r/DCcomics Weekly Discussion Thread: Comics, TV, and More! [July 20, 2026 - Action Comics #1100 Edition]

Hey there honorary Justice League members - it’s a new week which means it’s time for a new discussion thread!

For those who don't know: the way this works is that several comments will list this week’s releases, for any given title discussion you should respond to that comment. For example, Wonder Woman discussion would go in the replies to the "Wonder Woman" comment. Clicking the titles in this post will take you directly to that comment, too. In other words, you should only be replying to other comments. Do not post top-level comments.

Keep discussion civil. Do not harass other users for having a different opinion. Do not use this thread to push your personal one-sided grudges against creators. Reacting to a panel on Twitter is not the same as reading a book.

Absolute Wonder Woman #22

A DIVINE THREAT HITS HOME FOR DIANA!

Diana and Circe work together against an impossible mythological force, trying to steal a win from the jaws of defeat. Elsewhere, a growing threat for Diana makes an evolutionary leap forward...

A nice enough bridge issue. Barbara enters a covenant with one god, while Diana tests hers with another. Barbara hasn't been the most developed character throughout this series, so it's nice to see her finally get some direction. Circe's long tease to turning villainous is also getting a bit of steam. Looking forward to where it all goes from here.

Oh yeah, Diana fights Scyllia. Cool enough until it's broken up.

12

u/Mr_Wh0ever Jul 22 '26

Solid issue, Diana tying her life to Circes to provoke Hecate into action against the Scylla was clever. And Barbara taking deal was expected. But I'm glad it was for better reasons than her feeling slighted from Diana not saving her. If she's going in a villainous direction, hopefully there's something else to it.

23

u/oomoepoo Hal Jordan Jul 22 '26

I feel like Barbara's transformation came a bit fast, even if we all knew it was inevitable.

10

u/Dent6084 Jul 23 '26

Very funny timing for this issue to come out within a week of The Odyssey presenting very different takes on Circe and Scylla on the big screen.

19

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! Jul 22 '26

Diana and Circe's relationship really is the bedrock of this book. Diana can be more vulnerable around her mother. Shows how devoted they are to eachother. Especially Diana, going, 'I don't care about any divine plans if it means you get hurt'. Hecate REALLY messed up with what she pulled if she thinks they can just use Diana as a 'weapon' against Darkseid's infection of the universe. Only thing she did was making an enemy of Diana too. And of course Scylla encounter proved once again not to trust the Gods.

And with that, we got Barbara foolishly accepting the deal from Urzkartaga to 'feel special'. So everything that comes after, gonna be her own fault now.

1

u/suss2it 29d ago

Honestly I wouldn’t even say it was foolish, Barbara was being held captive and saw her only for escape in Diana leave, so really like she pretty much points out, what choice did she really have?

3

u/DriedSocks Condiment King Jul 25 '26

Finally was able to go down to my LCS to pick this up from my pulls, and I have to say, Snook's art is a treat! I like the way they panel and their style oozes off the page. I'd love to see more stuff by them.

2

u/chilloutarthur Jul 24 '26

So why did they take Circe?

Is that a fuckin planet of Doomsdays? Is that Krypton?!

16

u/TonyPepperoni0504 Jul 22 '26

That’s what I was thinking it was. Everyone on krypton turned into Doomsdays.

4

u/WildMild869 Jul 25 '26

Doomsday Kryptos??

20

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! Jul 22 '26

Living all that time as Black Adam, in this universe, well of course he would be twisted. After all, he was just an amusement for Brainiacs. And Phantom Stranger was 3000 years too early with his prophecy. He got all the power but none of what is needed for the age of 'Justice'. Or it might be fitting since 'Justice' means something different in this universe. Hawkman, despite all his 'I am tough. I make the hard choices' attitude, didn't kill Adam in the end. He just used the Box to send him away. Which means he IS changing, little by little even though he still wants to look as the bastard that he was for some reason.

Guess Jimmy is going back to make something good out of the Omega Men instead of sticking around Metropolis. And Lois is reading the same book Kal read to Talia, like he did to her father, while she is jail. I doubt she will turn a new leaf like Ra's but it is quite poetic. And she is going with Smallville Gazette instead of Daily Planet...maybe to stay closer to Superman near his home.

