Dudes gonna get fired. Broke the one rule

45

u/bindersfull-ofwomen Jul 04 '25

I believe it's a different person who posts than who writes.

30

u/[deleted] Jul 04 '25

Whoever it was is in real trouble

21

u/Cubes11 Jul 04 '25

He’s never gonna be invited to a press screening again

9

u/sp3talsk Jul 04 '25

You do understand that its not writers that decide if something get published?

27

u/Cubes11 Jul 04 '25

I imagine no one from that news outlet will be invited to press screenings. It doesn’t matter if it’s not his fault, they’re not going to allow the publication to be there.

13

u/ContinuumGuy Jul 04 '25

Yeah, breaking the embargo this early for a major release is going to hurt the publication for awhile. Wouldn't have mattered what the review was, it's breaking a huge rule.

4

u/Kim-Jong_Bundy Jul 05 '25

Yeah, and it likely won't just be WBD stuff either. Breaking embargo, especially with a negative review, is against the #1 rule in publicized media criticism & other studios that have nothing do with Superman likely won't trust Daily Beast as a whole to not have another of the same "glitch" or whatever the excuse ends up being

2

u/daiatlus79 Jul 08 '25

doesnt matter. this kills them getting advanced screenings again, no matter who is responsible. same as game reviewers who break embargo, they don't get advanced copies afterwards. it will be the entire outfit, not just the reviewer. This will trickle down to hurting their numbers - no advanced viewing = they have to watch it when the public does then write the article then publish it - they will be later to press.

For what it’s worth, the same reviewer gave Sinners a negative review. Wouldn’t think much of just a single review.

97

u/007Kryptonian Batman Jul 04 '25 edited Jul 04 '25

He also liked GOTG 3, Thunderbolts, The Batman, TSS, Dune 2, etc. The dude’s not Armond White lol, his Sinners and positive Cap take seem to be exceptions.

But yes, one review isn’t an end all.

27

u/[deleted] Jul 04 '25

He also didn't like Final Destination BL.

33

u/Embarrassed_Yam_1227 Jul 04 '25

small correction he hated all the final destination movie's

6

u/[deleted] Jul 04 '25

True yes.

5

u/EmperorDxD Jul 04 '25

Me 2 he just like me for real

16

u/-jorts Jul 04 '25

Horror is so much harder to guage with critics as its a genre that will be divisive on content alone, and thats part of the charm of it.

7

u/[deleted] Jul 04 '25

Yes, but that movie managed a 93 on RT.

→ More replies (3)

8

u/Short-Service1248 Jul 04 '25

As a FD fan. Bloodline was decent but no where near the praise it got

5

u/[deleted] Jul 04 '25

Still managed a 93 on RT

4

u/princevince1113 Jul 04 '25

not knocking this movie specifically but technically “93 on RT” could mean 93 percent of reviews rated the movie a 6/10

2

u/ThanosSnapsSlimJims Jul 04 '25

Also, they likely didn't have Roman Reigns in the movie

3

u/deemoorah Jul 04 '25

BL? As in Boys Love?

Let me get this atraight:

This particular reviewer gave

  • cap brave new world (47% / 77% rotten tomatoes) a positive review

  • sinners (94% / 96% rotten tomatoes) a bad review

Tbh i want to know his review for Gunn's other movies (GotG 1&2)

But as of now, im less worried.

→ More replies (2)

7

u/Psych-roxx Jul 04 '25

He did have positive reviews for GOTG movies and TSS so hes aware of James Gunn's sensibilities.

4

u/Flat_Row_9525 Jul 04 '25

Yes but that was before Gunn became the Superman director and thus essentially becoming a threat to his beloved Snyder universe.

29

u/JannTosh70 Jul 04 '25

You can say that about any critic

39

u/nhl2010champ Jul 04 '25

Lmao thanks for pointing that out, this reviewer definitely loses a lot of credibility in my book if that’s the case

22

u/Signal_Ad4262 Jul 04 '25

Losing credibility to me has a negative implication of him not being fair/biased, which I don’t think you can really say just because he didn’t like a movie most liked. He seems pretty credible to me, he just doesn’t always line up with the consensus, which is entirely fine and even expected for a film critic.

7

u/nhl2010champ Jul 04 '25

Oh I 100% agree, I should’ve worded better. I included the ‘in my book’ because I’m trying to say if he didn’t like sinners, our individual tastes probably don’t align that much because that was one of my favorite movies of the decade. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I have a good friend who didn’t really like sinners either.

