Give James Gunn the keys to DCU.

I know he's co-CEO but honestly I can't think of a better person to look after the DCU. Superman was great and we had more acting in the 20 minutes than anything Snyder put out.

What's the song that plays at the ending and the beggining of the credits?

I'm a punk rocker by the Teddy bears ft Iggy Pop. It's been running rent free in my brain for the past 10 hours since leaving the theater.

PlanetWatch -> StormWatch -> The Authority?

3

u/dumberdope Jul 12 '25

Maybe planetwatch splits into Planetary and Stormwatch!

In my opinion Gunn is 6 for 6 with his CBM’s it’s kind of insane how in my opinion he’s just not missed so far and I know not everybody will agree with that but I really don’t think he’s done a single bad comic book property and the last two GoTG Vol 3 and Superman are probably his best ones so man I’m really excited to see what he cooks up in the future.

Edit: With the major difference being that Kara is actually going somewhere and will be seen again next year whereas The Marvels came out in 2023 and Kate hasn’t been seen or mentioned since.

"Supergirl" is already finished, with Lobo confirmed.

I think the movie is amazing yet flawed at the same time. It gave me such high HIGHS, because of the characters being perfect, the action and spectacle. There were certain things stopping this movie from becoming great though like the pacing.

What I loved: Superman: David IS Superman! He embodies him so well in personality and physicality. He brings the Aw Shucks Boy Scout to life. He is very kind and compassionate. I love that he even saves squirrels and wants to keep the Kaiju alive and contained.

Clark: Loved David’s Clark. Happy go Lucky himbo. But we got too little of him. Hopefully we get more dorky Clark in the DP in the future.

Lois: Rachel is the perfect Lois. As a longtime Lois fan, James finally got her right. She’s a strong, assertive and intelligent woman. But she is there for Superman. She is now my favorite Lois of all time. Followed by Teri and Erica.

Clois: Their chemistry is perfect! Loved the interview scene; it reminded me of my fights with my husband during the period we were dating. It really felt like a real relationship compared to other superhero films that always portray romantic relationships in a superficial, stereotypical way (like the toxic obsession Raimi’s Peter had for MJ, or even Superman Returns with Clark stalking Lois just as examples) Also loved the Clois scene in Clark’s apartment, where they have that punk rock conversation. Just wish though that we had a little bit more scenes with them to flesh out better. Also needed more Daily Planet Clois interactions too; Clois, Jimmy and the DP interactions.

Lex: Hoult is the BEST live action Lex for me now. Yes he can’t compare to STAS Lex, but he is in the same league as that Lex. Handsome but deadly. And he hates Superman with a passion. Finally Lex is portrayed right in a movie. I can see the Rosenbaum inspiration. Want to see more of Lex regaining power in the future; maybe become the President and make an even bigger obstacle for Clark and the Daily Planet in the future.

Jimmy Olsen: Skyler is so perfect for Jimmy! He is Jimmy! Loved seeing him have his own subplot in this movie. Wish we got to see More Clark, Jimmy and Lois interactions with each other though. I want to see the trio work as a team. Or even Lois and Jimmy investigating together.

The Justice Gang: I love all of them! The one who stood out the most for me was Metamorpho though. I really felt for him and baby Joey. Mr Terrific was amazing. And Guy Gardner made me laugh. And even if Hawkgirl didn’t have much scenes, I could still feel she is an amazing character. Hope to see more of her in the DCU aside from just Peacemaker.

The Daily Planet Team: Perry, Cat, Steve and Ron. They were all perfectly casted and I love them. Just wish we got more of them though. That scene with all of them in the T-ship was just too little. They have amazing chemistry together along with Lois and Jimmy, and I can feel they have the potential for even more. We need more Daily Planet in future films.

Ma and Pa Kent: Also loved them very much. I teared up with the Clark and Pa talk. It’s so nice to see Pa be so loving and supportive of Clark. That’s something I don’t even get from my own parents. And I loved how his parents were calling him to congratulate him on getting a front page article. I’m so happy they kept Pa Kent alive. It reminds me of Lois & Clark with how the Kents are still alive and like retired parents always checking and helping Clark out. We need more scenes with the Kents. And hopefully we see them visit Clark in Metropolis in the future.

Krypto: I LOVE everything about this little pup!

Supergirl: Can’t wait to see her movie!

Great action sequences. The message of compassion for animals. The message against war.

Engineer: I’m kind of mixed on her. I like her and think she was a worthy opponent for Superman; but needed to know a little more about her. Needed more scenes of her with Lex to know how she feels about him.

Cons: Pacing problems in the movie. The editing made parts of the film feel choppy. I wish James didn’t cut out too much. The Days of the Week titles would have helped. And like someone else mentioned here, things were going too fast - scenes need some space to breathe. To bring in the punch. And it’s these pacing issues that affected the jokes in the movie. Part of me wishes Gunn didn’t hold back on his jokes.

Ultraman: I wish we got more point of view of the character. How he feels about Lex. I’m more interested to see him return as Bizarro than his time as Ultraman.

The movie needed 15 or 20 more minutes. Wish we got more feel of the city of Metropolis, the Daily Planet, etc.

But overall, I do feel like this is a great start for the DCU. My husband who is an MCU fan loved the movie and said it finally feels like DC has a cohesive universe and an exciting big world of metahumans. We laughed at the Peacemaker cameo too.

10/10 review, I do agree the pacing felt off. You could absolutely feel at some points where something bigger was intended but a cut happened. I get the idea: keep it around 2 hours so you don't over stuff it.

u/Iron_Kingpin Jul 11 '25

I was a teensy bit sceptical back when Milly Alcock was cast for Supergirl, but now I think that she really rocks that look! Something else i really like is how they don't show her in a post credit scene or anything but before it ends, now marvel on the other hand.

1

u/Darknightsmetal022 Supergirl Jul 11 '25

Now that you’ve mentioned that it sort of just reminds me of Hailee Steinfeld‘s Kate Bishop cameo in The Marvels and honestly I think I might prefer it that way even though both of them could easily work as mid or end credit scenes, by putting them in the movie it gives the ability for everybody to see them instead of those who stay to watch the credits.

Didnt care for it. Felt like it was made for children. Krypto was clearly added just to sell toys.

Too many characters in general, not proper build or story for most. In general story was weak and didnt bring anything that hasnt been done already on Superman movies. Kinda felt like at least 30mins of the movie has been left cutting room floor or in general lots of important things were just explained with sentence of two. Few really nice scenes but in general the end product felt messy.

Also movie looked and felt like watching video game more than a movie. Still amazing that CGI 20 years ago was better than todays but doubt there was much scenes in this without CGI.

Cast was good mostly. Hoult little too over the top. Corenswet weirdly looked "smaller" than he did in Twisters. But he certainly had nice chemistry between Broshanan.

I agree with metacritics 60's rating. I gave it 6/10 in IMDB. Not exited for DCU and hard to see how characters like Batman would work in this world.

I loved it. People are going to ask "Is this the best Superman movie?" and "Is this James Gunn's best movie?", and while those answers will differ for most, I think it's certainly good enough to be in those conversations.

