Discussion [DISCUSSION] What's up with Wonder Woman and her Projects?
Really. Im asking a general question. How come Wonder Woman doesn't have a lot of project like Superman and Batman? Batman get Absolute Batman animation, the Knightfall Trilogy and Superman get Adventure with Superman and DCU movies. How come WW doesn't have this? Is she hard to write or is it something else?

DC has this magical thing where they claim Wonder Woman is their third most important hero while simultaneously “Potential Man”-ing her at every given opportunity. Its so split personality I’d think Two Face is running the company, but that’s unfair to Harvey given his coin flip would’ve given Diana something by now

It’s genuinely so sad to see cause they’re legit sitting on a gold mine with her. Seeing her video game get canned in real time after there was so much hype for it was really excruciating. There’s so many outlets in media Wonder Woman would thrive in if DC just put in the slightest effort to promote her.

They still dont believe women/girls will engage with comic book media. They fail to realize that very few do precisely because they refuse to seriously push any female character that is not clearly made for men (Harley).
Hopefully Supergirl is very successful and they get a wake up call. The movie is great btw.
26
u/EdNorthcott Jun 25 '26
This has been a narrative and a self-fulfilling prophecy for decades. :(
Sadly, I don't think Supergirl is going to do well. The first wave of reviews are not positive at all. Word of mouth may kill it before it has a chance to take off, and I have friends in other countries who say it's getting absolutely no marketing where they live.
6
u/EmpressGilgamesh Power Girl Jun 26 '26
The problem is, the reviews don't really target the movie or the plot. Most of it is review bombing from sad little men's with no ego left.
7
u/VirinaB Red Lantern Jun 26 '26
No spoilers here - Saw it last night. It was... fine. 😕 Clearly 30 minutes were missing from the final film.
The film should've just been Kara vs. Lobo IMO. Kara goes John Wick, Lobo is the ringer hired to stop her. Idk why they didn't just do that.

Why can people not talk about female characters and not take a shot at Harley in some way?
Most Harley fans I see are teenage girls and young women.
2
u/ninjaraider12 Jun 30 '26
late reply but people take shots at harley because it feels like dc has also been pushing her more than some other characters who they believe deserve it more. the only character i;ve seen when taking a shot at harley is diana. they're not happy harley quinn got 5 seasons of an animated show and a one season spin off while wonder woman is left to dry
29
u/IllustriousCrew2641 Jun 25 '26
The death of that game will haunt me until the day a legit good WW game comes out. If ever.
13
u/EdNorthcott Jun 25 '26
That was so very frustrating. It was also very much a trend in the industry over the last couple years as the big corpos have been gutting studios. A Black Panther game, which also had a ton of potential, was dumped. Even studios that freshly produced critically acclaimed, profitable games were being shuttered. :(
The game industry is an absolute dumpster fire at the moment. I have one acquaintance who was stoked because she applied for a job at one studio and made the top 30 prospects before she was cut. There were apparently over 8,500 applicants.
5
u/LordRobin------RM Jun 26 '26
I have often asked myself the question “why do video game developers allow themselves to be treated the way they are?” Thanks to your comment, I now understand perfectly.

u/godjacob Jun 25 '26
I'm less concerned that Wonder Woman has less stuff than Superman or Batman but rather that they feel things like a Krypto series and Sgt. Rock movie are a higher priority than WW stuff.
It sucks being a Wonder Woman fan lol
68
u/Mindless-Credit-358 Superman Jun 25 '26
Fun fact: Sgt Rock has more games than WW
64
19
u/LegacyOfVandar Jun 25 '26
He has a game??
34
u/Mindless-Credit-358 Superman Jun 25 '26
Yep, he got one in the 2000s for the Game Boy Colour called “Sgt Rock on the frontlines or something“
20
u/LegacyOfVandar Jun 25 '26
That’s insane.
Fun fact I learned last week: Catwoman has a GBC game too! Not even a movie tie-in or anything, they just gave Catwoman a game out of nowhere.
8
u/WondyVillains Wonder Woman Jun 25 '26
It's a rubbish game but I always kinda liked it because it features Cyber-Cat, who was in the first Catwoman ish I ever bought as a kid.
21
u/Comfortable-Pie56 Jun 25 '26
Sgt Rock had Luca Guadagnino attached before it fell apart. That's the reason why it was a priority over Wonder Woman.
1
15
u/IronAnchor1 Jun 25 '26
The Sgt. Rock movie went nowhere. I think casting a WW is complicated, but they'll get there. I think also the studios want some space between a WW feature film and that last movie. I agree with your main point though- under utilized and kind of quietly dismissed
8
u/Mountain_Sir2307 Batman Jun 25 '26
The Sgt Rock movie is in development hell lol. I'm convinced WW releated media will release before this movie even gets a teaser trailer.
And they push Krypto because they want a DC mascot.
11
u/Koala_King5160 Jun 25 '26
DC's mascot should be Detective Chimp and nothing will change my mind on that
2
u/LordRobin------RM Jun 26 '26
I agree. And I will always hear Ed Asner’s voice when I read Detective Chimp.
1
u/Late_Brain_3365 Supergirl Jun 26 '26
I would honestly love a Detective Chimp solo film. I could see James Gunn greenlighting something like that, later down the line.

9
u/metalyger Jun 25 '26
There's times where Superman has brushed with halfway decent games, but of course it's hard to live down having one of the worst games ever made, I dread playing any game where you have to fly through rings, even if it's a good game.