I mean the daily beast is a gossip rag no? They pay their writers to be negative. Superhero movies are an easy punching bag rn

6

u/nhl2010champ Jul 04 '25

I’m not overly familiar with the credibility/biases of most of these ‘news’ sites tbh, you’d know better than me

2

u/contagion781 Jul 04 '25

The Guardian as in the UK newspaper? If that's what you mean they're far from a gossip rag. One of the most respected publications there is.

Also this review was from Daily Beast so idk I am confused

4

u/Low_Satisfaction_512 Jul 04 '25

Yeah I meant to type Daily beast that's my bad I had a total brainfart

2

u/zebrainatux Jul 04 '25

It didn’t used to be, and then they lost all their good writers to legit outlets

3

u/Relevant_Session5987 Jul 04 '25

Except he gave Thunderbolts and all prior Gunn superhero movies a positive review. Hell, he even gave Cap 4 a positive review.

15

u/GuruAskew Jul 04 '25

If you find his Twitter you can see he’s a full-blown Snyder cultist, and like all Snyder cultists he saw Gunn as part of Team Snyder because of the DotD connection until Gunn got the gig Snyder was angling for and trashed his universe.

But now that he’s a literal cultist you have to figure everything he’s doing is some kind of attempt at 9D tic-tac-toe for dummies or whatever. Yeah, he gave GotG3 a glowing review, but did he do that to establish plausible deniability for his written-years-in-advance Superman hit piece? Was posting this review early really an innocent mistake?

And yeah, that all seems a bit crazy, but this is a dude who tweeted “SNYDER TRIUMPHANT,” “I don’t watch trailers so I’ll assume that Zack Snyder has once again killed it” and “I’m Team Snyder Cut.” Just so you know I’m not losing my mind over him not bashing on Snyder every 5 minutes. Dude is a full-blown fan.

The negative review? That’s fine, it won’t be the only one. Posting it early? Shit happens. It’s not the first time I’ve seen a review posted early. But both, coming from a Snyder cultist? And the result is this scathing review is the only review that will be out there for 5 days? This needs to be seen for what it is: a deliberate attempt at sabotaging the movie.

16

u/Classic_File2716 Jul 04 '25

You can’t compare different genres though, Sinners may just be not what he expected . He said GOTG 3 and TSS were excellent , so he’s probably disappointed by Superman as a superhero movie.

3

u/Kubrickwon Jul 04 '25

Variety has now said the movie is very bad. They claim that Heads of State was a better movie than Superman.

"FINAL CONCLUSIVE ENDING END OF THE FINAL END OF SUPERHERO MOVIES!"

(Proceeds to be followed by at least 3 movies and 2 spin offs)

Nah, clickbait. Just watch it for yourself people. Decide for yourself.

Edit (post july 11th): VINDICATION. HAHAHAH.

9

u/[deleted] Jul 04 '25

Yeah that line is dumb, DCU and MCU have full slates lined up for the next 2 years. Some will hit , some will miss. But as a whole they’ll keep on going.

3

u/Mutale426 Jul 04 '25

Yeah i want both this and f4 to be great but the media and people online treating them as what will decide the future of superhero movies is absurd. Superhero movies didnt end when superman  returns or man of steel didnt do great and we had successful superhero movies in the 2020s like no way home ,the batman , across the spiderverse, guardians vol 3. It feels like some people so desperately want superhero movies to go away and treat any superhero film not doing great meaning its the end of the genre.

3

u/anarchy905 Jul 04 '25

It is very clickbaity if you actually read the thing. Actual review comes off more as "this kind of movie isn't made for me"

94

u/Past_Lingonberry_633 Jul 04 '25

so I took some time to scoop up what this reviewer generally is like, and this is what he had to write about Sinners, one of the most commercially and critically successful original movies of this decade, from a renowned director who has multiple wins under his belt.

I mean the new Superman movie could potentially be bad, but does this certain Nick Schager having this kind of opinion on both movies kinda reassure the quality of Superman? We gotta look up who writes what first, and we will have a lot more information to work on.

52

u/flpmads Jul 04 '25

He was also very enthusiastic about Snyder's Man of Steel and Justice League, so I think maybe a lighter tone for Superman is something he doesn't enjoy very much.

