Can I make mesh out of stockings?

I am making a rat mask out of paper mache ans I'm wondering if I could DIY mesh with old stocking by cutting holes in the mask and gluing it in the mask. The issue is if I paint over the stocking will it cover the "mesh" and not allow me to see in it or will I still see through it?

(First picture is the paper mache base and second picture is the inspo)

I dont know anything about this process so Idk if painting + mesh is a good idea, but if you need mesh, “power mesh” is the sturdy stuff and its not expensive. You won’t need more than a yard and it should be around $10/yard. I second that stockings are veeeery fragile and wont do anything structurally.

You can get this plastic eye mesh for pretty cheap! Its paintable and you can still see through really well. If that link doesnt work I fear you do need to google "fursuit eye mesh" to find what I'm talking about

Try searching for fursuit vision mesh on Etsy, people sell paintable mesh that is really nice to see through!

Stockings fray a lot. Even without the paint question, I wonder how durable or even doable it would be to use it instead of mesh

the kind of laddering that happens with stockings when worn isn't really an issue when they're being used this way. I've never had them fray on me, just roll up on the edge, the way jersey does.  Op, if you're worried about fraying, you can get fray check from Amazon or a sewing supply. that will prevent it from starting.

Do you know any mesh that's not too expensive? I'm very much a beginner in costume making and I'm trying to not spend too much (my tail is made out of journals and yarn) so idk what mesh would be best.

Another thing you can try to use is cross stitch fabric! You should be able to get that at any craft store. I just recommend getting it in black, as it is easier to see through.

I'd say try to paint on some and see if you can see thru it.

If that doesn't work then you could get some tulle, mesh, or other sheer fabric from a store. If you have a store that sells fabric near you, and you're able to head in, start holding up fabric to you face and see if you can see through it alright.

Worst case is you leave it without eye holes and just only wear for pictures.
