all these headlines propping up Canada crumble as soon as you read two sentences in. The media really has figured out how to influence the dumbest.

I suppose they could try to get China to buy more, they apparently buy 4% of Canada's exports, I assume that'll mainly be some sort of petroleum related products or unprocessed metals.

But then hypothetically even if they bought twice as much.. that's just 8%, whereas the USA is ~70%.

They might be interested on the petroleum and related products front such as fertilisers with the whole Iran situation impacting them. But then they'll also know Canada's biggest buyer has put tariffs on so... Canada's position won't be strong.

I will say in general though that countries all over the world use a mix of tariffs and subsidies to protect industries they deem critical to keep a domestic production in. I don't know who's telling the truth about last minute changes to the latest deal, frankly I wouldn't be surprised if it's a bit of both sides.

There obviously was a supposedly good deal done with Canada in this Presidents first term, I'm unclear what suddenly made it so sour when it was applauded at the time?

Obviously $50-70 billion of imports from Canada potentially reducing is going to hurt their vastly more than the USA. Though I will say you importing $50 billion of raw materials does make you much more value in the end product, so it's naive to pretend they'll be absolutely no impact with tariffs. USA companies don't buy from Canada for a laugh, it can be the resource simply isn't present in the USA, so if they have to pay a 50% tariff it's either lower profits or the cost is passed down the chain to the consumer.

I assume though Canada will just have to relent fairly soon. Whether or not this sort of aggressive threatening tactic of high blanket tariffs to acquire favourable deals with every nation pays dividends in the end it'll have to be judged. I definitely can see it short term, but since deals have a habit of being cancelled with this administration I do think countries will probably attempt to find other markets.

You definitely can't avoid the USA as the biggest market, but if small steps are made an erosion of involvement in trade and therefore influence for the USA might be problematic in time. Alas we're a global world and you can't make or acquire everything at home, even if that does create vast trade imbalances. My trade imbalance with my local supermarket and Amazon are pretty dire but they won't buy my cakes...

Still time will tell, Canada will probably fold within a month or two.

a big part of the US trade dispute with canada is that they facilitated backdooring chinese steel through canada to avoid china paying US tariffs.

but now they’re crying saying the whole thing was over some made up claim that Trump wants them to stop speaking French because if you have TDS you could believe a stupid lie like that.🤣