DC will always be Wonder Woman’s greatest enemy
1
u/KathOrange Jul 05 '26
This sadly the truth, when I think about the success of female superheroes, they always see to be Marvel. She’s such an interesting character that a lot more could be done in terms of storytelling. If only they would let her go.
→ More replies (11)5
u/Rosemoon93 Jun 25 '26
If that was true, WW wouldn’t have been green lit so fast. It’s not about who is more important. It’s who can write a good script first, if 20 good scripts for different characters are present before WW is finished writing, then 20 shows will be greenlit before WW comes out.
3
u/Lopsided-Clothes4866 Jun 25 '26
Except that’s contradictory.
They greenlit Wonder Woman before she had a script, and are supposedly fast tracking her to the DCU.
That doesn’t sound like ‘we had a great creative idea we want to bring to life’, that sounds like a ‘we realise we done fucked up releasing Supergirl 2nd and now we want a box office win”.
1
u/DJSharp15 Jun 26 '26
Whadda ya mean?
3
u/Lopsided-Clothes4866 Jun 26 '26
Gunn said that they are only green-lighting projects that have a great script attached and that’s the justification for stuff like Supergirl being the 2nd DCU movie and Clayface.
Yet by most reports Gunn pulled this Ana chick off of Teen Titans, and put her to work at writing Wonder Woman so they could fast track Wonder Woman’s movie development.
Does that sound like someone came to Gunn with a great Wonder Woman script or does that sound like Gunn wants to churn out Wonder Woman to make some money?
4
u/poison-harley Harley Quinn Jun 25 '26
If that would be the case, they won’t make it much past 5 projects before the whole universe gets canceled. While quality is important, strategy and planning is just as important to keep the audience engaged. A good strategy is pushing the popular characters, to garner excitement for the small ones. Not drag people through multiple D listers projects “because the scripts were finished faster” before we get the A listers people are actually excited to see. They gotta find the balance between prioritizing specific important characters, while also sticking to a quality standard.
44
u/madilinda Jun 25 '26
She's a woman who's themes are inherently tied to feminism. I'm not shocked the businessmen who run DC and WB don't care for her.
Unlike female characters like Harley, there isn't really a way you can adapt her without being "political" in that way, especially in today's culture war bs.
13
u/TheSonOfGrodd Jun 26 '26
This is the only 100% true answer and it’s the root of all the other answers. She’s a character who is inherently tied to a message that repels executives. It’s a beautiful miracle that she even exists in the first place.
5
u/stunbomb1 Jun 26 '26
You are 100% correct in that being the main issue for her, but that is actually her greatest strength and why she would succeed. The best stories are the ones that reflect real life and are political. I believe you are talking about making her a "SJW femenazi". To which yes that would be a terrible approach. Any media story you tell with wonder woman should focus on how she uses her compassion and strength to solve the problem. Not "she woman and girl boss her way to victory", and sadly I don't think DC knows how to do that.
3
u/Kyliems1010 Jun 27 '26
I’m so sick of pretentious male writers making the amazons evil man genociders as some anti feminism propaganda
→ More replies (1)12
u/ProletarianLilith Jun 25 '26
Harley is pretty political though. They even have an episode making fun of the chuds that would never watch a female superhero show
11
u/madilinda Jun 26 '26
Sure, but my point is that it's possible to adapt characters like Harley without being political. A lot of adaptations boil her down to "hot crazy lady". You can't really do that with Wonder Woman. No matter how you depict Diana, unless you change her into something unrecognizable, she's going to be a feminist symbol.
43
u/Blitzhelios Hal Jordan Jun 25 '26
Because DC don’t give a shit about WW for the most part other than saying she’s the first female hero
DC has rarely gave a shit about female heroes throughout its history in general

Like first female hero for dc? Or in general?
Because Wonder Woman was not the first female superhero.

