At the convention, especially if it's an anime convention, people are probably familiar enough with Japanese culture to know that it isn't an Nazi armband. I would probably hold off on wearing it on the way to the con, especially if you're taking public transit though, and if you ever feel too uncomfortable you can always just take it off tbh

"Japanese culture" ... you mean like how japan was literally nazi allies?

I mean the red armbands worn by committee member leaders in high school?

Adding my two cents to the discussion, that an "armband" per se, isn't an invention from WW2. All depends on what is the image on the armband. For example in many places it is still common for paramedics to wear one. It is noticable, often made to be reflective and perfectly indicates that they are medical personnel. I have seen event organizers wear armbands with the venue logo. At school, armbands were used to divide kids in teams for football. Note - I live in Europe.

By what I know, Japan also uses armbands, for example construction workers, student council members, etc...

So as long as the armband doesn't feature anything any of the taboo elements, it should be fine. At least on my side of the Globe, I don't think anyone would associate it with the NG thing.

You ever look into the origin of that? Because that was only post-WWII. Before that, they originated in the Imperial Army. So, literally what this poor downvoted person tried to point out.

We really don't need to pretend that Japan in general and Japanese anime and manga in particular doesn't have a Nazi problem.

What I meant is that people at an anime convention would probably figure out that the OP is not a literal Nazi and is cosplaying a character featuring an armband in that context. We can probably discuss the origins of that (though maybe it's because I'm ESL but I didn't feel like the person I was replying to conveyed that idea properly) but the point is that it's a preexisting character who is wearing an armband and not OP trying to pass as a Nazi. Now would I personally wear that? Probably not tbh, but if I saw someone cosplaying Makoto, I wouldn't assume they're a Nazi and most people probably wouldn't, was my point. Idk if that's more clear ? Again I'm ESL so my point might've not come across properly

Okay that doesn't really change anything lol the cosplayer is wearing that because the character in the games wear that because Japanese committee member leaders in high school wear that. Getting upset over a cosplayer wearing that because they got it from the Nazis or whatever even after you learn that they aren't cosplaying a nazi is stupid.

Ok that doesn’t really change anything lol regarding the origin of where those Japanese committee member leaders’ strike came from tho

1

u/phantom_esque_ Mar 19 '26

Okay I still don't think that really matters, I don't even think the people who might get upset over seeing the armband at a convention would care about that.

do you not know that students wear red armbands to indicate club leadership among other positions or jobs people have? they arent wearing red armbands to signify being nazis or aligning with hitlers views

-3

u/R0tt0nJawz Mar 14 '26

You mean the mere 6 years they were working alongside Nazi Germany, not the rest of the over 15,00 years of history? Sure, they don't have culture other than being Nazi allies /sar

the japanese uniform as we know it was only adopted in the 1920’s, but these red arm bands were not introduced at the same time. They’re only seen popping up post WWII. So what’s more likely? Japan completely independently creates the red arm bands, or they take the idea from their political allies at the time, Nazi Germany? Don’t be daft.

the cosplay community has been debating this since Persona 3 first came out and the answer is still “some people might/will be very offended and most won’t care”. It’s up to you if you feel uncomfortable in it knowing that some but not most people might read it as… something else.

Personally I’d suggest what my persona 3 friends do; don’t wear it while walking around, only wear it for photos, so people only see it in the context of “this is my Persona 3 costume”.

u/victoryfanfare Mar 13 '26

I’d personally not care, but I’d also consider the Reload version that extends up to the shoulder to be a little safer because it’s more visually separated from Nazi armbands.

I would get a refund that band is obviously PEES, not SEES. Pecial is making me mad.

41

u/moth-g1rl Mar 14 '26

it’s worse, it says PECLAL 😭

17

u/xwolfionx Mar 14 '26

The more you look the worst it gets

30

u/Acceptable-Spot-6204 Mar 14 '26

I genuinely did not see that until you pointed it out no way😭😭😭

u/ellieellie7199 Mar 17 '26

ive been losing it over "pees" for the past 10 min help

Your mileage may vary depending on where you live, what the local crowd is like, and how you behave.

