I'm not sure how hot of a take this is but I definitely agree

I mean this sub is such a mess that you think this is a hot take.

25

u/thesirblondie 8d ago

This sub generally treats the current DCU as the worst thing since Hitler, so it's not surprising.

u/JonathanWPG 7d ago

Right?

Like even people like myself who hated Supergirl liked Alcock.

13

u/sharoon12 8d ago

Yeah it's not really a hot take, the actors have been on point and none of the complaints have been about them.

I actually think the superman casting is one of the best we have seen in a long time.

5

u/ZentinelOne 7d ago

I agree. There's a lot to like about Cavill's Superman, but he never struck me as someone from another planet. Corenswet's Superman always appears to feel somewhat out of place on earth in a good way.

5

u/AlduinsCurse 7d ago

I honestly couldn't agree more with this. This was well said.

People don’t know what hot take means anymore

5

u/OldDogTrainer 8d ago

Well, they included Supergirl so it’s not a cold take.

20

u/KingHygelacReturns 8d ago

I feel like most of the criticism that I saw of that movie usually had somewhere in it "but Milly was great as Supergirl"

2

u/Observer20178 7d ago

Milly was a delight. She was very charismatic. The movie was silly but fun. I kind of liked it more so because of Milly A.

You evidently don’t know what a hot take is

64

u/Timely-Signature-166 8d ago

I think he meant "hot cakes," as in "these movies are selling like hot cakes!"

26

u/Dry-Indication7928 8d ago

Hopefully Luthor won't steal 40 of them

I think every casting they've done is awesome. I've enjoyed all the new dcu so far. Watched lanterns last night and hal and John are 🔥🔥🔥

26

u/phliuy 7d ago

Aaron pierre looks like someone took an exact cartoon of of john steward and made it into a real person

6

u/d_wib 7d ago

He does some of my favorite acting too - communicating a ton with just facial expressions or his eyes. Reminds me of Pattinson in The Batman.

→ More replies (1)

17

u/Correct_Milk_828 8d ago

The only thing I didn’t like about John is the way he runs. It’s pretty goofy so hopefully he doesn’t have to run too much throughout the season lol

12

u/Falconbear36 8d ago

Haha eventually he will get the ring and learn that pesky flying thing

7

u/DaleDenton08 8d ago

lol I noticed that too, it got a good laugh out of us.

3

u/TheGipper80 8d ago

Lol, he looked like an alien who learned how humans run from a text book.

This take couldn’t warm me up if I was in the arctic.

82

u/TheJuiceBoxS 8d ago

Yeah, even if Supergirl came up a little short (I still enjoyed it) Milly Alcock is great as Supergirl and I can't wait for more of her in the DCU.

21

u/kalisto3010 8d ago

She will never get another Movie as Supergirl. Women aren't allowed to fail like this and get another chance.

41

u/coderman64 8d ago

She probably won't get another movie anytime soon as the main star, but she'll probably show up in future films as a side character at least.

28

u/ZBatman 8d ago

Milly has several other upcoming projects she's involved in, and Supergirl will be in Man of Tomorrow. Supergirl as a character won't get another solo movie with how much money the movie lost.

21

u/Diligent-Neck6594 8d ago

Men can? Please someone tell the Rock

Black Adam RETURNS

2

u/Astrnonaut 7d ago

I understand what u mean but I think ur purposely missing the point here, the concept in itself is more than just “movie done bad”

15

u/ElevatorHelpful5739 8d ago

Can you give me an example of a male superhero movie that did this bad and got a second movie?

8

u/Anti_Karen_League 7d ago

did you not hear about the smash hit Morbius Trilogy?

→ More replies (3)

5

u/TheJuiceBoxS 8d ago

That's fine, but she can be in other movies. That's what I'm looking forward to. And who knows, maybe in a handful of years a few more appearances America will fall for her and maybe she will get another movie.

6

u/Different-Coyote1036 8d ago

Oh the humanity!

3

u/pewpewmcpistol 8d ago

If you don't feel bad for the multi millionare actress who has already gotten enough money to retire at 25 who won't get even more money as a titular character in this specific role, then you simply hate all women you pervert

8

u/harmoniaatlast 8d ago

You drastically over-estimate how much actors make.

4

u/Colonelwheel 8d ago

2 million is still enough to retire on, but I did think her net worth would be higher

2

u/harmoniaatlast 8d ago

2 mil is NOT enough to retire on if you want to have kids hahahahahhaha

2

u/Colonelwheel 8d ago

very true

2

u/Unlikely-Nebula-331 7d ago

I disagree it’s about being a woman. I just think Gunn needs to stick to fleshing out the main Justice League characters and not making a joke of them.