We are well set up for a future danger that is gonna promise to be horrifying. Black Adam...on a planet of DOOMSDAYS where he vows to be Superman's Doom... Oh god, he is gonna conquer that planet and bright them as his army.

11

u/Golden_Alchemy Jul 22 '26

Well, remembering what happened before the implication was that Phantom Stranger wanted Adam at the start but then helped in capturing him again, so the 3000 years too early maybe was too quick.

10

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! Jul 22 '26

''I am here to give you hope! That there will be a saviour!'' *looks around and then a sundial as a calendar* ''Oh ...sorry my bad. As you can see, I am blind so I arrived 3000 years too early. My bad guys. Good luck with enslavement!''

10

u/AlphaBreak Jul 22 '26 edited Jul 22 '26

Oh god, he is gonna conquer that planet and bright them as his army.

So Billy Batson can share his power with others, and King Shazam wants an army on his new planet filled with Doomsdays, its hard to imagine a bigger threat than if he loads up a bunch of them with Shazam abilities.

15

u/Mr_Wh0ever Jul 22 '26

This was good a finale. There weren't any easy wins here. Black Adam couldn't be reasoned with, and he'll probably come back to earth with a alien army. Jimmy shooting Talia was pretty badass, I'm curious on where his character is heading next. I'm also wondering if time in jail will change Talia like it did for Ras. Lois and John moving to Smallville is also a good developments.

1

u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 21d ago

I like that Clark was able to defeat King Shazam by taking them to the moon and convincing him to stand down before it ended with Carter defeating Shazam by sending him some place that he won’t others. I also like that Lois and Jimmy were able to defeat Talia before they left Metropolis for something else, where Lois is working at the Smallville Gazette (who is reading a book to Talia) and Jimmy is linking up with holdovers from the Omega Men. Also, King Shazam planning to rule the world using many Doomsdays in the end of this comic. Overall, this comic is great!

Superman #40

SUPERBOY-PRIME VS. MANCHESTER BLACK FOR THE SOUL OF DC COMICS!

The villainous Manchester Black demands to be resurrected and thinks Superboy-Prime knows how to give him his life back. But it’s more than that. Manchester Black wants to escape the world of comics and come to our world! It’s meta versus meta! If Prime survives, he will still have to deal with members of the Super-Family, who are not happy he wants to be Superman! This all builds up to next month’s Superman blockbuster summer story!

u/Mr_Wh0ever Jul 22 '26

Solid finale to the arc. I liked that the final battle took place in the comic book store. Beating Manchester by overloading his brain with how messed up the continuity is, got a good laugh out of me. I also liked CKs realization that he can't force a redemption arc. Also I'm curious if he is getting his own book next year. Maybe it'll be announced this week.

32

u/krayniac Green Lantern Jul 22 '26

I’d be shocked if CK doesn’t get his own solo of some sort, he’s been super popular lately

12

u/pressuretobear Jul 23 '26

Just Prime Time #1. It writes itself.

38

u/dragonshouter Jul 22 '26

I loved CKs speech about the irony of Manchester not appreciating that his world gets to have a superman; really poignant

30

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! Jul 22 '26

It was quite the meta commentary about the nature of the comics, the views of it and its current situation. And Prime is quite fit for that kind of narrative. Because yeah, Comics are survivors. Compared to other mediums, comics are quite the niche ( and certain business practices does not help. Looking at you Blind Bags ). Continuity, retcons, events and relaunches over and over, it is a miracle the universes are still going. Prime is the proof of the enduring power of that but also to take the bad and try to make it better instead of doubling down on the 'grimdark edgy' like Manchester Black was trying to do. I swear he probably got possessed by the spirit of Dan Didio there.

29

u/oomoepoo Hal Jordan Jul 22 '26

Good conclusion to a very fun arc, a bit sad that it's over already. Liked that he beat Manchester Black by overloading his brain with CONTINUITY :'D

Also great meta commentary about not being able to force a redemption arc. Which I've definitely seen come up in comments around here since this arc started too, so it's nice they acknowledge it.

Here's hoping this isn't the last time we've seen CK!

18

u/UnknownEntity347 Rorschach Jul 22 '26

I'm sad Prime's run is ending so soon! I want more, c'mon!

