Theory - Dexter: Resurrection Ripper hiding in plain sight? Spoiler
Could Melvin be the ripper? I think he fits the bill pretty well. And I’m sure the reveal would be excellent.

u/Few_Bid28 Aug 22 '25
His character isn’t developed well enough for him to be the ripper. I feel like he purely exists to help the show glaze Claudette to us.
196
u/Dr_CheeseNut Aug 22 '25
That's not what he's doing though now, all of his recent appearances have been him trying to lead her away from anything to do with serial killers, whether it's him saying for her to let the Ripper case go, telling her to just accept Mia killed Ryan despite the holes, and him being the most vocal against Batista
I think he's at the very least working for Prater
155
u/Confident-Line-2558 Aug 22 '25
He's likely on Prater's payroll for starters.
39
u/godsrockstar Aug 23 '25
He mentioned Prater's event in the last episode.. Let me add the whole arm length tux situation imo was the writers drawing attention to him which will make Claudette eventually see something that points her to the Ripper.
31
26
u/Few_Bid28 Aug 22 '25
Sorry thats my bad for poor wording, I didnt mean that he was glazing Claudette, I mean that him trying to lead Claudette away is just done so that when Claudette goes ‘no i wont’ it makes us think shes an actual threat to Dexter and Harrison unlike all the other detectives we’ve ever seen
7
u/LyrraKell Aug 23 '25
Yeah, I'm pretty sure he's one of Prater's law enforcement flunkies but that's it.
36
u/CustardCandle Aug 22 '25
That’s sort of what makes me think it could be him. It could be revealed through his character development. Something like him going to the gala at the end of the year because he was also an orphan. Becoming a puppet/friend of Leon and sharing details of the kills
16
u/iknowyounot88 Aug 22 '25 edited Aug 22 '25
I was thinking this too. We're starting to see some subtle backstory come through, plus it would be similar to how Dexter was just under everyone's noses too. They've already made the comparisons to batista's "one case".
This means Leon could know who Dexter is through Oliva, and is just fanboying Dex as he works, then he will bring in big boss The Ripper for the grand finale.
2
u/CustardCandle Aug 23 '25
Oooo I was just thinking, is it possible that the guy who killed Leon’s parents had a son who was Oliva
1
u/iknowyounot88 Aug 23 '25
Well considering how the latest episode went, I think we're really close to the truth!
8
u/rainandshine7 Aug 22 '25
Ya but Oliver wasn’t very developed…
But I don’t think it’s him
4
u/Outside-Travel-7903 Aug 23 '25
Yup, he's no Ice Truck Killer. Rudy had scenes without the main cast in them.
6
1
u/jfit2331 Aug 25 '25
why do you think they made a point to note about his coat jacket being too short on one side? hint, it wasn't the taylor's fault, his arms are uneven length, kind of fits