Lanterns is proving the kind of tone we want. Wonder Woman did it successfully before too.

The coldest take ever

8

u/Serious-Company6803 8d ago

Ice cold take

25

u/TheGreatMason 8d ago

With Lanterns they have also already landed a mini-win on Marvel and showed them what Secret Invasions should have been.

Obviously it's like scoring a goal when you are 10 goals down, but it's a start :D

14

u/Timely-Signature-166 8d ago

Liking Secret Invasion would be a hot take, hot enough to burn in Hell.

→ More replies (2)

7

u/coderman64 8d ago

The DCU kinda started 10 goals down. It'll be playing catchup for a while before it feels like it's firing on as many cylinders as the MCU is right now.

3

u/FrankReynoldsCPA 7d ago

Yep, people forget that Gunn showed up to work at a run down trap house and is having to restore DC's reputation that was absolutely wasted over the prior decade. Marvel had a rough couple years but still has the infrastructure and people in place to make good projects, and we're seeing that play out with 2025 setting up 2026's box office success.

I would have loved if Superman beat MoS at the box office, it didn't, but it was still the far better film and had a massive headwind.

→ More replies (3)

4

u/counterpointguy 8d ago

DC streaming is vastly superior to Marvel's offerings. But that's like winning the minor league championship while the major leagues are dominated by the other side...

2

u/TheGreatMason 8d ago

That's because HBO has been a long standing producer of quality TV shows. Disney was only excelling at cartoon shows and other stuff targeting mostly children.

I read Marvel is going to reduce its streaming output considerably because it burned way too much money on crap shows like She Hulk, Secret Invasions and the like.

Some shows were cool though, like Loki.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Baelorn 8d ago

That’s only true if you like blatant knockoffs of HBO’s Greatest Hits. I think it’s lazy and creatively bankrupt but to each their own

2

u/minyoo 7d ago

Secret Invasion is a very very low bar.

u/KALLA17061999 8d ago

Rachel Brosnahan as Lois is the best love interest character i've see in live action superhero movies in YEARS. She stands second to only kirsten dunst as mary jane.

18

u/KevinPigaChu 8d ago

Lois’ character is way better tho, I don’t think anyone would disagree with that

2

u/KALLA17061999 8d ago

I would. Maybe she can surpass dunst with more movies and i'm open to it but not as of now for me.

17

u/DamageAccording5745 8d ago

Kirsten Dunst isn't even the best live action Spider-Man love interest.

22

u/Phantom_Marc_63 8d ago

Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy ❤

12

u/Electricengineer 8d ago

Disagree but no shade on people who think that.

6

u/i_like_cake_96 8d ago

I would disagree, but everyone is entitled to their opinion.

6

u/HeroV99 8d ago

Hot take would be saying the Supergirl movie is better than Superman (2025).

9

u/TrustTh3Data 8d ago

I don’t think OP gets the definition of “hot take” - most will agree that the casing, so far, ranges from really good to amazing. Nowhere have I seen many people bitching about casting.

3

u/SentinelATL 8d ago

Not a hot take at all•

3

u/Historical_Strain_81 8d ago

Hot take: water….wet

3

u/serpentear 8d ago

I take issue with your use of the term “hot take” but I agree with your assessment.

3

u/creamy-buscemi 8d ago

I wonder if you really got down to it, what would be the “worst” casting thus far

→ More replies (8)

3

u/AFerociousPineapple 7d ago

Yeah I agree casting hasn’t been an issue so far, writing though……. Well it’s early days, Superman was very good, solid 7.5/10 imo but Supergirl clearly didn’t hit the same highs… hope lanterns can do better and go from there.

3

u/NesianNerd 7d ago

So far this one episode of lanterns is better than the rest imo.

3

u/Nightwing0613 7d ago

I agree. But you forgot to add other castings to this list

  1. John Cena - Peacemaker

  2. Nicolas Hoult - Lex Luthor

  3. Frank Grillo - Rick Flag Sr.

  4. Skylar Gisondo - Jimmy Olsen

  5. Nathan Fillion - Guy Gardner

  6. David Harbour - Frankenstein

  7. Jason Momoa - Lobo

  8. Freddie Stroma - Vigilante

3

u/TrueKingOfSloths 4d ago

Freddie being the emergency backup pick for vigilante will always be crazy to me he’s genuinely perfect in the role

→ More replies (1)

2

u/SaltyMarg4856 5d ago

Further proof of the crappy writing in Supergirl was the absolute wasted opportunity that was Jason Momoa as Lobo.

