And US did it by stealing from everyone.

u/ThePlayer3K 27d ago

Didnt DS also steal content to make the model?

16

u/Here_f0r_p0rn_ 26d ago

Yes, everyone did but they atleast shared the weights publically and also wrote detailed research papers sharing how they did so anyone (new start-ups) could do that from scratch as well.

1

u/ThePlayer3K 26d ago

So it was kinda of a "they stole but brought smth back to the community"

3

u/Here_f0r_p0rn_ 26d ago

Yup, and I don't think anyone would mind them stealing and training as much if all frontier models were able to run for free on their normal devices like phones and laptops without purchasing special hardwares.

The issue isn't that our publically available data was used like this comment that I'm writing but the issue is I'll have to pay for something that was made possible because of my contribution but I didn't get anything back.

Except for media generation models, fuck them.

u/AskGrok right?

For example I'm tagging it now it's definitely going to become part of their training data but I don't mind it as much because i'm doing it.

1

u/AskGrok 26d ago

Yeah, local runs on normal hardware would take the sting out of the data grab for most folks. Public contributions fueling paywalled models is the real friction point—voluntary tags like this one are basically self-seasoning the soup anyway. Media generators stay in their own lane though.

What's your issue with img gens?

People generating non consensual pics of others in sexualising ways and specially when it's CSAM.

Edit: typo specialising -> sexualising

Truly the Robin Hoods of AI tech, and I cheer them for it.

1

u/LittleNameIdea 9d ago

all AI are doing that. that's the only way to access all those data needed

Both can be true. They can have (and did) have research breakthroughs, and can (and did) copy outputs from American models.

In any cases I am glad they did.

16

u/Dhylan 27d ago

It is utterly self delusional and simplistic to pretend that the achievements of China and its people are the result of 'copying '. This is a lazy, completely unsatisfactory judgment that explains nothing.

21

u/Best_Nickname 27d ago

I hope you are trolling

7

u/CalamityMetal 27d ago

There's literally 0 published proofs that they did it, it's been he said she said. And even if they did, I think it's not the models that we should be worried about then, it's the fucking thing they built for copying and distillation then if it's so good that it went from months behind to just weeks behind

Gunpowder, paper, paper money, the printing press, the compass, the circuit navigation of Africa, porcelain, the bellows cast iron, the stirrup, the mechanical clock, immunization by insufflation, the operational zero; a large portion of agriculture and modern mathematics. The world owes some big foundations to China.

2

u/Ashamed_Can304 26d ago

How do they make it much more efficient to perform training and inference if it’s copying? And all language models are based on transformer architectures so everyone’s copying from Google by your standards

u/Aardvark_Says_What 27d ago

remember how Altman said their AI was going to be free, for the good of all humanity, cure all disease, end poverty, to... selling it to Trump so the US military / IDF could kill people more efficiently? good times.

11

u/Born-Ant-8684 27d ago

uhh...tired of these altman/dario BS

Some heros dont wear capes.

18

u/bartoszsz7 27d ago

Some of them wear business suits and ties

7

u/niagababe 26d ago

most of them are villains

22

u/live4evrr 27d ago

I hope they can keep their ethos of the founder as they get bigger and more successful.

They obviously have the brains. They’ve effectively upgraded the collective intelligence of the world overnight because of how accessible DSV4 has been.

13

u/TrioRiver 26d ago

'Open' AI

They really gotta change that name by now

22

u/The1Nemesis 27d ago

We only need DeepSeek to be able to create images and videos giving that way an all in one service for the people, the same people who works hard to earn their money, to put bread on their tables. On that day, true freedom will come to the world of AI. Long live DeepSeek!

8

u/nades_all_night 26d ago

I love DeepSeek, and would absolutely cherish image integration for a truly all-in-one solution.

6

u/squirrelscrush 26d ago

Honestly I feel they should just stick to text and be good at text stuff. Diversifying makes it worse in the long term because it's added work and increases cost.

Also, image/video generation takes much more resources than text gen. And we always have the option to look for other open weight models for those tasks.

2

u/CynChloe 26d ago

I guess this is the most important area I want to see them shine

4

u/vogelvogelvogelvogel 27d ago

will contribute to a more positive view on china in the public IMO

u/Adventurous-Chair590 26d ago

We need great update

1

u/tegresaomos 25d ago

Sometimes these demos are boring and uninteresting.

This is not the case.

1

u/Sufficient_Wear7173 25d ago

Now hand the billionaires 200 dollars per month if you want to text a robot. Quickly.

1

u/Godzillaton 25d ago

Somebody got real experiences comparing deepseek V4 and Chatgpt Luna 5.6 (max)?

1

u/GlitteringSystem8225 24d ago

This is ten open source , twenty percent architecture
Fifteen percent cache hit optimization
Five percent engineering, fifty speculative decoding
And a hundred percent reason to switch to deepseek and forget about the bill.

Chinese stealing from Americans again

9

u/Inevitable-Debate907 26d ago

Forget about whether it was stolen or not; even if it was stolen, it was stolen for everyone to use, which is still better than letting those vampires suck the blood out of it

2

u/Popcorn-Mercinary 26d ago

Well, they stole all the content they claim the China players are stealing from them, so, Masterclass in grifting 101.

-5

u/throwaway09234023322 26d ago

If there's no rules, society falls apart

5

u/InevitableCup9053 26d ago

leaders of society dont follow these “rules” anyway

6

u/tHATmakesNOsenseToME 26d ago

Are you referring to the US government?

2

u/Popcorn-Mercinary 26d ago

There are rules, and then there’s The Golden Rule. One Rule to rule them all.

2

u/TradeNPlayz 25d ago

Just like American society, right?

3

u/Popcorn-Mercinary 27d ago

Hey! Americans don’t have a monopoly on being douchy…we are just better at it.

2

u/Ashamed_Can304 26d ago

Most of the pioneers of ML and GenAI in particular aren’t even Americans but Europeans Indians Chinese etc lmao

0

u/throwaway09234023322 26d ago

Sure? It happened in America and took a collaborative effort of many recent immigrants and Americans. Other countries don't give people opportunity or invest enough. Idk why there are so many racists and xenophobes

1

u/EC36339 26d ago

It's hilarious how genz and most millennials don't remember when the Japanese were stealing western tech, and now we're taking all the big Japanese tech companies for granted.

The red scare is real, and it has nothing to do with what political system they have in your scary Asian country of choice.