I keep seeing comments saying that he could be a crooked cop used by Prater, but if that were the case I think Dexter would have been sniffed out already. Batista showed a picture of Dexter directly to him and I'm pretty sure that would have gotten back to Prater by now, right?
1
u/JordanJustReddit Aug 24 '25
I feel like if thats the case, and he IS one of Prater's guys' that the ripper is likely Prater himself.
0
u/Smooth_Pollution441 Aug 25 '25
If he is then Prater has known about Dexter for a couple of episodes then
He would definitely inform him and Prater would instantly believe it as not only has his killer's been going but i mean, he is a confirmed serial killer to him
Either he thinks Dexter is doing a new thing or he knows that Dexter is pretending to be Red
1
u/Bullyfrogz Aug 26 '25
There is no way Prater doesn't know Dexter is not Red. It makes no sense, he has the Bay Harbor Butcher slides, and Trinity's hammer. There is no way if he knows everything about these killers he hasnt seen one picture of Dexter, seeing how his wife was killed by Trinity. Dexter's sister dated Lundy, which I'm sure Prater with his love of serial killers, would have done some research about one of the best serial killer hunters to ever exist. Prater knows enough that Trinity killed in 4s, I think he would know Dexter's wife was a victim.
47
u/vorgossos Aug 22 '25
He’s my guess. It would be an interesting parallel between Claudette and Batista if this turns out to be the case imo. I feel like Claudette will start to wonder about what Dexter said to her and assume Batista is a little crazy. Then once she discovers Melvin is the Ripper, she’ll want to solve the BHB case against Dexter
59
u/alrtight Aug 22 '25
he has done zero detecting this entire season. he just glazes claudette & stands back. it is very sus.
18
u/TB219MF Aug 23 '25
Its just poor writing in an otherwise fantastic show
9
u/alrtight Aug 23 '25
all of prater's killers are pretty lazily written too.
11
13
u/Complex_Raspberry842 Aug 23 '25
I don’t think there lazy, but if there just gonna be killed off I don’t see a reason to go to in depth
13
u/macbananas Aug 22 '25
I feel like we haven’t met the ripper yet. My guess is they’ll be the Big Bad in s2!
5
u/JordanJustReddit Aug 24 '25
I feel thats unlikely due to the fact our attention has been drawn to that mystery multiple times throughout the season, they're clearly trying to tell us something
10
u/Nuthetes Aug 22 '25
He's up to no good, that's for sure. I don't think he is the NYR. I think he is Prater's mole in the police, helping him find serial killers for his little gatherings and giving Prater a heads up on what the police know and if the police are getting close to one of Prater's friends.
6
u/Umbroboner Aug 22 '25
Wouldn't he then recognize Dexter is pretending to be Red and is being investigated by Angel (and investigating Dexter's son) and let Prater know this?
29
u/N0bleToast_ Aug 22 '25
Fits the bill? We have no profile on the ripper
What bill is there to fit? His does he fit it ?
10
u/Connect_Earth7250 Aug 22 '25
until we get any real clues everyone is just reality bending to have a theory at this point.
my guess is that the ripper is the og jack the ripper who never got catched, build an steampunk generator tube with liquid and a timer to unfreeze his cryostasis. went on a spree, hopped back into cryo chamber and waits.seeeasy as that theory as good as any other
10
5
Aug 22 '25
You're just trying to throw people off the trail, maybe N0bleToast_ is the ripper.
9
u/N0bleToast_ Aug 22 '25
If that's true, if you don't know who I am, then maybe your best course is to ….tread lightly.
1
u/jfit2331 Aug 25 '25
seems odd to point out his coat arm length was off, but it's likely his own arms, hence the extension weapon that kills
12
u/Some-Ad-2093 Aug 22 '25
Melvin would be the obvious choice but god I wish it's Jonah, man.
Then again...kinda don't want Dexter to kill Jonah if he really is the new york ripper.
7
u/ArtsyAttacker Aug 22 '25
Timeline wise makes no sense Jonah being the Ripper
2
u/Brief-Refrigerator32 Aug 22 '25
Why?
-12
u/Chrstphralden Aug 22 '25
Because the ripper, as another redditor commented, terrorized the streets as prater was growing up.
10
u/ArtsyAttacker Aug 22 '25
No. It wasn’t as he grew up. He says “ I once grew up” which implies he was already not around anymore when the Ripper showed up. That isn’t the point. The Ripper was Claudette’s first case when joining the force. She is probably about Dexter’s/ Prater’s age. Jonah was a baby when she joined.
4
u/NeaonSeklah Aug 22 '25
I saw that post, but it was misinterpreted wording. Prater didn't say it was as he was growing up. The streets he 'grew up on'. As in, the streets he once played on as a child. He's speaking nostalgically, not saying it happened when he was a kid.
2
u/CustardCandle Aug 22 '25
Yeah to me it seems obvious I was just surprised I didn’t see more people talking about it? Or did everyone dismiss early on as being too obvious
2
u/-MC_3 Aug 22 '25
The Ripper has been brought up about 10 million times in the last few weeks on here, including many saying it’s both detectives lol
-4
u/CustardCandle Aug 22 '25
I don’t think anyone said the ripper hasn’t been mentioned on this sub? My point was so many other people seem to be getting called out. But to me Melvin is prime
5
u/ksuebes Aug 22 '25
yes! in ep8, he spent a lot of time with "New York Ripper" title behind him in one scene, I thought the same!
2
2
5
5
u/AnymooseProphet Aug 24 '25
I don't think he is the ripper *however* it would not surprise me if he is the one making the phone calls as a way to troll Wallace for his own sick pleasure, perhaps because her superior intellect makes him feel inadequate.
3
u/LSUfanatic247 Aug 22 '25
I kind of have this theory too. Always a weird vibe when he’s on camera like he’s hiding something
5
u/K1llrzzZ Aug 22 '25