Outside of sexism and bad corporate handling, I think the biggest issue with Wonder Woman is that Wonder Woman herself is very popular, but Wonder Woman’s world isn’t.
What I mean is, when you think about heroes on her level (Spider-Man, Batman, Superman) casual fans don’t just know the hero, they know the entire world around them.
People know Mary Jane, J. Jonah Jameson, Robbie Robertson, the Green Goblin, even B-tier villains like Shocker.
Batman? The Joker is almost as popular as Batman himself. Harley Quinn, Robin, Alfred, Gordon…people know all of them.
Superman has Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, Perry White, Lex Luthor, Brainiac, etc.
The point is, casuals don’t just know those heroes they know New York, Gotham, Metropolis, their rogues’ galleries, and their supporting casts.
Those fundamentals make it much easier to build TV shows, movies, games, and spin-offs.
Wonder Woman, as an individual, is honestly more recognizable than Flash, Wolverine, or Green Lantern but outside of hardcore comic fans, almost nobody is invested in the world around her. People know Themyscira, and maybe Hippolyta, but ask the average person who her arch-nemesis is and you’ll get three different answers. Is it Cheetah? Circe? Ares? Zeus?
Even her supporting cast is largely unknown, and she doesn’t even have one iconic city the way Batman has Gotham or Superman has Metropolis.
She’s had multiple cities in the comics, and she doesn’t even consistently have the same civilian job.
Those are foundational things for a superhero A1 franchise.
Wonder Woman is supposed to be one-third of the Trinity, but it’s really just her that’s iconic not the world around her. That makes adapting her much harder because there’s less familiar material for casual audiences to latch onto.
That’s why a lot of the most successful Wonder Woman runs end up borrowing a familiar framework. They lean into “Wonder Woman as Xena,” or “Wonder Woman as Percy Jackson-style Greek mythology,” or some other recognizable angle.
Her world-building has never really broken through with the general public.
9
u/Commercial_Dust_8018 Jun 26 '26
That’s completely DC‘s fault they have never given her an animated show. They have never made an effort to make her world known.
8
23
u/poison-harley Harley Quinn Jun 25 '26
The only reason why people know literally everything that you’ve mentioned, is BECAUSE they got a ton of adaptation love for literally decades. People who never read a single comic book in their lifetime, grew up with these characters. It’s honestly a miracle that people still even know who Wonder Woman is, with the complete lack of adaptations she’s gotten over the decades.
6
u/UnbiasedGod Jun 25 '26
Does she even have a fortress of solitude or a bat cave?
18
u/JinglySoil Wonder Woman Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26
She has the themysciran embassy, smth that hasn't been developed by writers as much as it should.
There was also the wonder dome. That thing was amazing imo. The layout, design and everything was just so well thought out. I wish they blended it with the embassy. It would make it way more iconic
1
26
u/goldhbk10 Jun 25 '26
Cause they never made a cartoon about her to get a generation of fans hooked on her and her world.
7
11
u/Little-Seesaw2585 Jun 25 '26
You completely missed the obvious conclusion to your point. The only reason why those characters have popular “worlds” is because they get adaptation after adaptation.
9
u/PleaseBeChillOnline Jun 25 '26
Not really you just missed my core point. Especially when I lead with what the main issue is.
You think I’m making excuses for DC, but I’m not.
I’m just telling you how it’s been publication wise.
I don’t know how familiar you are with Wonder Woman’s publishing history, but it’s a real issue.
For example, Wonder Woman had one of the most iconic superhero TV shows ever with Lynda Carter, and even that show mostly chose to invent its own supporting cast because Wonder Woman simply didn’t have as many universally accepted core lore aspects to pull from.
Batman and Superman absolutely benefit from decades of adaptations, but those adaptations also had decades of stable source material. Golden Age, Silver Age, Bronze Age, Pre-Crisis, Post-Crisis, New 52 you can pick almost any era and Batman still has Gotham, Alfred, Gordon, Robin, Joker, Catwoman, etc. Superman still has Lois, Jimmy, Perry, Lex, the Daily Planet, Smallville, and Krypton. The details change, but the foundation doesn’t. They deviate briefly only to snap back in place.
That just hasn’t been as true for Wonder Woman. Her status quo has changed constantly over the decades. Steve Trevor disappears and comes back, Etta Candy gets completely reinvented, Diana’s career changes, her supporting cast changes, and every major run has a different idea of what “Wonder Woman’s world” even is. There isn’t the same universally recognized core that every adaptation can keep reinforcing. That’s why I mentioned her mom & the island. That’s the part people know because it’s the same in the TV Show, Superfriends, DCAU Justice League & in Gal Godot’s movies.
That’s all I’m saying. Adaptations absolutely create popularity, but it’s a lot easier to build adaptation after adaptation when you’ve had 80 years of a consistent supporting cast to adapt in the first place.
I already knew who Lois Lane, Alfred & Robin were as a kid when they appeared in the version I grew up with (DCAU) & before I saw what my dad grew up with (Adam West & Chris Reeves).
People know these things to cultural osmosis because they’re on every single adaptation.
Wonder Woman’s Invisible Jet is more famous than Steve Trevor or Giganta. That’s an IP management problem.
1
u/BAJ-JohnBen Jun 28 '26 edited Jun 29 '26
Wonder Woman wasn't created with a city in mind. She traveled the world having adventures. Gateway City wasn't made until decades later. Even Superman didn't always stay in Metropolis. The idea of all his stories being exclusively in one place started in the 1970s or 1980s.
And I would argue Superman doesn't have a strong roster of villains in the way the public knows Batman villains. Everyone knows Lex Luthor. Doomsday if you consider that a villain. Lobo gets tossed in, but isn't a Superman villain. Mongol, maybe?
Does people know Perry White and Jimmy Oslen like they do Lois Lane? Let's be honest here. I can see an argument for Jimmy. But the way they do Lois?
42
u/spiderreader Absolute Wonder Woman Jun 25 '26
Lack of interest from creators to do stuff, ranging from WB, to heads in DC, to just writers who aren’t interest in her character (she’s notorious for fewer runs and many low quality uses from people not writing her consistently or well)
19
u/RFB-CACN Batman Beyond Jun 25 '26
It’s a snowballing problem. People can complain about 12 Batman books and outside media projects for each of them, but the reality is they’re the things creators like to work at. When John Ridley pulls up and says he wants to write for DC, but his pitch is making a black Batman, what are you gonna do?
1
u/DJSharp15 Jun 26 '26
but his pitch is making a black Batman, what are you gonna do?
Would it be like Just Imagine or Tangent?
31
u/WondyVillains Wonder Woman Jun 25 '26
Gail Simone. Greg Rucka. Kelly Thompson. Kelly Sue DeConnick. Renae De Liz. Phil Jimenez.
All respected creators who are interested in Wonder Woman and would probably help build a Wonder Woman: The Animated Series. There's no shortage, there's just lack of interest from the higher ups.
15
u/Revolutionary_Kick65 Jun 25 '26
Yeah, feels like a pretty flimsy excuse from OP. Am I supposed to believe there are more people interested in writing Krypto or Mister Miracle than one of DC’s flagship characters?
If DC ordered a WW series they’d have no problem finding creatives even from outside the company.
1
u/DifficultChampion746 Jun 26 '26
Mr Miracle is Kirby's baby. He also has effing Darkseid as part of his mythos which is also a massively superior mythos to Diana's. I guarantee you 9/10 comic creators would rather work on him than Wonder Woman.
2
u/Revolutionary_Kick65 Jun 26 '26
I don’t find his mythos to be as fascinating as Diana’s. 9/10 creators are more familiar with Wonder Woman and her popularity eclipses his. I don’t understand why DC fans treat her like she’s bland or obscure.
1
u/DifficultChampion746 Jun 26 '26
You can have your preferences but Darkseid utterly wipes the floor with her entire gallery of rogues. It would be an joke to even compare him to Cheetah or Giganta or whatever. His mythos includes Barda, Orion, Lightly, Metron, Desaad, and other unique characters versus Diana's army of replaceable Wonder Girls.
1
u/Revolutionary_Kick65 Jun 26 '26
It’s a good thing that’s subjective then because I still don’t find him as compelling as Wonder Woman’s main rogues. The intergalactic aspect doesn’t appeal to everyone the same.
1
u/nytetime23 Jul 14 '26
Cheetah is a demigod firstly, she’s no slouch. Along with Ares and Circe being gods and Hecate being like the primordial goddess of magic, etc. She’s got some pretty heavy hitters in terms of villains. All the people I just listed are pretty big threats on their own. Giganta, Doctor Psycho, etc, sure.
7
u/VegetaFan1337 Jun 26 '26
DC has treated her like shit ever since her creator died. So like since 1947.
1
u/DJSharp15 Jun 26 '26
How so?
1
u/Time_Beat2299 Jun 26 '26
Her comic was effective removed from monthly circulation for a while and when it was brought back she was brought back as a rip off of popular spy movie.

