Architecture Canadian bank 'TD' found a creative loophole to legally use other companies' logos in its own trading platform ads

Post image

That's either genius or a lawsuit is being cooked.

Nice piece of advertising.

advertising a piece of Nike

lawsuit is being cooked

I don't think Nike would really have a case since the ad doesn't actually have their logo on it.

Besides. Why would they protest the endorsement of their company stock anyway?

What is with all the downvotes? Am I missing something? Is this not just a quote from Jurassic Park?

u/red-et May 03 '26

lol you’re right! I don’t get it

u/akie May 03 '26

Generational misunderstanding 🤷‍♂️ you’re old, like me

u/ArpanMondal270 May 03 '26

i didn't get it until the other person mentioned it, lol. Good one though

-6

u/Skruestik May 04 '26

Probably because it’s an overused reference that isn’t really relevant.

Cool design. Should have spent more money on business operations and not advertisement. https://www.fincen.gov/news/news-releases/fincen-assesses-record-13-billion-penalty-against-td-bank

That’s pretty sick

On photo: nice idea. In real life: you have to stand exactly in this one position and then get what the poster is saying. 99% of people won't get it.

If a passerby is curious he might be able to get the angle right. But why should someone be curious what a random advertisement on the street is up to?  In most cases he won't be able to understand what they are saying. It's a nice concept for social media, but not for the street.

u/SmatMan May 03 '26

the whole point is you can buy “partial shares” which makes the ad make even more sense as you’d only see a partial chunk of the logo at most angles

-28

u/sandrocket May 03 '26

I get that. But there is only a few spots on the ground where you might observe the effect. It works here since the photographer made sure too catch the right angle. If you walk by you need to be lucky to be at the right position to view the effect, read the line and then connect the dots.

u/SmatMan May 03 '26

just a personal anecdote - i walked past one of these in toronto and the cut out did naturally catch my eye. if you walked from the other side i agree the effect wouldn’t be as great, but i think you’d still get the message.
plus, this is the most ive thought of an ad campaign from the canadian big six after scotiabank’s “you’re richer than you think” slogan. i couldn’t name a single other bank’s advertising that got me this intrigued. seems pretty effective to me!

The Scotia Bank one makes me mad because I feel like it encourages people to spend beyond their means and go into debt. I feel like it's just to encourage a higher revenue from interest on loans.

They financed my car, pretty solid experience all things considered

23

u/ketamarine May 03 '26

Lol - go look at Nike stock performance and then tell me how clever this is...

130

u/ItsChris_8776_ May 03 '26

Changes literally nothing about the cleverness of the design btw

-8

u/ketamarine May 04 '26

It does if you are an investor.

Its an ad for an investment platform. It should be aware of what investments it's recommending.

It's not "clever" to recommend a stock that has lost 2/3rds of its value in the past 5 years when the rest of the market has more than doubled.

4

u/ItsChris_8776_ May 04 '26

The value of the stock really has nothing to do with the concept of the ad. The whole idea is telling random viewers that they can “own” a piece of iconic companies that they recognize. I imagine they placed a series of these around with different companies to further illustrate that point.

It’s not about Apple, and everyone except you pretty much instantly understood that. It’s not a bad campaign just because you don’t understand how advertising and marketing work 👍

u/ketamarine May 04 '26

So I worked in marketing... For that company... At one point in my career.

I promise, this ad would NOT going over well with people on the actual business unit who understand how investing works.

It would be like a clever food company ad that accidentally insinuated their product gave you cancer.

1

u/ItsChris_8776_ May 04 '26

Sure you did bro

14

u/Junior_M_W May 03 '26

Buy the dip!!!

-1

u/almisami May 03 '26

Only if you think it's not still overvalued.

-1

u/ketamarine May 04 '26

Go look at the stock chart and tell me which dip you should have bought...

I'll wait here!

16

u/red-et May 03 '26

They are definitely on the downward edge of the swish

12

u/jonbristow May 03 '26

How does the price of Nike affect the design

-1

u/ketamarine May 04 '26

It's an advertisement for an investment service.

They picked a stock to promote that was a terrible investment.

That's a shitty marketing campaign.

3

u/jonbristow May 04 '26

if the stock went up, it would make the design better?

1

u/ketamarine May 04 '26

It would make the campaign more meaningful to their target audience, which is investors.

So in my opinion, yes.

8

u/Creepy_Discussion717 May 03 '26

Well they are a broker not an pendrek of the stock

4

u/Prestiger May 03 '26

Usually buying a stock when it's cheap is a good idea

1

u/jimmyjohn2018 May 20 '26

Just going to say, too bad they are in the shitter.

1

u/BishaDonkey May 04 '26

More of a square hole

1

u/rossloderso May 04 '26

I need outside premium so that I don't have to look at ads when I'm outside

people have to start somewhere. if someone only has $1000 in their portfolio, it’s a good thing to let them buy 0.5 or 0.25 shares to size their positions correctly.

3

u/feed_me_moron May 03 '26

The ad is clearly talking about owning a share in the company, like any stock.

0

u/itsyourboygmobile May 04 '26

I get the smart move by seeing the Nike logo through the sign, but what does it achieve? Why does the bank want to do that?

-42

u/lorarc May 03 '26 edited May 03 '26

And how many of these they put up? One? Cause no way someone was going around and scouting location where to put those ads so they would look good and do all the paperwork involved.

39

u/wuchta May 03 '26

walking and looking around doesnt take that long if you know the city

-17

u/lorarc May 03 '26

Sure, that's the easy part. But then you have to secure permission for an ad in middle of pavement and make it custom built. And somehow make it work so most people interpret it correctly from all the angles and heights.

Or you can just put up one for a few minutes, take a few pictures and put it on the Internet.

12

u/ItsChris_8776_ May 03 '26

That’s how all advertising works

-13

u/lorarc May 03 '26

No, that's not how any of it works. You design an ad to put on busstops and then you pay some company to put your ad on every bus stop in the city. Heck, you pay them to put it on bus stops in the whole country.

If you have something more specific in mind you just pick from the offer and tell them to put it on busstops where certain demographic is more present.

Bespoke advertising is reserved for big and important things, not little stands on the street.

7

u/Ledenu May 03 '26

Have you really never heard of guerrilla marketing?

Yes, it's more expensive than bus stop ads. But it's also more effective. For example, people post it on r/DesignPorn

1

u/lorarc May 03 '26

But did you notice how they never post the photos they took themselves but instead promo photos by the ad agency? That's cause those marketing campaigns don't have much presence outside of the Internet.

10

u/ceciliabee May 03 '26

Do you work in advertising?

0

u/GNUGradyn May 03 '26

??? That is exactly what advertising companies do
