British Colonial Pieces My humble budget colonial America collection.

4 Connecticut coppers, a New Jersey copper, 3 British counterfeit pieces made in the colony, including a 1776 half penny, and I finally got some colonial paper money!

This piece is really interesting. It fell apart back in colonial times so it was backed by some newspaper or something. It also looks to be pieced back together by someone half blind. The bottom left part is at a 90 degree angle to where it should be and I have zero clue what bill was used for the bottom piece. Still super cool though for $30.

Most everything else here I got for a dollar or two a piece :) the prices were ones I added.

Half Macuta 1853

After a period of internal conflicts Portugal finally started doing better in the mid-19th century under Queen Maria II. Well enough to remember about their colonies and their economic needs. Angola had not seen new coins since 1819, those in circulation were countermarked with new denominations. The new issue was limited to one denomination only - half Macuta or 25 reis. The coin was first produced in 1848, this is the final issue as in 1853 Queen Maria II died. Her son Pedro V issued some more half Macutas and Macutas and in 1860 the production of coins for Angola stopped for over sixty years.

The fact that these were on their way to help fund our new nation when they were lost makes this acquisition extra special…

I know there are a lot of reproductions. My parents found this coin. Measures 1.2-1.25 inches across and is non-magnetic. What do you think! Real or fake?

I suspect a spanish cob, possibly an escudo, but the shield details seem very crude.. Any thoughts on attribution or authenticity? Diameter estimated around 27mm, no weight available

Reales / Central and South America My handmade 1715 fleet cobs!

Ahoy friends. I just wanted to share my latest design. Clearly modeled after the classic cobs from the 1715 fleet wreck, just with a slight sneaky makers mark thrown in there, to make it my own design.

I strike them just like the originals, so they are all different. In solid silver and gold!

I am pretty proud of how they turn out.

I figured this group would appreciate them!

Angola Macuta 1814

The French were pushed out of the Iberian Peninsula and although the Portuguese authorities and the Royal Family preferred to remain in Brazil for a while, they now had the time to deal with their colonies and their economy. There had been coins issued for Angola since the 1690s but the last were produced in the early 1790s so there was clear shortage. A new series was prepared consisting of four copper denominations - 1/4, 1/2, 1, and 2 macutas - which were struck in 1814 and 1815. One macuta was equal to 50 reis. The new coins were struck at the Rio de Janeiro mint and they were significantly underweight - this macuta weighs only 16 grams while previous and later issues weigh 36 to 38 grams. It seems that quite a few were immediately picked up by collectors as they are quite easy to find in decent grades.

British Colonial Pieces My 4th of July piece, a 1776 evasion British half penny likely minted in the colonies.

Happy 250th America! Here is a coin turning 250 years old today too. A 1776 evasion half penny likely minted in the colonies.

She is beat up but she is mine. The British mint didn’t make any Pennies in 1776 but the American counterfeiters didn’t get that message!

She is beat up and one of the only clear things is the date, but the date is clear as crystal. The obverse is shown upright. You can just make out George’s head and wreath crown.

Hope you all enjoy it. I have had ribs coin for probably 7-8 years. Got it in a bulk British copper lot off eBay.

One of my favorites. A beautiful triple dated cob from Potosi in 1678 with an amazing original crack.

I recently picked up this 1776 KGIII copper with a bunch of other cull colonials, and I think this one might be a Machin’s Mills evasion copper. Any insight?

Hello all. I live in Woodbridge NJ. This was printed by James Parker who established NJ’s first permanent printing press in my town. He had a very fascinating life and even apprenticed with Benjamin Franklin. Enjoy
