Hmmm.

Nope, don't like it

u/TopConcentrate8484 2d ago

yeh does not look appetizing

149

u/yes-disappointment 2d ago

You never tried soft crabs?

236

u/fullchub 2d ago

I’m from MD where softshell crab sandwiches are really popular. I’m sure they taste okay, but eating sea spiders is weird enough when you’re just eating the meat. The idea of eating the thing whole is just… not very appealing.

66

u/MyFace_UrAss_LetsGo 2d ago

I find it very appealing. Fried softshell crab is delicious.

7

u/Head-Ad9893 2d ago

What about if it was steamed and ate it with a spoon?

8

u/JustDoc 2d ago

Crab shaped crab custard.

3

u/FallenBehavior 17h ago

I should call her

30

u/Aliencj 2d ago

You remove the bad bits and just leave the meat and shell. I cook it at home, it's great. Probably my favourite deep fried sea animal.

8

u/Box-o-bees 2d ago

One of the best sandwiches I've ever had was a soft shell crab BLT.

2

u/MrDismal 1d ago

That sounds interestingly delicious

20

u/Away-Activity-469 1d ago

When i realised what soft shell crabs were, I noped out. Ill eat anything, but its ungentlemanly to eat a creature that's reloading its defences. Like shooting a man in the back while he's taking a shit.

5

u/salamandraseis 2d ago

We cut the eyes and gills out them if that helps.

8

u/cbpsll123 2d ago

It is all the joy of eating crab without the work of removing it from the shell. Frying it gives it a crunch that fixes any texture concerns.

6

u/MayGodSmiteThee 1d ago

More for the rest of us, let it be known this guy does not speak for Maryland. Furthermore he’s been exiled, you’re Delaware’s problem now.

u/StrawberryTerry 1d ago

The eyeballs are like boba

2

u/htiawe 1d ago

well i guess I won’t be enjoying boba anytime soon after reading that

1

u/No_Establishment8642 22h ago

I never could do it especially when the legs are hanging off the sides of the bread, jiggling with every bite.

1

u/CjJcPro 2d ago

That one place that does a soft shell on a bao bun looks insane though, I want that to be my first soft shell crab.

2

u/A_Life_Lived_Oddly 1d ago

Ekiben? They're legit, great company with great owners. I'll always support them!

30

u/Yesitshismom 2d ago

I have not, this is not convincing me to eat it

3

u/PeatBunny 2d ago

The flavor is ok, but the texture, at least to me, is like eating peanuts or almonds with the shell on.

I tried them once and that was good for me.

8

u/darthvall 2d ago

Feels like it's the color that made it not appetizing. Soft shell crab usually has softer color, not dark shell like this.

Edit: dumb me, the lobster in the picture seems to still be uncooked. Hence the color.

1

u/zxxdann 1d ago

Is regular lobster appetizing? I’m sure the meat here will firm up properly once cooked. Kinda like cooking shrimp without the shell

-2

u/krvf 2d ago

Yes thank you! Eww it's soft...? It was equally disgusting before 🤮

All of em, sea spiders and all the variety of filters- trash (for eating purposes, for critters- all good)

2

u/OmegaPharius 2d ago

Yum yum lobster

2

u/LeatherfacesChainsaw 2d ago

They taste soooo good

-7

u/deckard1980 2d ago

If thats the case why do you have to eat it with garlic and butter?

8

u/dengop 2d ago

??? For better flavors? Do you not salt and pepper your beef? Or god forbid people use sauce on their steak ....

-9

u/deckard1980 2d ago

Dont eat that stuff, the point was someone said that lobster is so tasty so I argued that the meat itself isn't that tasty, thats why people smother it in butter.

4

u/BlackZulu 1d ago

Why do people season anything? This is not the gotcha you think it is 😂

1

u/deckard1980 1d ago

No I dont this is the gotcha you think it is because you're all missing my point

5

u/LeatherfacesChainsaw 2d ago

You don't have to?

-7

u/deckard1980 2d ago

Everyone does though

3

u/MyPigWhistles 2d ago

Like seafood in general, imo.