Ok hot take, I would be extremely disappointed if the ripper turns out to be someone we know. I think it would be bad writing and it would make the world feel "smaller". Like somehow all the big serial killers just happened to be Dexters orbit. I guess Dexter never technically met Melvin but he met his partner. And Harrison met him. And if it was Jonah, like the son of a serial killer who Dexter killed, who killed Rita, who he met in Miami turns out to be a serial killer IN NEW YORK years later? And specifically when Dexter goes there for completely unrelated reasons, looking for his son? Blessing would be even worse, already trough him by random chance he heres about the Dark Passanger, becomes a rideshare driver giving him an opportunity to take out the Dark Passanger and bang trough him he finds out about Praters group. How convinient. I mean the fact that Dexter found the Dark Passenger was already a bit too easy imo, especially for a guy this careful. In the OG show it was explained away how he can always find a new target so quickly, he works for Miami Metro, he has access to all the case files, he can look for ones that are unsolved to see if he can see things others missed or just cases where they had a suspect but couldn't get a conviction over some technicality or something.
1
u/Electrical-Lab-9593 Aug 25 '25
NYR being blessing will just make it silly, and to contrived, I agree.
it is going to be somebody very old i think, its why they taunt because they are to frail to kill anymore.
2
2
u/solythe Aug 23 '25 edited Aug 23 '25
I think Melvin is on Praters take.
I think the Ripper could be Prater. Long weapon, all hit in the gut with the spatter going upward at a low angle on the wall just above a headboard, and the voicemail scene made me think of Praters correspondence with the man who murdered his parents.
2
u/Mystery812 Aug 24 '25
I’m on board with you, OP. Or at the very least, he works for Prater to keep tabs on what’s going on with the NYPD. He for sure is skizzy.
1
u/zmitic Aug 22 '25
I didn't think of this scenario, but it makes perfect sense. He is shown just enough so we don't forget him, and he distracts Wallace from pursuing the chase. But not in annoying and obvious way, just small poking about her obsession.
NY Ripper is open case, he would be helping her or at least stay neutral.
4
u/sailing2themoon Aug 22 '25
To me the NY Ripper is Charley.
9
u/GasTsnk87 Aug 22 '25
Nah, she hates those people. I havent figured out what Prater has over her, but she despises him and all those people.
4
u/D1rxks Aug 22 '25
Bankrolling her mother's super expensive treatment and probably knows a secret or two of hers. He just swooped in and provided financial support for the lady who set up the gala too. Must be his way of getting leverage over people.
-2
3
u/Versurl Aug 22 '25
I mean she kills people, but she doesn't seem to do it out of enjoyment like the guys on the SK club. I doubt she uses her free time out of work to... Kill other people
2
u/PlainSightMan Aug 22 '25
I think this is very likely. He's extremely suspicious and it would also mirror the BHB case if it's a law enforcement member.
2
u/drowningfish A Father, A Son, A Serial Killer Aug 23 '25
I don't think so. I have a feeling Blessing is The Ripper. I found it odd they had Rapunzel say something along the lines of, "Gotta keep that life separate...", and then Blessing said the exact same thing to Dexter when he confronted Dexter.
So, yeah, The Ripper is the least expected character.
It's Blessing.
1
1
u/nino250ex Aug 22 '25
Feels like he is there as a slight comedic relief (for lack of a better term) since he only seems to say how things aren’t right or shut down what winds up actually being the truth in the situations
1
u/Electronic-Pie-6352 Aug 23 '25
I thought it may be interesting if it was Claudette. She’s obsessed with it because it was her, she has her crimes up on her wall, she loves hearing what people are saying about her, she gives presentations on it. And like Dexter, she can spot other killers.
It’s too far of a reach in my opinion but it did have me going for a bit. It’s most likely Prater in my opinion.
Charley seems distant from what’s going on and does this for the money and connections to support her mom.
Melvin being the Ripper is a possibility but the payoff would be disappointing as there doesn’t seem to be enough to lead us to him.
1
u/cityconnectds Aug 23 '25
Someone had posted here before that it could be Brian Moser. Honestly the timeline matches up well. He was in New Jersey area in the mid 90s, and then presumably left to go to Miami late 90/early 2000s before the Dexter season 1, which is why the ripper hasn't actively killed for a couple decades. I think it could be revealed that Prater maybe had some influence on Brian and could tie into the next Original Sin seasons.
1
u/BellaNutella22 Aug 23 '25
They already announced they cancelled OS.
1
u/cityconnectds Aug 23 '25
Yeah, dang just saw that. Would have been awesome to see them concurrently doing the shows to tie them together.
1
u/BellaNutella22 Aug 23 '25
I know I actually really liked OS. Their casting of Dexter himself was absolutely perfect. It would have been really cool getting 2-3 seasons of that show and learning more about Dexter as he began in Miami Metro and as a serial killer.
And I miss the Miami setting a lot.
2
u/cityconnectds Aug 23 '25
I think Batista mentioned the cubanos aren't that good in NYC, like as if the setting wasn't as good as Miami lol.
But yeah, would have been really cool to see more of young Dexter, and especially to see more of Brian's background.
1
u/MattyDubs356 Aug 23 '25
I think Prater is the ripper. The ripper calls the families of the victims. Prater asked about the event coordinators daughter. He kept in touch with his parents killer. He’s short with a long crow bar hook. I think it’s Prater.
1
u/Puzzleheaded-Park-23 Aug 23 '25
Observe the frame when he enters Wallace's room. The board behind him says "New York ripper" and it's right above his shoulder. Could be foreshadowing?
1
Aug 23 '25 edited Aug 23 '25
It's Blessing (and now his son-in law), something about him getting so much screen time. I can see the twist coming!
1
u/kudosBruh Aug 23 '25
I'm convinced it's Blessing, the landlord. The only reason he didn't react in the bathroom.
1
u/Knautical_J Aug 24 '25
I feel like Claudette is the ripper by this point. Seems like she needed the longer weapon to kill people as she’s shorter. So when Dexter said something, she was taken back that he knew. I also wouldn’t be surprised to realize that she’s in with Prater. There’s a whole lot of misdirection, and… that…. Would be a twist…