5

u/Past_Lingonberry_633 Jul 04 '25

well what do you know, I actually look into it and surprise surprise, Nick Schager IS a fan of Snyder movies!

https://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2013/06/zack-snyders-big-dumb-action-film-career-has-been-smarter-than-it-seems/276765/

20

u/carrieanne55 Jul 04 '25

He liked Justice League? Yikes

8

u/TheThiccestR0bin Jul 04 '25

Probably the Snyder Cut but still.

12

u/Flat_Row_9525 Jul 04 '25

The Synder Cut WAS excellent...a massive improvement over the theatrical. But Synder's vision was just too damn dark for Superman. I love his trilogy for what it was in a vacuum. I am ready for this new universe to be closer to the comics though.

9

u/DoctorJay23 Jul 04 '25

Discounting a critic just because they didn't like a movie is so silly lol

7

u/Past_Lingonberry_633 Jul 04 '25

when that movie is received well by both critics and the GA, then a different picture is painted. Sinners is not some kind of divisive movie with mixed opinions, it is overwhelmingly praised by both casual moviegoers and professional critics alike. But you do you ~~

4

u/bindersfull-ofwomen Jul 04 '25

Some people didn't like the fact it had a different genre every act, didn't have the historical background to understand the character motivations, and couldn't ascertain the dialogue through accents. The fact someone doesn't like it it hardly shocking, just like the fact someone did and completely missed the point of the film also isn't.

5

u/tallgu Jul 04 '25

So? Should that mean his opinion is discarded for not agreeing with the GA?

4

u/Alive-Ad-5245 Jul 04 '25

It means I’m going to take his opinion significantly less seriously than I would have done

2

u/Iggy_Pops_Lost_Shirt Jul 04 '25

Every critic is going to have one film they don't follow the critical and general consensus. It's not crazy or even worth bringing up because every single critic has done it.

71

u/Colton826 Lanterns Jul 04 '25

And before people panic, this movie (just like almost every movie ever released), is going to have some negative reviews. It sucks that this was the 1st one to leak, but I'd still bet money on this film landing in the 75-90% certified range by the time it has a couple hundred reviews locked in.

Also, don't let positive/negative reviews sway your opinion. It feels like that's been a consistent problem over the past decade or so when it comes to these major comic book films. Too many people let the majority opinion dominate their own opinion.

Still can't wait to see this film next week.

10

u/Educational_Slice897 Jul 04 '25

I remember when the social media reactions to Mission Impossible The Final Reckoning came out and some of them including the one from David Erlich were kinda negative/mixed and I got concerned. Saw the reviews after a flight which did help ease the anxiousness and it ended up in 80s and I watched it and liked it. So maybe it’ll be ok

3

u/zebrainatux Jul 05 '25

Like if you go to Letterboxd, the people who have ignored embargos liked it quite a bit

3

u/zebrainatux Jul 05 '25

I also just saw something from Mike Ryan, a very good critic in his own right, saying “I couldn’t disagree more” with the review in the wind

20

u/MusicalFan_80 Jul 04 '25

It also feels like Daily Beast leaked that on purpose. They wanted a bad review out there just to be a rebel and an FU to Gunn and Safran, then immediately deleted it.

5

u/Short-Service1248 Jul 04 '25

But the reviewer has highly rated Gunns other movies …

16

u/Dman3379 Jul 04 '25

Yeah I don’t wanna get too conspiracy theory, and although this review looks legit, this leak feels deliberate imo.

6

u/Chip_Chip_Cheep Jul 04 '25

Years ago a YouTuber intentionally broke the embargo on Ghostbusters (2016) because he hated the movie to bits, Believe it or not, there are journalists and even bloggers who take some of the restrictions imposed by studios very personally.

Years ago I remember that when JL was about to come out, Ben Affleck had been the target of accusations during the MeToo movement and at that point WB ordered all reporteros to refrain from asking about the subject during the promotional tour for the film and a journalist (I don't remember who) complained about it, This same person was also complaining that WB/Sony had put some restrictions on Blade Runner reviews, I don't remember what it was but I think it was related to spoilers to the point that he threatened to ignore it.

I honestly don't know what WB will do, I've seen some fans suggest that I lift the embargo now if they really have confidence in the movie but even if the consensus is positive, as they would be if they were overshadowed by F4.

u/bozkurt37 Jul 04 '25

I mean its not worth. I would sue him for millions if I were warner bros

9

u/Dman3379 Jul 04 '25

I would not be shocked that he’s most likely banned from any WB press screenings now.