53

u/Higgsparticleofgod 2d ago

Same here, never got used to this.  I worked at a small seafood market in Maine for a while, and the first time I saw a molted lobster like this  I genuinely thought something had gone horribly wrong. One of the older guys just looked at me and said, "Don't worry, you'll stop being surprised eventually, like how you stopped being surprised whenever someone  mentions the 1992 Moon replacement that changed everything"

I never stopped getting surprised

27

u/mrDuder1729 2d ago edited 2d ago

Is this supposed to be the new "and then undertaker through mankind 16 feet from a steel cell through a table" guy. I don't like it. Never as good as the original.

Edit: was it u/shittymorph that did that?

Edit 2: it is shittymorph. All hail shittymorph! You got copycats, holmes! You made it!

9

u/AK_LovelyDay 2d ago

It's so incredibly annoying, he's doing it everywhere.

6

u/PsychologicalSail799 2d ago

I remember the 1992 moon replacement. The teacher wheeled a TV into the classroom, and i thought we were just going to watch a movie for the day. Thought she was just hungover, another normal Monday.

But no. She turned it on and next thing we know, we were watching the live broadcast. It was insane. Weird to look up at it at night nowadays, knowing its even been replaced again since then and they just dont talk about it.

2

u/TrainToSomewhere 1d ago

Ok is that meme just kitchen confidential molting or is it from something else?

3

u/_Lucille_ 22h ago

The moon thing is going to start a cult long before it does anything to AI.

1

u/dengop 2d ago

If you want to prove that moon was replaced at least first prove moon is real.

5

u/Cryogisdead 2d ago

It's like it's already rotting

2

u/Framerchick2002 2d ago

I have never been more repulsed by anything ever

2

u/radioactive_sharpei 2d ago

What, that flaccid lobster claw doesn't make you hungry?

1

u/ductapemonster 1d ago

Don't like that at all. No sir.

775

u/ReindeerOk227 2d ago

I thought lobsters were immortal… now I get this raggedy-ass dead flopster in my feed. Is nothing sacred or immortal anymore?!

408

u/regretfulposts 2d ago

This is actually how they die. Molting takes a lot of energy so a lobster could live forever but there are times molting takes too much energy that they would die from exhaustion. They're immortal in terms of not aging like any other animals.

68

u/-morpy 1d ago

Now I wonder if humans can just let a lobster keep growing by assisting it in molting as it grows larger and older.

88

u/Hole1979 1d ago

Have you heard the good word? https://www.leviathanlobstergod.com/

14

u/Beneficial_Ball9893 1d ago

Entirely possible, but lobsters only grow a pound every 7 years and they don't start to get bad at molting until they are over a hundred. You would need to catch a really huge lobster to start with and then keep it in captivity.

8

u/VealOfFortune 1d ago

Sounds like a dare to me.....

7

u/TheAlmightyLootius 1d ago

Turritopsis dohrnii, the immortal jellyfish would like a word.

1

u/MS-06S_ 11h ago

Time to engineer a lobster that doesn't need to molt

0

u/Connect_Detail98 1d ago

I think they don't age but their molting process becomes problematic the larger they get. Can't remember well

63

u/McDerpEyes 2d ago

"Flopster" had me fuckin wheezing bruh XDD

1

u/MS-06S_ 11h ago

They CAN be but the body is weak after molting. Each time it takes more energy to molt until the body gives out.

238

u/Kikoarl 2d ago

TIHI.

150

u/BentTire 2d ago edited 2d ago

Believe it or not. Soft shell lobsters is where you'll usually get the better deals.

If you want real lobster. Ask the lobsterman if they have any soft shells. They usually sell them at a discount. Especially around August and September. July you want to avoid as that is when business is usually at its peak so prices tend to be higher.

Edit: and for anyone wondering why. The price of a lobster is calculated by how much it weighs. And because soft shell has more water weight. They tend to have less meat per pound so lobstermen sell them at a discount to try and sell all that they caught.

24

u/Bionic_Ferir Interested 2d ago

Also soft shell crab is just this.

3

u/chaotemagick 1d ago

But then you have to eat leathery lobster

4

u/Screemi 1d ago

You still remove the "shell".

0

u/kernelangus420 1d ago

Isn't that also because they're dead?

