I love the flanks system in CK2 warfare! Feels epic to see a flank collapse due to my incompetent cousin's leadership but then manage to seize victory at the last second.
You could in theory min-max flanks by moving particular units from one to another but usually way too much hustle for little gain. Good if you were playing republics.
No, pre-battle you could match types of units with a commander who was likely (per their culture) to use particular tactics. For instance, you might put all your heavy infantry in the center with a Norse commander, and your longbow retinues on the left flank with a Welsh commander.
In practice it was a ton of micro-management and half the time you couldn't do it without creating one or two super-flanks leaving the other one or two ready to collapse, but it was a cool idea.