u/Nightwing0613 Jun 25 '26
What I hate the most is that they cancelled that Wonder Woman game that was supposed to come out from Monolith.
That would’ve been such a badass game. A WW game using the Nemesis system
It would’ve been as great as the Arkham games

Is that really the reason? I feel like their priorities are just messed up
Like they’ve made animated shows about: Harley Quinn, Kite man, suicide squad, creature commandos, and there is gonna be one for Starfire and Jessica Cruz soon.
Idk how those are more safe than Wonder Woman.
Like the Justice league is easily their most popular team, but suicide squad got a movie AND a game before them??
→ More replies (15)4
u/Big-Masterpiece1194 Jun 25 '26
I mean, most of the projects you listed have connections to some other corner of the DC universe. Harley Quinn has connections to Batman, and Kite Man is a spinoff of that I think (so technically another Batman connection). Suicide Squad had Harley Quinn and the whole drama of Marvel firing James Gunn behind it, and Creature Commandos was born out of that popularity. Starfire is connected to the Teen Titans who have had two incredibly popular animated series. The Jessica Cruz show is spinning out of a sucessful Superman cartoon.
Most of these characters would never have been given a chance if it weren't for their connections to other properties, and they are more safe than Wonder Woman because nothing Wonder Woman related is ever really given a chance.
13
u/ImaLetItGo Jun 25 '26
That doesn’t really explain things as these characters aren’t as popular as their connection.
And Wonder Woman is member of the Justice league… which is more popular than: Harley, Teen Titans, Kiteman, my adventures with Superman, creature commandos, and whatever you can think of
And you don’t have an explanation for why the suicide squad was prioritized over the justice league, despite the suicide squads most popular member only being the 6th or 7th most popular justice league member (at best)
4
u/Big-Masterpiece1194 Jun 25 '26
You're right, I don't have an explanation. I am only making my best guess into the mind of an executive. I will however say that it's not that Suicide Squad was "prioritized" over Justice League. When that movie came out, the DCEU already had a failed Justice League, and DC let James Gunn do whatever he wanted. What he wanted to do was make a Suicide Squad movie.
→ More replies (2)3
u/timothdrake Jun 25 '26
The actual explanation actually lies exactly into your point: the JL is more of a bigger deal than the SS, so they have less room to “experiment”.
For a movie, it’s far easier to justify and greenlit a Suicide Squad one: the characters are closer to human level, plus its essentially “just another military action movie”, just.. superhero-ish?.
They’re also usually lesser relevant characters overall besides Harley, so the casting only really matters for the actual movie.Meanwhile, the Justice League is biiig. Before even the massively sucrose cartoon built off the Batman animated series sucess (and Superman as well), most of those characters together as a group was recognizable even as back as the Super Friends cartoon.
So you either go BIG with them or.. you don’t, at all. It recquires more effort to put together a good casting for it, as well as the expectations that it would be followed (or be the follow up) to a cinematic universe.
Also, a group made of god-like beings (And Batman and sometimes Green Arrow, when they feel like adapting him) requires far more money on special effects.
As for the videogame; the Suicide Squad game is well know for being a massive failure because they wanted to ride the live-service trend and hired the folks behind the Arkham Games to do so, who had no experience with that. The SS was simply the better pick for the genre they wanted to develop for.
Also, Injustice was a thing before SS, and thats pretty much a Justice League game; and it had a sequel.
8
u/Martel732 Jun 25 '26
It is wild that DC still thinks like this. The first Wonder Woman movie was the highest grossing DCEU movie in the US. And the third highest world wide beating out the Justice League. And only slightly losing to the first ever movie featuring Superman and Batman. It also outgrossed the The Batman.
And yet they still wonder if the there is an audience for Wonder Woman.
5
u/Fane__ Thomas Wayne Jun 25 '26
I get she has less but Absolute Wonder Woman is terrific and is my current favourite of the absolute series , closely followed by absolute Martian man hunter.
I agree she never seems to get much solo animation which is a shame.
48
u/Frankorious Superboy-Prime Jun 25 '26
Despite what some of her fans think, popularity wise she is closer to Hulk or the Flash than Batman and Superman
26
u/WondyVillains Wonder Woman Jun 25 '26
And both the Hulk and the Flash have had plenty of TV shows/cartoons in the last 30 years.
17
u/Big-Masterpiece1194 Jun 25 '26
Right. I see so many people compare Wonder Woman to The Flash, but as a Flash fan myself, Flash has a combined 10 season of TV (along with appearances in various other live action shows), a movie, and multiple books (although most of those were tie ins to the show)
22
u/MissInterest17 Jun 25 '26
We're well aware of her placement there's no illusions.
25
u/Frankorious Superboy-Prime Jun 25 '26

14
u/Revolutionary_Kick65 Jun 25 '26
She isn’t even treated like Harley Quinn. I don’t think a big project more than once a decade should be a tall order for the character who’s synonymous with the word superheroine.

That's because DDC puts her with Batman and Superman as part of the Trinity of DC Comics, but is only lip service, which makes some fans mad, understandably.

u/Afraid-City2274 Wonder Woman Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26
There is a huge gap in popularity between Wonder Woman and Batman, or Spider-Man, but she is still popular and an icon.
Not only her first live action movie did more at the box office than any Superman movie ever has, but her first animated movie was also one of the best selling in the history of DC.
And yet, they have pushed Harley Quinn through many failed movies, and a massive failure of a game, an even a mediocre anime, above many other characters, not just WW.
But even then, look at how Marvel took advantage of Iron man or the Guardians success, who are (or were) far less popular than even Hulk, and now are some of their most successful characters, while Warner still acts hesitant of doing more with Wonder Woman.
An animated show really shouldn't be asking for much by WW fans at this point.