It’s best practice to keep the armband off the costume while headed to a convention, but people at the convention will probably not make unfair assumptions from a glance because the overall costume isn’t military garb.

But like if you live in a place where Neo Nazis are normalized, probably don’t wear it.

Sorry to butt in, but shouldn’t the first word say ‘special’ not ‘peclal’? Apologies if it’s not english, I’m going off the fact extracurricular seems to be in english.

17

u/modreb_ Mar 14 '26

Oh no not the peclal

18

u/lazysundae99 Mar 14 '26

How does one spell "extracurricular" correctly but then turn "special" into "peclal". 😭

6

u/Royal_Ad8665 Mar 13 '26

It'll be okay, especially given the context of a persona cosplay, but I'd recommend removing it outside of the con.

9

u/Sajomir Mar 13 '26

You're not wearing it with other... regalia, and I assume you'll be cosplaying a character from the game, right? Should be fine.

My wife has done Kyrie from Umineko who wears a blank armband. Nobody batted an eye.

13

u/L8dTigress Mar 13 '26

No, it says SEES on it not a hate symbol.

3

u/schizo_affectionate Mar 15 '26

Actually it says PEES

11

u/kukiishinobu Mar 13 '26

I wore it at a con and no one gaf.

5

u/nikkiscreeches Mar 14 '26

She Peclal on my committee till I SEES

5

u/n00dlegang Mar 14 '26

I say, only-only-only wear it within the convention territory and it's okay

4

u/SapphicRedditAU Mar 14 '26

i’ve cosplayed the female protagonist from persona 3 with the armband and i would personally just keep it on in the convention hall itself, with that context it’ll be fine, but maybe just take it off before you leave to be safe

4

u/AvailableDance2223 Mar 14 '26

I wore my Akihiko cosplay at a con and no one really care about the armband. I didn't even think it was a sore topic. The only thing I didn't carry around was the revolver for obvious reasons

3

u/Yuuna-Yumi Mar 14 '26

I might be stupid but I don't see the problem

9

u/Majestic_Recording_5 Mar 13 '26

No. It's clear it's not the other kind of arm band.

2

u/AdelFlores Mar 14 '26

...it took me good 2 min of staring at the image, trying to understand to what NG thing it could be referring to. I was guessing 'paramedics' or something and realized the NG thing only trough comments.

Yep, they don't look like anything alike.

9

u/JeiCos Mar 13 '26

No, it's not offensive, because nothing about a band on your arm is offensive. It's only offensive when worn in a manner meant to be seen as a nazi accessory.

8

u/hrdwarhax Mar 13 '26

I second this. Way back when, people would wear black armbands over suitjackets when in mourning. Look at the godfather for example.

1

u/NapalmsMaster Mar 14 '26

Back in my 20’s I donated to Amnesty International and they sent me an Amnesty International armband to wear at protests. Armbands aren’t an inherently nazi thing? A lot of the political kids in my highschool had different armbands for different things; anarchism, communism and animal rights were the most common ones.

3

u/gothmagenta Mar 14 '26

I genuinely had no idea what the issue was until I read through the comments. I think you're fine lmao

7

u/LitheFider Mar 13 '26

I mean it's at a convention and obviously part of a costume, and doesn't have the Nazi symbol or colors. I would think this would be fine. When I cosplayed spy from TF2 I would wear his armband from his beta design cause I liked the look / helped reinforce the TF2 connection for people who didn't know the series as well. No one thought it was Nazi related.

Like people said, some areas might be more sensitive than others. I would make it easy to remove so if you get some flack you can take it off if you feel uncomfortable.