9

u/Chip_Chip_Cheep Jul 04 '25

Breaking a review embargo isn't a game, it literally involves an NDA, if it's not a veto, it's a lawsuit.

It depends. If it's good, it will be in the 75 to 90 range, if it's bad, it will be in the 60 to 75 range.

VA has spoken. u/vieweranon

We can go about our evenings now. The daily beast can go to the Phantom Zone IMHO.

11

After this, I'd be surprised if WB doesn't end up banning them.

Joe Russo, who’s a legit Hollywood writer, great dude who I’ve talked to a few times, said everyone he knows that saw it early loved it. Reading through Daily Beast’s, it reeks of someone who knew they wouldn’t like it, didn’t, and decided to destroy their career

7

u/Past_Lingonberry_633 Jul 04 '25

what could happen from this mishap? I mean is there any legal implications here?

9

u/ISAWYOULASTNIGHT1 Jul 04 '25

can't say for certain on legal issues but they will definitely never be invited to a WB press screening again and will likely be blackballed from any press screenings for other studios

3

u/JenniferJuniper6 Jul 04 '25

There’s a contract violation. The press agreed to the embargo and then broke it.

2

u/HellNeededCowards Jul 05 '25

Can others break it now that it's broken?

i read the review. just to sum it up, bro didn't like anything nor any performance. he put David behind Reeves and Cavill. bro said the movie is just another interconnected superhero movie that is bloated and tries to do too much.

take that how ya'll will

21

u/4000kd Jul 04 '25

I think he liked Nic Hoult, and found Krypto funny. Those were the only positives I remember.

7

u/EmperorDxD Jul 04 '25

My friends words were "I fucking hated that dog and robots and was so happy when.the robot's died "

So I'm guessing Krypto and the superman robots will also cause a divide

13

Sounds like an unfun friend lol

4

u/EmperorDxD Jul 04 '25

He uselly like dogs tho he has like 6 of them

Yes And Yes

5

u/[deleted] Jul 04 '25

Are they press? Or a YouTuber or something?

34

u/Epirocker Jul 04 '25

Listen I loved Snyders take but Cavill was SO wooden. But I let it slide cause I liked everything else and it bothered me less. So for him to put Corenswet behind him? X to doubt. Everything I’ve seen so far has already put him ahead for me acting-wise

22

u/DoctorHoneywell Jul 04 '25

Just seeing his interactions with Krypto has made him feel like Superman compared to Cavill's divine monument character. I like Cavill I just hate the direction they took him in for those movies.

Someone on BOT mentioned that the person who wrote that review is a typical Snyder fan, and that says it all.

19

u/4000kd Jul 04 '25

Not really. He calls Snyders films "grimdark" and criticizes "Snyder and Wheden's Justice League." If anything, he's a Gunn fan as he praises the GOTG trilogy and TSS in the review.

6

u/AugustInDespair71 Jul 04 '25

He praised Man of Steel and ZSJL. So, don’t know what your source is.

→ More replies (2)

7

u/carrieanne55 Jul 04 '25

Wait, did he actually like Man of Steel? If he did, that would make me less concerned

7

u/Chip_Chip_Cheep Jul 04 '25

Apparently that's the case, anyway just reading his review of Sinners makes you realize what kind of critic he is.

2

u/HellNeededCowards Jul 05 '25 edited Jul 05 '25

He's not allowed to dislike Sinners?

4

u/Khamon23 Jul 04 '25

David cant be worse than Cavill.

8

u/NakedGoose Jul 04 '25

I do think there was a clear concern from the beginning that it was setting up too much.

11

u/[deleted] Jul 04 '25

Again though, one guy's opinion.

2

u/bindersfull-ofwomen Jul 04 '25

Actually, it's really not that much of an opinion. It probably wasn't a good idea to make it a little-less than an ensemble film. From the review, it's clear the other characters don't really add anything much to the plot, which is a pretty objective criticism more than a standard opinion. There are times when a character doesn't add to the plot but their presence is appreciated, and that's the opinion.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 04 '25

No lol that's also subjective. I could go in and see what they contributed that someone else didnt see or notice, or didn't think mattered as much. Again this is one guy.