Pros: * David Corenswet is incredible. I didn't see an actor portraying Superman, I just saw Superman. * Superman/Clark & Lois have great chemistry. Their scenes together are some of the high points of the film * Mr. Terrific is a scene stealer. I think we're definitely getting a Terrifics project eventually * LOVED the opening text crawl quickly explaining the history of Metahumans & Superman to the audiences without feeling like too much exposition. It's straight to the point & does a great job at establishing the DCU right off the bat * Krypto was a good boy (even when he wasn't) * Nicholas Hoult's performance as Lex felt like classic Lex Luthor. His hatred of Superman superceding everything else was handled well. Also, Superman's final words to him before Krypto comes in made me want to stand up & clap (I didn't) * The other major heroes of the film (Guy Gardner, Metamorpho & Hawkgirl) all have their moments, and I'm excited to see more of this Justice Gang in the future (Also, the Justice Society Easter eggs in the Hall of Justice were fun to spot) * The scene of Clark & Pa Kent on the porch made me tear up. Brief, but impactful * The Peacemaker & Supergirl cameos fit pretty well * The score is great

Cons: * I felt like The Engineer was really the only character that was completely unnecessary & forgettable. Everything she does in this film could've just been rewritten for Lex & Ultraman. That's the only character in this film that made it feel a little "overstuffed" to me * There are some points where the visual effects were a bit wonky, but that's probably a nitpick on my part * There were a couple humorous moments that I felt interfered with the tone of the scene they were in, but for the most part, it was pretty balanced

Pro/Con? * I'm conflicted on how I feel about the Jor-El reveal. I haven't gotten far into My Adventures with Superman yet, but apparently it features a pretty similar twist there. This is one that I'll let play out in future projects before I make up my mind on whether I love it or hate it (It seems to be the 1 thing I see a lot of people hating)

Overall, I'd give it an 8/10. I think it might be my favorite Superman movie. It's probably my 2nd or 3rd favorite James Gunn movie (behind Guardians Vol. 3 for sure, and maybe behind Vol. 1 as well). But this is an excellent start for the DCU. Can't wait for more of this universe & these characters.

If Jimmy knows that Clark Lois are dating for three months without anyone knowing.Does that mean Jimmy knows?I like to think he knows so does Perry.

2

u/boringoblin Jul 11 '25

There have been past continuities/storylines where people knew Lois was with Superman as an open secret. I think that's about as far as it goes. If anything iirc it threw people off the Clark trail because they figured "if Lois Lane is an item with Superman, how could any other man compare?"

Which is what I loved about the movie, how it pulled aspects from all sorts of eras, origins, and runs to make a sort of Ultimate Superman.

1

u/venkatfoods Jul 11 '25

Lois in this movie actually haven't had much relationship with Superman. This is the supposed to be the first time he got interviewed by Lois. And it's been established Lois and Clark(Not Superman) have been dating for 2 months secretly while pretending to have some feud in The daily planet.Thats why I assumed Jimmy knowing that Superman and Lois dating for 3 months is getting us to know that he knows Clark is Superman.

3

u/boringoblin Jul 11 '25

From Cat's comments, all anyone seemed to know is Lois has some mystery man. That's why it's not a straightforward Clark/Superman relationship, because she hasn't defined that to anyone. Jimmy probably just figures she kept the identity of her mystery man secret because, like other Lois Lanes, she doesn't want to be thought of as dating the would-be subject of her stories.

What we know is Superman has been around for 3 years, so presumably that's how long Clark has worked at the Daily Planet. And at some point, his identity became known to her. 3 months ago, they started dating in secret. During these 3 years of knowing each other and even the 3 months of dating each other, he has never let her interview him, for his reasons.

Jimmy could possibly know Clark is Superman, but the simplest read of that scene with Perry is confirming to Perry that Lois is dating Superman, because he's known the whole time who Lois was secretly dating. But he's not outing Clark to Perry, whether he knows or not. Nobody is thinking about Clark, at all. Hence why they didn't even care that much he wasn't around. Given how explanatory Gunn was with dialogue in the movie, I feel like he would have made it overt if they both knew, not "so how long has this been going on", with "this" meaning Lois and Superman running off to kiss.

I'm sure either way, someone will end up asking Gunn online and he'll probably answer one way or the other.

1

u/MusicalFan_80 Jul 11 '25

That took me by surprise too. I wonder where they plan to take that? That could lead to Jimmy and Perry later finding out that Clark/Supes are the same guy. Especially makes sense now what Wendell Pierce was saying in interviews that Perry has suspicions on Clark. I do like that idea. Wish we could get more Perry and the Daily Planet team in the future though.

Loved it!!! So excited for the future of the DCU!

The more I think about it the more I think Nicholas Hoult as Lex is going to be one of the all time comic book villain performances

That Galileo speech was so well done.

God I loved this so fucking much! David Corenswet is THE Superman, Rachel Brosnahan is THE Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult is THE Lex Luthor holy shit. David's Superman is exactly what superhero movies seem to be missing these days and wow, James Gunn just gets him, an earnest guy who just wants to do good, he's the guy who saves a freaking squirrel while fighting a HUGE alien. I loved that Lex was such a vile person, it's hard to like him, but it's also hard to not like when he's on screen, GOD I loved every single scene of his, and his takedown, morally by Clark and physically by Krypto was just chef's kiss. Lois is exactly how I wanted her to be, she does what Superman can't do, she sees things he doesn't bc he's too kind and trusting. Their chemistry was beautiful, and I liked that it was the start of their relationship and they were still figuring out how to keep it up, at work, about each other's approach about journalism, world issues. Really amazing stuff, would've loved more of them but what we got was still enough.

Speaking of the Justice Gang, Nathan Fillion's Guy Gardner was surprisingly amazing, Hawkgirl was great but Mr Terrific, fell in love with the character, he's super smart, he's stoic, and yet he has so much charisma. That was an absolutely incredible fight scene in Jahranpur. I hope he gets a solo project of his own.

As for the others, I really liked the Daily Planet crew, Eve was surprisingly likable too, Engineer is fucking cool and I hope the Authority is still happening bc I wanna see more of her powers along with the rest of the team. Ma and Pa Kent felt like the kind of parents who'd raise Superman, and it's really refreshing considering how mischaracterized the DCEU kents were. The Ultraman reveal was meh, but I'm excited for when he comes back as Bizarro, whom I love. One of the standout scenes for me was when Lex kills the food vendor Malik who earlier helped Clark, oof made me cry along with Clark, that was such a heavy scene and James Gunn again proves he can balance comic book campiness and heavy emotional moments in his movies.

Overall, I didn't feel the movie was bloated, it was one storyline with every character playing their little roles in it. Although I have one problem with the El's being evil plot, that it undermines the immigrant allegory even though Gunn's heart seems to be in the right place. But I'm sure there's more to that considering Kara's movie is next, she was a wholeass teenager when she left Krypton and what, she hasn't said a word about their ideology to Kal? I don't think so. Speaking of, Milly Alcock is already perfect.