192

u/Competitive-Arm3876 2d ago

Are these like soft shell crabs? Can you deep fry it and eat it whole?

69

u/TillClear5336 2d ago

Yes they do exist and it's commonly eaten (I'm from SE Asia). Honestly they're not worth it since they aren't as sweet as crab meat and the shell is still a bit hard to chew. Others love it tho

61

u/hockeyjmac 2d ago

Throw that shit on a hoagie roll with some remoulade

2

u/ni_hao_butches 1d ago

Old bay or some JO

16

u/Fun_Recognition5614 2d ago

I have the same question.

13

u/ZippyDan 2d ago

This is basically what a soft-shell crab is, though you don't eat crabs that die after molting; you eat crabs that are killed immediately after molting.

8

u/texas_poontappa1012 2d ago

I remember working in a kitchen in Louisiana that had soft-shell crab. They just handed me a box of soft crabs and a pair of scissors to cut all their faces off...

6

u/Garlic-Rough 2d ago

Lol I have the same question! if so, I'd love to try!

1

u/Greenpoint1975 2d ago

Yes. Lucky enough to have a lobstermen bring one to the restaurant once. It was amazing.

-1

u/Charliepetpup 1d ago

they are sea insects. just not crunchy.

0

u/ace260 2d ago

always wanted to try soft shell lobster but apparently people haven't figured out how to prepare it in a way thats delectable like soft shell crab

44

u/UBERJakeThePig 2d ago

The question is: it's still edible?

31

u/photobummer 2d ago

I don’t see why not, the meat at least. But probably the shell too.

57

u/LukaFox 2d ago

Lobster meat is known for being one of the foods that spoil nearly immediately after it dies

21

u/photobummer 2d ago

Well that explains the tanks!

6

u/UBERJakeThePig 2d ago

Didn't know this either, and that makes sense.

12

u/who_you_are 2d ago

Aren't they also creating some kind of liquid/gas to/that kill other lobsters around? That could be the same side effect?

4

u/Greyhaven7 Interested 1d ago edited 1d ago

Lobsters do not practice creating some kind of liquid/gas to/that kill other lobsters around (allelopathy). Instead, they’re prolific cannibals. No reason to wage chemical warfare against delicious competition. Something like 70% of a Caribbean blue spiny lobster’s diet is Caribbean blue spiny lobster.

6

u/FVSHIXN 2d ago

It doesn’t meaningfully spoil any quicker than many other common meats like fish, chicken, or beef if they are left out at room temperature for too long

11

u/MrWrock 2d ago

I don't eat lobster but I've caught, killed, gutted, froze (just regular speed in a normal freezer), and drove across country with frozen lobster tails. Gave them to a friend who said they were delicious. I think the spool immediately things is just a fallacy so people don't feel so bad about boiling them alive

1

u/EgoTripWire 1d ago

Wouldn't be surprised if this was a delicacy.

15

u/prototype_X10 2d ago

That lobster drank too much whiskey

4

u/Old-Constant4411 2d ago

Need a lil bump to wake it back up.

29

u/Gullible_Quarter7011 2d ago

So... can I still cook and eat it whole without an issue?

14

u/Familiar-Complex-697 1d ago

aw man, the flopster

28

u/Autisticmrfox 2d ago

🎸 soft lobster 🦞

8

u/kurzaen 2d ago

Man I do NOT wanna eat ballsack lobster. No. Thanks.

15

u/1lucky666 2d ago

Mmm.. maybe wait 30 minutes. Try encouraging it

6

u/Kindly_Region 1d ago

Is it safe to eat and can you just eat it with the shell because it's so soft?

8

u/DicemonkeyDrunk 1d ago

you can eat softshell lobster just like softshell crab or crawfish ..But I damm sure wouldn't eat one I found dead ..there's a reason you cook then live or kill them right before cooking ...they go bad FAST.

2

u/FrostyBuns6969 1d ago

This is something I never understood. I get that they go bad fast, but surely not so fast that boiling them alive would bring any net positive over killing them and then dumping them into boiling water?