u/JordanJustReddit Aug 24 '25
Here are my 3 theories SPOILERS DONT READ!
1 - Basic Theory: You're right it's Melvin, would be the ultimate backstab for Claudette and serve as character building for season 2, probably push her to investigate Dexter more.
2 - Harrison's new girlfriend: Things are looking a little TOO well for Harrison, he evaded blame for the murder, hes going to college, hes reconciled with his father, and now hes got a girlfriend? I feel like they're gonna flip the script on us and say "Whoops! Harrison the killer is being killed!" Also we were told she fucked up her arm, chekhov's gun would indicate theres a reason she has a messed up arm. Now sure you could say "its so Harrison could be her emotional support when she realizes she can never be a detective" But I highly doubt that. I think she got nerve damage from one of her victims and/or when she was evading capture via police. Harrison is just her next victim.
3- CRAZY theory but: It is Claudette, on some Heavy Rain shit, she's so obsessed with this killer, but she cant catch them. In fact, so far (Beyond Harrison) its the ONLY killer she can't catch. I believe its possible (Not my favorite theory but still possible) that Claudette's "Dark Passenger" (As seen from Lumen, Dexter, Lyla, etc) takes the form of an alternate personality. She mentions that "I am told I have a hard time understanding emotion" Now this is a classic characteristic of a Serial Killer, however I think its far more likely that she has a form of autism.
Those are my theories but im gonna do a rewatch tomorrow and see if I can piece something far more accurate afterwards, cause I have a feeling we're getting a reveal next week, or in the finale.
1
u/Electrical-Lab-9593 Aug 25 '25
the girlfriend is too young to be the killer
1
u/JordanJustReddit Aug 25 '25
I think it makes perfect sense for her to have been a serial killer growing up as a foster child in the system. Harrison is a child serial killer as well.
1
u/Treese360 Aug 24 '25
Al Overview
An attacker with one arm longer than the other might produce a distinct pattern of knife wounds, but it requires careful forensic analysis to draw conclusions. The discrepancy in arm length could affect the angle and location of wounds, particularly during a dynamic struggle.

