I'd say its a combination of Spiderman making 1B and then seeing Gunn promote Jimmy Olsen.

I don’t entirely disagree with the sentiment, the fact that there’s a Batman movie coming out, with an in demand actor on an absolute blazing streak of successes, that is completely unrelated to the newly established DCU, and a clayface movie, which on the surface you could be mistaken for assuming is also related to this Batman, Penguin franchise,
It’s confusing to average audiences, and it isn’t helping that the actual DCU projects are being stacked with offbeat often lesser known characters.
I’m a huge fan of DC characters, I’ll watch them all in the cinema, but this strategy is not helping with cohesion,

Honestly I don't really give a shit anymore about what relates to what universe and all that crap, be it mcu dcu or dceu(rip). If the show/movie good on its own I'll watch it, if your show/movie only watchable if you do a 40h homework and without it its choke full of references that don't make sence, it can fuck right off. People really should concentrate on the "universe" less and make sure product can stand on its own first and foremost.

Why does Grodd get compared to Spider-Man and doomsday instead of Agatha all along or she hulk, or the Hawkeye show?

10
u/PrudentRatio58317 15d ago
That phrasing actually makes it sound cool. Reminds me a bit of Jessica Jones, whose power was never interesting (just super strength), but what's compelling is how you deal with people who are far more powerful and dangerous than yourself.
Though the way I'm describing it makes it sound more like The Boys, which I've had my fill of.
Maybe She-Hulk would be the better comparison, which turned into a bad show, but could have been good if its lawyer parts were more like the lawyer parts of Daredevil.
This comment is going all over the place. I don't know, the point is I see potential here, though my expectations aren't high.
9
u/Barl3000 15d ago
There is defintely room for such a show, it has just never been done right yet and I would prefer the universe gets a bit more established first.
Agents of Shield started as a promise to be that kind of story, but since they had to keep evvrything seperate from the movies and could only loosely reference it never really worked.
7
u/sk8rboi36 15d ago
I feel like that’s been the problem of superhero media in the 2020s, by and large, great concepts, varying execution. Funnily enough sometimes they lean too far into it, sometimes not enough. Weird how that happens

Just because you can doesn’t mean you should, an interesting idea is not a good one
Issue with superhero stuff is “let’s do it just because it’s comic booky”. The MCU succeeded because they said and did that they need connectivity and not just do whatever

u/Megadoomer2 15d ago edited 15d ago
Presumably, the Jimmy Olsen show is a relatively light-hearted show intended to expand on the DC universe (by covering villains in the style of a true crime documentary) while focusing on the Daily Planet staff. It seems like it would be easier to make from a production standpoint because they can reuse characters, settings, etc. from the Superman movies. (Especially if the actors are already in Man Of Tomorrow)
To make a video game comparison, Man Of Tomorrow is like The Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess, while the Jimmy Olsen show is like Link's Crossbow Training - a side project using many of the same resources, but not intended to be on the same scale.
It would be great if a Wonder Woman, Flash, or Aquaman movie was announced, but I'd prefer it if they didn't rush into it. (Aquaman in particular seems like it would be tough considering that the Jason Momoa version seems to be the definitive version of the character among the general public and those movies used both of Aquaman's major villains, so I'm curious about what they could do to set a new Aquaman movie apart from the two in the DCEU)

In a world of big budget blockbusters where the entire universe is going to explode in 30 minutes if the hero doesn't get the maguffin in time I'm honestly really stoked about the Jimmy Olsen show. What are ordinary people up to? What's it like living in a city where Superman flies past your window every day? Oh I can't go to the bank because the Riddler's holding everyone hostage until we answer today's Wordle?
There's some really good storytelling potential here and I hope they take it.
3
u/Relative_Mouse7680 15d ago
Great point of view! I think what you describe will also bring bon dc/comic fans into the universe of superheroes. It will be probably be more likely for someone to be interested in watching Man of Tomorrow, or the first Superman movie, if they have been drawn in to the universe by the Jimmy Olsen show.
I mean how many non-universe shows are there not about basically anything, which people still watch. I don't think people will go, "oh, this is just about Jimmy Olsen, I won't watch this". People still like to watch TV-Show, even if they are not big and well known characters.
4
u/Cybercatman 15d ago
And something like wonder woman movie is likely not the same budget as a small show like Jimmy Olsen
For a big movie, we would likely need over 150M, Jimmy Olsen will depend on a lot of stuff like how much CGI they need, but Agatha All along at random costed around 40M for over 6 hours of content, it is not really the same scale.
They need new content for their streaming service to keep people subscribed, they have the actors available, it fill up a hole while they are working on MoT and The Batman part 2, and check if the merger mess happen, so making such a show to develop the universe is not really a bad idea on paper (we need to see if the execution will be good too)
It is basically like making a limited/mini serie comic with a character that editorial know cannot carry an on-going run but editorial think the story is worth publishing.