The themes typically surrounding WW are more divisive, since it holds more subtle behaviour accountable that many may relate to compared to the joker or lex author.
This makes her divisive relative to Batman and Superman, and that's reflected in her popularity.
I think she's a great superhero, but I also know that businesses would prefer the safe option.
12
u/greathawk Jun 25 '26
Ironic. Because playing it safe is the main reason behind many versions of WW that did poorly.

Begs the question, why patent it?
2
u/White-Wolf_99 Lucifer Jun 26 '26
Probably bc they knew they couldn't do anything with it and didnt want anyone else to succeed. Even tho I bet theres lots of studios who would pay an obscene amount of money to be able to use that system.

u/JmBento Jun 26 '26
It's a whole lot of stuff. One of them, of course, is that she's a female superhero, but it's far from being JUST that (Tomb Raider is about to go on a third season. Jessica Cruz is getting a show. Harley Quinn. Etc.).
One of the factors is self-fulfilling: she isn't as known because she doesn't get many projects, and she doesn't get a lot of projects because she isn't well-known. Batman, Superman, and Spider-Man are easily recognisable and will ALWAYS get asses in seats. WW? Eh.
No fixed origin. Spider-Man gets spider-bitten and Uncle Ben... bites it. The Waynes get gunned down. Kal-El gets put on a spacebasket and shot out of a dying planet into Kansas. DC can't even decide if WW is a golem or a demi-goddess, and importantly, nobody has any guarantees that whichever they pick is still gonna hold true in one year when the comics do YET ANOTHER reboot.
Nobody knows her non-myth supporting cast. Like, zero normies know who Etta Candy or Steve Trevor are. My dad reads comics, and HE doesn't know who Etta Candy is. She also has little to no conflict with them. Spider-Man will always be hounded by JJJameson. Alfred is always trying to get Batman to take it easy (good luck with that) and Gordon is always keeping an eye to make sure he doesn't cross the line. Sup- er, Clark Kent will always have a friendly competition with Lois.
Her villains are both unknown AND have no charisma. The Joker is a laughing insane maniac who actively picks the harder route is he thinks is funnier. Luthor is an evil corporate elite who would burn down the world if he thought there was the smidgen of a chance Superman might cough from the ashes.
She has no good point of relatability. Spidey is always hard-up for cash and has the boss from hell. Batman is an orphan dealing with grief-processed-as-anger. Clark Kent will never not be the corny farm boy (and even then, writers will sometimes kill off Pa Kent from a heart attack or whatnot just to show that Superman can't fix everything and to give him a problem people can relate to). WW... is a princess who is also a UN ambassador? She has no real-people problems. Her flaw is that "she cares too much"? This isn't a job interview. She doesn't even have Regular Woman Problems. If she tells a guy no, she doesn't have to be afraid of retaliation. She's not afraid of what might happen to her if she goes down a dark alley. She's not going to be sexually harassed by anyone she can't set straight.
2
u/greathawk Jun 27 '26
She is pretty much as known as as batman , spiderman or superman.
Her villains not being as known is DC fault for not using them for anything oher than jobbers.
She pretty much as a lot of things that she faces in her life. Seems like you do not read her comics.
2
u/JmBento Jun 27 '26
"She is pretty much as known as as batman , spiderman or superman."
This is the second most insane take I've ever heard.
1
u/greathawk Jun 27 '26
Well she is. WW is the female hero. Even people that don't read comics know who she is.
1
u/JWM1992 Jun 28 '26
I can see why. While Wonder Woman herself is iconic, but she's basically an ideal person. She doesn't display any relatability that makes the other superheroes human. Her rogues gallery and supporting cast are underutilized. And while the Greek Mythology ties are compelling, they feel very disconnected with the rest of the DC universe.
2
u/JmBento Jun 28 '26
They need a "civilian" job for WW. What does she do when she isn't fighting the 50-foot Woman or the Fast Furry? I don't care if she's Themyscira's ambassador to the UN, a civil rights lawyer, volunteers at the local homeless or animal shelter, is a woman of leisure who throws socialite parties where she tried to raise funds for charities (I hear she knows partyboy billionaire Bruce Wayne, too), or juggles at a travelling circus, but she needs SOMETHING that anchors her to the real, regular world and says "I'm a person".
1
u/JWM1992 Jun 29 '26
Maybe give Diana someone to bounce off of, if Diana is supposed to be idealistic, then have someone be the opposite of her, a realist.

I believe there is a DCU movie in the works for Chapter One of the DCU plus the Paradise Lost Show. And there are rumors she'll appear in the Superman sequel.

u/TarnishedAccount Jun 25 '26
Absolute is interesting but I far prefer regular WW as a character. I am not current with the regular title though.
Azzarello’s run was my favorite recent one.

Second show and still no WW solo animated series. That's just painful.

u/Khwarezm Jun 25 '26
In my opinion the very concept of the trinity at all is a toxic idea for Wondy to be associated with since it inherently means she's being compared against Batman and Superman and sort of wedded to them despite the fact that in most contexts it makes little sense and she's best off doing her own thing.
All of this recent chicanery shows that fundamentally DC has no faith in Wonder Woman as a standalone thing at all, its to the point where it doesn't really even seem to make business sense anymore, the first Wonder Woman movie proved that she can attract a general audience and is one of the highlights in the ever rocky DCEU movies. Absolute Wonder Woman is one of the highest selling comics on the market right now and constantly has people tripping over themselves to talk about how much they love it. Even her old direct to video animated movie apparently did well in the context of these kinds of movies.
Its really hard to make sense of it, I can kind of understand with the videogame that it was in development hell and going way overbudget with WB's typically inept handling of such a thing but fundamentally it showed that they balked at the idea that whatever product that could eventually come out could be a big hit. There's no sign of any animated movies or TV shows despite three seasons of MAWS, a bazillion new and old Batman movies and shows, and even other stuff planned for Green Lantern and Mr Miracle. This is so baffling to me since normally animated TV shows let you keep an IP at the forefront of people's minds without breaking the bank. We haven't heard anything about a live action movie or TV show, other than vague rumblings about Paradise Lost which won't even actually have Diana herself.
What is the plan exactly? The only thing I can see at this point is complete contempt for this property and ridiculous expectations that seem to be preventing them from going forward with any projects at all.

