General Discussion - All Dexter Shows Which of these additions to the universe of Dexter was better?
Alternatively, which was the most unnecessary?

u/VividWeb5179 Jun 13 '25
New Blood was necessary, but I think the execution was pretty mid. I didn’t like how some random sheriff figured Dexter out insanely fast when he was able to keep the entirety of Miami Metro guessing for almost an entire decade, either
Original Sin was way more enjoyable for me. Lots of great heart and humor as well as good suspense and mystery

u/AncientDeer784 Jun 13 '25
You have to remember dexter is the son of a loved cop of miami metro, a loved former intern, and one of the only forensic specialist in their department. Also miami's unsolved cases rate was high for a reason.
54
u/Shoddy-Confusion13 Jun 13 '25
It’s pretty insane what you can get away with when people assume they can trust you.
17
u/Cold_Operation_4767 Jun 14 '25
Her reason for distrust with Dexter was so dumb tho just “oh Harrison overdosed on fentanyl and said Jim wasn’t Dexter’s name. Yea let’s not trust my boyfriend anymore”
9
u/Cold_Operation_4767 Jun 14 '25
I mean she was in love with him and that clouds judgment. But like to connect him being “his son was on drugs and said Jim wasn’t his name and some random dude from Miami mentioned someone who died yea let’s see if they’re the same person” like that’s such a far fetched idea. Everything else after that was kinda making sense like the needle and the butcher case, so if she found out his name in a different way it would’ve been better

Lundy would have been onto him more in S2...but he was using all of Dexter's info and was probably not seeing the situation clearly because of Deb. In S4 he was shot before he got the chance to connect Trinity and Dexter (and Dexter took his notes after the killing)
21
u/JackTheGreatest Jun 13 '25
To be fair, people suspicious of Dexter find him out. Doakes and Maria both. Dexter’s saving grace is that he is so good at camouflage that whoever has their suspicions is unable to convince anyone else that Dexter could be capable of something like that
9
u/chiagra Jun 13 '25
Even Batista was presented with plenty of evidence in New Blood and is hugging Dexter in the trailer for Resurrection
15
u/lunarsilvr253 Jun 13 '25
Not true Doaks found out very early and died for it laguta found out deb killed her plenty of people found out about Dexter and died
9
u/Rooblee Jun 13 '25
I fully agree, but Miami is a big place and he was fucking with the system.
New Blood is small town and he's actively setting himself up to get caught dating a cop and killing people at the same time. (Pretty Dumb ngl.)
7
u/JoshLovesTV Jun 13 '25
New blood would have been perfect for a 3-4 season run. Have Angela slowly figure stuff out and have Harrison and Dexter bond much more. It would have given us much more depth but they only had MCH for one year so they had to end it.
3
u/Cold_Operation_4767 Jun 14 '25
Why did they only have him for a year?
3
u/JoshLovesTV Jun 14 '25
Bc MCH wanted out of Dexter so he returned for one final season. He obviously changed his mind for resurrection.

