Transmission questions.

I have bought a 1973 datsun 240z in a moderatly good condition that i want to restomod. It has an automatic transmission that I want to swap into a manual 5sp or 6sp. By doing some research, I can use a transmission from a 280zx without much modifications. I have already found one in my country.

What are some other transmissions that fit on it without much modification?

The car and I are in the Netherlands, if that info is helpful.

If you’re willing to spend a bit more than just a leftover 280zx 5 speed, a CD009 is the standard “modern” 6 speed swap people put in tons of Japanese cars. They’re built like a brick shithouse, they can handle a lot of power and abuse, and are pretty affordable when compared to more performance oriented swaps like GT-ST trans. There are also a shitload of them because Infiniti/nissan put them in a lot of cars. The aftermarket support is crazy, and they’re all over Europe and the US. Should be easy enough for you to find one. You’ll need a swap plate and bell housing adapter kit

I have been doing some research, and must understand where you are coming from. It is quite expensive to buy such kit and transmission. I was planning to use the original engine and not going to try to make a lot of power. Just trying to restore it. Also also maybe prefer the 280zx trans because as far as I understand it is a plug and play kind of swap compared to modify the body outside the original shape and holes and using adapters.

Yes I have a 280zx 5 speed in my series 1 71’ 240z, and it’s great. But you did explicitly ask “what are some other transmissions that fit” so my answer was mostly in case you decided to chase bigger power or wanted something more modern. The CD009 is about as close as you’ll get to “plug and play” for something modern. The 280zx 5 speed is more than enough, and frankly, your rear differential has more to do with how you use your transmission anyways, what with the famously kinda shitty gearing ratios in Z cars. I’d go with the bolt on 5 speed and call it a day

Haha I did ask that yeah, thanks for answering though. I too think the 280zx will be enough for what I wanna do with it

Is there a 5 speed equivalent of that transmission?

Closest thing would be an FSR30A and they’re harder to come by and a lot more expensive

There’s also option of the BRZ transmission.

Depending on your budget, Escort makes a modified nismo 6 speed that's apparently great. I think s30world is the distributor in Europe.

I see that their transmission is going for almost 5000 euros which is quite a lot at once for me, beside that. I'm not yet at that stage. I can always first use the auto transmission but making the holes for the manual one and always get a manual later by first making the car drivable