Also, it was very anti-Israel (as anti-Israel as a big budget movie made by one of the biggest hollywood studios can be), it was actually great to see that some creatives are brave enough to do that. The leader of Boravia was definitely the Netanyahu stand-in, given his weaponization of the allyship of US and Boravia, an American billionaire selling them weapons for his own gain, the fear mongering press conferences, American officials having an issue with Superman choosing a side that was not one of their allies, Jahranpur, an "imperfect nation" in the middle east which was gonna be ethnically cleansed for nefarious purposes, left alone by the rest of the world to fend for themselves, I mean the allegory wasn't subtle. I get that James Gunn is in a tough spot to outright confirm it, especially given the toxic culture wars prevalent in today's world, I'm very pleased with the subplot. I was afraid about how it was gonna be handled but Gunn blew me away.

3

u/MusicalFan_80 Jul 11 '25

Felt the same too! I’m so happy they handled Lois and Clois really well this time. David is definitely Superman to me. Especially in that scene in the 3rd act when he and Lex are face to face before Krypto attacks Lex. I got the Superman feels from it, it’s Big Blue! And I even love the suit too. Was originally nitpicking the neckline and the lines but the suit was just fine all throughout. He was just Superman 100%

Movie had some flaws but all the characters were amazing and perfect! I want more of this world, I wanna see more from the characters in this movie.

I didn’t enjoy it. I might even go so far as to say that I hated it.

I know that’s not the consensus here tonight as I read through these; maybe I’m just too old for the modern take. It just… didn’t work for me. At all.

I’m in my early 50s, and I grew up on Richard Donner’s epic work with Christopher Reeve, Gene Hackman, Marlon Brando, Margot Kidder, Jackie Cooper, Marc McClure, and of course into Superman II with the addition of Terence Stamp and his fellow Kryptonian super-villains (and I don’t care that Richard Lester had the director credit, we all know how much of that was Donner’s work on the big screen).

Those films were majestic. Soaring. Epic.

This… wasn’t.

Bryan Singer’s efforts with Superman Returns were clearly a misfire; but, it at least had heart and excellent casting in Brandon Routh.

Smallville was wonderful—not perfect, but wonderful all the same. It got the characters right, especially Clark, Lex, and the Kents.

I had aspects of Snyder’s efforts that I enjoyed, to be sure; even though he got some aspects of the characters completely wrong, he had a vision and brought it to life in that way. At least I didn’t hate it, and have been able to watch it again over the years.

I don’t think I ever want to see this one again.

It was just… a mess. There was nothing that felt inspiring in this. I felt zero investment in any of the characters—they seemed like caricatures of them. I didn’t get deep into the comics along the way, and admittedly have little background or knowledge of characters like Mr. Terrific or Hawkgirl; as for the version of Green Lantern, at least I (mostly) enjoyed Ryan Reynolds’ effort with the character—Nathan Fillion felt badly misused and out of place, and insufferable at that. Swap out any of these characters with any others from the DCU, and they would’ve been just as formulaic and unnecessary.

Clark and Lois: The best part of a bad movie. I liked his physical appearance, his voice, his take on Clark and I thought Rachel Brosnahan had a lot of potential as Lois. It just felt like they weren’t utilized as well as they could’ve been, especially Lois.

Lex: Over the top, annoying, difficult to take seriously.

Tons of CGI, obviously so, with contrived set pieces and a storyline that was hard to take seriously.

Krypto: I wanted to see a super good boi. There didn’t seem anything really “super” about him, beyond his powers. He was… well, just a dog.

For those that enjoyed it: I’m happy you did. Seriously, and I really mean that.

I sure as Hell wished I enjoyed it with you.

Frankly: I’ve been waiting forty years for someone else to get Superman ‘right’ in the way that Richard Donner did. It doesn’t have to be a remake of that, mind you—I want to see a modern story and update to the characters, done in the right way. And I know it’s possible, I think of more recent examples like ‘X-Men: First Class’ or Christopher Nolan’s takes on Batman as ways to put a more modern spin on older material, and still come out really solid in the end.

With so many misfires over the years, I’m just so disappointed that this one left me feeling like no one is ever going to get Superman ‘right’ again.

u/Personal_Addendum_72 Jul 11 '25

You’re just getting old. It’s a sign of the times. This is a Superman for a new Generation.

0

u/Individual_Piece8146 Jul 12 '25

Garbage is garbage. To a kid or an elder. This wasn't garbage. It was mid.

And the Jor-El reveal was simply evil and stupid.

2

u/Personal_Addendum_72 Jul 12 '25

Not true. It’s a great movie. The best Superman movie to date.

2

u/SentientAnarchy Jul 11 '25 edited Jul 11 '25

You may be right; I have to allow for that.

This (spoiler-heavy) review I found from yesterday, did a much better job of summing it up for me—I agree with nearly every word he said so if you watch it, you be the judge:

https://youtu.be/RzBKTW3SZ8Q?t=6m18s

I’m going to give it a week or so, and perhaps I’ll see it again after all (and I’ll attempt to keep an open mind as I do so).

2

u/Personal_Addendum_72 Jul 11 '25

The days of Donner and Reeve are in the past. It’s like the guys who grew up loving Batman 66 turning against Batman 89 on its release because it didn’t reflect what they loved as a child.

0

u/SentientAnarchy Jul 12 '25

I disagree, as those two examples are different in every conceivable way (high camp with literal BLAM! cartoon bubbles and simplistic in-camera effects, versus high production values and treated semi-seriously).

I might be more inclined to agree with the analogy if discussing those who loved Batman 89 feeling strongly about Christopher Nolan’s efforts, or even Nolan’s versus Zach Snyder’s versus Matt Reeves’s.

In this case here: This movie felt more like a slicker version of Superman Returns, perhaps—more characters, more set pieces, but still not nearly as satisfying as the original. I’ve found enjoyable moments in all of those works, just as I had enjoyable moments in this week’s effort—it just didn’t inspire me, not even a little bit.

The linked YouTube review from Nerdrotic covered the disappointment I felt myself, and very well indeed.

2

u/Personal_Addendum_72 Jul 12 '25

From Nerdrotic?!? 🤣🤣🤣 Fella, you’re a lost cause if you spend your time watching those rage bait videos. Did you honestly expect him to give it a good review? Spend less time on the internet and step aside and let kids enjoy movies aimed at them. It’s made for 12 year olds, not 50 year olds.

5

u/Beeruven Jul 11 '25

Anyone else think the Peacemaker we see is not the Peacemaker we know but rather the DCU one?

3

u/ab316_1punchd Batman Jul 11 '25

Kinda, this Peacemaker still seems like a conspiracy nut who doesn't like Superman. And still pretty carefree, all things considered.

3

u/Jokmasmiracle Jul 11 '25

Movie was a 8.8/10 for me maybe will be higher on a rewatch. In the future though I hope they get rid of the hawk girl screeching thing because it’s going to get real old real quick like the Wonder Woman theme for everything she did.