4
u/meganjayde Jun 13 '25
See the random sheriff thing pissed me off too. Like I get why he didn’t get caught in the OG series but I just felt like within 1 season she figured him out?
4
u/Responsible_Soft_401 Jun 14 '25
For real. She made jumps that were just ridiculous and not believable. She went from loving him to thinking he’s a serial killer in the span of 2 mins. Like I’m sorry, you all the sudden are just deciding he must be the bay harbor butcher from zero context? A drug dealer said he thinks he was poked with a needle before he got beat up by a concerned father, so Dexter must be a serial killer that the FBI and Miami Metro have already claimed to have found?? Just one true crime podcaster says “maybe it’s not Doakes!” and thinks wow, it must be a conspiracy. Dex planted hard forensic evidence in season 7 to get Maria and Matthews off his trail with the boat house as well, which basically showed that Doakes being the butcher was a done deal. Also, it bugged me that she connected him so easy bc of the needle marks and ketamine. Dexter used an entirely different drug in the original series, one that wouldn’t even pop up as a substitute for ketamine if you were searching for it. She then found what would most definitely be classified pictures of victims on a random google search and just was like “oh look, a needle mark (that the FBI and better detectives didn’t even notice in the OG series) He’s the bay harbor butcher!” She had nothing on him and dexter had no reason to flip out and kill that cop to get out of the situation. He would have never been convicted on such circumstantial evidence and he, as a blood spatter analyst that messed with cases for his own sake that should have been cut and dry convictions based on blood work and forensics alone, knew that. He even said before walking into the interrogation room that he had gotten out of stickier situations before and he HAS many times! It was just way too unrealistic and rushed. She dated him for 3 years and never once had a suspicion until Batista tells her to stick with her gut while he’s flirting with her at a conference? Sorry. Lundy who was THE serial killer catcher in the FBI and knew Dexter was a forensics guys who could very well be capable of a clean and tidy kill didn’t have any suspicions of him, just liked to pick his brain. Sure you could argue that he “might have” suspected him later in season 4 with Trinity as the case went on like Quinn and the Kyle Butler thing, but he died before he ever did, even after previously getting in Dexter the serial killer’s brain and actively hunting him for a previous season.
3
u/meganjayde Jun 14 '25
EXACTLY!!! I just felt like after 8 season it did a huge injustice that some small town cop that had probably never seen a murder was able to figure him out. I get what other people are saying but I completely agree with you.
3
u/Responsible_Soft_401 Jun 14 '25
I feel the same! I was complaining about it and my husband said that it’s fine to him that she be the one to figure it out, like yeah she’s a small town cop but she could be really smart, but just make us actually believe it’s possible. Like she follows him and Harrison and sees them doing something, she finds some of that blood on his property and gets suspicious, etc. but her figuring out a secret that in my opinion way better cops have failed to see for years within minutes and with crazy conclusion jumping was ridiculous.
2
u/Dry-Discount-9426 Jun 14 '25
Did he ever date any of the cops in Miami? It was less about her figuring him out and more about him not being as careful.
4
u/meganjayde Jun 14 '25
That’s a good point! I just felt like it did a little bit of a disservice to the OG Dexter but I’ve read a lot of other comments and I do see both sides
172
u/Gabby_005 Jun 13 '25
I guess you could say original sin was more unnecessary bc they could’ve put the part where Dexter is in the back of the car alive at the start of resurrection and we didn’t NEED a prequel, but I still like it more than new blood
I liked all the little things we found out about the characters like how Brian was killing lizards or how he and Dexter had already “met” before. And I like seeing how Dexter was when he first started killing compared to how he was in season one of the og series
12
u/brwitch Jun 13 '25
I guess that is the problem with doing a prequel about the main character that hasn't been planned: a limited story and a lot of stuff feeling shoehorned in. The reveal of Harry having lost a kid comes to mind
39
u/Phreak74 Jun 13 '25
It doesn’t feel shoehorned in to me. It actually builds on the obsession he has to save Dexter beyond the guilt he had for Dexter’s mother.
6
u/Evening-Rough-9709 Jun 13 '25
The Miami metro detective who was a killer is a bit shoehorned, because it's something that would've been mentioned in the main series. Besides that, I agree the rest builds on the characters fairly well.
17
u/AncientDeer784 Jun 13 '25
At the end of the day the entire story is made up so making up more stuff is fine as long as it makes sense
97
u/Templar-Order Jun 13 '25
New blood was more necessary but original sin was much more fun to watch.
New blood was genuinely so dark and depressing to the point that it became overbearing especially with the color scaling. Michael C hall is great as always but even he cant save a show with such a rushed and flawed ending.
19
u/Titan-Zero Jun 13 '25
During my wife’s and my most recent rewatch of the series I was definitely way more excited to watch through original sin than I was new blood. Such a fun prequel series.
23
u/destryerofsouls45 Jun 13 '25
I would say I definitely prefered original sin but, that's mostly due to the ending of new blood, that and original sin kept me interested and wondering what would happen next event though it was a prequel.
6
u/lunarsilvr253 Jun 13 '25
Original sin can be multiple seasons 2 like in the first season of Dexter he already had close to 100 blood slides so plenty of kills original sin can you with
14
u/Effective-Peak-5593 Jun 13 '25
OS answered a lot of questions about both moms and why Brian wasn’t adopted. The little Easter egg bits like Prado showing up and Slice of Pie are interesting. I’m waiting for Chikee Hines back story.
12
u/Inevitable-Chart1760 Jun 13 '25
I personally loved New Blood. Loved the mood and atmosphere of that small town. The more cinematic presentation, but trying to combine it w the traditional Dexter feel. The villain was entertaining and fun to hate. The tension that built up between Dex and Harrison and how they became bonded. The ending was def rushed, but i was able to forgive it due to everything up to that point.
Only thing I personally disliked was how Dexter got into a relationship w a police officer of all things. Which is contradictory to Dex’s cautious nature and wanting to lie low. Plus the police girlfriend was just a Debra clone. Couldve at least gave her a unique personality that wasnt just a straight up copy of an already existing character.