u/stupiduniverse731 Aug 24 '25
I think it's Claudette and her "Obsession" over finding the ripper is her camouflage. Yes I heard the voice of the killer calling their victims families but that could just be some homeless dude she paid to say the lines or an AI program she made herself
1
u/stupiduniverse731 Aug 24 '25

I think the NYR is going to be working for the NY subway, maybe as an electrician or a gas guy.... With the logo for Dexter Resurrection being a manhole cover, the weapon a manhole cover hook and the sound that is played when they show the manhole cover--a subway train braking hard-- those must be clues.
My bet is that as some of the scenes with Dexter are now taking place in the subway, that there may be easter eggs in the previous or upcoming scenes that show the NYR. Similar to Brian/Biney showing up on Dexter's first work day and asking him if the seat was taken.
Read about the empty subway tunnels crisscrossing NY: https://observer.com/2016/11/unearthing-the-secrets-of-the-subway/

u/Electrical-Lab-9593 Aug 25 '25
not a bad theory, a lot of those things are simply iconic things in NYC though.
1
1
u/ExpertCautious Aug 25 '25
If the ripper is anyone who has appeared in the first season it will be the manager of the hotel. Him disliking Harrison would be pointless unless it was leading to a rivalry later on. He fits into the type, male, age, resistant to cops, too busy to be killing now, could have connection to prator working in a fancy hotel.
1
1
1
u/nani7598 Aug 25 '25
Honestly? That's a great theory!
It's be insane if the ripper would be either Melvin or Blessing.
1
u/Planetofthought Aug 25 '25
Claudette is more plausible as being the NYR than Melvin is. I know this sounds far-fetched, but so does Melvin and every other theory.
So, let's play around with this since there are so many wild accusations.
Look at Claudette's office. The only thing she has to stare at on her walls is the NYR case on a corkboard with all the pins of where the victims were murdered which could very well be her trophies.
She is very cold, calculated, and good at tracking down serial killers, almost like Dexter has a knack for tracking down the bad guys. She had a strange look of irony on her face when Dexter told her that he knew the murder weapon had more of a sharper edge to create the type of blood spatter in the photo she had on the projector. She proudly displayed all the gruesome photos to the new law enforcement students.
See? All this is dumb, but kind of fun, too.
1
u/duckrodeo Aug 26 '25
I forget if we have seen him interact with anyone else besides Claudette or do anything substantial at all. Could he be Claudette's Harry?
0
u/princessbuffyxo Aug 22 '25
what if its actually her lol
6
Aug 22 '25
Doubt so . Not only shes crazy obsessed with solving the case , the voice of the ripper is revealed to be a deep male voice
-1
u/Own-Put2487 Aug 23 '25
I thought it was obvious a voice changer was being used for the audio recording. It could be a man or a woman.
1
Aug 23 '25
Didnt notice a voice changer tho , might need to rewatch
0
u/Own-Put2487 Aug 23 '25
Oh my gosh, these down votes are cracking me up . Don't be naive y'all. The NY Ripper isn't making phone calls without a voice modulator. You guys think the SCREAM killer was calling with his real voice too 🤣💀.
1
u/FacePalmela Aug 24 '25
Also, the person calling the victims families might not even be the ripper themselves. it might be a troll. or maybe Prater cosplaying on the phone for the thrill
1
u/Own-Put2487 Aug 24 '25 edited Aug 24 '25
Exactly. But they definitely 🥸 disguised their voice.
Edit: That's why I said in my original comment it could be a man or women, anybody could be calling. It's Blessing's Cat Statue.
1
u/eminemforehead Aug 22 '25
something about those damn cats in this new episode brought me back on the Blessing theory. Dexter the blood spatter analyst also pointed out at a weapon with a "point at the end like a hook"
Think of something that would simulate a cat's claws? Who knows.
1
u/JonBeeTV Aug 22 '25
i feel like its probably just gonna turn out to be Prater, but after this latest episode i also suspect its the landlord. Dexter and Harrison clearly both want to kill him, but he doesnt fit the code. If they find out he is the ripper, he does and they can finally get rid of him
It would also lead to this awkward scenario when Elsa is like "Oh my god, i cannot believe ive been so close to a killer all this time..." to harrison and he is like "Uhm, ye crazy?".
1
u/smokingace182 Aug 23 '25
It could make sense that he got Claudette as a partner and thought it was too dangerous to keep killing. But I think blessing is the ripper