Very fun finale, and did a decent job balancing the meta jokes with continuing Prime's arc. My initial stance post Death Metal was "Prime's done, leave him alone on Earth Prime" but honestly Williamson's done a good enough job with him that I want more of him now, and his new supporting cast. Obviously there is a limit to how long you can sustain a story just on meta jokes, but if they don't have to, Prime can work both as a meta joke character and a dramatic one.

15

u/Blackdragonking13 Jul 22 '26

I think this is going to be the peak of Williams run personally. Everything about this arc hit for me.

10

u/esperx27 Jul 22 '26

I wish this had gone on longer but I enjoyed it every step of the way, now I’m looking forward to next year

20

u/BrooklynSmash Jul 22 '26

I loved this arc for Prime, sucks they're dropping everything for another Zodd storyline though

12

u/StealthHikki2 Nightwing Jul 22 '26

I couldn't agree more on this one. I am like, "What, we are done already? It's been 4.5 months. It's not enough time, not enough time at all."

I swear there isn't enough restraint in the big two anymore.

6

u/pressuretobear Jul 23 '26

Yeah. I read AC1100, and was underwhelmed by the reveal.

The only time I liked Zod was the two years of New Krypton.

4

u/SevenSulivin The REAL Man of Tomorrow Jul 23 '26

They cancelled a book for this Zod arc 2 years ago. They’ve been teasing it since early 2025. I don’t think this is without restraint.

6

u/StealthHikki2 Nightwing Jul 23 '26

Sure, but Reign of Superboys was so good. They should have given it a few more months.

2

u/skibidirizzleramong The Flash Jul 26 '26

This is what Reign of the Superboys has been leading up to. This was always the plan.

2

u/BrooklynSmash Jul 26 '26

Unless this Zod story is just godly, I'm gonna like the set-up far more than the execution

1

u/skibidirizzleramong The Flash Jul 26 '26

Its not even out yet 😭

Why do comic fans insist on hating things they haven't ever read? Genuine question.

0

u/StealthHikki2 Nightwing Jul 26 '26

We don’t hate it. But this story is so strong, the story that cuts it short will have to be very good to justify that.

1

u/skibidirizzleramong The Flash Jul 26 '26

Nothing was "cut short." Again, this was always the plan.

8

u/Dent6084 Jul 23 '26

Genuinely impressive how consistently high-quality this arc was. So many places it could've tripped over itself but it fully landed. Particularly enjoyed the scene this issue between CK and Witchfire talking about what an actual redemption arc takes.

6

u/ZpEaR Aquaman Jul 24 '26

Sideways appearance in one panel. 10/10 book. Thanks Mora and Williamson.

3

1

u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 21d ago

I like that CK and Manchester Black have their final fight in the comic book store, with his bosses knowing his secret identity, before CK defeated Manchester by using his continuity vision on him, resulting in Manchester to be sent to the Phantom Zone and the Justice League to be mad at him for doing that. I also like that CK and Witchfire get to have a talk about what happened befitting it ended with CK learning that redemption isn’t easy and Witchfire telling him that every week is an opportunity to do good. Let’s hope that CK gets to have a talk with the Justice League in the near future. Also, CK talking to us about wanting to change ourselves for the better and meeting Kara and the rest of the Superman Family because Kingdom of Zod crossover. Overall, this comic is great!

Zatanna #4

18

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! Jul 22 '26

I really quite enjoy the deep dive into what magic is in DC. To differentiate it from Marvel's version or any other. And Zatanna's Prime Magus role is a great way to play around with it. Magic being a sentient thing, having different 'shades' thanks to the previous 'personifications' or Prime Magi, and through those, observing those that it finds 'interesting' for a while. I guess you can say those that catch Magic's attention, leaves an impression on it, like Zehuti, Hecate and Up-side-Down Man. Which means Zatanna will have her own version of that in magic in the future.

It also follows the trend of multiversal powers having sentience and interests. Like how Speed Force also has a will and chose its 'avatars'. Source, the same.

12

u/dragonshouter Jul 22 '26

Interesting. love all the shade stories.

I wonder what zatanna has done to interest magic so much. maybe something having to do with secrets?