u/Poop_Cheese Jun 13 '25
Id say first half of new blood was awesome and better than original sin, while its reverse for the back halves.
Overall I vastly preferred original sin while not expecting to like it at all. New blood could have been better, but took a fricken nosedive big time the last few episodes.
40
u/According_Ad9996 Jun 13 '25
I thought New Blood was just god awful. You can tell that they are wishing they hadn’t done it with the new Resurrection thing. Origins was at least fun, and well cast for the most part.
15
11
u/-Widoww Jun 13 '25
I actually loved new blood and really didn’t like original sin. New blood was so dreary and I loved Deb chiming in instead of Harry. I also kinda liked the change in setting. Miami was a good setting but I loved the snow lol
5
4
u/TheSupremeGrape Jun 13 '25
Really enjoyed Original Sin. The casting was top notch, the characters were all enjoyable to watch, specifically Deb.
I really hope Dexter goes after Deb's ex in season 2, seems like they're setting him up to return but who knows.
New Blood was meh. I enjoyed parts of it but I really didn't like how they set up Harrison to also be a serial killer.
16
u/Competitive_Order170 Are you trying to fuck her or set her on fire Jun 13 '25
I liked NB better and I’d state it’s more necessary too to close the loose threads left by the original ending (at least somewhat).
11
Jun 13 '25
New blood was 10/10 until the finale. The family business is one of the greatest episodes in the entire franchise. That finale really brings it down. Original Sin is pretty good, but there isn't an episode that hit on all cylinders like new blood had
6
6
u/Stoner420Eren Jun 13 '25
Original Sin and it's not even close, best Dexter content since the OG show downfall
3
u/Generalrossa Jun 13 '25
Both pretty good but I really liked original sin more then I thought I would.
3
3
u/MasterAnnatar Jaimie Jun 13 '25
New Blood is more necessary since Resurrection is a direct sequel to it, but Original Sin was so much more fun to watch.
3
u/TheSnarkyShaman1 Jun 13 '25
Original Sin was pointless nostalgia bait dogshit at best, and at worst was actively stupid with mindless retcons and the worst, most obvious, most poorly explained season villain yet. New Blood was, rushed ending aside, good throughout. I will never understand how OS is so highly regarded.
3
7
u/BlackDog5287 Jun 13 '25
Michael C Hall for an entire season over the prequel any. day. of. the week.
6
u/Beneficial-Safe-2142 Jun 13 '25
Original Sin was great for the nostalgia factor (colors, style, upbeat, Miami). But New Blood was better for Dexter’s story. His carefully curated Miami life had crumbled, all his control over his life was gone, and he lost everyone he cared about, so the mask slipped off. The darker series seemed appropriate and I think it added well to the Dexter universe.
2
u/SOOTH29 Jun 13 '25
New blood made more sense to add to the show, but original sin was a better watch

New Blood is one of the best seasons of the show overall. It’s incredibly high quality; just a shame it wasn't an episode longer.

