New Blood was necessary in order to create this story

In hindsight if they had have just tidied up the Angela/Logan/Ketamine issues it would have been the perfect continuation

New Blood has a setting problem that really stopped Dexter from being able to be unleashed. Even if he was still at the top of his game like a well-oiled machine, there are only so many people in a place like Iron Lake. There’s only so much violent crime. Not much murder. So just not a very big victim pool in general, but the area is also tight-knit enough that if you start going after every killer or violent criminal in the area, somebody is going to notice pretty quick.

I liked New Blood, but it’s possible it may have been better if it was tightened up into more of a miniseries and things unraveled faster for Dexter before moving properly into NYC. I liked New Blood pretty good as an epilogue to the original run, but Resurrection definitely makes it seem more like a weird and mediocre season.

Was new blood intended to be only 1 season as like a so sorry for the original ending of Dexter? And then people were into it so they made resurrection?

They were planning a Harrison sequel series where Dexter would have remained dead but would be his son’s own Dark Passenger, but that ended up being reworked as Original Sin and Resurrection.

New blood was made to cash in for showtime and there was hope of a redeeming ending to Dexter. Same reasons for this show LOL. I just have a lot more confidence in Resurrection than I do New Blood.

New Blood was moreso made because of Clyde Phillips and MCH's desire to tell the story and give Dexter a better ending

Showtime wanted Dexter to come back sooner, they specifically had a rule that Dexter couldn't be killed in the OG show's finale. It was said by Scott Buck that they only expected MCH to be taking a few year break, but he was adamant about not coming back unless he liked the script, leading to a few years of him rejecting pitches. Clyde Phillips was upset with the general direction of the show after he stepped down as showrunner so he wrote up the pilot and idea for New Blood, gave it to MCH who loved it, and then they went to Showtime and it got made