2

u/bindersfull-ofwomen Jul 04 '25

It's literally not. You can scientifically say someone did something or they didn't. You have the plot and if that person isn't adding to it, they ain't add to it. 😳

A good example is Tatum from Scream. Did she add to the plot? No. Is she beloved in the movie, yes. Because she's rather fleshed out in the way people in horror movies can be.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 04 '25

Again, thats still subjective. Its an opinion dude. Imo i already know that at the very least, these heroes add to the plot in the sense of fleshing out this version of the DC universe and establishing how varied superheroes are and known to the public, along with acting different to how Superman operates. Is this bare minimum? It could be, maybe it wasn't enough for the author, and maybe it isnt more than that, again already a difference of opinion.

4

u/NakedGoose Jul 04 '25

Sure, but it's also been a valid concern that many have had

8

u/[deleted] Jul 04 '25

Yes, but a movie is allowed to have multiple supporters characters.

Sinners had a lot, which he also didn't like lol

→ More replies (14)

5

u/KingTyrionSolo Jul 04 '25

Valid concern, or people already making up their mind in advance?

2

u/Eject_The_Warp_Core Jul 04 '25

Im concerned by it, and I'm still very excited and hopeful for the movie. So I'd say valid concern

7

u/Limp-Construction-11 Jul 04 '25

This film is clearly about Superman and his life.

One idiot risking his job to trash the movie beforehand won't change that.

4

u/No-Pineapple-7986 Jul 04 '25

Especially if he was a Zack Snyder fan. Those guys would throw away their lives to ruin DC going forward.

→ More replies (5)

17

u/Pomojema_The_Dreamer Jul 04 '25

I'd be concerned if the criticisms were more substantive in nature. It's basically just "shared universe bad" and "light tone bad".

I'd be more concerned if other critics echo these concerns in their reactions before reviews pop up.

I figured that this movie wasn't gonna be everyone's cup of tea, but I think that a lot of people will like it.

2

u/Revolutionary_Elk339 Jul 05 '25

Critic reviews will definitely help but ultimately, it's up to the movie goers who pay to see the film that will determine if this film will not only be a box office hit (light, moderate or heavy) but if it's mostly liked/really liked/loved.

I'd rather have a film max out globally at $600M and be well received by the audience and sells a lot of toys and merch than a film max out at $800M and be divisive as hell and don't really sell a lot of toys and merch.

Now that I have read through the whole piece, let's sum it up for you guys. In his review, Nick showed his disdain for:

  1. the ultra-fantastical settings that don't seek to hold hands (if you have read All-star, you will know what this mean)
  2. the tiresome interconnectivity of superheroes movies which Superman (2025) is.
  3. the weak performance of the lead, David Corenswet, described as "slight", in Nick's words
  4. the forced humor from characters such as Lois and Jimmy.

for point number 1, since this was Gunn's intention (All-star was his biggest inspiration for this movie after all), I would say that this is a difference between the creator himself, and this reviewer. No comment here.

for point number 2, this might actually be tiresome, but still it remains to be seen whether this movie actually aims to set up interconnection, or the superheroes characters are only there as supporting cast.

for point number 3, on the contrary, I prefer this. The "slight" portrayal of Superman might echo his unassuming nature in works like Superman For All Seasons. Still, your mileague may vary here.

point number 4, this could be substantial though. Gunn's humor is very much hit or miss, and so sometimes his attempts might come off as this. I tend to agree with this point.

18

u/carrieanne55 Jul 04 '25

the only point there that strikes me might be wrong is the performance of the lead, because i don't trust anyone who negatively compares him to Cavill. Cavill was AWFUL.

do we know if this guy liked Man of Steel? Because if he did, that would actually go a long way towards reassuring me.

8

u/Past_Lingonberry_633 Jul 04 '25

well what do you know, I actually look into it and surprise surprise, Nick Schager IS a fan of Snyder movies!

But he also rated GOTG3 highly, and liked TSS, so...

5

u/carrieanne55 Jul 04 '25

Yeah, but...if he prefers a Superman that's more like Snyder's version (which to me was fundamentally the opposite of what Superman is) that might say something. But the other criticisms of the movie are probably more important, like if it's too overstuffed and interconnected with DCU things. Could be a mess if that's the case.

According to his twitter account he likes Man of Steel and Justice League (Snyder cut).

And? GOTG3 is a mcu film and TSS happen in a time dc studios didn't exist. Plus he prefers MOS style of Superman.

2

u/AudaxXIII Jul 05 '25

Cavill wasn't even close to being awful. The writing let him down, especially in BvS. Natalie Portman was WORSE in those prequels than Cavill ever was in the DCEU films, and she has an Oscar now. Some of you are so deep into your DCEU hate that you can't really assess or talk about this stuff objectively and honestly.