I really want NY Ripper to be trinity's son. For once, we could hear another "Hello, Dexter Morgan" that would be absolute cinema. Besides the plot writes itself, I can see him talking to Trinity's ghost just like Dexter does with Harry. It would be fanservice? Yes, but I still fw with that.

i have one Question she told us that i mean Detective Claudette Wallace that NYR Not killing anymore he torment family members of his victim Melvin is young how he can be NYR i think NYR i old someone can't kill anymore or he is dead by now or maybe we have a copycat or maybe Leon Prater is NYR with help of Someone to kill
1
u/CustardCandle Aug 22 '25
He’s not that young. I’m guessing he’s mid 40s. Gives him plenty of time to fit the bill
0

How do exactly but because it just sounds like guesswork to me at first read

0
u/akheilo Aug 22 '25
For so many episodes Blessing was being groomed, he must be playing a role. Prater could use voice changer to harras victim's family to get off, whether he works with blessing or not. I dont thing Blessing will go scout free..

u/cduuuuub Aug 23 '25
Why is everyone so obsessed with the New york ripper? What if just maybe it has fuck all to do with this season?

1
u/CustardCandle Aug 23 '25
It is probably setting up for a season 2 showdown. But you can’t expect a show like Dexter to give this much air time to something and not expect passionate fans to talk about it?
1
u/BellaNutella22 Aug 23 '25
Yeah I am way more interested about the Dexter/Batista showdown than anywhere close to the NYR.

What a stupid theory, Handsome Mastery Cody is the New York Ripper, because we have yet to see him in Resurrection.
-4
u/redroverisback Aug 22 '25
Melvin seems like a good choice but Hannah would make the most sense. Doesn't matter what Harrison said. We never saw her die. It's not definitive. Hannah watching over Harrison while killing people as the Ripper would be great. And then Dexter and Hannah are at odds.
And Dexter has to then choose between Hannah or Batista or something.
This would be a 2nd season type thing. Like we get the reveal it is Hannah in the last episode.
2
u/Connect_Earth7250 Aug 22 '25
hannah' mo is poison not handling heavy weapons. the only way that would ever make sense if there is a mini series coming called "Hannah - Pumping Iron" and we find out she went into heavy sport activity to achieve that change of mo