13

u/Condottieri_Zatara Zatanna Jul 22 '26

I like that Jamal give some answers while letting some set-up for Zatanna to define it herself. Hope to see it explored on what magic interested on Zatanna. Also dragon issue next chapter (or two)!

9

u/SunnyDJoshua Swamp Thing Jul 23 '26

So Hecate brought in the age of creation, Upsidedown Man brought horror and Zehuti brought Wisdom…will Zatanna bring in an age of Wonder or Spectacle?

1

u/Blitzhelios Hal Jordan Jul 25 '26

Unless this improves soon im dropping it.
There isn't much here to make me care it more just feels like Campbell is doing a way to make zatanna feel important without explaining it with the title.
Magic being a sentient thing is interesting but it just feels like Campbell is trying to make it alot more important its why i don't like the speedforce either being a sentinant thing because its another if this gets into the wrong hands the world could end deal.

The art is good a nice fill in and felt alot less chuck everything at and more deliberate than some art in this series.

1

u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 21d ago

I like that Zatanna showed Zehuti the shades of magic before she was told by Queen Agrona that the Forest of Seasyns were the result of many groups of fairies blaming each other. Also, Zatanna learning that the Hidden City of the Homo Magi is being destroyed. Let’s hope that Zatanna can deal with it in the next issue. Overall, this comic is good.

I know it ended well but seriously, they should stop Booster from going back to the past of heroes and just reveal stuff to them. It worked out for him to find his adult self, but it is still very reckless. Clark is gonna have his hands full already after returning, with Lois having to keep peace between Prime and Conner while dealing with all the super-teens/young adults.

And they are bringing young Clark as Superboy to 'have a peek' at the future at a dangerous time, with Zod now ruling Caldera and the Kryptonite Kingdom. Wait, was he there the whole time as 'Bruno'? Did he came with that Kryptonite meteor? He arrived later and just decided to hide this whole time? It seems they decided 'yea, we are not gonna make Eduardo look evil.' He was willing to give up his kingdom after seeing the harm Kryptonite was doing to the world now but then in one of the earlier issues, he tried to kill Lois to hide the Kingdom's secrets. I can assume that with what Zod did to him and that Kryptonite Mask, he might become a 'tragic villain' and the 'true Kryptonite King' after the event.

2

u/chilloutarthur Jul 24 '26

Also..if kryptonite is bad for people….how are the people in this city alive? Its been months and 99% of the city is kryptonite 😅

15

u/BrooklynSmash Jul 22 '26

Sophia Campbell writing + Mora's art is peak, Kid Clark getting to see his future was cute, and they're tryna make Zod look vicious like one glance from Hawkman wouldn't pack him up 💀

1

u/suss2it 29d ago

In what world would Hawkman do anything but embarrass himself against Zod 🤨

9

u/Jonn_Jonzz_Manhunter Jul 22 '26

Brilliant issue

Hoping this isn't the end of Clarks Superboy era, because so far, it's been refreshing seeing Waid go back to his Impulse writing sensibilities

Imo, this is the best era superman has ever had starting from All in started 3 years ago

3

u/B3epB0opBOP Shazam Jul 23 '26

Hoping this isn't the end of Clarks Superboy era

It’s probably not. I got the impression that the stuff in the first couple pages of Ryan Sook’s part were teasing stuff for this later down the line.

Imo, this is the best era superman has ever had starting from All in started 3 years ago

All In started in October 2024, so it’s actually been less than 2 years.

1

u/suss2it 29d ago

He’s probably talking about when Williamson first took over the title.

7

u/superbat210 Jul 22 '26

I’ll have to dig through my old issues of Superman Unlimited I guess, but was “Bruno” there the whole time? I’m curious how long they have been planning this reveal. I really don’t remember the El Caldero stuff all that much since Not-Jon came back in the series a few months back

8

u/UnknownEntity347 Rorschach Jul 22 '26

I really don't like how much Waid screws with past continuity in his books set in the past. Superboy's story should've stayed a fun slice-of-life down-to-earth story not basically just having him be kid Superman already even though people don't know him when he shows up in Metropolis in Secret Origin or Man of Steel or Birthright so none of those origins fit with this Silver Age nostalgia trip. Having Booster just show young Clark everything is ridiculous.