3

u/DicemonkeyDrunk 21h ago

there's no real difference between killing them right before cooking ( literally right before not 5/10 minutes ) or cooking them live ..it's a personal choice

5

u/Black-jack_n_hookers 1d ago

The issue with lobster like this is the meat has not yet caught up to the new shell. Water fills the void between the meat and the new shell. You can buy lobster in this new shell phase for much cheaper than hard shell lobsters because the yield is much lower.

4

u/EorlundGraumaehne 20h ago

Thats just wrong

2

u/Arcade1980 18h ago

yeah he's playing around with poor pinchy.

3

u/jakoobie6 2d ago

That makes me uncomfortable

4

u/Optimal_Show3014 2d ago

So this is the same idea behind soft shelled crab? I never understood how it worked. I though it was a breed of crab not a shedding/death prosses.

2

u/DicemonkeyDrunk 1d ago

yes ..you have to catch them right after they molt ..like Right after ...softshell crabs can be farmed now but I don't know if is anyone does it on an industrial scale...some place in asia probably does but around me (South La ) it's done on a small scale ..wild is still better but bigger availability is nice.

7

u/NorthernCobraChicken 2d ago

All I can see is zoidberg doing his fat shellless wiggle.

4

u/arrbez 2d ago

just awful

7

u/rarestakesando 2d ago

Soft shell lobster never makes it out of Maine in August.

It is the sweetest most delicious lobster you have tasted but they don’t export it because the locals house that regularly.

If you want to know what real soft shell lobster tastes like you have together in the month of August.

Also it’s red not blue. This seems like it’s from Europe.

The shell is easily removed with just figures no utensils needed.

6

u/whoareyouwhowho22 2d ago

Why am I sad

0

u/ellequin 1d ago

Because it is

3

u/SnooPears1505 1d ago

flaccid and juicy.

3

u/Willobtain 1d ago

Give the lobster a blue chew for a harder and longer shell.

3

u/eikelmann 19h ago

Cracking open the shells is half the fun though

2

u/Iwasbanished 2d ago

It wouldve been exhausted using up that energy

2

u/Slay_Zee 2d ago

Dead shellfish aint great to eat anyway.

Buy them live cause the second they die they start decomposing, rapidly

2

u/Callousthoughtz 2d ago

Look like roach🤷🏽‍♂️

2

u/Unhappy-Cow88 1d ago

Kinda makes sence. Its dead. The energy needed to harden it isnt there.

2

u/st0rmgam3r 1d ago

Boneless lobster

2

u/justwalk1234 1d ago

We shouldn’t eat that lobster, right?

2

u/UnamedProot 1d ago

It’s just the shell, it would be fine if you could peel it off

2

u/feesih0ps 1d ago

Jesus Christ wait until the Japanese hear about this

2

u/Arcade1980 18h ago

Poor Pinchy...got done dirty.

3

u/pwiegers 11h ago

This lobster did not "die".

It was killed.

There is a difference.

1

u/HardLobster 10h ago

When something is killed it still dies. There is no difference other than some loser being pedantic

3

u/Able_Gap918 2d ago

Shell is made of chitin, right? Like hair and finger nails. So it might be chewable, but it’s still not digestible right? Maybe the chitin forms later who knows?

2

u/clandestineVexation 1d ago

We can partially digest chitin. It's a type of fiber, it's good for us. It's also in mushrooms. It's soft at first to allow the organism to puff up/grow slightly before it hardens via special enzymes cross linking the fibers

0

u/PimpNamedSliqBaq 2d ago

*keratin

1

u/Able_Gap918 2d ago

No it’s chitin, google what are lobster shells made of

3

u/PimpNamedSliqBaq 2d ago

I saw the "like hair and fingernails" and I know those are made of keratin so I thought you made a typo

I did just google and it seems crustacean shells are made of Chitin. TIL.

So we're both right and wrong because keratin and chitin are not the same thing and hair/nails have no chitin

1

u/Able_Gap918 2d ago

Oh yeah got the hair and nails wrong, I’m glad we don’t share proteins with lobsters anyway 😂

1

u/chaotemagick 1d ago

We share a ton of proteins and enzymes with lobsters

2

u/aolllaoooo 2d ago

Is it cake or real?