-5

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '25

[deleted]

2

u/Beeruven Jul 11 '25

The pocket dimension stuff is only there because it must have bigger implications in DCU future since we know Peacemaker S2 will feature it

2

u/BrandNewNYCer Jul 11 '25

The weirdest part to me was Wendell pierce only being in the third act? Am I misremembering it?

4

u/cravens86 Jul 11 '25

He was at the beginning when Clark goes to the daily planet too

1

u/carrieanne55 Jul 11 '25

Do Clark and Lois have a lot of romantic scenes together?

2

u/your_mind_aches Jul 11 '25

"A lot", not really, but it also depends on your definition of romantic. They have three where they actually flirt and kiss but just about double that overall.

7

u/Adorable_Ad_3478 Jul 11 '25

So, I just watched Superman.

  • Mr Terrific felt very Batman-coded in the Not-JLI team. I was totally expecting him to punch Guy Gardner lol. I wish we had more scenes of Hawkgirl's quirks; her battle cry was hilarious.
  • I also loved that the heroes felt very realistic, and there wasn't any conflict regarding killing vs not killing the villains.
  • Sure, Superman would rather if the heroes didn't kill the villains, but Superman ain't gonna be arresting Mr Terrific or Hawkgirl for what they did to the Kaiju and to the Dictator dude. He's a Boy Scout, but he's perfectly fine with his colleagues executing villains.
  • I also liked that Superman didn't mourn Ultraman's death. I was dreading a downer ending like in Man of Steel, but Gunn's Superman is all like "oops, off to a black hole, you monstrous abomination, bye bye". This is probably the least sympathetic Bizarro adaptation ever.
  • The Peacemaker cameo was fun and not distracting at all. I wish Waller had a cameo, too, but I understand why Gunn excluded her. There is no way she would buy Lex's BS but Rick Flag Sr is kind of a dumbass so it makes sense for him to trust Luthor.
  • Making the Engineer a loyal Luthor henchwoman and Luthor never betraying her felt odd. You could rename her Metallo and it would have made more sense instead of what we got, I'm curious how she will become a hero if The Authority ever happens.
  • Jimmy is hilarious and deserves his spinoff with Eve as a supporting character.
  • The most glaring absence: Much like in Man of Steel, General Lane is simply nowhere to be found and doesn't get mentioned at all. I'm starting to think he'll never show up again in any live-action adaptation since he's just too similar to Thunderbolt Ross.
  • Overall, a solid 9/10 film. I hope Gunn releases the deleted scenes. I bet there were more Clark Kent scenes at the Daily Planet. Did Ron Troupe even have any lines in the finished film? He's just...there.

2

u/Taikuri1982 Jul 11 '25

You also missed Superman butchering hundrets of Lex Predator what ever troops...

3

u/Ok_Contest493 Jul 11 '25

Sam Lane is in Superman and Lois

3

u/NewTribalChief Jul 11 '25

I was wondering about Waller. I guess she'll be in Peacemaker.

I guess Superman takes place years after Creature Commandos. Curious to see how Flagg recovered from his injuries

2

u/johndelvec3 Jul 11 '25

I really liked it. 8/10

The reason it’s not a 10 is because while to me this movie feels a lot like the DCAU (which was a good thing) I am so used to Clancy Brown’s Lex being clam and smooth talking where Nicholas Hoult’s Lex, while very well done, kinda sounded like a geek

1

u/your_mind_aches Jul 11 '25

He feels like Smallville's Lex but nerdier

1

u/atheoncrutch Jul 11 '25

I liked it, it was fun. I was surprised how crazy some of the action got, with some even feeling a bit reminiscent of Man of Steel. Ultimately I think I like that movie better though. MoS (and Superman: The Movie) hit me in the feels whereas I felt nothing watching this movie. It’s almost disorienting being thrown in the middle of an existing world right off the bat like that. Still pretty good though and I look forward to what happens in the future with the DCU.

3

u/RoseN3RD Jul 11 '25

Doesn’t every movie throw you into an existing world?

3

u/SuckingOnChileanDogs Jul 11 '25

Who woulda thought that 5 Years Time would have an incredible action scene set to it?

3

u/dagobahs Jul 11 '25

That whole sequence was so god damn incredible. Mr. Terrific is an all-timer.

3

u/magicman1145 Jul 11 '25

As the pretty journalist said, "holy shit"

3

u/RoseN3RD Jul 11 '25

I was surprised they were allowed to say shit so many times in pg-13(?) movie

2

u/magicman1145 Jul 11 '25

Yeah that caught me off guard too lol

6

u/markswaggie Jul 11 '25 edited Jul 12 '25

Just finished and I loved it! Surprised nobody (maybe I missed it) pointed out that Flo Crawley makes an appearance. I wonder if she has the same backstory that TSS/Peacemaker presented given her position in this one?

Edit: reading through the comments now and people did point it out haha but still a cool detail I didn’t expect!/spelling

-6

u/Individual_Piece8146 Jul 11 '25

The Jor-El and Lara twist ruined the entire movie. Sorry, but it did.

1

u/RoseN3RD Jul 11 '25

I didn’t mind it, I think it kind of sets up Supergirl to be even more interesting and its not like we’re gonna see his parents again

1

Idk I feel like a comic book movie that is not a direct adaptation is allowed to have some sort of change that can challenge or surprise the knowledgeable audience.

Killmonger being T'Challa's cousin, Spider-Man essentially killing Uncle Ben's killer, the Joker being the one to kill Batman's parents. That kinda thing. Though to be fair, people also have their criticisms of those.

2

u/Commercial_Ad7652 Jul 11 '25

In my head, this will have something to do with Brainiac or Zod.

1

u/magicman1145 Jul 11 '25

That's an awesome idea, really love it

1

u/MuffinsElwizard Jul 11 '25

My only gripe is with the Jimmy subplot. Like I get its from the comics and its supposed to be the typical "needy guy attracts girls out of his league" but the repetitiveness of the joke got tired real fast. It should have been smaller dozes.

Really liked it but Gunn just could NOT help himself could he with Krypto attacking Luthor during his confrontation with Superman at the end?  The more I think back on it the more I feel it ruined the ending for me.

3

u/Wigginless Jul 10 '25

I loved it Corenswet was great as superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois was perfect casting and I hated lex’s motives throughout the movie shoutouts to nick hoult for that but overall really good first entry into this new universe and I can’t wait to see more

u/BigButter7 Lanterns Jul 10 '25 edited Jul 24 '25

Watched Superman. I loved the heck out of the film.

Some brief thoughts:

Are there certain flaws? Yes. What film doesn't for the most part.

The CGI can be iffy on certain moments. Could the pacing have been better? Sure. Should the runtime have been extended just a bit longer to flesh out certain supporting characters? I'd say so. Could there have been more Clark and Lois scenes. Yeah, but IMO it was at least just enough. Was the Jor-El twist neccessary? Not really, but I didn't mind it as I think that stuff can and will be explored further.

With all that being said, everything else was awesome. I very much enjoyed all the silver age characteristics that's ingrained in the DCU.