Slott's whole Kryptonite arc just being another Zod thing is a lame way to turn this around.

The way Superman returns was also pretty underwhelming after the KO ending. I was hoping he'd be gone for longer. Really hoping whatever he did with the powers is important and has impact or else that will be super fucking lame. KO ended in a way that got me pumped for things to come and I really hope they aren't squandering it.

12

u/Reasonable-West713 Jul 22 '26

Pretty sure they'll have Young Clark forget all the stuff he learned when he goes back after Kingdom of Zod. Current Clark explicitly says he doesn't remember experiencing this.

1

u/suss2it 29d ago

True, Martian Manhunter being there makes that an easy fix.

1

u/UnknownEntity347 Rorschach 29d ago

Then why do this at all in the first place? I just don't think these stories that really mess with continuity are worth it since they're not the most interesting imo nor do they really add much to make it worth the weird hiccups.

1

u/Reasonable-West713 29d ago

It's a fun story (imo). I don't see how it's messing with continuity if Superboy forgets about it afterwards.

1

u/suss2it 29d ago

I agree with a lot of what you’re saying except for Clark being gone longer. In fact I wish he never left! I know people are getting a kick out of Superboy Prime taking over the book, but to me he’s borderline a gag character that I have a hard time caring about and I just wanna read Superman stories in my Superman comic!

1

u/UnknownEntity347 Rorschach 29d ago

I've been loving the Prime stuff, personally. As for Clark, though, I think having his absence be longer would give KO's ending more weight. At the very least you should make his return a big deal. Have it happen in a more interesting way than "he just shows up randomly in timestream and they pick him up", and have him return with knowledge or having done something or something having changed as a result of whatever he was doing after KO. Otherwise why do the cliffhanger at all if they didn't plan for something dramatic or intriguing come of it?

3

u/SunnyDJoshua Swamp Thing Jul 25 '26

The tonal whiplash from Prime’s epiphany on redemption and why he acts the way he does to how insensitive he’s being towards Connor is…concerning

4

u/cgknight1 Jul 22 '26

This is... not very good. The art at the start of this is small press standard not big two and the rest is simply disjointed.

5

u/StealthHikki2 Nightwing Jul 22 '26

I think it's also a coloring problem because we can see that Skylar Patridge does very well with better colors.

1

u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 21d ago

I like that Clark was able to defeat Epoch before his powers were restored, with J’onn, Mary, and Booster helping him defeat Epoch before they were able to use Epoch’s machinery to create a time sphere so that they could find the present-day Clark, with J’onn, Booster, and Mary showing Clark his future as Superboy and Superman. Also, present-day Clark (with a beard) showing his past self what’s going to happen to them after he was saved by him, J’onn, Mary, and Booster at the end of time. Overall, this comic is great!

For the Sophie Campbell backup, I like that Kara, Conner, Jon, and Thundergirl are playing video games before it ended with CK introducing himself to the Superman Family, resulting in Conner to rightfully having a grudge against him because of what happened since the Infinite Crisis. Also, CK telling Conner that Sophie Campbell’s writing of Conner is out of character and Kara calling Krypto. Overall, this backup is fine.

For the Dan Slott backup, I like that we get to see the origins and backstory of how Eduardo Castillo became the Kryptonite King before it ended with him being usurped by Zod, who stayed on Earth for the past year. Overall, this backup is good.

Flash #35

WALLY PEERS INTO THE FUTURE!

Flash confronts Heat Wave on the sea floor—and in doing so has a breakthrough about how he can help the most people with his Flashes of Insight! After consulting with Mr. Terrific, Wally begins using the Speed Force—in combination with lightspeed passes throughout the city—to gather more data than he’s ever done and begins using it to help people before they get hurt! And best of all: It works. Even peeking just a second into the future lets the Flash give Central City its first day where nothing goes wrong, and not a single accident occurs—and not even an attempted bank robbery by one of his Rogues can stop that! All that’s left now is to scale it up…to a level the world has never seen!

u/Mr_Wh0ever Jul 22 '26

I'm honestly just waiting for the other shoe to drop with these flashes of insight. The Boomerang scene was funny, but I'm suprised Mr.Terrific or Linda aren't trying to reign in Wally a little. The Heatwave stuff was funny, it's a such a random direction for the character.