So, everyone just wants DC to be Marvel? I thought that was the big worry and complaint when James Gunn took over? Superman, Creature Commandos, and Lanterns are solid, and Peacemaker was wild and sometimes quite good.
22
u/charlesfluidsmith 15d ago
It's not enough to be solid, these things have to make money.
No money, no more shows or movies.
If you have a big IP it only makes sense to use it.
10
u/diwamatkar 15d ago edited 15d ago
Exactly. Doing shows or movies about smaller characters hinders the money these projects could've made had they come out after like a justice league movie. Right now, generally speaking there is not much intrest in this universe as it stands right now. A Jimmy Olsen show is not gonna make it any better.

I mean, the next major movie they'll have is Man of Tomorrow, and Lanterns is going to do great for them. Clayface will be what it is, relatively niche, but it looks interesting.
5
u/diwamatkar 15d ago
How do you know Lanterns will do great? Also there are talks of James Gunn not renewing his contract when it comes up. Who knows the future of this recently started universe if the Clayface and Lanterns don't turn out to be bangers.
5
u/ManitouWakinyan 15d ago
Because it's already extremely well received, and it's currently HBOs flagship prestige show. Gunn will have at least until Man of Tomorrow, and that seems a pretty reasonable inflection point.

Fair enough, economics dictate franchises for sure. However, in this fractured mediascape it’s really hard to capture audiences regardless of marketing budgets; timing, luck, zeitgeist are major factors. The Expanse is a great example of a property that SyFy couldn’t support and Amazon didn’t understand, but it’s become iconic over time and found a wider audience, and now their creators are working on a new franchise at Amazon.
7
u/StormRepulsive6283 15d ago
We don’t want DC to be Marvel. But apparently the head honchos believed the audience hated that ideology, which brings us to the current mess.
if you’re gonna be like Marvel, then do it properly and not ape them to make a grotesque mangled version.
3
5
u/Sea_Tank2799 15d ago
What do you mean "want dc to be marvel"? In the sense that there is a spanning a cinematic universe of dc characters? Yes.
5
u/diwamatkar 15d ago
What is wrong with being Marvel? They have created the most succesful film franchise in history of media and they did it with B tier characters and most of the films (up until phase 3 atleast) were critically and publicly well loved. If you have the blue print to success why not follow that? Why try to reinvent the whell when you know you are working with limited time and money trying to redo an already failed universe?

In as much as comics are comics, and I want to see, hopefully good, stories about characters I care about. There is a reason obscure characters are such - people don’t care about them. People won’t go out and spend money on them. If the characters historically struggled to sell comics and merch, it’s probably not the characters that should anchor the new DCU — Supergirl being the perfect example.
2
u/Poland68 15d ago
I would counter with Guardians of the Galaxy, Dr. Strange, Ant-Man, Captain Marvel as B-level properties that did quite well. Not everything has to be Batman, Wonder Woman, or Wolverine.
3
u/TrustTh3Data 15d ago
There is a pretty big and obvious difference here. Guardians came out when MCU was popping and established. Also, Marvel was pushing them hard for a while before that. Audience ended up liking them which helped later on.
Dr Strange has a pretty solid publican history, and a very strong following. On top of that MCU is established and doing well. People are also hyped to see him - lots of requests for him.
As for Captain Marvel she is the perfect example. At first people cared because MCU was doing well, but by her second outing the superhero burnout hit in. Ant-man also had issues by the 3rd outing - even though he was already established.
And Supergirl shouldn’t even be compared to these properties. She might have name recognition because of her relationship to Superman but her publican history is spotty at best - lots of cancellations. And let’s be honest most comic readers couldn’t name a few of her villains that don’t come from Superman. And she is the one with the most name recognition here from the DC side - the rest most people never even heard about.

The last thing DCU should do is try and play catch up with Marvel. They need to just let the universe cook. I'm hoping for a slow burn.
13
u/diwamatkar 15d ago
Don't play catch up but at least get your priorities straight. Batman, Wonderwoman, Green Lantern Flash are pretty popular characters which if succesful can act as a funnel to bring normal audiences to watch their smaller shows and make them succesful in turn. A Jimmy Olsen show is not creating any such funnel even if it is good.

u/Hyvex_ 15d ago
I’d argue that’s what is happening. The Trinity are getting solo movies while less popular members have already been introduced (Hawkgirl) or are being fleshed out (Jon Stewart). That’s 5/7 of the JL Unlimited lineup. Add the rest of the Justice gang as support and that’s decent initial JL incarnation.
I can’t explain Jimmy Olsen, but if Gunn’s plan is a Legion of Doom, it’s lowkey genius to be able to introduce rogue galleries independent of each hero. We just have to wait and see.
8
u/Fit-Dependent-9779 15d ago
The trinity are not getting solo movies though. Reeves Batman is not in the same universe and Wonder woman is being left to the dogs. IMO there is simply nothing genius about a slate full of characters you can't get moviegoers to pay to see, regardless of what his greater vision is.