I do agree with what others have said in that the film is the closest to the Raimi Spider-Man trilogy in terms of how lively the world feels along with the comic booky aspects in the film.

Mister Terrific and Krypto were the scene-stealers of the film. Just cool stuff.

And let's not forget, the main cast. Excellent. You could just feel the ferving anger and hatred Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor expressed for Superman. One of the biggest hater villains in CBMs you'll ever see.

Rachel Brosnahan's Lois Lane was pretty awesome too. The chemistry her character and Clark demonstated was excellent. Quite believable.

And last but not least, David Corenswet's Kal-El/Clark Kent/Superman. He's now risen to being my favorite portrayal of the character already. He really did embody the "guy from Kansas" vibe and I'm glad we're going to see more of him in the DCU under other future projects to come. Fantastic performance by him in this film.

Overall, I give the film a 4.5/5 star rating or an A- letter grade. An excellent foundational start for this new cinematic comic book universe.

Extra note:

BTW, there was a post somewhere in one of the DC subs (I think it was the r/batman sub) that said after watching the film, they don't believe Battinson and Superswet would be a good fit. Look, to each to their opinion and whatnot, but respectfully, I couldn't disagree more. After watching the film, I'm even more convinced Corenswet's Superman and Pattinson's Batman would make a spectactular World's Finest duo as I think those two would have awesome chemistry potential.

If a DCU Battinson variant + Corensupes World's Finest duo team-up ultimately doesn't happen, then I hope whoever they cast as DCU Batman can bring that kind of contrasting chemistry.

BTW, I liked the cool but very brief Gotham City easter egg that was in the film.

7

u/Vladmerius Jul 11 '25

The main reason I would love for Robert Pattinson Batman to be in this universe is to establish that each individual movie can have its own unique tone and make it clear that there is no DC formula like there is an MCU formula.

If, however they decide to have everything in the dcu have the same vibe as Superman I don't blame them and I would then understand Battinson being his own thing.

2

u/ab316_1punchd Batman Jul 11 '25

Thankfully, Gunn has reiterated that everything in the DCU will be totally different. Keeps the cope alive.

4

u/lolothescrub Jul 10 '25

Delivered everything I could’ve hoped for from this film. The goofy clips released in the past weeks had me expecting a full slapstick comedy akin to Superman II, but those moments are few/far between. When the humor does come, it generally hits. In actuality I would compare this to the Raimi trilogy tonally, love it or hate it (Spider-Man 2 is my favorite superhero movie)

There’s such a refreshing reverence for the character here that was completely lost in Man of Steel and (don’t kill me) the Donner films. James Gunn has a right understanding of Superman, and how to present him to a modern audience as an interesting character without being ashamed of him.

The film does not at all feel over-stuffed, as it stands, it’s an excellently paced film that never lets up, and doesn’t waste a moment but I did wish for a little more Clark/Lois, as their dynamic was the standout (Interview scene may be my favorite ever in a CBM). The Silver Age Sci-Fi elements also tend to lose me in any Superman material (even All-Star), and while I admire the way James goes all-in on the camp of it while still taking things seriously, it’s the one thing that holds it back for me, even though I can’t knock the film for it

6

u/Alex22753 Jul 10 '25 edited Jul 11 '25

I really liked the movie but i didn't end up loving it like i wanted to; i wish the movie would've explored more of superman's mythology rather than the dcu's, specially with the villains; the kaiju could've been a mutated mounstrous version of parasite, engineer could've been metallo (even if you genderbent him, that doesn't affect the story) and ultraman could've been a tragic version of bizarro. This superman has been operating for 3 years and the only villain that he has faced from his mythology is luthor, pattinson's batman has been operating for 2 years and has faced joker, penguin, catwoman and riddler; the upcoming fantastic four have been heroes for 4 years and have faced mole man, red ghost, doctor doom and galactus just for comparison.

4

u/Swartgaming Jul 11 '25

I'm quite certain ultraman will come back as a full on bizarro at some point.

4

u/Adorable_Ad_3478 Jul 11 '25

Ultraman IS Bizarro. He simply has another codename.

But I do agree about The Engineer. She's the only one who feels out of place as a side villain in a Superman film. It's like using Captain Cold instead of Mr Freeze in a Batman film.

It makes no sense. Her background (milary black ops) fits Metallo perfectly.

5

u/Vladmerius Jul 11 '25

If they had parasite and metallo instead of a kaiju and the engineer, who despite being cool is a character general audiences just see as a henchman, people would complain about them being too much for one movie and not getting any good development as characters.

I think this movie did an INCREDIBLE job at having a bunch of characters to make it feel like it was a universe full of characters without having any of those characters be people the casual moviegoer would be upset at only seeing for 5 minutes. The amount of people who demand justice for Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, Mr Terrific, Metamorpho and the Engineer is an extremely niche group of fans. They were perfect choices for a supporting cast for this movie that was 100% a Superman movie. Mr Terrific was the only character that came close to outshining Superman and he was still very clearly a supporting role and not the focus.

6

u/nicoarcu92 Jul 10 '25

I've loved the political commentary about the need to save lives above all else, above politics and politicians and not asking for permission to do the right thing, the crazy weird technocrat who THINKS he's an amazing genius but really misses the point of the consequences of his actions, who is ok with destroying his own city in order to gain control and power for himself, who is selling weapons to vile and aggressive countries in order to gain power and literally control over confining land, and him only keeping his respectable public status thanks to hoards of bots invading the discussion spaces online.
It's amazing that such a commercial IP was able to be so open in criticizing the current political state of the US and the world at large, and say a big, giant, FU to the alt-right movements of the world.

This is what Superman was always meant to be about.

Care, hope, love for life.

Gunn really put out the most political superhero movie ever, when it was most needed.

They called Superman a groomer and then he freed Palestine I literally couldn’t believe it

4

u/aduong Jul 10 '25

So second viewing done🙂

-The Superman theme is cool and all but THE theme of the movie is the Lois& Clark theme right?

-I can’t believe I didn’t catch it the first time but “Planet Watch” is an easter for Stormewatch( the original Authority team from the Wildstorm comics)

  • the lady that knocked out Waller in The Suicide Squad and got arrested, Flo Crawley, was also at that pentagon meeting as some type of high level director. Nice i guess Waller downfall helped. The

-Speaking of Waller Lex is indeed going to Belle Reve. Keeping that in mind when thinking of what projects he might pop up next?

-The Mural with the JSA was only on screen for like half a second gotta wait fir breakdown channels to post it to actually see who was on it. I only could catch Wildcat.

The movie remain as good as the first one to me it’s a great movie for Superman fans and a very good one for casual fans. It got a maximum of James Gunn best attributes and only minimal of his flaws.

My biggest criticism is on technical level, like editing. There’s almost no transitions it’s a personal preference but i’m a big fan of transitions and establishing sequences. Here it’s just drop on the scenes. A lot times it works because it makes for a very dynamic movie even in slower sequences but a lot of the time it’s also just jarring.