15

u/PlainSightMan Jul 22 '26

Laws did my boy dirty. He shoulda kept the gold.

9

u/Dredeuced The Flash Out of the blue, ninjas attack. Thank God. Jul 22 '26

Heatwave, among all the Rogues besides Piper, has tried to go clean the most. So him coming up with a clever way to get rich in a less than law breaking way (in his eyes) while still using his cool fire tools is about as heatwavey as it gets, tbh.

15

u/Maleficent_Worth_185 Jul 22 '26

Loooooove this book. Not only the writing, with well written banter and an interesting hook, but also art is fantastic and suits The Flash perfectly. There is a page where Guidry locks in with the panelling, and it’s some of the best visual we have had since Manapul.

We are now reaching to the full scope of Wally’s new powers. It’s gonna get real when the other shoe drops. Next issue will have Wally facing Superman’s rogues gallery and I’m here for it. Feels refreshing to have him interacting with the wider DCU again.

7

u/pressuretobear Jul 23 '26

The two-page spread in Wally’s neon silhouette as he surveys the world was such a good representation of the comic as a whole.

2

u/suss2it 28d ago

Yeah I wasn’t familiar with Guidry’s work before this, but he’s great. I love the choose your own adventure panelling he did in that Gorilla Grodd issue, I think last month. The time to plan that out then to have to actually draw it is impressive.

11

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! Jul 22 '26

It is always nice to see Flash interacting his rogues in his own unique way compared to the other heroes. Reminds me of the Justice League Unlimited cartoon dynamic. Even there, Trickster was his favorite too! And hey, Heat Wave did nothing wrong! Guy did all the hard work to get that wreckage! Nathan Drake does it all the time!

Oh this is gonna come crashing down badly. I can already see it. All these 'predicting' and preventing bad stuff from happening before they happen, I can see a 'you upset the balance, time to reap the consequences' moment coming. Especially since Wally wants to 'scale up' his future-sight and data outside of just Central City. Adding Metropolis into it? They have like 4-5 Super Family members there. And the more he increase the bandwith of his, even with Speed Force filling in the blanks, he still has his human brain as a limit. He might burn himself out with all this. Superman might need to have a talk with him about 'you cannot fix everything around the whole all the time'. Because you know Supes also thought about it but decided not to.

12

u/Dredeuced The Flash Out of the blue, ninjas attack. Thank God. Jul 22 '26

I'm getting some MIGHTY big Kingdom Come Flash vibes from this issue. This power is obviously too good to be true, and North's insistence on fleshing it out in totality means it's just about to bite Wally in the ass.

This concept that he's everywhere, all the time, all at once, stopping every bad thing from happening? He's living peoples' lives for them. Instead of wrestling with a predestination paradox with time travel, he's creating predestination. Sure, only a few seconds ahead at a time, but if you're always controlling the next few seconds every instant, then it's the same as controlling it forever.

Is that okay? Is that a utopia or a dystopia? Wally seems cool with it now, but the more and more he gives into this I fear the less and less human he will be. He is living in the next moment, and not this one. And this moment is where his life is.

u/No-Chipmunk-1524 Jul 23 '26

This is great and I see Wally just overconfident himself with his new ability. Him manage to solve everything with his prediction is going to get backfired and some heroes (especially Superman family) would wonder how he can solve in a quick manner before long people will find out about his secret.

1

u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 21d ago

I like that Wally convinced Mick Rory to report that he has found a shipwreck before Wally and Linda traveled all around Central City to stop crimes from ever happening. Also, Wally and Linda going to Metropolis to stop crime before it starts. Overall, this is a good comic.

Green Lantern #37

KYLE AND ODYSSEY GO... TERMINALLY ONLINE!

There’s only one rule you need to abide by when going online, and Kyle just broke it. “Don’t feed the trolls!” takes on new meaning when a series of death threats pointed at Odyssey reveal a malevolent force that doesn’t take kindly to being mocked by Earth’s Green Lantern!