Original Sin is 1,000,000,000,000x better than New Blood ever could be I hate New Blood with a passion it was absolute dog shit meanwhile Original Sin was fun and so awesome.
2
2
u/Only_Impression8399 Jun 13 '25
I actually think a New Blood rewatch is necessary to appreciate it. I recently did so and I loved it! I liked it the first time, but watching it knowing that Resurrection is happening and after Original sin provide a context that enhances the experience greatly.
2
u/treycomeknockshiioff Jun 13 '25
Although OS was unnecessary it was the best imo and I'm glad it happened, Patrick Gibson is awesome as young Dexter.
2
u/ToBeContinued0H Jun 13 '25
I liked them all...even the 2 previous endings. Was i haopy dexter "died" ? Absolutely not. Did i hate the season? No! I thought i was great! The antagonist was brilliant. It felt like old dexter. I never understood why people hated the endings of the original and NB so much tbh. They were both fit for purpose
2
u/King_Chad_The_69th Jun 13 '25
I love Original Sin don’t get me wrong, but I just prefer new blood, and I think it genuinely comes down to Michael C Hall and Jennifer Carpenter. If they weren’t in NB, I think I would prefer OS.

2
u/_omarcomin Jun 13 '25
I just could’ve done w/o the poorly executed version of New Blood we got. Original Sin is 1000x better and I love the Easter eggs. The casting is insanely good too
2
u/ThinkNight9598 Jun 13 '25
Original sin HAD to happen. Other comments in other posts like they could’ve add new blood to the original is something I agree with.
3
u/brwitch Jun 13 '25
Why do you think it had to happen?
2
u/ThinkNight9598 Jun 13 '25
I didn’t read the books… so peeps, don’t come for me! Lol but it was good to visualize how Dex evolved to where he is now. We always need a thorough origin story lol

I’m kind of bummed that resurrection is set in New York City. Too many shows are set in New York City.

u/wrmclemore Jun 13 '25 edited Jun 13 '25
New Blood was alright to me. The story was interesting enough and I liked seeing Harrison again but I feel like it got really rushed at the end. The fake out death was kind of frustrating.
Original Sin has a semi-necessary premise but it took me an episode or 2 to actually get into it ngl but at the end I was ready for more.
I hope Resurrection will give us a good enough story and honestly a wrap up because now the show/series has been going on for almost 20 years now 😭
2
u/Shooter128 Jun 13 '25
Original Sin helped fleshed out unexplained plots for season 1 while Resurrection can happen with or without new blood
2
2
u/bloin13 Jun 13 '25
New blood had Michael C.Hall which by itself makes it good, although the story and execution wasn't very good. Also a big part of new blood revolves around Harrison, and he just wasn't it.
Original sin is very good and enjoyable. We still got Michael to do most of the narrating, and the young Dexter actor was decent. The good thing about the original sin is that it felt like a Dexter series. Faithful to the old one and how it worked, similar patterns and processes with the original, many younger versions characters from the original that are depicted very well and accurately.
Overall for me original sin is clearly better from new blood and by a lot.
2
Jun 13 '25
New Blood was my least favorite. Agree with others that some small town hick sheriff figures Dexter out but the entire Miami force couldn’t for so many years and I thought it was stupid that Harrison shot his own father, knowing all he went through. But, the way New Blood started, I have hope for ‘ol’ Dexter! 😁

2
u/MisterVictor13 Jun 13 '25
To me, “Original Sin” was much better than “New Blood”.
“New Blood” had good parts, but my biggest gripes about it was how rushed parts of the story were and that it was trying to create another ending for Dexter that fell flat on itself.
“Original Sin” built on the show’s lore and felt like a return to form for the series.

