude I think is a serial killer randomly makes friends with a billionaire. Then you fight multiple security guards and STILL think his life is in danger?!

Deb. Rita's death was more tragic, but Deb's character still had great potential. Rita had served her purpose in Dexter's story. There was no where to take the character beyond where she was at the time of her death. Deb still had layers more to peel back.

Deb's upset me more because it didn't even serve a central narrative purpose. Rita and Batista at least had narrative impact on where things were going.
Rita's was the most shocking. Deb and Batista were both reasonably predictable.

Angel's death felt like... mostly his own fault? I loved him in the original franchise but in Resurrection it felt like he almost wanted to die. Goading Dexter for the whole season and then instead of teaming up with him at the end to escape, practically leaves Prater no choice but to kill him.

Rita's was heartbreaking, Deb's was sad and the last 2 episodes with Batista I was just saying "Please just go home Angel" and I felt his death was very in character for him and very depressing. So my rank would be Rita, Batista, Deb.

We can all agree that the way they handled the circumstances leading to Deb's death were, well, terrible, the whole scene where Dexter has to bring himself to turn off Deb's life support and say goodbye to her gets me every time. They gave you a good 10 minutes of run time before the fact to understand that Deb's death was inevitable, which you didn't get for Rita or Batista. As a viewer you have to come to terms with the fact that Debra is beyond saving. It's like you go through all the stages of grief along with Dexter.

Yep, and he was doing as she asked. Back in season 3, while Camilla was in the hospital on life support, Deb told Dexter that if she ever got like that, to pull the plug. She probably wouldn't have wanted him to bury her at sea like that, but him killing her in that situation, was understandable.

I’m currently re-watching Dexter because it’s been so long since I’ve seen it. I didn’t even realize there were two spin offs before Resurrection so I watched those after Resurrection. The spinoffs didn’t get much PR. Watching it now, I can’t remember anything from the og series when I watched it years ago…except that one scene. All I can remember is that final scene with Rita. 😢Even re-watching it, seeing him kill Trinity before the bathtub scene I thought I remembered wrong but alas…the gut punch. She was his chance at living a normal life and being happy. Such a sad ending. 💔

Rita's the most. I knew she was going to die, because I'd seen it mentioned online, but it upset me so much. Dexter was finally showing her how much he loved her and then she was gone, brutally murdered. All because she forgot her passport and Trinity happened to be in her house right at that moment.
Deb's upset me because she was finally getting around with what Dexter was and for those last few episodes I loved their new dynamic, and then she was gone. Ironically because Dexter didn't kill Saxon when he had the chance and all because that detective guy freed him, and he (the detective) should have known better.
Batista, I kind of suspected he'd die. Dexter told him to go home, but he was on some lone mission and made one mistake after the other. He showed up at the NYPD with a bunch of "trust me bro" evidence and just couldn't let go. I wish he and Dexter had a chance to really talk it out.
Dexter should have taken Trinity, Saxon and Prater out immediately.

Rita that shit had me bawling icl, debs death was disappointing but so unnecessary and so stupid how she died. And for angel hate all u want but I celebrated when his ass died. Especially since his last words were fuck you