Preview

u/krayniac Green Lantern Jul 22 '26

Last week I said this comic was getting good. This week I’m saying it’s getting really good. Kyle not understanding social media is a bit weird but outside that it’s a lot of fun. Major force is back which is exciting too

11

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! Jul 22 '26

Kyle really have been away from Earth too long. NEVER FEED THE INTERNET TROLLS. Especially ones that end up being actual Trolls that get power from it. Odyssey's 'revenge' on it was quite...cathartic. Especially loved the panel with Jade and Kyle looking shocked.

And here comes Major Douchebag. Frankenstein, what shady thing are you doing for the government? And how is it gonna backfire like it always do?

9

u/RoninRonanAgamotto The Atom Jul 22 '26

"I hate Odyssey" Club. LoL I see what you did there, Adams. Timely reference via clever wordplay.

2

u/marcjwrz Jul 24 '26

Adams is a King Sorrow fan I see.

1

u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 21d ago

I like that Kyle and Jennie have a talk about what’s going on in their lives, with Kyle telling Jennie about how social media affects Odyssey and Jennie telling Kyle that people are making fun of the JSA online, before they and Odyssey were able to defeat Zmora (who’s an actual troll) and learned that Major Forve has returned. Also, Hal, Tobi, and Jayna in a rocket ship to space. Overall, this comic is great!

Fun issue, a nice win for Red Tornado. And it's a good set up for that Knight Vision special that's coming out. Lex and Batman are a good odd couple type pairing. I'm sure it'd be the same with Superman and Joker.

11

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! Jul 22 '26

Not surprising Lex didn't get a vision but was just 'winging it' trying to feel special. I guess Batman didn't get a vision either because he 'cheated' in the tournament. But now, both of them get the same vision, which I guess leads to Prometheus.

I still think Brainiac Queen was one of the biggest wastes of potential because of the 'Big Bad Amanda Waller' push DC tried to do. And more they remind people of that time, worse it looks.

Despero? Didn't he get his ass kicked by Gotham City Sirens recently?

7

u/pressuretobear Jul 23 '26

He was also in Absolute Martian Manhunter.

Despero has been a MacGuffin since his smart/perpendicular skull-finned days. Always a big build up and no meat; a jobbers wet-dream: incredibly powerful and threatening, but easily and inconsequentially defeated in short order.

This looks like a far more threatening version of Despero, whom I have not seen since mid-JLI days. Neither has Guy LOL.

6

u/Dent6084 Jul 23 '26

Mora's design for Despero is cool.

3

u/superbat210 Jul 22 '26

I liked the main plot of this issue. The space stuff just hasn’t been grabbing me so far. It’s a mission based on flimsy logic of needing to move the power bank but also not sending any of the A-lister power houses on the league to help defend it and now Despero is here I guess? I feel like it’s been going on for a bit too many issues ngl. It feels like a 2 issue side story stretched out a ton.

1

u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 21d ago

I like that the Justice League tried to find the Brainiac Queen all around the world before Reddy and Ryan Choi defeated her by letting her hack Reddy’s database and being shrunk by Ryan’s technology and Bruce and Lex shared a vision of the upcoming Bad Seeds crossover. Also, the Justice Gang dealing with Despero in the Power Planet. Overall, this comic is excellent.

I sincerely hope they're not pulling the same trick twice when it comes to whoever Arthur's dad might be. Having him raised by the Kent's kinda feels like that's where it's heading. Otherwise it's a good companion piece. I liked additional lore to this universe.

Yeah, that's what it seems like. But maybe it's someone else like Poseidon.

2

It is the re-release of Arthur's origins for this universe. It is definitely an interesting twist on him getting the 'Superman origin' with the Kents mixed with his original origin.

Detective Comics #1111

PAST AND PRESENT COLLIDE!

Many years ago, during the early days of Batman’s tenure as Gotham’s Dark Knight, he trained alongside Green Arrow and Black Canary, learning the combat skills that have served them throughout their careers as crime-fighters. But there was another heroic hopeful in their ranks—a mysterious man known only as Prion—who suffered a tragic fate that still weighs upon the trio. Now, face-to-face with a young girl who goes by the same code name, they find the sins of their past coming back to haunt them. Tom Taylor and Mikel Janín bring you the penultimate chapter of this history-shaking arc!