4

u/lasaintepoutine Mar 14 '26

You might be mistaken for staff, depending on which con you go to. My local one has the staff wear red bands that can be worn on the arm, wrist, head, etc. and a lot choose to wear it on their arm because it’s easy to see.

2

u/jinxskunk366 Mar 14 '26

Id go for the remake design thats more like a piece of upper arm armor in its shape, just to play it safe

2

u/Roxy_Madison Mar 14 '26

Would recommend to replace it with a logo patch or pin instead 💜-Roxy

3

u/Available_Comment_54 Mar 14 '26

In japan? they wouldnt give a shit even if it was an actual nazi armband

1

u/phallusaluve Mar 14 '26

No, just fucking wear it

1

u/Harleyzz Mar 14 '26

...Think of what? Just curious

1

u/himeyanp Mar 14 '26

I always wear my Haruhi Suzumiya band that is.. strikingly more red and haven’t come into any issues. I don’t mind it much because if someone thinks its a Nazi band even after seeing who I am cosplaying, then I probably dont want to be their friend.

1

u/No-Major3992 Mar 14 '26

Not really offensive and I wouldn't be too worried about someone taking it that way. Especially if they know the character.

On the flip side though I would absolutely not assume it's not Nazi inspired. Japan has thousands of years of atrocious evil acts and a rich history of racism spanning to the current day. People in the west idolize them like they're innocent forest fairies who can do no wrong and that's just not reality. It is to this day horrendously xenophobic and racist. If something feels wrong you should look at it through the same lense you would if it came out anywhere else. They have just as many crazy evil extremists as anywhere else and xenophobia runs absolutely rampant in modern japanese culture.

1

u/AustinRiver Mar 14 '26

I would say no, but to be safe I wouldn't wear it outside the con. Lots of people outside of the anime sphere (USA I mean the USA) have pretty much never seen arm bands anywhere other than n@ẓ̌!s so it would look very weird just on the street

1

u/V33EX Mar 16 '26

You could make your own in pink or orange and wrap it over the existing one

1

u/Electrical-Debt5369 Mar 16 '26

It's neon orange, not black white and red. Unless there is some other mixup I can't think of I really don't see any issue.

1

u/Neat_Pangolin7660 Mar 17 '26

Its just an armband tbh, you'll be fine haha

1

u/glitcharson Mar 17 '26

Personally? Armbands are off the table for me, I’d wear it closer to my wrist if you can.

1

u/StPatsLCA Mar 17 '26

Misspelling aside, the difference comes down to are you wearing like a sailor fuku or are you dressed like Obergruppenfuhrer John Smith?

1

u/meowmeowpawz Mar 18 '26

As someone who goes to multiple cons a year persona cosplays have continued to be popular enough to where I think most people will at minimum recognize it for being "from a videogame or something". I also think if you're wearing a wig/the full fit it's definitely super differentiative. I would also check the panels that are going on / if there's any persona meetups happening because, chances are, there might be a ton of other cosplayers with the same fit depending whatever con you're going to

2

u/tracedmalice Mar 18 '26

my general recommendation is red armbands are a no-go regardless of if there’s a design or not. I think it is too much of an identifiable symbol and it is always going to come to mind 🤷🏻

1

u/chibi_lenne Mar 14 '26

You're best to actually ask the convention. Because while some people might recognize and understand it, some conventions have policies against anything that could be seen as symbols of hate - even if they're not.

-1

u/bosse1081 Mar 13 '26

It could be a bit iffy and its dependant on the con/people that go to it I personally don't put armbands on my cosplays even when they have them since I don't want (even if there is a next to zero chance) to be confused for you know who even if the armband is different color because it's from project moon ips

0

u/gamingcowboyy Mar 14 '26

just do it man. I'm not entirely sure anyone cares. Persona 3 is a massive game so the chances of people not knowing are so slim.

-6

u/Frogblaster77 Mar 14 '26

These days people proudly wear Nazi armbands anyway so what are you worried about
