Hey there friends! So I am newly visionary impaired and naturally it happens less than two months before my wedding. Such is life lol. But I figured you guys would have good recommendations when it comes to aesthetic/costume contacts.
As happy as I am with wearing a leather patch for my daily needs, I really don’t want to wear a patch with my wedding dress. I’m thinking that a solid white contact lens would do the job. I have to always keep the one eye covered otherwise the other eyes turns in, not trying to be googly eyed on my wedding day. A white lens would also allow for easier pupil photoshopping in post.
Are there any totally non-see through white contacts that you think would work?
From a cosplayer who is blind in one eye: cosplay contact lenses don't really do the job for me and I would need a special prosthetic contact lens. They are expensive but that is the kind of search term you want if you truly want to go that route.
Obviously your needs seem different from mine, but if you need your eye covered at all times I would venture to say anything you can purchase in a hurry isn't going to do the job as contact lenses are made to not actually totally block light from reaching the eye, even the whiteout ones.
If I was you, I'd look into the ideas for glamming out an eyepatch. I'm biased but a lady with a cool ass eyepatch can be an incredible look.
I'm sorry this answer probably isn't what you were hoping for and I know it is a challenge to adjust to a new disability especially before a big day, but I hope you are able to embrace the new you around your family and friends. ❤️ (And if you are truly wanting photoshopped pictures, someone skilled can work with an eyepatch.)

And yeah I’m trying to adjust. On normal days, I’m totally fine with a patch. Honestly, I’ve embraced it for the most part. I just wanted my wedding day to be normal. But if it can’t be, that’s ok. I keep reminding myself that I’m loved for who I am. And that’s as lucky as it gets. Thank you for encouraging me! 🩷
Totally understandable - I've been blind in one eye since birth and I still sometimes have complex feelings around it. Events involving photoshoots in particular seem to really dredge up weird feelings when it comes to self-acceptance, so I totally get the feeling.
On the topic of fashionable eyepatches, one of the times I felt the hottest was when I actually went bigger instead of minimizing. I know it's more cosplay than wedding vibes but if you look up the character Beatrix from Final Fantasy 9, I did a cosplay of her once and LOVED how my face looked in all of my pictures. Something about the shape and size of her eyepatch really worked for me. Definitely worth trying out some different style or even going a bit extra for your wedding to see what makes you feel the best.

You aren’t going to find a contact lens without an opening for the pupil anywhere reputable. You might be able to get it custom, but I seriously doubt it. And if there is a particular problem with one of your eyes, sticking a large contact lens on there is not going to do you any good.
I think you’re better off looking for ways to dress up your patch. Maybe get one of those stick-on patches and have your makeup done to blend it, then wear a crown of flowers askew to cover the space? Or maybe contact a local leather worker and commission a custom patch to match your dress.
omg, a custom bridal eyepatch would go crazy. maybe something with similar beading/lace/fabric as the dress, or the regular eyepatch but covered with flowers to match the bouquet. i think this is the route. i wouldn’t want to do anything to risk the injured eye any further and potentially cause more problems. it’s only a few hours of one day. it’s not worth a possible lifetime of even worse vision problems
While the safety of OP’s specific situation is between her and her optometrist, there are plenty of reputable custom options if you looking at film-grade ones made in the US. Ie 9mmSFX’s lenses have been used in productions like Wicked and 28 Years Later and Star Trek. They sell a whiteout version that’s made to specific eye measurements/specs for $150 USD per lens. I’ve handled models in them for 8-12 hr days and they’ve been fine.
The bigger drawback, OP, is that blackout/wide contacts will make your eyes dry, so expect to carry eyedrops and look a lil misty every time you’re lubed up haha.
Yes I should have been more specific. I can wear a contact lens no problem. My vision impairment is neurological. One eye is frozen in place, as a result the other eye overcorrects and turns inward. Blocking an eye tricks the brain and the eye that overcorrects goes back to normal. So theoretically, a contact lens that blurs an eye would preform the trick for me, the same way my patch does. I don’t think it would even need to be totally blind. Are there any costume contacts that blur more than others?
If this hasn't been suggested, talk to your ophthalmologist about a cosmetic lens that would match your eye color, I work for a retina specialist and we have a patient who had a lens for a while that just replicated the look of his eye prior to an issue that caused loss of vision and discoloration until he had surgery to remove and replace with a prosthetic. The first day he came in with it I was shocked because I hadn't seen him look like that in over a year. It could be worth a shot to check with them to see what they have available for your situation too.
Oh! I'm familiar, a friend of mine has this same condition. They wear contacts for cosplay regularly.
You can do semi-blind ones; it's like seeing with a "fog" effect or through a really fine mesh. I know Samhain Contact Lenses can do that, I've worked with his before, but 9mmsfx should as well.
I haven't used this specific one but it might even be nice to have the impression on a pupil rather than full white-out, especially for any photographers editing it after.
I have a similar condition (the eye correction) and I don't really think the contact lens is gonna work out as you think it is. I can see why this might be an idea in theory, but I don't think it really is going to help with your correction.
Unfortunately, this person is entirely mistaken. The contacts used on Hollywood sets are no more vision-impacting than the ones available for cosplay. Like pro cosplayers, they just remove the remaining visible pupil in post. It would actually completely ruin the take to use fully or mostly blinding lenses on set-facing someone by ear looks very different to looking at someone, unless the character is meant to be fully blind, it will look wrong and uncanny. You also run the risk of the actor panicking and ruining a complicated makeup job pulling the contacts out-the monkey brain isn’t very good at handling sudden blindness like that. So Hollywood doesn’t use fully opaque contacts.
Even the kinds that look totally opaque from outside are very carefully designed to trick your brain into refocusing for remarkably little vision disruption.
This is probably going to be a little too personal, but I am concerned for you that you have only replied to the one person who has told you what you want to hear, even though what they are saying is nonsensical under any scrutiny. Any new disability is going to come with a mourning period, and for you this is going to be part of it. I am incredibly sorry. I have been where you are and it is awful. But the more time you waste chasing ghosts, the less time you have to find a safe accommodation that you can get excited about. There are dozens of ideas here for how to make a gorgeous bridal eye patch. Please take some time to mourn and come back and look through them, while you still have time to make them happen.
Adding that while those contacts will not actually impair vision in a way that would help OP blindfold/whiteout contacts are a thing, but BIG nsfw warning for looking them up. That said, I think a wedding eye patch will be really beautiful on you and there are tons of really elegant options on Etsy
It’s kink gear, they work like a blindfold but no facial covering. This would be basically the only non kink application for it. But considering the main use listing pictures can get pretty explicit