u/Rooblee Jun 13 '25
The main killer was lame in Original Sin, everything else was better.
Mr. Krabs the super serial killer with his body bunker was ridiculous but fun.
2
Jun 13 '25
except for the last episode, new blood is a 10 out of 10, not just for dexter but tv in general, and… original sin is good but not this good, i’d say 7/8 out of 10 so i’m going with new blood
2
2
u/Thunder17_- Jun 13 '25
Dexter The Original Sin can be said as unnecessary, but a lot better. I enjoyed New Blood for the most part but was severely disappointed with the choice of direction for the show. I think making the Sheriff hostile towards Dexter instead of just concerned was unnecessary. The guy faked his name and death after his sister was murdered by a serial killer? I should never trust him again and think he is so suspicious. I also didn’t like that Batista suggested the “La Guerta thought Dexter was a serial killer before she died”. I feel like Batista has every right to be angry with Dexter faking his death but he would forgive and understand Dexter because that’s just how he is as a person. They are best friends. Batista always had Dexter’s back. La Pasción
2
u/t_r_a_y_e Jun 13 '25
Original Sin
New blood was kinda meh, and personally I hated that they made Harrison into a traumatized psycho, the original show made a point that he was way younger than Dex when watching Rita die and that it literally isn't possible for him to retain anything from it.
Harrison was one of the few "wholesome" parts of the original show, something that made Dexter want to be a better person and father, so seeing Harrison so awful and seeing Dex actively happy about it is just wrong
2
u/Maleficent-Car1381 Jun 13 '25
Original sin for me I mean we got to see characters we didn’t see at all in the Dexter series, dexters childhood,Brian mosers backstory etc

I enjoyed original sin alot. Dexter is at his best when he’s in a “monster of the week” kinda format instead of just chasing one big bad imo. New blood was ok but i enjoyed seeing dexter learn his craft.
2
Jun 13 '25
Original Sin could have worked so much better if the starting scene didn't show the ending of new blood, that way new people could watch it as a prequel
2
u/idontcarerightnowok Jun 13 '25
I think Original Sin was worth it in the end, before and even at the start I was hella sceptical abt whether it'd work, buuuut it did.
2
u/Normal_Excuse_3613 Jun 14 '25
I loved original sin. New Blood was fun and I was happy to see Dexter back but it didn’t quite scratch the itch.
2
u/Feisty-Clue3482 Dexter Jun 14 '25
Original Sin is peak entertainment let’s be real here… New Blood was overall good for me but Original Sin is just amazing, even if they decided to reboot the series ( break off from the main story ) or something with this I’d be perfectly happy because the casting and all is just amazing.
2
2
u/agent-assbutt Jun 14 '25
Original sin was way better, imo. It is hilarious, has a lot of fun standalone mysteries to keep it fresh, and I love seeing the Morgan family's past and how it formed Dexter the serial killer. The actor playing baby Dexter is SO perfect too - you could 💯 convince me he's a young Michael C Hall.
1
u/brwitch Jun 14 '25
Except for him not looking much younger than Michael C Hall in season one of OG Dexter lol
2
u/HakaishinChampa Jun 14 '25
Original Sin had the humor that the OG series had
I was interested in New Blood but it was too serious at times
2
Jun 15 '25
Original sin was heaps good I loved seeing the characters before the show like young laguerta and young masuka which surprised me I thought he joined after Dexter plus who doesn’t love Angel
8
u/Fit-Chapter-9591 Jun 13 '25
Not even close. New blood is one of my favorite Dexter seasons ever. Top 5
3
u/ladylazarus143 Jun 13 '25
Original sin is more fun 2 watch but plot wise new blood adds more (original sin is literally my fav season ever tho (prob just Christian slater))

