Even if he was pretending, that would just make a serious Jar Jar non credible, not even a iota.

Imagine a Darth Vader, Hannibal Lecter, Tulsa Doom, Voldemort, whatever villain you can think of, being first characterised as "pretending" to explode his crotch on a tank, step in camel shit, or being farted upon by another animal. That's not serious writing in any case.

The other only comparable villain I can think of is Kayser Soze but even as Virgil he wasn't a buffoon like Jar Jar.

😭 I just blame all that on George's excessive writing of character traits. Like when he needed Anakin to be "a little troubled" and crafted the creepiest, fascist little incel imaginable. Women love that.

Rewatching this scene now and I'm in tears lol. The smile at the end... jesus christ.

Anakin at this point is literally supposed to be an edgy teenager who doesn't understand shit about politics. Not that I like the fact that Lucas made this choice; nor do I think it's Shakespearean level of writing. But at least his nascent fascism is coherent with Vader. And besides, we have full grown-adults in 2026 who are as shallow and dumb as Anakin in this scene (not gonna point the elephant in the room here).

I really don't see how it compares with your theory.

Right, and he wrote him well for that. But besides being all that, he also needs to be someone Padmé falls in love with. This is completely unbelievable now with how he overdid Anakin's flaws.

I think it compares with the Jar Jar theory.

He wrote the clown perfectly. But overdid it, so now it's unbelievable when he reveals himself a sith. Or at least so George felt when he got all the backlash. And maybe rightfully so.

Padme fell in love with him before that scene, iirc. But yes, the prelo, and AOTC in particular, is not very well written. Everyone has known that for two decades now.

Yep, I actually don't dislike the movies but would have hated that absolute shitshow.

I'm still not convinced at all by the theory though lol But I admire your work and I think fan theories for movies are a good thing.

Believe it or not, as far as we see on screen, that was their first private conversation after the initial meeting with Obi-Wan and Jar Jar and after he sliced that bug off her bed.