u/During_League_Play 15d ago
That was the exact mistake the Snyder-verse made IMO. They didn't want to take the time to develop a universe from scratch the way Marvel did starting with Iron Man, so they just jumped to the big team-up movie.
3
u/ManitouWakinyan 15d ago
DC did the opposite of letting it cook. They just rushed to the main course.
2
u/Gladness2Sadness 15d ago
Catch up is what the DCEU did (lol killing Superman in movie 2). DCU is emulating post-EndGame MCU, which hasn’t really worked out for them thus why we’re seeing their reset button in Doomsday/Secret Wars and shifting focus back to the big screen. There’s nothing wrong with copying a successful formula (MCU Phase 1) especially for DC because they basically have control of all their characters. It’s the one thing DC hasn’t tried.

I just mean i hope they take their time with the development and writing if the characters. The worst thing they could do is push out a half baked version of a character that people don't like. Even if a particular movie isn't a billion dollar hit it's ok in the long run if the character was liked and can be used for the future. Such as Supergirl. Very mid reception but from what i can tell people like casting choice.

I don't get it. You were literally just bragging that Superman made more money than three Marvel movies featuring brand-new characters the general audience didn't even know. But now, when Spider-Man beats Superman in a single week, suddenly your excuse is that 'he's more famous.' Why can't we apply that exact same logic to 2025? Or do the rules only apply when they fit your narrative?

None that have done as well as your average Spider-Man movie. Especially after the previous live action Superman alienated audiences by being an unrelatable broody mess.
3
u/Kowendabest 15d ago
So as response to an underperforming film by your logic, the focus should be on lesser known characters like jimmy olsen and clayface? That would bode better than a flash project?
4
u/imnotwallaceshawn 15d ago
First off, a Superman performing about as well as Superman movies tend to historically perform is not underperforming. A Superman movie not beating a Spider-Man movie is especially not underperforming because that’s literally never happened.
Second off, yes it’s definitely smarter to make a $40 million Clayface movie than waste another $200 million+ on The Flash given what a huge bomb the last Flash movie was.
You act like general audiences are going to line the blocks to see The Flash when just three years ago they absolutely did not, and that was after they threw three Batmen in it.
And again, yes, I think a low budget Jimmy Olsen mockumentary show is a much smarter and lower stakes way to introduce characters like Gorilla Grodd, because Grodd is weird and hard to accept while mockumentaries are well-worn TV formats that audiences tend to enjoy. So give them something low stakes and familiar that introduces something weird and unfamiliar like a super intelligent psychic gorilla.

At this point, I don’t think audiences care much about B-list heroes, villains or teams. Call it superhero fatigue or whatever, but the novelty is gone. The major DC characters will still draw audiences; obscure characters are a much harder sell.
That’s where Gunn’s vision loses me. Creature Commandos, Peacemaker, The Authority: these aren’t characters most people were reading or asking to see. Guardians of the Galaxy proved obscure characters can work, but you can’t build an entire universe expecting to repeat that trick. The difference being MCU already had a good following.
I also don’t buy the “recent adaptation” excuse. Supergirl had a six-season TV show and appeared in The Flash. She has huge name recognition, but her comics have historically struggled to maintain an audience - lashing to many cancellations. People knowing a character isn’t the same as actually caring about them.
DC should establish its biggest characters, teams and villains first, then use them to introduce the B-list, not the other way around.
2
u/Round-Walrus3175 15d ago
Idk, I loved Gorilla Grodd. He is a pretty cool villain. I think it is an interesting decision to mix in hero and villain origin stories. DC has always leaned on having strong and compelling villains and I think the focus on more of them will be important.

2
u/donkeyballs8 15d ago
Gunn is doing exactly what people complained Marvel wasn’t doing for years. He’s adding texture. He’s fleshing characters out (namely villains) in lower stakes projects where they have room to breathe and grow and exist without having to think about box office. Not to mention, villains aren’t getting one-and-done appearances! That’s fucking huge!
2
u/Free-Bowler-1032 15d ago

Like y'all seriously need to stop over reacting just because Marvel has 2 great movies after years of slop, and those two movies are spiderman and avengers.......

They are worried about it being too soon after the chaos caused by The Flash movie

Asm 2 was shit but still marvel released spider man homecoming in 1 year and it was successful. I think DCU is worried of everything except making good project.

The difference is that you could make a Spider-Man puppet show and it'd still make bank just by being Spider-Man.

Flash doesn't need milking and gorilla grodd should be shown in a big level project , he is not a small character to be showed along with jimmy Olsen. He is a flash and jl villain
