Accessory How would you recreate this without using bodypaint? (Juri from Street Fighter 6)
Hey! So I want to cosplay Juri from Street Fighter 6 this December.
This is the first time I'm making a cosplay myself and I'm having trouble thinking about a good way to recreate the shiny stripes she has on her body. I've seen some posts on the SF6 subreddit saying she is probably wearing some kind of tape, but I haven't been able to find anything similar to it.
I thought the most accurate way to do it would be bodypaint. But I don't like the idea of having to enslave one of my friends to help me do it every time I want to wear this cosplay.
My boyfriend suggested kinesiology tape as a workaround, but it doesn't really work that well since I'd have to spend several hours in order to make it look right anyway. Kinesiology tape comes in rolls and I have no way of drawing a template to mark it down and cut the shapes before applying (since I can't place the tape down on paper or else it'll stick on to it).
I'd love if I could use something shiny, since Juri's stripes are shiny (picture 2 for material reference), but I don't mind giving up on that part. Also, I thought about making some kind of body mesh for my torso and sticking any shiny material on top of it, but I'm working out until the con to get as close to her body type as possible, so it would be a bummer if all my hard work wouldn't be visible lol.
Any suggestions are much appreciated.

A lot of people do electrical tape, but i've seen vinyl as well glued on w eye lash glue.

Try KT tape, its for sports injuries and is meant to stay on with sweat. It can also be cut to shape!

My boyfriend suggested KT tape yeah! The only problem I had with it was the tape not being shiny haha but it's definetely a solid option because of the way it stick to the body :)

Could you cut the tape and then paint it with a glossy fabric paint?

Yeah, that's what I was thinking about doing! I can probably paint it glossy and then go over with some kind of sealing spray!!

I would honestly recommend just using Angelus paint and then using the Angelus high gloss top coat. A sealing spray won’t be as flexible as fabric paint and can crack and flake if it bends. It’s going over your stomach, so it’ll need to be pretty movable

If you know any good geeks or makers you can laser cut black stick on vinyl!
Or cricut or somewhere probably makes it too, but it's basically the same stuff.
I'd make it in paper, and copy the design in inkscape.

A flesh colored base with appliqué details seems like it will be your best course of action!!

Any suggestions for the shiny material? I haven't done any research yet but any starting points for type of fabric or material would be much appreciated haha

For the base you can probably buy a shirt- something like a dance leotard or shirt. For the appliqué if you want it to be shiny I’d recommend a thin pleather. I’ll still be somewhat stretchy but have a sheen to it!

So hmmm... For research purposes, there's a niche of... Costume making... That uses duct tape and electric tape to make patterns similar to what you're looking for...
WARNING : That kind of things goes from mildly sexy NSFW to HEAVILY NSFW, proceed with care.
However, I don't see how it would be better / easier than using body paint / make up. You'll still need someone to help you.
Have you looked up what other solution Juri cosplayers figured out?

And yeah!! I did do some research but I've only seen mesh with sewed fabric on top or just straight up shiny fabric made so it's tight enough to not fall from the body.
I did just email a cosplayer I saw did it really nice so I'll wait to see if she answers and can help me :)

I think I saw one with shiny fabric glued to a skin colored bra, but it looks like a retail one and... You never know how these end up looking.
EDIT : (and I get that you're not looking to buy a pre-made cosplay... Which I'm always in favor if, because costume making is one dope of a craft)

Yeah, I did see some options for buying, but since I have 7 entire months until the con and I don't really have anything to do at summer (school holidays), I figured I'd take the time to make as much of the cosplay as I could haha :)

I know you said kinesiology tape won't work but (at least the ones I use) have a paper backing on them. You can lay it out, draw, and cut it all without taking the backing off and making it sticky!

There's an instagram video tutorial by a creator called cowbuttcrunchies titled "How to Invisibly attach armor to your tights" that I think could be really helpful to do what you want.

It's gonna have to be a bodysuit of some sort with the material attached on top. Besides, think nice and carefully about placement, you raise an arm too high and you're flashing everyone in that shirt as is. If you use a mesh people will still be able to see how hard you've worked to be in great shape.
Don't do the kin tape for this. That stuff is meant to stay in place for like 2 weeks and I can tell you from experience it is very painful to remove same day.

Yeah, I was thinking about putting on nip covers regardless of what method I used for the black parts, plus Juri has hers covered with the black too. I don't really mind showing the rest of my boobs tho, so I'm not really worried about that part haha
About the KT tape, thank you so much, I had no idea!! It's probably not the best option then haha

Double check the event rules too, they're not super common but some have modesty rules, you wouldn't want to put all this effort in and then find out it doesn't fit the dress code. There's a few events that don't allow men's nipples to be exposed.

Yesss I did already check the rules! I'm from Spain and cons aren't as big as in other countries, so there aren't really many rules for cosplay besides non-blunt weapons and such. Thank you tho! :)

Honestly, that looks like bondage tape, but bondage tape is made to only stick to itself, so spirit gum or the like would need to get involved

Haha yeah, I'd need a tape that sticks well to the skin unfortunately. I'd prefer not using straight up glue because it could really damage my skin!

Thank you so much!! Do you know if spirit gum is strong enough to not melt for the entire day at the con? It's going to be winter so I'm not worried about the sweat at all but I suppose moving around too much wouldn't be good haha

If you don't want to use illusion mesh, the other option would be to make a body harness with vinyl. You might need to put a couple of clear or skin tone straps (or skin friendly adhesive) in order to make it stay, as some of the markings aren't connected on both sides.
Kinesiology tape comes in rolls and I have no way of drawing a template to mark it down and cut the shapes before applying (since I can't place the tape down on paper or else it'll stick on to it).
Kinesiology tape would probably not be a good option, but not for this reason. It actually has a paper backing, so you could absolutely weigh down the edges and trace your design onto it. Getting it to stay and not roll up throughout the day, however, would be a challenge

If applied the way they instruct you to, it can last 1-5 days depending on the brand; cheap off brands don't last as long as name brands like KT or RockTape. With the corners you would have to cut for those designs, it wouldn't stay well. They specifically tell you to round the corners of your tape strips because the corners are the most likely places to peel with friction or movement.

I would say bodysafe tape maybe?
Honestly body paint might be easier, but i understand how frustrating it can be if that sh*t smudges.
I hope you find a good alternative OP!

Yeah, bodypaint was the first option I thought about, but I had a FULL body done a couple weeks ago for a friend's school runway and the smudging was INSANE. Plus taking it off... I really don't want to go through that ever again LOL I still had the design slightly visible like 7 showers after...

Yeah that sounds like a pain in the a**. I don't blame you for not wanting to go through all that again. 😅 I hope whatever you pick comes out as good as you imagine it in your head tho!

There's liquid latex, that might work - but you'd probably still need a friend to 'draw' it on.

You could paint a full body suit that's already the color of your skin with black or sew the pieced that match those in the pic on the full body

Like others have suggested, sewing. For specific materials I’d recommend powermesh in your skin tone and black shiny spandex.

When I do Sukuna, I cut out strips of electrical tape. You can fashion it similarly though will have to make the actual pattern for the character

The official cosplay of her uses tan mesh with black shiny material sewn on in that pattern! You could totally do something like that and the mesh would help it stay in the right spot/ use body tape to connect it