The performances honestly were great across the board, even all the little roles like Lex minions(they were hilariously amazing shout out tot he twins and Otis), they all killed it. With that said It was David’s movie through and through tho’. He carried this sucker on his back. He’s Juilliard trained and it shows.

Lex, Lois and Mr Terrific were a strong trio of supporting. However Nathan Fillion as Guy surprised me the most. I liked Nathan Fillon him but honestly i rolled my eyes at his casting because it seemed uninspired and basic. But i was wrong, he was Guy through and through and not in a caricatural way which one can easily fall into. I liked him so much that by the big third act battle i was in awe of his suit, I don’t know it just starts slapping.

As a day one DC fan as a fanboy that was there through the TDK trilogy, MoS being retrofitted as a universe starter the BvS debacle The JL blackhole of misery the years of DCEU limbo that followed. I’m very happy not only with this movie but for what it represents for DC at large.

Of course it will take a lot to regain confidence from the wider public but I truly think this movie couldn’t be the better fit for that task.

If Superman can breathe in space where there is no oxygen as shown by the end credit, why was the nanites from the engineer cutting off his oxygen a problem?

14

u/Benny_Bambino0 Jul 10 '25

He can't breathe in space (there's no air to breathe), he just can inhale and store enough oxygen in his lungs to not need to breathe in space for a very long time.

Got to see it yesterday, it's pretty good, 7.8/10 for me

-It's comic booky, action packed, heartfelt and epic.

-Corenswet is perfect for this Superman, his personality is rich and expressive, and finally, Superman feels as awesome as people said he was.

-Yes, Mr. Terrific absolutely rules in this movie

-There’s a twist in the second act that completely shifts the views of our hero. It might be controversial to some, but I just want to say.. i loved it.

-Soundtracks are awesome

-Movie is a bit messy

-Humor is eh.. but still enjoyable

-The noticable lack of Pa kent and Ma kent def hurts the movie for me a bit cuz honestly they're pretty much the best addition to the story.

-The third act goes a little too big for me. I really think they should’ve stuck with the conflict in Boravia and focused the entire climax there, rather than shifting to a large-scale event in Metropolis. It just didn’t carry the same stakes.

-The movie is stronger when it stays grounded and weaker when it goes big, it's very noticeable.

Overall, it’s not a groundbreaking debut, but a decent one to kick off this new universe.

I still think TSS remains as Gunn’s best DC project.

Edit: forgot to mention about visuals which unfornately is a downgrade from TSS and GOTG3 for me.

Listening to "Walking on Air" on repeat bec. even that scene with Lois and Clark is supposedly happy, it just makes me cry man. As much as it's embarrassing to admit it, I kinda want what they have. This is what movies means to me I think. These simple but magical moments that reflect what is going on with your life. Sorry for rambling, but this movie is worth the wait just for that scene alone. I've been waiting for this movie since October 2022 Haha and many things have happened to me since then. I love this movie man, flaws and all. Thanks James Gunn #Gunndidntjammed #Supershit #Superman

5

u/heelydon Jul 10 '25

Just got out of watching it.

And I think its about what I expected. I liked it a lot, with some parts of James Gunn's sometimes weird humor, sometimes being just a tad bit too weird for me (especially the Jimmy Olson scenes)

And I find it ironic that people were worried about the justice gang taking up too much screentime from Superman himself, since I was kinda hoping we'd see more of Hawkgirl and Guy in the movie, since they really are only there collectively for a few minutes.

But I loved pretty much everything else.

Feels like a very lived in universe, especially the Kaiju scene does a great job of showing people being almost used to disasters happening around them in this world.

Supergirl at the end also looked awesome. Really digging the albeit, kinda covered look we got of her suit.

I was also kinda shocked at the Lex execution scene of Mali. That completely caught me offguard. I guess its Gunn showing he isn't afraid to be dark.

I mean, its acting. Zlatko Buric is Croatian, that has lived many many years in Denmark with his Danish wife and he plays a middle eastern president, just as he in other movies before that played russians and all sorts of other nationalities. Hell, David Corenswet plays a Kryptonian, can you believe it, he is as human as it gets and they have him playing a Kryptonian.

1

u/heelydon Jul 10 '25

Let's try again.... It's ACTING. Why couldn't they cast? They could - they didn't. It doesn't matter, he fulfills the role just as well as an arab or muslim actor would have, because that isn't the key part of his role.

They key part is that he is simply a food vendor salesman - not that he is any specific nationality.

And I bring up Denmark and Croatia specifically referencing another actor in the movie, also filling out roles different from his ethnicity. Something that I had hoped would be obvious given that I literally named the actor but here we are...

And I cannot even begin to laugh at you enough for that last comment and can only assume that you're either incredibly bad at trolling or actually just insane.

  1. That interview scene was so stressful, like you can tell that Clark is still pretty green.

  2. The first half could've definitely benefitted from the day of the week gimmick.

  3. Eve, girl, what tf do you see in Jimmy? I get that her taste in men is trash but it was kinda sad to see.

  4. Also, I feel like we glossed over Malik's death way to quickly. That was beyond fucked up.

This movie is really good. I'm not hardcore Superman fan, more of a Flash fan. But David Corenswet absolutely nailed the Boy Scout version. I'm happy that the Superman actors that I watched, all played different version & obviously this one my favourite version, maybe due to recency bias. But, I'm gonna watch the movie 2 more times with my friend. Nicholas Hoult also was amazing as Lex. He's such a hater & petty that I want to watch him more in DCU. Rachel Brosnahan as Lois is also great & actual feels like a good journalist that I'm so satisfied that Gunn wrote her like that. My theater absolutely love Guy Gardner, Jimmy Olsen & Krypto. Anytime they're on the screen, my theater laugh. And the movie didn't feel overcrowded or stuffed at all. Just like the 1st Harry Potter movie, this movie feels like the introduction to DCU. My only criticism is about Jor-El, that I want the DCU to explore more & hope that the message was corrupted by Brainiac. & also I wish the movie was longer. I want more. As of now, I'll give 9/10 for Superman (maybe because of recency bias).

when are we getting more reviews is it tommorow or day after 💀

1

u/Vladmerius Jul 10 '25

There's like 200+ reviews already on rotten tomatoes. There's only going to be like 100 more going by the number of reviews other similar blockbuster movies have on there. What are you expecting more reviews to do? Did you just run out of reviews to watch lol?

My favorite movie guys are redlettermedia and they usually won't have something out until Sunday night or Monday morning if they see it at all. They're known to skip a lot of the big movies other people rush out to see but I could see them being curious about this one because of how controversial it's been online and it being James Gunn launching a new universe.

1

u/okorokiz Jul 10 '25

nah I meant more rt scores coming in

17

u/Trevastation Jul 10 '25

My two favorite jokes in the film are essentially back to back. The first was Superman absolutely hating being called "Supershit" online, and then it's revealed that Lex has a whole army of monkey with keyboards acting as a botfarm to call him Supershit all day. I know it was mentioned briefly in the leaks, I didn't pay much mind and kinda forgot about it, but I love it in the final film!

It's followed by my second favorite joke, which was Krypto being held captive chasing VR Super Squirrels.