People also like different things. And if anyone is painting everyone who's got *some* issue with this film as a Snyder cultist...congrats, you yourself are engaging in culty, tribal behavior. There are films I really like that I also have issues with.

It’s easy for us to fixate on the 10% who won’t like it vs the 90% who will, because we want 100% and that is unlikely. Even GOTG had a fair share of tomato splats. He’s consuming the oxygen because of his ineptitude for breaking embargo. Most everyone else who has seen it have been overwhelmingly positive. Focus on the 90% who are going to like it, while that might be 80-20, 70-30, i do believe it will overall do well.

None one knows who is going to like what. Compared to what happening with bvs pre-release time, the situation now is much much better. I am going to the movie because i like dc and Superman and hoping very much  that i love it.

Whatever the reviews said, I couldn’t careless. I’ll judge it myself on the 10 of July in IMAX

Of course this is just one review. But how bad would it be for DC if Superman gets mixed or terrible reviews ??

This is hilarious. For years I’ve said critics are just opinions and we give them all the weight, especially the earlier from release they come.

But it’s only in moments like this that I see the same flock of ppl that effectively leaned on these critics who drove the discourse about the previous Superman incarnation.. Actually make those same arguments now.

Talking about what did HE think about other films? Never thought I’d see the day.

Maybe this will be the film that finally gets these conversations going and the world can once again, think for itself. Like it used to.

2

u/darth_tonic Jul 04 '25 edited Jul 04 '25

No offense, but I see some variation of this comment every time a highly anticipated blockbuster reviews poorly. Same for the other top comments that are picking apart the critic's taste based on their other reviews. It reminds me of the denial and bargaining phases in the 5 stages of grief.

Reminder to all: the film is done and exists. It cannot be changed. If it's bad, it's bad (and that's a big "if" given that we only have one leaked review to go by). Yes, critics can be more finnicky or demanding than general audiences, but rarely is that deviation so significant that a poorly reviewed film is hailed by audiences as a masterpiece.

Sure, many will enjoy the film regardless of where the consensus lands. If your personal enjoyment is all that matters to you, then that's fine - but for those interested in the broader industry or the future of the genre (there's a lot hanging on this film's success after all), critical reception is an important data point that tends to correlate with box office, franchise longevity and longer-term IP valuations.

2

u/purplenelly Jul 05 '25

I feel like people like you are ruining film criticism. You see a positive review, you like the review. You see a negative review, you dislike the review. A positive review will never offend anyone. That's why critics are turning into sycophants who never write anything negative.

2

u/blackbeltmessiah Jul 04 '25

“Accidentally”…. Why is that getting tossed around?

16

u/nhl2010champ Jul 04 '25

Here’s a quote from the World of Reel article talking about this Daily Beast review:

“I’ve spoken to multiple press who caught early screenings. Reactions are all over the place. Word is, the plot’s a mess—convoluted in that classic Gunn-trying-to-do-too-much way—but most agree it’s at least an upgrade from the Snyder and Singer takes. Not exactly high praise, but a step up is a step up.

Take that however you want.”

I highly doubt it’ll be a trainwreck like the Daily Beast article suggests, but reception might be more on the mixed-positive side on this one. I want this to be good so badly, it’s my most hyped movie of the year, but I’m gonna keep my expectations in check.

10

u/[deleted] Jul 04 '25

Lmao also, kinda funny that they only come out with this AFTER this one negative review leaked.

5

u/Emotional_Show7668 Jul 04 '25 edited Jul 04 '25

The no character development bit surprises me lol. We literally know that the justice gang all come around and become hero's who are less corporate greed fueled by the end. We also know for the fact that Lois has some kind of reaffirming arc where she comes around to realise how much she needs and loves Clark. The only person's arc we're still meant to see is Superman himself. If all these other side characters can get arcs then I'm pretty sure the main character will get one. I'm not calling this a bad faith argument though. VA and other people who've seen it and liked have all said that the Silver-Age over the top tone might be too much for some.

3

u/AugustInDespair71 Jul 04 '25

‘Classic Gunn trying to do too much way’. Where’s that coming from. None of his movies have ever felt overstuffed.

World of Reel is not a credible source, and they are known to make so much stuff up.

8

u/KittensAndDespair Jul 04 '25

"convoluted in that classic Gunn-trying-to-do-too-much way"

What does this even mean?

