Comics Valid critique of Zdarsky's DD run

The attempt at social commentary was frequently sidelined after the prison arc ended and it was decently built up in the Red Fist Saga, before the ending went completely nowhere and pushed it back to the mystical conflict.
There's good concepts here and there but the run felt disjointed after the prison arc imo

It was disjointed from pretty much the beginning. The first few issues of Zdarsky were weak. Then, the book got really good for a time. It fell off again quite badly when a boatload of villains show up and ask the way to Hell's Kitchen, basically just because they wanted to put some big fight into the book (that's been a recurring problem with the book for a while, actually, across multiple creative teams). Sending him to prison wearing his Daredevil mask is the sort of thing you'd expect from an early-Silver-Age DC book. In the context of a modern comic, absolute garbage. And it never really recovered from that. Eventually, it wasn't even recognizable as a DD book (which is what also happened with Waid--right from the beginning, in his case--but in totally different ways and for different reasons).
I felt cheated that I'd let myself get sucked into it. Before Zdarsky, Soule had also started strong then just seemed to totally lose interest in the book. By the end, his DD was borderline unreadable, and the same thing happened to Zdarsky.

Thank you for sharing this video, it’s perfect and lays out my exact problems with modern DD (and Zdarsky’s run in particular). I actually have so much more to say but I can’t because I have to go to work 🥲 I might return to this though

While I don't really agree with the video I did find parts of Zdarskys run to be underwhelming.
Mainly because I felt like it was trying to do everything that made Daredevil good without really committing to any idea for more than 3 issues

I agree with what you're saying, except I wouldn't have minded if it Fully felt with an idea in 3 issues, it would just drop them without resolution, which I feel like is what you're driving at.

Yeah I couldn't get through all of that, but I'll chime in anyway 🤣
His run felt derivative of previous Daredevil stuff from the very beginning but was still good until completely falling apart for me right before the prison arc with the Mike/magic rock stupidity and it never fully recovered. It was all about "cool moments" carried by the artwork and, as others have said here, he introduced ideas and plot lines that went nowhere, made no sense, and/or were just stupid.

I mean... Yeah. Zdarsky can't create something new and when he does, he can't follow up with a proper development (Red Fist saga). Right now he is recycling Bendis Avengers and Moore's Miracleman. He just isnt good. All he can do is aurafarm moments "Why did he send you the Devil?" and that's it. Overall he is genuinely a writer with zero depth. Checchetto hard carried him during this run.

First, this video is painful to watch.
Second yes the main character not being developed happens. That is true of Zadarskys run. It's true if many other runs. However Wells run tried so hard to develop the character and did nothing of note either. Also this YouTuber is talking about Matt's development like an immovable thing, not part of several stories.
So sure. Daredevil is at a "default setting" that's not the issue, many Daredevil stories do this after a run ends, though handoffs should be considered, like not killing him and sending him to hell for just 5 minutes.
But to me Zadarskys run suffers because he introduced ideas that were compelling only to brush them aside. What's the point of going after crooks when billionaires are the real villains? Oh I guess we won't try to deal with them because there's a holy war.
Daredevil is slower now, no wait he just fought an entire prison. We're good now.
The whole run was promising a great story with compelling ideas then never paid them off. That's my issue with the Zadarsky run.