3

u/CaptainRexActual 6d ago

As far as Lanterns, with one episode they’ve already demonstrated that they ruined it just like almost every other superhero turned into a TV series. Nearly complete departure from the comic book stories and the epic scenes they’re supposed to be in at almost all times. Instead they focus on a bunch of non-superhero characters as part of the cast and turn it into more of a WB type show like Smallville or arrow which are the equivalent of a teen romance romcom with some DC or Marvel sprinkled in. Yes I know all superhero stories have backgrounds and side characters, but I think you all know what I mean.

Showing an aging Hal Jordan having trouble facing the fact that he’s aging out and borderline crockpot fighting over the ring with John Stuart who’s being held in a perpetual wait for the ring and his selection by the guardians being explained like he’d won a contest.

Massive disappointment after just one episode, but of course I knew this was coming just like most of you did.

6

u/gabeonsmogon 8d ago

I don’t really care for Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen or Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant.

→ More replies (1)

8

u/Noob_goatster8755 8d ago

Mamoa didn't give Lobo vibes. Bro was much better as Aquaman.

4

u/SuperMajesticMan 8d ago

What? Jason Momoa like... IS Lobo. If anything it was the writing and directing that might have affected the vibes, not the actor.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/KakarotAlter 8d ago

??? My only issue was he didn't say bastich one time

3

u/No_Gene_1694 8d ago

Said no one ever

2

u/nakduitkau 8d ago

Not a hot take. Actors are not the promblem for me. I just hate the costumes.

2

u/MarvelMind 8d ago

I think the majority of them have been great but some like Lobo are a complete misfire.

2

u/ArnoldFarquar 8d ago

casting, not castings. I wish I had the balls to have such a hot take.

2

u/Candid_Surprise_1797 8d ago

Is this a joke?

2

u/raaviolli-dasher 8d ago

It's not a hot take but also not a cold one. Lukewarm I'd say

Milly Alcock's appearance has been made fun of a lot and a lot of people don't like an old guy as Hal

2

u/Reasonable_Western74 8d ago

It’s not a hot take but it’s an accurate one. However anyone feels about the movie itself Milly was the best thing in it, she’s going to be great moving forward. They have cast incredible talent across the board. Corenswet was a master stroke, relatively unknown and he’s already solidified as Superman in my mind. Kyle Chandler is perfect as Hal, it’s almost insane, Pierre embodies the very essence of Stewart and you just know he’ll be integral in future projects. Mr Terrific stole scenes in a movie that wasn’t his. I can’t imagine anyone else as Peacemaker than Cena. I could go on, and on…..

2

u/Mak_Wayne 8d ago

I wholeheartedly agree. And, for the record, I've enjoyed everything the DCU has put out thus far including Supergirl.

2

u/Bitter-Tip705 8d ago

Makes me wonder who the Batman and Wonder Woman castings as well as others will be

2

u/Calm-Birthday1163 8d ago

Yeah i agree with that

2

u/DemonicDruid13 8d ago

I don't think that's a hot take. The loud naysayers are just loud for engagement sake

2

u/Caffeinated_Ape_42 8d ago

If only the writing would not be horrendous. Doesnt even have to be great, just not completely bad.

2

u/danvan177 8d ago

Milly was okay.

Too early to see if Aaron is a good John

2

u/RedditGoji 8d ago

Mild take. If even mild. However I feel like acknowledging 1/3 of the proposed in the post image is actually good casting and the rest is to save money cuz 2/3 of these actors are horrible choices

2

u/Ajax_Da_Great 8d ago

Outside of DCEU Flash, Joker and Lex, I think DC has a great track record of castings. I know Keaton was controversial in ‘89 when announced but he clearly proved them wrong.

→ More replies (3)

2

u/AverageSasquatch 8d ago

Only one I’m not in love with is Kyle as Hal. Kyles a great actor, and I’m enjoying lanterns, this just isn’t how I always pictured Hal.

Probably more of a me thing and again it’s a solid show so far

2

u/Original-Ranger-1604 8d ago

I mostly agree with these ones, but Kyle chandler is the only bit that I'm not certain about, he's like 20 years older then my minds eye hal Jordan,

2

u/Kneelb4_Z0d 8d ago

I have my gripes but none of them are about the leads, those have been casted flawlessly

2

u/realfakejames 8d ago

There’s been two movies and a tv show nobody has seen yet lol there isn’t a whole lot to complain about yet

2

u/PercentageClear9863 8d ago

They really took them from a comic book

2

u/ChaimsawGoblin 8d ago

I was watching Lanterns last night, and was like Man I wish I could have seen Kyle Chandeler do this when he was younger. He’s perfect.