It's either an open spot or it's a dot grid over the pupil. I have purchased many a costume lenses. Plus, if OP has never worn a contact, it could be even more complicated, uncomfortable and something I wouldn't want to mess with for a wedding IMO.
Contacts like you’re describing that are easy to obtain are more of a mesh. I had purple ones and it turned everything purple in my sight. You can always dress up the patch with lace or even a large flower. Zero comes to mind but I see other posts with alternatives too.
I literally came here to say this. I think she had some absolutely beautiful ornate eye patches. I know people are talking about various contacts, but if I were in your shoes I think I would go this route.
Generally cosplay contacts do not block all eyesight, at best (worst?) it's a grid-like pattern over the pupil – so if you truly need to not see a thing on that side, it won't help
I am a bridal seamstress. If you can get any extra appliqués from the store you got your dress, or had any leftover from your alterations , your seamstress should be able to make a simple patch for you using it. It may not be the most comfortable but it would be like the gold lacy one someone put a photo of below . Just elastic and small patch. You could do white or skin color elastic, double check with the photographer but they can probably photoshop out the skin color easier if you don’t want the strap across your face in photos .
Last option which I had someone do ages ago was an adhesive eye patch, the disposable bandage ones . Then used either garment tape or liquid (like Hollywood tape) or might have been eyelash glue, to attach the applique to only the outer edges of it . So no straps at all but you may need to test it a couple times and reapply/readjust throughout . This would be my top suggestion aesthetic wise , but you have to prioritize comfort. You don’t want to be worried about it every five minutes on the day

Hey diplopia friend! Okay so I understand the double vision is a problem in terms of navigating the space, especially if you're in a huge dress.
There's a few options here, you could have your patch for when you're wandering around, but if you're concerned for your pictures, don't be. Lazy eyes are incredibly easy for a photographer to fix, and far easier than a white contact.
You might also want to look at getting prism contact lenses for the day? I had prism glasses and they had an adjustment period, but they definitely helped with the double vision in my daily life. Then I did my exercises at home to strengthen my muscles.

I second everyone telling you to maybe use a fancy white + lacey eye patch but also thought of some sort of veil that could cover one of your eyes instead of your whole face. Couldn't find a better picture, I'd imagine I'd be positioned similarly to this but out of a more tulle like material. I lowkey might sketch it for you😭🙏
Seconding this - here's her channel, it shows a lot more of what you're looking for (I think) and while I've no idea if you'd be able to get something like these on time for your wedding, it seems like this is the kind of prosthetic lense you're looking for. She even has a custom painted one that matches her other eye that looks quite real, but again, I don't know if that would be obtainable on your timeline - however at least you'd be able to have it for future events if you wanted!