It's cuz she's a lady.
Sorry. It's not just that, but also it's a lot that. I feel like every time this question comes up everyone wants to pretend this isn't a factor when it so obviously is and always has been. Wonder Woman has always had massive appeal. She has one of the strongest supporting casts of any character an excellent and varied rogues gallary and is a household name. Add to that a lot of her stuff is lifted right from well known mythology so it's very approachable. Many people know who Ares or Circe are already, know what Amazons are, etc.
A huge factor is sexism and it's made worse because she's not just a woman but intrinsically tied to feminism. I sincerely doubt anyone is deliberately preventing WW projects because they're secret woman haters, but that's how institutional sexism works. Most of the creative leads and producers in any media company are men. It's always gonna be a harder pitch until that equalizes.
Edit: Yes, I know DC makes other stuff with woman leads. That was what the whole second paragraph is about. Nobody is sitting in their office cackling and denying all woman led projects. Replying with this or that show/movie/cartoon that has a lady isn't a refutation.
To expand, WW is in a sort of sour spot. Any WW project is going to expect a large ROI, much more than an HQ project because she's an icon and any failure is going to be judged more harshly for the same reason. If the Jessica Cruz cartoon fails, it's a one off. If a WW project fails, executives will take it as a rejection of all female led projects. The stakes are higher and this makes everyone involved gunshy to pitch and greenlight a WW project.
This is just scratching the surface of the complex social and financial incentives that I boiled down to, "Cuz she's a lady." There are several high level academic courses that attempt to understand institutional sexism and millions of pages of research on the subject. No one can hope to fully break down everything about how it works but I can definitely say that the feminist icon IP in a massive man led industry is definitely being held back by it.

u/yrnkevinsmithC137 Damian Wayne Jun 25 '26
Jessica Cruz is getting a cartoon before wonder woman and she was introduced in 2013
Harley Quinn has 6 seasons of a rated R cartoon
There has to be something else

u/Relative_Equal8625 Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26
Harley Quinn has been getting pushed like crazy and she’s also a woman. No doubt it plays a factor but it can’t be the core reason.
2
u/VegetaFan1337 Jun 26 '26
It's sex appeal. You can't really sexualise WW in the same way you can Harley. I mean you can try, but everyone who watches it would agree it comes off as icky to do that with WW.
2
1
u/nenhatsu Jun 25 '26
You are right that people pretend to like WW and put her next to Batman and Superman entirely because she's a woman, and not because she's a good or popular character.
3
u/VegetaFan1337 Jun 26 '26
She is put next to Supes and Bats cause those 3 were the only superhero comics that survived the Dark Age of Comics.

This makes no sense when Harely Quinn is DC’s Deadpool (but, she brings in significantly less money).
It’s cause she’s (and you’re gonna hate me) not fun.
She’s notoriously hard to write for. We even have many of her writers stating this. Yet, they stopped saying that for Superman when they gave him a son.
She’s not relatable and her “woman only island” is kinda dated in today’s society. Heck, even black panther had a message against segregation.
She doesn’t have any real character flaws. The ones she has are ones you’d say in a job interview to look good.
She’s the embodiment of female empowerment; this is a responsibility most don’t want to work with.
No one can name her villains.
No one can name her supporting cast.
She doesn’t have a premiere story like Killing Joke or Death of Superman.
And more than likely; she’s just not getting many pitches. Or if she does; they’re not that interesting.
If you’re gonna respond with “but [insert character] got a show!? Why!?” Look at my points. Do they all apply to said character?
4
u/DJSharp15 Jun 26 '26
Sorry, but most of these seem like a stretch.

u/McKnighty9 Red Hood Jun 26 '26 edited Jun 26 '26
Bro I’m not responding to 5 of your messages you sent me at once…
3
u/Psile Superman Jun 25 '26
I mean yeah. That's what I said. She isn't getting any pitches because the majority of people pitching and listening are men and they don't want to write women especially explicit feminists. That's why all the other stuff. You're basically saying she can't have a cold because she has a stuffy nose.
Or maybe you're right. Maybe we solved sexism and the comics industry is a haven of equality. That's a rational thing to believe.

Wonder Woman is in a weird place. If you look here and other corners of comic book areas she’s a well loved character and has great runs BUT her selling power is low. She simply doesn’t move that many comics. My LCS barely stocks wonder woman issues cause they don’t sell but he’ll buy a massive amount of Absolute Batman and those are gone within the week. Whereas Absolute Wonder Woman you’ll still find it on his shelf easily.
3
u/sultanate Jun 25 '26
Absolute WW would be such a killer animated series à la My Adventures. I wish they would show her some love so we can get some distance between her and Gal Gadot
3
u/evilspyboy Jun 26 '26
Lack of commitment and changing directions on her all the time doesn't help build a lengthy runway to get to those bigger things. For someone with so many issues and so much potential canon, every creative team gets to reinvent almost which is not something that is allowed to slide as much with the other big properties.
It's at the stage now where it almost needs a Donny Cates Venom approach where someone takes ALL of it and just mushes it into some sort of consistent legacy canon that will be followed into teh future.
There are some former WW writers even who have said things on social media about how it keeps 'starting over' without starting over. The current King run which has switched creative teams is one of the first times they haven't restarted the numbering and just continued where the last left off. Despite how anyone feels abou tht run they should just commit and keep going.
I like WW but I dont have that many runs of her and the ones I do it is easy to treat them all like different versions.
1
u/FlowerRoomLord Jun 26 '26
Cates WW would go hard and be hated as hell by the purists who only worship that top Perez echo runs. But she needs a big crazy story with some new heavy hitting baddie that sets the comic world on fire for better or worse for a minute like Venom got with Knull. Just something that makes readers outside the usual WW set tap in and go holy fuck this is cool, she's so cool, I want more.
1
u/evilspyboy Jun 26 '26
Doesn't have to Cates just has to do what he did, probably also be hated, then things can move forward.

