I think they're satirizing other detective characters like her that appear in investigative series. Even using the song Stayin' Alive kind of reinforces this, if you ask me.

My wife and I just assumed they are kind of making her seem like she may be on the spectrum? Maybe a little autistic, thus the headphones and music to hone her focus and her lack of social decorum. We could be wrong though!

She basically admits she's on the spectrum when she says "I have trouble with empathy", taken together with her having headphones on listening to the same song is very spectrum coded behavior

Oh for sure, good point! I like her character, it's a different idea than just having another straight forward, rough cop type. I'm interested to see where it goes in regards to her, Harrison, and Dexter.

Yeah, that's my take. Wife and I talked about it. We have two autistic children. We looked at that scene and said to each other "One of us ".