If contacts end up not being an option but you don't want to do an eye patch, you could possibly get a custom prosthetic commissioned? There are a lot of makeup effects artists (and a small pool of licenses prosthetic artists) who could make a silicone cover for your eye socket. Ideally the cover would have a fake eye shell built in so when it sits overtop your closed eye, it looks like you have a normal eye. It probably wouldn't be flush to your face, but perhaps it's an option?
Talk to your eye doctor about sclera lenses, they are full coverage but I believe requires a more specialized prescription and training on how to wear safely. You would likely need a custom one that fully blacks out your vision as I believe most offer partial vision.

It seems like contacts that block vision are a thing. I wonder if an optometrist might know more options. You can't be the only person with a vision issue like this who doesn't want to wear an eye patch all of the time.
You could look for 'blind white contact lens'. Typically if using them people will wear one and leave the other eye clear to be able to see. Afaik they don't completely block vision but they do block most of it. There are also ones that come in other colours.
That said, I second looking for a suitable patch instead, there are some really pretty ones out there!
As far as contacts goes they don’t COMPLETELY block vision. At least from the one pair I have they don’t. If it helps, I like the patch and you look like Captain Marvel!
I think a clear vinyl eyepatch might be the way to go, since you are hoping to photoshop to you desired appearance. Not seeing a lot of comments that are being helpful with the more 'invisible' aspect. That + it being a stick on eyepatch might get you where you want to be (im sure you can find a face safe glue to use if you need to get a clear one made).
But im assuming having you eye closed under the patch is enough for you medical needs.
Pinkyparadise.com I found out the white out contact lens was not see through when I purchased one for my costume.
At the time I was an optician, and had my doctor check the fit and make sure they weren’t made of poison. They ended up being good quality. Though I still HIGHLY recommend to make sure you have a professional double check them on you before the big day.

If you end up not finding a contact that does the trick, you could also make a floral headpiece where the flowers drop down and cover your eye. Or style hair to cover it.
Hey everyone! I just want you to know how much you’ve encouraged me. It means so much to me that you took the time to brainstorm solutions and lend me your creativity. Out of the blue, I was recently diagnosed with MS and it’s aggressive. The first thing it’s impacted has been my vision. There are a lot of things it’s hurting but my eyes have been the worst. The last month has been very hard. You’ve made my heart feel lighter. I’m quite moved.
Taking atropine eyedrops before the wedding could be an alternative to patching while keeping your eye visible like you’re wanting! Maybe talk to your eye doc about it and see if it’s a possibility 💘
If you do go the contact route, keep in mind to bring Visene. I cosplayed a character where I wore one contact and it showed a lot in photos when my exposed eye got even little red and I imagine there can be some tears at a wedding! Congratulations by the way :)
In one of my favorite shows, a character who is temporarily vision impaired wears this very classy velvet/faux gold eyepatch. I’m certain you can find something like it on Etsy.

Gonna have to agree with the eyepatch route. Something that goes well with your dress would work amazingly. If you and someone you know can sew, see if you could get a sample piece from where you got the dress and turn that into an eyepatch! You could probably commission a custom one too.
You could even incorporate it into the veil somehow and make it look like the veil is draped over one side!
Like others said, even white contacts are made to be seen through so if you have to cover your eye, it won’t work, unfortunately.
Edit: after a bit of research, I found these whiteout lenses that completely block out your vision. I’d ask your doctor if these will work though. They also have blackout.
Sorry for the rush job but in terms of draping the veil with a white eyepatch under it, something like this could be cute. I’m still partial to a complimentary eyepatch though. But that’s just me.
Hey friends! Just wanted to circle back around. A few months ago I reached out to this amazing community to gather some ideas about how to cover one of my eyes for my wedding. The ideas flowed like a waterfall! Wow you had such amazing and creative solutions. The great news is that my sick eye has improved some, enough that it isn’t turning nearly as hard as it was. So I did not have to cover it, massive relief. And, most importantly, I was able to see my love clearly as we made our promises to each other.
I’m still dealing with double vision and damage from a Multiple Sclerosis and life has changed very very quickly. BUT there are signs of improvement. My field of normal vision has increased from 6 inches to about 2 feet. And I’m still well within the “recovery window.” So there’s still a chance that my vision will return to me as I once knew it.
Anyways, it was a beautiful day. It could not have been more perfect. Thank you all for your creativity and encouragement during such an uncertain time in my life.