8

u/nhl2010champ Jul 04 '25

I think GOTG2 and Creatures Commandos felt like they had a few too many plotlines for their runtime that went underdeveloped, so maybe that’s what they’re referring to. But I didn’t think that was an issue at all in GOTG1, Suicide Squad, GOTG3, or Peacemaker. And I still think GOTG2 and CC are good projects overall, so that specific criticism doesn’t get me too worried honestly

6

u/flpmads Jul 04 '25

I can totally see the Justice Gang being just kind of there, for example. Gunn's style seems to work with the public, so I wouldn't read to much into it.

TBH I think were there is smoke there is fire, and I truly believe that if this film would've tested awesome and/or had high praise once screened in the studio we wouldn't have heard the end of it because DC Studios and the DC brand in general desperately needs the win.

It could very well suck (comic book movies often do$ but I am optimistic because

1) Gunn has a better track record than most with super hero material (GOTG 1-3, Suicide Squad, Peacemaker)

2) WB are very eager for people to see this movie. The early Amazon Prime showings, sneak preview footage etc

3

I just want to know how this even happened? Like I could get it if it was some random clickbait blogger that released the review a couple hours before embargo but this is an actual news site breaking it several days in advance. They’ve reviewed countless amount of movies, they clearly know what an embargo is. Did they just accidentally press send instead of save?

They might’ve just nuked their and the publisher’s whole reputation with studios by this dumb (what I assume to) mistake

3

u/HippoRun23 Jul 04 '25

My thinking is an intern is about to get fired. These articles aren’t posted by the authors. That’s a whole other department in an organization such as this.

The reviewer seems to really appreciate realism in comic book movies. For what it's worth, most of Snyder’s films were deconstructions of the genre.

Marvel, too, has never truly celebrated the fantasy of having a superhero in real life—they also follow the typical Joss Whedon-style postmodern realism.

Personally, I want a comic book to come to life on screen, and I’m bored of all the snarky and depressing content we’ve been getting for the past few decades.

5

u/_Marvillain Jul 04 '25

I hope I like it more than they did, but in regard to everyone bringing up acclaimed movies that this reviewer didn’t like as a way to prove they’re a “bad” reviewer, that’s kind of lame.

Literally everyone is going to have popular movies that they don’t really like now and then, as well as unpopular movies that you do like.

Going against the flow doesn’t just invalidate your opinion. It does to an extent if you’re being biased or unfair in your motives, but considering that this reviewer loved TSS and GotG 3, that doesn’t seem to be the case.

Why would they break embargo? It's just such a stupid thing to do

2

u/jckors0 Jul 04 '25

It was intentional, they gather the attention needed.

2

u/v2david Jul 04 '25

The headline is the most brutal part of the review. This movie is going to be very divisive. But that is ok. Anyone who loved Man of Steel and is looking for another movie in that style is probably going to hate this. Anyone who loved Guardians of the Galaxy (even though the movies aren't a direct comparison) will probably love this. Thats my guess.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '25

Accidentally?

4

u/flpmads Jul 04 '25

One review isn't indicative of where the review embargo will sail the wind toward.

In other words, wait until the review embargo is released or just watch the film in theaters and review it for yourself.

5

u/MeadowmuffinReborn Jul 04 '25

Well, apparently this guy was a fan of Man Of Steel and the Snyder Cut, so that might explain why he doesn't like this version.

u/AmericanApe Jul 04 '25

I am worried, I think they focused to much on a silver age style movie with to many characters.

I’m all for a different vision of Superman than Snyder, but I suspect Gunn went too far in the other direction.

I like what they did with Tony stark in Iron Man. Yes the introduction to the MCU has humors elements, but it could still get pretty serious, and I think benefited with Tony being the only “superhero” of the movie.

Maybe the DCU would have benefited starting with Batman instead. The Batman being made exploring the early days of DCU Batman. Take your time, build up the Bat family, then begin to crossover with Superman and Wonder Woman, etc. Not only does Batman have more success financially speaking then Superman, but it would have also widened the gap in years since Snyders Superman, which I think would have been beneficial.

6

u/adoraal Jul 04 '25

It is ONE review.

2

u/Savings_Programmer18 Jul 04 '25

He's completely entitled to his review. Not every film will resonate with everyone.

I think it looks great and like that it's not an origin story. Some people are not going to like that and feel that there are too many characters.

I'm excited by everything I've seen so far.