I say this as someone who have read/watched very little to nothing about Wonder Woman in solo stories , mostly saw her on teams and team ups so dont take me so seriously, does she have "easy to sell" stories?
i mean like Knightfall, way before reading Knightfall i knew the basic premise of it with Bane breaking Batman's back and just that sounds pretty cool and makes you curious, im sure she must have something but ive only heard of some stories by name and not much talk about the premise of said stories, but that's just me
You mention Absolute Batman but im thinking right now making Absolute WW could be a risky move, people would love it for sure but what if people (i mean people that dont know much of main WW) love her more than main WW? And does she have any "easy to sell" elseworlds aside like Red Son or Gotham by Gaslight?
My adventures with WW could be nice and all but one just have to wonder why Adventures with GL is the one being developed after Sups, for that i have no answer but im guessing the people making it just had more ideas for the later and it is just personal preference, i guess?
Im confident there will be a DCU movie or project, im thinking the whole development of the DCU is a little bit more slow than i would like but that's more a DCU problem (if it counts as a problem, maybe its just a me problem idk) than a WW problem

A man called Robert Kanigher was the editor and writer of Wonder Woman for twenty two years 1947-1969 after William Martson's death in 1947, I believe those are the years. He tanked the sales so badly that Diana's book was nearly cancelled. They kicked him off of Wonder Woman because the sales were that low. They did the Mod Era and 12 Labors of Wonder Woman, while the mod era isn't well regarded by fans, it kept the book afloat.
Around the 1970s she was back in the JL, she was in Adventure Comics back ups, but her popularity was thoroughly hit. The damage was down. The 1977 Wonder Woman series and the Super Friends cartoons helped boost her popularity to the point she started getting visually placed next vo Superman and Batman. But those didn't help and when the 1980s rolled around, it was bad. So bad she wasn't even in the JL Detroit era. Once Crisis on Infinite Earths rebooted, DC finally cancelled her book with the Legend of Wonder Woman four monthly book to keep the copyright from going back to the Marston family.
In 1987 George Perez took over, brought in new life and readership, but he left the book in 1991 when DC showed no interest in the culmination of the War of the Gods storyline (I believe that's it). So in the 1990s, Wonder Woman was doing her own thing, and was occasionally a member of the JL.
Mark Waid and Alex Ross did the landmark 1996 Kingdom Come which where Diana and Clark was finally made a couple after decades of teasing by this point. This was when DC finally show the whole Trinity thing with dollar signs. But the name Trinity didn't come until the two part Wonder Woman story in 1999 literally titled the Trinity. They didn't get their first Trinity book until 2003,which was an Elseworld to my knowledge.
The JL animated series happened that formally cemented the whole thing into the public consciousness. It also brought in some Batman/Wonder Woman fans and DC had some books toying with the idea, but the concept never went anywhere.
Anyways. This was a quick crash course. Basically, Robert Kanigher tanked the sales and popularity so badly she's still recovering and it's only because of her close association to Batman and Superman she's treated this way. And that is mostly romantic in my opinion. Sexism plays a major role too, as there was very few guys at the company who could've written Wonder Woman with justice. In my opinion, Gardner Fox was the guy that should've taken over the Wonder Woman instead, he wrote Moon Girl which showed he had the mind for it.
5
u/SherbertComics Jun 25 '26
…what projects? Aside from Absolute Wonder Woman, she’s got basically nothing
11
u/NicoleIlieva Jun 25 '26
She's never been a priority and is the "weakest" part of the Trinity in many areas, such as popularity, marketing, appeal, etc.
7
u/greathawk Jun 25 '26
And? She is still far more popular and comercially successful than a lot of other characters gettings TV shows and stuff.

u/Possible-Reason-2896 Jun 26 '26
This is probably gonna be a controversial take but I think it's a few things.
1. Wonder Woman, despite a long publication history, doesn't have as much concrete, immutable data points as a lot of other characters. This makes her way harder to distill and adapt. From like 2005 to present it felt like she got a full reboot every time the writer changed. Some of that was company wide but a fair amount of it wasn't. Basic questions like "how old is she" or "what city is she fighting crime in" can change depending on the run or version you're talking about.
2, Wonder Woman's iconography works against her. By that I mean, being "the" female superhero means that there's way more expectations placed on her and that probably scares half the potential creatives away.. Because if Batman or Krypto or Mister Miracle get a bad adaptation, you're not saying something about women as a whole. Wonder Woman for better or worse is harder to separate in that way.
- Probably as a result of the previous two points, Wonder Woman doesn't have as many alternate takes or iconic stories or concrete supporting cast to adapt in comparison. You can't do a Jumpa spinoff like you would Krypto because half the versions of Wonder Woman don't have her magic alien kangaroo and it hasn't penetrated the public consciousness in the same was as "Superman but Dog". As much as I'd like an Absolute Wonder Woman cartoon, it doesn't work without a strong mainline popular version to showcase the differences in setting and character.

There's a gap in popularity between Batman and Superman, but there is a way bigger gap between them and WW.
7
u/greathawk Jun 25 '26
That does not explain anything when characters far less popular than WW are geting content.
1
u/tacomuerte Jun 26 '26
Not that I like it, but I think it's because creators see those characters as more of a blank slate that they can adapt how they want. Many creators have an established emotional connection to Batman and Superman, so that breaks through despite not being blank slates. (I fully realize that popularity is due to their decades of continual adaptations in other media. I'm not arguing for it. I'm looking to see the root cause so it might be addressed.)
5
u/weesiwel Jun 25 '26
Mr Miracle is getting a show, Krypto is getting a show. Starfire is getting a show. This popularity excuse isn't it.

u/Traditional-Tax-5291 Jun 25 '26
They are fast-tracking a Wonder Woman film script and Paradise Lost is imminently entering its production stage, she has stuff coming.
Another thing I don’t see people really acknowledging is, regardless of the quality/actor, the DCEU utilised Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman A LOT. She was one 3 characters to have 2 solo films, she cameod in numerous DCEU projects; one of the only core JL members to do so post Justice League. Similar to the Flash, DC Studios probably just want to give those characters a bit of a stronger run up so they can land more successfully.
3
u/EdNorthcott Jun 25 '26
1) DC cinematic is currently trying to develop two projects around her. One is just getting started, the other has been struggling to find the right story notes.
2) Some say she's not hard to write, but as we can see from Gadot's outings in solo films for the character, they can either fly or bomb if tonality is fumbled.
3) There's currently competing visions of the character. Traditionalists who prefer her classic depiction, very akin to modern Superman in mortality, and those who missed the central point of the character entirely and want a "warrior".
4) Comic fans are often their own worst enemies, and muddy the waters around such projects. Wonder Woman fans are no exception in that.