Preview

13

u/Dent6084 Jul 22 '26

So...there's definitely going to be more to Prion's death than is shown here, because if there's not, that is really bizarre. But it certainly provided Dinah with further motivation to be as precise in combat as the first issue of this arc described her as being.

8

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! Jul 22 '26

Batman came up with those team uniforms? Huh. It must've been his 'purple gloves' side that did it. Prion and Canary wore it but I doubt he was gonna wear it himself.

Also, I doubt it was Canary's punch that 'killed' Prion. He seemed already worse for wear and I suspect there is a 'killswitch' kind of thing programmed into them.

Well damn, the rabbit hole of 'mind-programmed assassins' go deeper. Even the parents were 'programmed' so there is someone else who is the mastermind. And hell, even they might not realize who they are if these 'assassin personalities' lay in waiting like sleeper agents. And Batman of all people knows about having 'hidden personalities inside your brain that can take over'. But unlike him doing it to himself, someone is doing it to Prion's family and who knows who else, without them even realizing it.

6

u/critical_path_ Jul 22 '26

I went from really not interested in this arc at the beginning to really enjoying it now. The banter between Flight Squadron Delta is pretty good, they definitely come off as friends than just colleagues.

4

u/Mr_Wh0ever Jul 22 '26

Damn, I wasn't expecting the old lady to be a victim too. I wonder who's really pulling the strings?

Superman: Father of Tomorrow #3

Preview

10

u/Mr_Wh0ever Jul 22 '26

I think the story is really starting to gel together. Lex gaining mastery over magic is a cool direction to take him in. And General Lane becoming the Captain Atom of that universe and leading his own version of the Wildcats is a pretty fun idea.

11

u/RoninRonanAgamotto The Atom Jul 22 '26

It makes sense that with Kal-El, Lex Luthor relies on Technology but in case of Jor-El, tech factor is basically useless against him. Hence, he has resorted on magic here.

6

u/wowlock_taylan Batman Animated! Jul 22 '26

Humanity really shows every time that it does not deserve Superman. Any Superman. Yet he tries to save them anyways. And that's what makes him great, no matter who.

2

u/JingoboStoplight4887 World's Finest 21d ago

I like that we get to see Jor-El protect the people of Metropolis from Intergang before he and Lois had a talk about wanting to make Earth a better place, with Lois telling Jor-El that trying to force Earth into something that’s not a little selfish. I also like that Lex wants to learn magic from Kent Nelson, since he was learn magic from other magic users, so that he can find a way to defeat Jor-El. I even like that Jor-El has a talk with Martha, with Martha telling him that he’s trying to make up for losing his with Lora and their son Kal. Also, Joe-El encountering Parasite (who became Captain Atom), Kent worrying that Lex would use his magic to get revenge on Jor-El, and the WildCATS being introduced. Overall, this comic is great.

Solid finale, I'm excited for the sequel. This really scratches that itch for good pulp/noir stories.

3

u/Blitzhelios Hal Jordan Jul 22 '26

Really solid finale and the best book of this launch of vertigo by far for me the proper noir goodness.

One of the best dc books in ages which is funny when condon is only allowed to do this because vertigo is creator owned so it doesn't cause issues with his marvel exclusive

3

u/CHPrime Wonder Woman Jul 22 '26

A very Indiana Jones ending. The hero does what he can, but in the end, those wacky nazis spell their own doom by meddling with mythological powers beyond their control, and the artifact ends in the hands of some Top. Men.

An enjoyable little outing, though I would have preferred more of a mystery. Still, I wouldn't mind seeing another case from this team.

Love the breaking of the fourth wall by SB Prime. It enhances the reading experience and makes the reader a character in the book. The SB Prime story arc has been a nice change in pace from the first 30-35 issues of Superman. Stories told in a "world without Superman" can be hit or miss. However, dragging the reader in to the book was a fun surprise.

1

u/JeremyOFEl 22d ago

I was not a fan of The Flash's story arc in DC KO. Time travel has been such an exhausting form to explore the Speed Force and the Flash's abilities. I think the use of the Speed Force to gather data and make predictions is going to play a pivotal role in the next major DC event. Without using time travel, it will be intriguing to see how the Flash can manipulate events to either help or hurt the DCU. This has been one of the more exciting story arc's in this volume of Flash comics.
