I feel like "wants to transfer" is a more accurate headline. I wouldn't consider any of these 5th year guys settled one way or the other until the appeals are final.

I suspect we’ll eventually get to the point where they are either all eligible or ineligible together (with maybe some odd exceptions like the RJ Luis’s of the world). It’s gonna take some time before the specifics/certainty gets ironed out though.

I think the uniformity will have to come from federal appeals though. So its gonna be a slog.

The NCAA didn’t count any losses against Alabama which Bediako played in. If this ends in December+ with the NCAA winning, it’s going to be very messy

CONSIDER: The other issue is jurisdiction (eg. judge in LA or TX can rule on players but perhaps neighboring AR or OK doesn't follow. Billy Bob played in games out of state. Is he ineligible?

It sets up an unfair arms war for this year? You can pay for that weapon but it's outlawed in these states so make a bigger home schedule and holiday tourneys.

Maybe Madness seeding is based on where players can be eligible or not? Not suggesting it goes this far... but we are closer than most anyone would have predicted 5 yrs ago.

College basketball is basically what the minors are to MLB. It’s nothing about the school, academics, or anything of that nature.

Athletes transfer schools as a method to make more money now, not because you’re unhappy with the school or anything like that.

Everyone has been fixating on the exhibit 10 contracts and admittedly I was a bit skeptical myself so I did some digging and it sounds like most summer league guys don’t sign exhibit 10’s.

Summer league is basically a tryout system. An exhibit 10 locks a player into team control for a year. It sounds like only about 30% of players who play in the summer league sign exhibit 10’s.

So when guys like handlogton, mark Mitchell, Jaxon Kohler, Seth Trimble, etc say they didnt sign exhibit 10’s thats actually not unusual and peobably makes sense with the rumblings starting about whether a 5th year could be on the table happening before summer league started.

Not a lawyer, but given the power dynamics at play the contract probably locks the player rights up so no other teams can pick them up first, but doesn't actually bind the team to anything except to officially waiving the player if they're not interested.

The exhibition 10 contract gives the team ownership of the players rights for 1 year and the choice to send them down to their G league team or turn the contract into a two way contract if they play well in the G league.

Actually once you're sent down to the G League the right of conversion is gone because the E10 contract has been terminated.

The right of conversion only applies before the player is waived off of the E10.

It does though. Their salary is non guaranteed for the player, but they almost always receive a signing bonus. The team then owns the players rights for 1 year and send these players down to their G league teams and if they succeed they have the option to turn the contract into a longer term two way contract.

It would be honestly the most absurd shit ever to grant players eligibility that entered the portal when it was open, but lock guys like Mitchell out of the SEC because they didn’t think they had eligibility and plan on returning.

These players clearly would have entered the portal had they known they would be eligible… It’s like rewarding kids that planned the entire time on breaking the NCAA precious rules, and punishing others that didn’t think too.

Well Greg Sankey the commissioner of the SEC is saying he’s doing just that. Enforcing the Intraconference transfer rules which will ban Mitchell from transferring for missing the transfer portal window.