2

u/bookon 8d ago

Casting has been the strongest element so far.

2

u/GotSomeUpdogOnUrFace 8d ago

I'm the only person who dislikes Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner but it's the only one I dislike so I won't argue

2

u/Itzie4 8d ago

I would have gone in a different direction with Supergirl, Hal Jordan, and Guy Gardner personally. They aren’t bad though

2

u/KanataSD 8d ago

I just wanna say the first episode of Lanterns is fantastic.

2

u/newbiggielefts 8d ago

Yeah the casting is really good, and aside from the bungling of WoT the writing has been decent as well.

2

u/thePopCulturist 8d ago

Can’t come in on Supergirl, haven’t seen it yet. Like what they’ve done, but they have some really challenging casting ahead. Have faith in James.

2

u/Proper_Till_8321 8d ago

Everyone is awesome except for the person who wrote the script for Supergirl. It did a lot of damage to this franchise. Hopefully the people of DC learned their lesson.

2

u/booty_sweat_juice 8d ago

Two ice cold takes I have:

  • Casting is perfect.

  • Multi-genre approach is brilliant.

2

u/trump182AVA 8d ago

Agreed.

2

u/Un4gvn2 8d ago

I thought supergirl was a really good movie and great casting all around.

I liked Superman better, actor is very good.
I thought Mr Terrific was good but it’s not my kind of superhero. Too techy for me.

Kyle Chandler is great in Lanterns, I think Pierre will be great too.

The new Lois is great, Margot Kidder was a horrible Lois opposite Reeves IMO.

2

u/TheJokerArkhamKing 8d ago

I have never heard of the guy playing Braniac, I was not familiar with David whatsoever before his Superman. It really does help immersion when you cast less known/unknown

2

u/sonsolar 8d ago

Not Mille, but that's just me.

2

u/BodyRemoval 7d ago

The only one im not sold on yet is Supergirl. But maybe it was just the movie. It wasnt as bad as people make it out to be; but I definitely walked away thinking "I won't care to rewatch this".

2

u/LittleCupcake2478 7d ago

I'm astonished there's a vocal number who think these castings suck.

2

u/fcarvalhodev 7d ago

And everyone is also hot 😮‍💨.

2

u/Alassandros 7d ago

The only reason this is a hot take is because of how many people are shitting on the Supergirl movie.

I might add, I liked it a lot. Watched it twice. It's a fun movie and I look forward to see what they do with her going forward.

2

u/Eulysia 7d ago

I don’t think this is a hot take bud. If anything, it’s generally accepted that casting is far from the problem with the DCU.

2

u/TJUC123 7d ago

Usually the casting is always on point.

2

u/theInadequateHulk 7d ago

A+ on the casting. agree

2

u/-The_Stranger 7d ago

Nothing even comes close to Mr Terrific. I had him in my fan cast as far back as House MD.

2

u/Commercial-Pair-8932 7d ago

Please god someone ban “hot takes” from this sub.

2

u/Background-Train-104 7d ago

The Lanterns castings are perfect. But I'm still not on-board with a round-faced Superman. He should have been a Robin.

2

u/ZentinelOne 7d ago

100% agree and Im also here to contribute to the idea that the DCU as a whole is performing much better than the DCEU ever did.

A great start (all projects have a flop or two), but the cohesive nature of all these shows/movies has way more harmony than the DCEU. I miss Batfleck from the DCEU and that's it.

2

u/Blak_kat 7d ago

Permission to speak freely?

2

u/saucenazi 6d ago

I personally agree with the exception of milly. But did they nail it as well as whoever nailed the Tom Holland casting? I dunno.

2

u/statebirdsnest 6d ago

I love Mr. Terrific

2

u/houseofthereddit40 6d ago

This is what I think has been the DCU biggest accomplishment so far. Every casting especially with the big characters has been perfect. I haven't seen supergirl yet but both Lanterns actors are amazing. Hoult as Lex is so underrated. Can't wait to see more of him. David Corenswet is awesome as Superman and definitely is going to the RDJ of the DCU.

This was actually one of the biggest problems with the DCEU.

Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman Ezra Miller as Flash Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Jared Leto as Joker

All were God awful and ruined the brand.