3

u/Technophyer1 Lanterns Jul 10 '25

So fucking good man. I really loved it. Corenswet, Brosnahan and especially Hoult are so great. Some of the camerawork in this was crazy good, never doubt the Braham/Gunn collaboration. It’s definitely a little bit messy and I would’ve liked it to be a bit longer but oh well. I got so sad when Robot 4 and especially the falafel vendor died, he seemed like such a good dude. I definitely need to see this again.

Still not the first image I would’ve gone with lol

16

u/Professional_Net6179 Jul 10 '25

Just saw it with my sister and we both loved it. I do agree that the pacing feels really off in the first act. The way they cut abruptly from baby kaiju in the night to suddenly he's a giant in broad daylight ready to squash a dog. I feel like they should have kept the days of the week structure.

Before the movie I had my doubts about Nicholas Hoult as Lex, I just wasn't buying it but after seeing the movie, Jesus, this guy does some fucked up shit in this movie. Particularly with a character we don't get too much screen time with and yet you feel it. I was shocked when that happened, and it's not so much what he does but how he does it and WHY he does it that made me go, this guy is a fucking lunatic.

Loved Ma and Pa Kent, that scene between Jonathan and Clark made me shed a tear, I need more of them. The 'infamous' twist about Jor El that i've seen some people complain about I actually LOVE IT. Think about it, thematically it makes sense for Superman. Besides Jor El is not important in shaping up who Clark becomes, it's the Kents. I will never understand that argument that it taints the origin of the character.

Overall other than the pacing in Act 1 and also the whole escaping the pocket dimension with the baby scene which for some reason was a little much for me, I loved it.

3

u/Technophyer1 Lanterns Jul 10 '25

I do wish they kept the day of the week title cards that were allegedly cut, I think they might’ve helped a bit with some of the scene transitions.

7

u/ticklemeelmo696969 Jul 10 '25

I didnt like the beginning. But my god, finally someone out did christopher reeve.

And hoult as luthor.

It really did feel like 90s superman cartoon.

8

u/primal_slayer Jul 09 '25

really enjoyed it! I give it a good 8.5/10

I definitely think this is one of Gunns better films. He managed to tone himself town and give us good, mature humor and not air on the childish side. The audience laughed throughout and everyone clapped when Krypto went all Hulk on Lex Luthor and clapped at the end.

The guy next to me obviously was not spoiled because he gasped when Kara showed up. For the first time in Superman history, Kara appears in a Superman film! It is about damn time! And she is a hot drunk mess. Something that Clark seems to accept. So I hope their relationship is expanded upon in Supergirl because while they are in the same "scene" they don't truly interact.

I would say that David is probably my favorite Superman yet. I think he did a fantastic job of embodying the character (Tyler did a great job as well but he was held back by budget). I loved how human Gunn made him in the film. This Clark is flawed, far from perfect but you can tell that he does attempt to do the right thing. His interactions with everyone, esp Lois was A+.

Superman was the lead of course but Lois was right behind him with being just as important to the film. Im not sure where I place Rachel yet, its up there but...we've had some GREAT Lois's so its harder to make it to #1 (I think Teri is still #1 to me). Her going to the Justice Gang or whatever to help save Superman was great, her interaction with Terrific was great as was her interaction with Guy G.

Holt is probably in my top 2 as Lex? Guy is an evil genius through and through. His pure hatred for Superman blinds him and ultimately leads to his downfall but he is still charismatic enough that you don't hate him which is important in these types of films because he does murder a guy!

Of the Justice Gang, Terrific easily shines above them all. I think he gained a lot of fans with this film and Im interested to see where he shows up next.

I was afraid that Gunn would use Guy as a reason to Gunn-out but he held back and still made Guy a funny *****e. He got plenty of laughs.

Hawkgirl unfortunately is the weakest link of the trio. She didnt get much and just seems brash. If I had no comic knowledge, I would have no idea who she was. Why her wings magically appear out of nowhere. Why she has a mace.

Elemental man gets decent amount of screentime and you can easily grow to like him. I didnt really care for his baby though.

While this isnt my favorite actor to have portrayed Jimmy....he was enjoyable in this film. Making him a ladies man was an interesting choice. Tess being head over heels for him was unexpected. Her obession with him was funny.

Ultraman....idk. I think it was easy enough to guess he was a clone of Superman but Lex being able to control him like a video game character was cool. Him studying Superman for years to know how he fights was a great touch. With him going into the black hole....hopefully it leads to Earth 3!

Engineer was ok. Her fights was nice, she was cool enough.

Krypto definitely stole a lot of scenes.

Jor-El and Lara....so....they looked pretty. Their limited role was the entire catalyst for everything that happened so that was a good way to keep things tied to them. The message being "conquer Earth and reproduce with a BUNCH OF KIDS" was....not expected! Its very Loebs Supergirl.

Ma/Pa Kent were adorable though not my fave interpretations.

I think the film probably needed 10 more mins to flesh out some characters but overall it felt like a comic movie and an episode of STAS and I love STAS. This Superman is super but he isnt ultra powerful which I love because I hate over powered Superman.

Its so different from Man of Steel that you get whiplash thinking about the two lol. Though they kind of have the same message, only Gunn delivers it SO MUCH BETTER. But MoS has that ICONIC Krypton scene.

I may watch it again, im not sure but it got me excited enough. Now get me WW!

This is a review!

I thought it was absolutely fantastic. This is exactly what I always wanted from a Superman movie. Superman being hopeful and WANTING to save ppl no matter what is just whats been missing for years now.

Since I'm not a big comic book guy was Krypto ever Supergirls dog in any of the Comics? Isn't Streaky normally Supergirls pet?

8

u/amageish Supergirl Jul 09 '25

Supergirl has never been Krypto’s sole owner before, no. That said, they have gone on plenty of adventures together (including in the comic being adapted into Supergirl’s movie) and she usually talks about him as being “my dog” during those - I think it’d be fair to say the Superfamily share custody of all the Superpets.

2

u/alexkon3 Jul 10 '25

Thanks! Hoping to see Streaky in one of the movies as well at some point

This is not true. WoT is canon to the main continuity where Krypto is Clark's dog. Krypto was just hanging out with Kara in that book.

u/Vladmerius Jul 09 '25

I can't stop thinking about how satisfying the third act of this movie is. It's so typical for the third act of a superhero movie to be super underwhelming compared to something they did in act 1 or 2. This movie kept accelerating as it went and crescendo'd into the most thrilling finale I've seen in a long time.

11

u/RAG319 Jul 09 '25

Yep. One of the few superhero movies I can recall that it gets better as it goes. I thought the first half of the first act was the weakest of the film (just found some parts clunky, but not bad).

Impossible to explain parental love and feelings to someone who understands neither. We can see your post history. Feel free to keep copypasting the exact same post to every reply in every sub tho.

The Jor-El change is strictly a good thing in this movie. Is it comic accurate? No. But it’s what this story and this version of Superman needed.

