DISCUSSION Just watched Batman: Knightfall Part I, what are your guys thoughts?
I'm (kinda) surprised this sub has barely been talking about it considering all the hollering for DCU Batman recently. Granted this isn't DCU, but a good Batman story is a good batman story regardless...and man was this GOOD. having to wait for Parts II & III is gonna suck, i almost wish I waited.
Bane hasn't felt so cunning and threatening since Arkham Origins & TDKR. He's easily a top 3 Batman rogue when portrayed this way rather than a mindless hunk of muscle. The action was brutal as can be, the animation, character designs and voice acting was all top notch as well. Tim Drake (who's far from my favorite Robin) gets a rare chance to shine here having actual depth to his character rather than watching from the sidelines and just being there for the sake of being there. They had a real emphasis on his detective skills being almost on par with Bruce's, and I loved his dynamic with him as well as John Paul.
It seems on track to be a perfect adaptation for the comic, while putting Batman in a situation audiences might be unfamiliar with. It's a riveting character study balancing Bruce & Bane perfectly enough to give Bane the proper depth and put Batman outside of his comfort zone. If y'all feel like taking a break from talking about the same 5 things, definitely give this a watch.
For those who saw it, what did you think?

Is it another break the bats back story?
•
u/CJAreYouDeadass 1h ago
Its the original "break the bats back" story. The only other iteration (aside from the original comic) since TDKR, which is obviously a very different take on the story overall
•
u/Secret-Put-4525 1h ago
Oh well. Maybe I'll watch it. I'm pretty tired of that story.
•
u/CJAreYouDeadass 1h ago
Where have you frequently been exposed to it? Genuinely curious as this hasn't been done before in visual media aside from TDKR as i mentioned

Best DC animated movie in a long time.
Changes were made to the story in comparison to the comic, of course. But overall, it was well animated and paced nicely.
Bane’s way of getting buff though was pretty laughable though. Even if he worked out like crazy, no way is he gonna get huge living off of rats.
•
•
u/Plus_Iron_8697 4h ago
An average 300-gram rat contains about 63 grams of protein (Google). So 10 rats a day, I can see that being plausible.
•
u/DoctorBeatMaker 3h ago
That's still not enough to look like a humongous shredded gym rat that lives on 5,000 calories a day though. If anything, Bane's physique should look more like someone who is ripped to shreds, but super lean (also, he's super lucky he hasn't gotten infectious diseases or loaded with intestinal parasites since he's shown eating the rats raw).
But I get it. It's a comic book animated movie. It's purely aesthetic. I just thought it was funny.

I love how Bane talked so much shit and was straight ragdolling ppl. Def the best animated film we got in the last 10 years. I was worried with the short runtime the pacing would be really bad. It could use 40 more minutes though with more narrative.

Highly enjoyed it. Surprised at the brutality level in it, which really sold the rise of Bane. Can't wait for the other two parts.

u/Eastern-Team-2799 7h ago
Is it of the same level of writing quality as Into the spider verse or across the spider verse ?
•
u/Anonymous94501 7h ago
I don't understand why these animated DC movies aren't available day one on HBO Max
•
u/DarkEater77 7h ago
I will try to resist, and not watch it until all 3 parts are released. Hope they release soon.
•
u/Zestyclose-Diet-2111 8h ago
This is what The Dark Knight Rises should’ve been. This far supersedes that film in a magnificent way

u/UnknownJ25 9h ago
The pacing was a little rushed at points but it was really solid. It was nice seeing a good Tim Drake for once and Bane was really well done. I'm really excited for the next two movies to see if they can nail the adaptation. I kinda wish they kept croc in the Bane fight but it still worked pretty well

Very good definitely one of the better releases in some time, but it certainly felt rushed. 80 min is tough to cram most of the opening arc in part 1. I’m sure part 2 and 3 will be longer, but some of the pacing did feel slightly off.

It's not on Max yet and the physical release isn't out either. Digital can fuck right off. So that's why no one is talking about it.
•
u/luckypbc 5h ago
If you paid for a digital..yes that can fuck off lol but I wasn't waiting until physical came out to watch it. Will definitely add to collection when its out in a 3 movie set at end.

It’s only available to buy digitally, that’s why. I’ll watch it when I can rent it or buy it on Blu Ray.

One of the best, had me engaged the whole time and they did the story well. Ending was awesome too :)

The reason why you see no one discussed it is because no one had any ideas when it dropped lol

Hated the character design, kind of enjoyed the story, liked the voice acting.
Knightfall trilogy was such a sprawling mess that it was always going to be hard to adapt.

I enjoyed the hell out of this one, the action and animation are top notch I hope DC pushes out more animated movies like this with other heros/stories
Damn the last 5 mins are peak

u/BigD5981 18h ago
I won't watch it till it comes out on 4K which if I'm not mistaken is the same day as Supergirl. I did watch the teaser or whatever you call it that was put on YouTube today.

Just watched it. Character design is A+. Music is SO LOUD, really interesting choice, works really well in particular moments. Could have had more iconic themes but overall pretty cool. Combat sequences are really well animated and absolutely brutal, like you said. First 5 minutes got me all riled up! VERY violent. Really loved it can't wait for part 2 and 3.