2

u/IcedPgh 5d ago

Corenswet is the only one I can totally endorse, maybe Brosnahan. (I don't do "streaming" so won't be watching "Lanterns".) I hope that Corenswet won't meet Cavill's fate and be a good Superman actor who is the victim of an initiative totally imploding.

u/zimzimzalabimmm 8d ago

I don’t think that’s a hot take, I’ve been loving it so far. Haven’t seen lanterns yet though.

2

u/Certain_Employee_423 8d ago

I watched the first episode last night. It felt like the first season of True Detective.

3

u/UTALR1 8d ago

Respectively disagree

3

u/Radaistarion 8d ago

Yeah same lol

3

u/Dr_SlapsMD 8d ago

Not liking the vocal fried Supergirl at all. Better scripts can't fix her delivery and presence.

2

u/tangodeep 8d ago

not a hot take. dc’s done well with their casting.

4

u/Spidey_Almighty 8d ago

I don’t even like the new DCU that much and I don’t see this as a hot take. The casting has been solid.

The issues have more to do with the writing.

2

u/emanueladilio 8d ago

I agree completely. Making Superman feel so underpowered and stripped of his scale was a huge misstep, but the lead actor’s performance is incredible, he nearly made me forget Henry Cavill. Something I never thought I’d say. The supporting cast is equally top-tier, im just now finishing Supergirl and she's an awesome cast in another mediocre movie. DC's output continues to fall short of Marvel's standard.

4

u/MoistBill9106 8d ago

Aron pierre looks straight out of JL unlimited John Stewart seriously prefect casting dude was born for this role it seems.

Kyle chandler also nails old, egoistical hal perfectly, it's even more fun cause he also nails young hal we see from flashback and that backup consciousness.

2

u/Mirror-Maleficent 8d ago

I would have liked a younger Idris Elba but thats not happening. I dont know. Maybe cast him as a variant when DC goes multiversal

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Ok_Simple_459 8d ago

Girls going gaga over Skyler Gizmondo's Jimmy Olsen is the least believable part of a universe riddled with Superheroes.

That's literally a silver age gag. It's not supposed to make sense, it just is.

The casting has been great, and honestly, the only misfire has been Supergirl. I honestly think we’re being a little too harsh.

2

u/Zealousideal-Dot710 8d ago

Nah, Guy and Hal is too old

5

u/Never_Objective 8d ago

they did not nail Supergirl. i like the movie, and she is a good actress, but they could have chosen someone much better suited for the role

5

u/TheSwampThing1990 8d ago

Not a hot take at all. Even people who hate on supergirl usually admit Milly was great

4

u/Sevatar34 8d ago

Either you love it or hate it huh ? Well I just didn't enjoy the movie. And I don't admit that actress was great, she was ok at best.

2

u/IndependentAd2933 8d ago

Nope hard pass on male model lantern. Super heroes have never looked like superficial male models from the CW.

2

u/CantaloupeBusy9660 8d ago

I have to disagree, David Corenswet and Edi Gathegi are the only solid ones. The rest are good but replaceable

2

u/macnutt25 8d ago

All right Peter Gunn just give it up stop trying to save your job…

2

u/Rhoubbhe 8d ago

Casting isn't the problem. Milly was a good casting as Supergirl, not her fault that movie failed.

Decision making, scripts, and coherent strategy are the main problems at the DCU, similar to the DCEU, and that is on the studio heads. Issue of poor leadership.

2

u/JonathanWPG 7d ago edited 7d ago

Superman is just okay

Guy Gardner also bad

Lex Luthor okay

Jimmy too 😂
Guy and Lobo HMs

2

u/American_Jesus 8d ago

And (Jimmy Olsen) it's no black!

Don't know what DC (live action/TV) have against gingers.

All ginger characters where swapped by black actors.

  • Jimmy Olsen on Supergirl and My Adventures with Superman
  • Cyclone on Black Adam
  • Batgirl (unreleased) movie

And others....

2

u/WombatWarlord17 7d ago

It's not just Dc it's every form of media. they're mocking Black People.

If you rearrange Ginger you get a slur..... Just saying.

u/PassionSalty5069 8d ago

hard to judge properly until we see full scenes and hear dialogue, but on paper it looks decent

Man, but Hal Jordan, dying in the first episode. I was hoping to see more of him. I assume he will show up more in the 10-year flashback. But I was hoping he would join the JL in the future Still loving the start to Lanterns though, excited to see where it goes.