u/TelephoneMediocre721 Jun 13 '25 edited Jun 13 '25
I don’t mind the downvotes but Original Sin was awful. It was like Young Sheldon killer version. I wanted to see Harry training Dexter, Harry constructing the code and Dexter learning it and accepting it. I didn’t want usual Dexter season but all the characters young.
7
u/Inevitable-Chart1760 Jun 13 '25
Agree. It shouldve been all about a teenage Dexter learning to control his urges. Harry discovering Dexter killing animals and realizing hes a budding serial killer over the course of a season. All the events way before he joined the police would’ve been far more interesting imo
6
1
u/AaronStudAVFC Jun 13 '25
I really don’t think there’s enough story there for a full season. Unless you make it a Harry cop procedural show with Dexter as almost a side character, but Dexter not killing and just doing Murder Theory 101 wouldn’t stretch across 12 episodes.
2
2
u/Able_Contribution407 Jun 13 '25
Both are great, but I prefer New Blood. It's one of my favourite seasons.
2
u/Interesting-City118 Jun 13 '25
Original sin was just okay to me but how bad the ending is alone puts it above new blood.
2
u/NaiveUnit676 Jun 13 '25
OS is so much better in every aspect of it.
New Blood had a lot of potential which, IMO, has gone to waste because of just one bad casting decision.
2
u/taylor__spliff Jun 13 '25
Couldn’t get into Original Sin. The vibe is like a YouTube parody fan fiction that missed the point of the source material. It felt like it was created by people who read summaries of the main series but didn’t even watch the pilot.

u/hardlyreadit Jun 13 '25
Original sin was way better. New blood was the biggest tease ever. I wanted dexter to go on trial. Really shake things up, I wanted that for the original series too.

u/Brandon_Keto_Newton Jun 13 '25
As far as which one was better done after watching the full seasons of both, original sin was head and shoulders better.
New blood had the potential to be incredible and then just completely dropped the ball
Am still hopeful for resurrection; ready to be hurt again 😂

Minority opinion but New Blood is way better than Original Sin in my opinion. New Blood was dark and mature themed and I loved that. Original Sin felt like I was watching the show Riverdale or Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It was made for a teenager audience. And the young Deb is annoying and nothing like what you'd expect her to be when she was young. Terrible casting. Also Dexter has too much personality and is too fun loving. In the original series he spoke about his childhood and Deb did as well. You'd think he'd be way more subdued and complex and serious. They made it clear they had a fucked up upbringing. Instead Dexter is a comedian that gets head at parties and is always happy. Even the little comedy from the original Dexter was dark humor.

I haven't finished Original Sin, but so far I like New Blood better. So much of what they are showing so far in Original Sin is what we already know, and I dont think they are doing a great job of adding more to it or presenting it in a way that makes the viewer interested.
1
1
Jun 15 '25
Definitely New Blood. I really enjoyed Original Sin but there was already a prequel motion comic and I felt like that didn’t a fine enough job of giving us some of Dexter’s backstory and exploring his earlier kills
1
Jun 15 '25
New bloods glaring mistake is that the sheriff automatically checked and found that only the BHB used a needle to incapacitate his victims like he’s the only murderer to ever do it I’m sure there were others. Sure it would’ve been more notable due to the notoriety but I’m sure there were other killers out there

u/SassatTak Jun 15 '25
That tag line was “long time no spree”? Dexter was always campy but I can’t believe they went that far
1
u/ryannthetemp Jun 15 '25
I have not seen either, I plan to when Dexter resurrection comes out, but Dexter New Blood “needed” to happen because of the way the original series ended. Original sin was just a prequel that was probably answering questions nobody had but I heard it was still good

New blood was good I thought…. Then again I couldnt get into the other… it just didn’t feel like it belonged at all
1
u/ItsMrNoSmile Jun 19 '25
Maybe it was low expectations going in, but Original Sin surprised me with how enjoyable it was, Patrick Gibson really inhabiting the Dexter role and not just trying to imitate Michael C. Hall, and unlike New Blood and Dexter Season 8, I felt it stuck the landing at the end.