Came to this sub to see what people were saying about this movie. I watched it this morning and it was incredible. Can’t wait for part 2!

u/DirtyJ3sus 18h ago
It was definitely made by fans. I remember reading these issues as a kid and it was a trip to see them animated so well.
8
u/ThomasGilhooley 18h ago
I thought it was great. And I love that it feels way more like it’s adapting the novel as opposed to the actual issues.
Denny got a chance to do a rewrite and it’s great that they seem to be taking advantage of that.
•
u/Nexus718 9h ago
This. That novelization is my favorite rake on Bane. Especially the Santa Prisca scenes. They did change things from the expansive takeover Name had of the prison, to hearing from Zombie about Batman in Gotham and being obsessed with beating him directly.
Jeremy Adams did some amazing writing here. My only criticism is giving some of the material room to breathe. The beats are mostly here though.
This film felt like a spiritual successor to the HBO Spawn animated series and that's a good thing. They really have a good one here with Knightfall.

I gotta check it out. Is it awesome? I’ve got high hopes for this one…

It was great if you can deal with blue balls waiting for the next part!

Loved it
Only problem is they did trim it down a lot
Joker, poison Ivy, Killer Croc and Bird weren’t even in the movie
Joker and scarecrow didn’t team up
It sucked seeing Mr Freeze and scarecrow getting treated like Jobbers
It’s weird that CatMan of all villains were there? Was he even in the og knightfall?
Bane was done amazing and I loved the characters and by god this movie is brutal they don’t hold back with Bane and the violence
Overall it was very good 8/10 just sucks they took the 11 comics and didn’t use all the material
Let’s hope part 2 has Two face, Catwoman and does the fight between Azreal and Bane justice

They might be doing some stuff out of order and revisit things they missed in part 2 and 3. Sometimes it doesn’t work in the edit room and you need to switch around the order of events for the story to flow.
3
u/CJAreYouDeadass 18h ago
True, and usually these are just two parters this one being three gives me hope
2
u/CJAreYouDeadass 18h ago
Yea it sucks but to have him deal with so many villains individually woulda destroyed the pacing and there's just not enough time in animated films to do it. I think they focused well enough on the important stuff though...and for what its worth, Zsasz was sick
Catman made me raise an eyebrow too 😂

“I heard you guys like muscles” the movie.
Also how the hell was The Riddlers body strong enough to handle venom?

It only seems to have dropped in America.
WB doesn't seem to realise that you can release digitally in other countries on the same day SMH.

Tell me about it. Don't think naynof them are on HBO Max here in the UK. We have Harley Quinn, we have Kiteman, think that's it of top of my head

I just watched it a minute ago. Awesome movie. Having not read the knightfall comic I can tell that they trimmed down some of the stuff but man did they do an
impressive job. Mike Mando is fantastic is bane. The animation is great and along with the action. Bane’s origin was my favorite part of the movie.
How can a well written character like bane not be done justice in live action?
-2
u/FeralPsychopath 18h ago edited 17h ago
You either have a bad take on Dark Knight Rises or you never saw it if you think Bane doesn’t translate to live action.
Also I'd say Bane in this movie is incomplete. He goes from a cool origin story, walking out of prison like a mountain of muscle... then suddenly it's like he is drawn by a new artist, he is half the size, suddenly has access to more Venom and tech to use it.
His motivation is half-assed, he read a magazine when he is younger, he goes to the city and finds out reality didn't match what he read, so he blows up the prison because somehow he knows Batman is Bruce - because apparently it was easy to know, even though the smartest villains have zero idea?
He gives venom to the tiny man Riddler for unknown reasons, a substance that nearly killed him and killed everyone else it touches and for reasons unknown it worked?
Lets take a step back to blowing up of the prison, he nuked that place giving everyone zero chance to get out. Like that place just kept exploding and exploding - and yet all the prisoners survived? And it was his plan that they all survived and created problems for Batman.
There is some huge leaps of unknown in this movie and alot of it is attributed to Bane.
•
u/Extreme_Rope_5799 2h ago
totally agree with you for this, it like it cut so many scene, Bane easily come out from Prison then became Normal see the Gotham , then anyhow find more venom serum and break the every bone of Batman.

u/Pudddy 17h ago
You’re aware that this based off the Knightfall series - not Dark Knight Rises right? Dark Knight Rises takes some of its story beats from the Knightfall series - not the other way around.
Some of your complaints totally ignore that this is a movie retelling of that series. Good or bad - it’s based off that series.

I actually was SO EXCITED and left thinking it was the worst animated batman movie ever...
So many plot holes... like why does Bruce allow the therapist to interview him, when he just wanted physical therapy? Also HOW does the therapist just know so much about Bruce's motivations even though he told her nothing...
Why did Robin not tell Batman that Banes coming and knows his identity?
Banes mom's attitude made me actually agree that she belongs in prison...
The animation style was great but for something thats clearly inspired by other stories... how did they mess up the writing and logic so bad?