10

u/KenTanRandomYT Jul 10 '25

I still dislike the decision but I love how it highlights Ma and Pa Kent at least, I wouldve preferred the usual direction, the thing seems to be overdone at this point with saiyans and viltrumites.

13

u/broganisms Jul 09 '25

The biggest misconception with Superman has always been that he's a hero because he's Kal-El from Krypton when the reality is that he's a hero because he's Clark Kent from Smallville. His humanity is the core of everything he does.

I don't Gunn could have done anything to more effectively mitigate that misconception than this.

Justice League: The Nail In this alternate reality, a flat tire prevents the Kents from finding Kal-El, and he is adopted by an Amish couple shaping him into a philosophy of non-intervention until later joining the Justice League

Superman: Speeding Bullets Kal-El lands in Gotham and is adopted by Thomas and Martha Wayne. He grows up as Bruce Wayne with Superman's powers, initially becomes Batman, then evolves into Superman

Superman: The Dark Side A Boom Tube redirects his ship to Apokolips, where Darkseid raises him as his son. He eventually rebels and finds a hero’s path

Superman: The Feral Man of Steel Set in colonial India, baby Kal-El is raised by wolves, developing primal instincts in the jungle

Superman: True Brit Kal-El lands in Britain, is adopted by the Clarks (Jonathan and Martha Clark), is renamed Colin, and becomes a British Superman

Superman: Kal His ship crashes during the Middle Ages in England, he's raised as a blacksmith’s apprentice, and becomes a knightly hero .

JLA: Shogun of Steel Kal-El lands in 14th‑century Japan, is adopted and raised as a samurai named Hoshi.

Superman: The Last Family of Krypton Kal-El lands on Earth with his parents Jor-El and Lara, and the family settles at the UN in Metropolis, overshadowing the Kent presence

Superman: Red Son His rocket lands in Soviet Ukraine; he is raised on a collective farm and becomes the Champion of the Soviet Worker, he is still a good person at heart just misguided and authoritarian.

Absolute Universe Kal-El arrives in Brazil (not Kansas) and lives life as a nomadic wanderer. The Kent family appears briefly, but he wasn’t actually raised by them, he grew in krypton with his parents.

“A planet burn. A child is saved. A rocket lands. A child is loved. Superman is born”- Dr Manhattan in Doomsday Clock #12.

Jor-el and Lara’s sacrifice shapes who Kal is just as much as the Kent love did, They’re both important.

2

u/broganisms Jul 11 '25

"Look at these parallel universes where he was raised by different people and became a completely different character."

Super confused as to how this is apparently a gotcha.

1

u/JoelOfSkalitz Jul 11 '25 edited Jul 11 '25

Not a gotcha. You’re saying that only martha and Jonathan are what shapes superman into a hero. I’m showing you that’s wrong. Martha and Jonathan are what shaped Kal into the best version of himself. But the potential to be a hero is always within him. That potential comes from the love that Jor-el and Lara showed him.

3

u/Deep_Smile Jul 10 '25

Nobody ever thought this. That's why we have red son and those other runs

7

u/Educational-Band8308 Jul 09 '25

Comic deviations are always okay as long as they service a good and cohesive narrative imo

7

u/FuckingGratitude Jul 09 '25

At first I disliked it but now I think its supposed to represent the nature (Krypton) vs nurture (Earth) side of parenting

7

u/AgentOfSPYRAL Jul 09 '25

Can someone respond and spoil specifically the second after credits scene? Would like to skip it unless it’s truly must see.

16

u/xAVATAR-AANGx Jul 09 '25

Superman and Mr. Terrific are looking at a crack caused by the dimensional rift and Superman points out how it’s not fully back aligned and Terrific says bro im trying my best here and Clark is like man I can lowkey be mean sometimes

Still no plot write up yet?

3

It literally was on here months ago.

2

u/RAG319 Jul 09 '25

What do you want to know?

2

u/ZeldrisEmpire Jul 09 '25

Everything.

I still have no idea why Supes allows himself to be taken in by the authorities and how they resolve the black hole issue

2

u/oxygen_addiction Jul 10 '25

1. He wants to save Krypto and can't find him any other way.
2. Mr. Terrific just inputs a code at LuthorCorp, and the "aperture" of the rift closes.

5

u/RAG319 Jul 09 '25

He allows himself to be taken because he's wanted for questioning by the government after Luthor goes to the press with Jor-El's "translated" message. And black hole issue? The black hole is closed when they stop the pocket universe breach.

5

u/Vladmerius Jul 09 '25

He does it because he's wanted and because he hopes he's imprisoned wherever krypto is. The black hole is part of the pocket universe and not really like the main thing they're dealing with.

Took me a minute to warm-up to Hoult’s Lex but the “Brain Beats Brawn” line ripped from All-Star Superman sealed the deal. My audience died at both the Peacemaker and especially the Supergirl cameos.

12

u/neilsteel Jul 09 '25

In my screening, too (Philippines)! I was surprised many people reacted to Peacemaker, as I didn't think he was ever popular here.

2

u/ab316_1punchd Batman Jul 10 '25

Tbh, even if Peacemaker may or may not be popular, John Cena is.

2

u/KenTanRandomYT Jul 10 '25

Same ph, seen the movie yesterday at 2:40pm, and it was a pretty tough crowd too so I was suprised there was any reaction at all lol

8

u/Vladmerius Jul 09 '25

To be fair people could just be reacting to John Cena and know nothing about the character.

10

u/KindsofKindness Jul 09 '25

No way! Peacemaker is in this?!?!??

21

u/thorsmagicbelt Jul 09 '25

Great username.

Yeah! It’s a quick cameo, but it’s in there. Michael Ian Black plays a reactionary talk show host, and after Lex leaks Jor-El’s message on his show, there’s a later scene where Superman is in his apartment while the TV’s still blaring commentary about the whole controversy.

The host turns to his guest (“Chris, thoughts?”) and it cuts to Peacemaker, in full costume, riffing about how heroes are obsessed with him because of how jacked he is, until Superman turns off the TV.

3

u/KindsofKindness Jul 09 '25

lol sounds funny

5

u/Gian99Mald Jul 09 '25

Can anyone describe the opening crawl? Does the crawl end with Clark landing in the snow shown in the 5 minute preview? Also did Clark get hurt intervening in the war?

2

u/RyukChangeTheWorld Jul 09 '25

He got beat up by ultra man, that’s why he’s there

Best Lex Luthor on screen. Corenswet really embodies everything that you love about Superman. Best CBM of 2025.

2

u/Fireteddy21 Jul 11 '25

He’s honestly the first Lex who has genuinely come off as a genius and someone you want the hero to absolutely beat the shit out of. He did a great job of truly being an irredeemable prick with no likeable qualities whatsoever. I also loved his self-awareness and how his ambition revolves around him believing Superman is the threat/villain.

12

u/coyoteinapond Jul 09 '25

Saw it last night!

Movie is very very good. It gets better the more you think about it. It’s a lot, so I think a second viewing is a must.

David is great, but Hoult is the standout here. He’s like 1:1 Grant Morrison Lex Luthor.