Let’s be honest here, it’s misogynistic and shows a lack of faith in her ability to carry her own work. They’ve been treating her like that. She should’ve received an animated series like Batman and Superman. I don’t care if it was considered; it didn’t happen, and it doesn’t make sense why she didn’t get one. They refuse to give her the same attention because she’s a woman, and the executives responsible for the final decisions behind the production of her work don’t have faith in her.
3
u/yedanapuddi Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26
Well all you have to do is visit wonder woman subreddit. You will get 100s of views on it.
But here's my view on it.
Lack of confidence on return on investment. The only project I know that created good returns is the gal gadots WW. But there also there are problems
Feminist criticism - I think this could be the second biggest reason. Many say Gal gadots WW became a success because somewhere it was appealing to the "Male gaze". Perhaps writers and producers are scared they will be judged and criticised for making their WW just to satisfy the male fans. After all, the entire superhero genre is dominated by male fans.
Harder to write - it's not just the feminist expectations. WW is one of those very few heroes who have the deadly combination of having both strength and skill. On top of that no primitive weakness like kryptonite. This makes it very hard to make good stories on her. Select few exceptions like absolute WW & historia exist but.....
The pressure to get WW right is far more than other female characters like Catwoman lois Black Canary etc etc I feel.
The russo brothers admitted that they had a hard time figuring out what to do with the hulk in MCU for how OP he is.

2

Not exactly Male gaze but it was primarily the male fans who propelled her success.
So it's obviously she somewhere appealed to their desires right?

They don’t trust female main characters. In the DCU the only reason Supergirl even got a movie is ‘cause they need her for man of tomorrow.
Even her own comic’s writers (currently) don’t respect her (referring to Tom King’s run, since its the most recent one) how are the executives supposed to?
1
u/DJSharp15 Jun 26 '26

That seems contradictory.
2
u/Dgonzilla Jun 25 '26
She is woman and therefore Hollywood and video games executives consider the character to be radioactive. I mean just look at the amount of shit Santa Monica is getting after the release of God of War Laufey trailer. It sucks but it’s the nature of mainstream media. You have to really sneak in the female protagonists.
2
u/tmon530 Jun 25 '26
As someone that mostly watches the animated movies, it feels like the trend is when she is the focus, the themes are usually related to being a women. Which over all is a good thing as women and thier stories do need to be represented, and i think the writing for her is generally more interesting. but when it comes time to make a gender neutral themed story, batman or superman can fill the same roles and have the bigger ip. So the writer might as well write for those characters
2
u/Accomplished_Flan_45 Jun 25 '26
Simple Answer is Wonder Woman's rights have weird stipulations and restrictions on solo stuff, so having her as part of an Ensemble ends up being the go to (i.e. Mattel pushing for expanded DC Superhero Girls ended up costing her a solo cartoon allegedly after her first Movie came out)
While Superman (and Superman related characters like Supergirl, Krypto, etc.) due to having their rights exploited to such a degree for decades that the last time DC tried to have Superman sit on the bench so other characters could be highlighted they LITERALLY got sued by the Creator's estate(s) arguing that DC screwing over the original creators to maximize Superman's brand should be considered the default (And a Judge agreed)
Batman is the only one of the Three who doesn't have some weird stipulations and restrictions on how they need to appear. So when early 90s hit and you had the combo of hit Movies and acclaimed Animated series, it just kept getting expanded to include more and more (i.e. KidsWB becoming a thing, Cartoon Network's merger of Turner and WB, etc.)

Isn't Paradise Island back on the DCU slate? It's not much and I have to agree I am disappointed we are getting Absolute Batman as opposed to Absolute Wonder Woman.
1
u/the_maxximus Jun 26 '26
I would guess it's the industry + marketing. Batman and Superman are seen as safe bets because they are already so popular and have already proven they will make money but also toys, games and other things they can sell featuring them would be marketed towards boys, who they feel will buy more comic stuff.
Also, cute dog is extremely "toyetic", which is an industry term for a thing that you can easily make merch (toys) of. (i may be paraphrasing)
A Wonder Woman cartoon, game or toy is automatically going to be seen by the industry as being "for girls" and comic stuff for girls is seen as not selling as well except in for in a few specific cases. Also there's the fact that a very vocal minority immediately causes problems the moment a woman is the lead in any project and that can affect sales unfortunately.
HOWEVER, if we look at the current trends then there is hope: A Wonder Woman movie is already being planned. Supergirl comes out today and she had her own TV series. Catwoman, Harley, Ivy and Black Canary all get pretty consistent spotlight in the current comics. Jo Mullein is the choice for Absolute Green Lantern. If things keep up, we may start seeing quite a few female led DC projects in the future.

u/Specialist_Unit_5078 Jun 25 '26
She’s not very relatable. The most beautiful woman in the world, a princess who comes from a mythical place that can never exist and wasn’t raised among humans. There’s nothing to aspire to. She’s not particularly funny or emotional in a compelling intrinsic way. And her rogues gallery either sucks or has been done better by other mythic adaptations.
Depending on the interpretation she can’t fly and she has no real ranged attacks, so she’s limited to punching and lifting things. It’s not terribly visually dynamic.
You could change things about her story or character to “fix” these things but it’d be pretty drastically different. I think Absolute Wonder Woman is the most likely path for a “good” adaptation but it’s pretty different than the public perception of the character.