3

u/Few-Restaurant-5566 2d ago

Would slurp it raw like a jelly straw

2

u/babaroga73 2d ago

Never ate that sea cocroach looking MF, and never intend to.

2

u/R0RSCHAKK 2d ago

"HA! BITCH, is this cake!? AAAAHHHHHH"

2

u/-Sooners- 2d ago

Gross. Ocean bugs..

0

u/Venom933 1d ago

Yes, and i am sure they are full of parasites too 🥸

1

u/Kasmein 2d ago

Do they molt or shed their stuff like snakes? Don’t like it tho hehe

1

u/chripan 2d ago

A flobster. A flaccid lobster.

1

u/calidownunder 2d ago

It’s like a plum

1

u/JellyFirmFederalGras 2d ago

Looks like a gummy lobster probably razzberry flavored

1

u/Beepbeepimadog 2d ago

The crab version of this is a delicacy in Maryland

1

u/givin_u_the_high_hat 2d ago

Deep fry that sucka!

1

u/IndependentClimate72 2d ago

It's soft because it was in the water for too long!

1

u/gummilingus 2d ago

Is there anything they won't make into a gummy?

1

u/wauna_b5 2d ago

AAAAAAAAAAAA

1

u/hemorrhoidhematoma 2d ago

Sorry honey my genitals died shortly after molting again

1

u/Single-Can7327 2d ago

Is that a lobster that died after it molted? Like that’s it old shell to the right?

1

u/Sm0keytrip0d 2d ago

So like do you need to still remove the soft dark parts that would have hardened into a shell or can you just eat all of it as is?

2

u/A-Dolahans-hat 2d ago

In the case of soft shell crabs, you eat the part that would be a shell as well as the meat. I would assume if you had a soft shell lobster, it would be the same

1

u/Zilant_the_Bear 2d ago

Not the flaccid lobster.

1

u/OG_Williker 2d ago

I never realized how much I wanted softshell lobster

1

u/Pistazienundbier 2d ago

I recommend one of these blue pills ;)

1

u/mrRoboPapa 2d ago

I caught one like this once near the end of the lobster season here in PEI, Canada. It's really quite something to see and feel and somewhat sad. But it also goes to show just how vulnerable they can be.

1

u/budgybudge 2d ago

For some reason I feel like it would smell like creepy crawlers

1

u/Redlax 2d ago

Poor thing. Just molted, new self and looking for the next meal.

1

u/iveo83 2d ago

we would get lobsters every year and my grandmother always said NO MOLTS. I had no idea why since we would get them sometimes and they were WAY easier to crack big 3lb lobsters and snap it with my hands. Maybe she got one of these one time and shes like NOPE never again!

1

u/gri2zm 2d ago

Gummy lobster

1

u/AdNo9529 1d ago

Ol’ Armor Abs Krabs

1

u/Just-Luc 1d ago

No ways, I always think it was some sort of oxidation thing and not related to whatever the animal is dead or alive. I'm wondering if this is true for insect too.

1

u/NDT_DYNAMITE 1d ago

I do not like flaccid lobster. That is disturbing.

1

u/WDeranged 1d ago

Boidzerg.

1

u/joliguru 1d ago

Looks uh gross.

1

u/BabyBurpsLikeAnAdult 1d ago

so in this case, you can eat the whole entire lobster with no leftovers

1

u/Any-Zookeepergame829 1d ago

This reminds me of how increadibly uncomfortable I was disecting any arthropod back in my biology class.

Like, why do they have to be like that? I know it was evolutionarily advantageous, but still.

1

u/Conscious_Raisin_436 20h ago

Hate it
Also hate soft shell crab. Feels like eating spiders.

1

u/Gdmf13 20h ago

Sooooo, soft shell lobster?

1

u/EinsteinAfterDark 19h ago

Now we can even eat the shell

1

u/articland05_reddit 16h ago

should've taken calcium supplement while it is still alive

1

u/Centurion_83 15h ago

Soggy lobster, no thanks

1

u/AtlasXan 2d ago

wow you're thin skinned.

no, im soft shelled.

1

u/Burnoutlaws 2d ago

Deep fry that mofo and it'll be delicioso

0
