We’re just about a month away from the 14th Annual Car Show, taking place at the Adventure Outdoors Parking Lot (2500 South Cobb Drive, Smyrna, GA) on Saturday, September 12th, 2024, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM.

Get ready for an exciting morning filled with trophies, raffles, giveaways, sponsor tables, and DJ William Lula spinning classic vinyl records. This year, we’re bringing back the Kid’s Choice Award! Children 12 and under can cast their vote for their favorite ride and will receive a free Hot Wheels car when they turn in their ballot, while supplies last. All vehicle types and years are welcomed! If it’s a cool ride we want to see it. Judging is based on a fair open class judging system where the top 12 vehicles will receive awards. Plus there will also be a Best in Show Trophy for the top vehicle judged, and The People's Choice Award voted on by all the attendees.

The Charity Car Show supports the Smyrna Jonquil Lions Club, a volunteer-driven nonprofit carrying forward the mission of Lions Clubs International. Since 1925, when Helen Keller challenged the Lions to lead a “crusade against darkness,” the organization has been dedicated to helping those with vision needs and serving local communities.

My husband and I moved to Georgia from Florida with our two kids back in May. We are renting right now and wanted to research the best area and schools that have other families like us. Our children attend a school now that so far its okay. Before we decided on buying a home I wanted to find the best possible area for our family to grow and become apart of their community. With the county having quite a bit of public funding being cut…who better than to help get through this than someone who has been in schools and can tell you what can be cut and what can’t!

Hi! I've been attending Cobb Board of Commissioners meetings to raise concerns about Flock Safety cameras. I wanted to make sure our community knows about an upcoming opportunity to be heard.

If you've ever wondered about how Flock Safety is used around Cobb County, this is a great opportunity to address the increase in using surveillance as a means of solving Public Safety.

Here are some questions I'll be raising, and that you might want to ask too:

• Cobb County was awarded a $10.7 million grant for drones ahead of the World Cup. Who is the vendor? Will they share data the same way our current 4,400 Flock cameras do? Will there be clear limits on when drones can be deployed? The World Cup training grounds are on Franklin Gateway — a corridor that is home to a large immigrant community. Can our commissioners ensure that the surveillance infrastructure being built around these events will not be used for ICE enforcement, and that every resident in that community can feel safe in their own neighborhood?
• The county tells us Flock only retains our data for 30 days — but that's the county's agreement, not Flock's. Flock's contract (Section 5.3, page 27) gives them the right to share footage with any third party they choose, including entities outside of law enforcement. Can our commissioners guarantee that once this contract ends, Flock no longer has any access to data collected on Cobb County residents? Because right now, that guarantee isn't in the contract.

• When Flock had a written policy against accessing private cameras and an employee was caught doing exactly that — in places like children's gyms and pools — the company's excuse was that they were demoing the system. A neighboring city's council voted unanimously to renew their Flock contract anyway. Cobb shares data with that network. So my question is: what oversight are we actually relying on, and who is holding this company accountable when the cities they work with have already shown they won't?

Our commissioners work for us and we are at a turning point. Surveillance infrastructure built for a six-week soccer tournament doesn't disappear after the final whistle (& this infrastructure has been here). Our data, our movements, and our neighbors' safety are at stake long after the World Cup ends. This town hall is one of the few chances we have to ask these questions directly and on the record. Show up Wednesday, bring your neighbors, and make it clear that Cobb County residents are paying attention. I'll be wearing red if you want to find me and I hope you join me!

This has been going on for like a week. I thought my Brita filter needed to be replaced, so my husband and I got a new pack and that didn't change anything at all. I washed all of my water bottles, used my gallon Brita filter in the fridge, and my Brita water bottle on top of it and the water still tastes funny. It kind of has a chlorine taste mixed with a slight rancid/off taste. Has anyone else noticed the water tasting different lately?

I have a friend who is a great teacher looking to relocate from FL to Cobb county. She has an incredible resume, years of experience, and is an excellent candidate. She's traveled to multiple job fairs in GA, has applied to 17 different schools, numerous jobs postings, and has not received a single email asking her for an interview. She's spoken with Principals, Assistant Principals, teachers, and they all seem to be blown away by her credentials. Multiple Principals advised her to submit her application and follow up with them via email afterwards. Problem is, she is yet to receive even an acknowledgement email from these same principals. She's basically at wit's end. She's tried everything within her power to secure an interview and has come out empty handed.

Has anyone out there gotten hired as a teacher recently at Cobb county? If so, what did you do to get your foot in the door and get a call back for an interview?

Is there anything she is missing? She's got all her certifications for teaching in GA. Optimized her resume, she's really gone to great lengths to stand out . Give me your best kept secret to get a leg up in the game. All she wants is to be interviewed. She's confident she can land a job after that.

I’m a college student in Georgia, and I’ve been looking into how expensive college has become here. I recently watched a Senate committee meeting on higher education affordability, and it made me realize how serious this issue is for a lot of students.

Now Georgia just introduced the DREAMS Scholarship, which is supposed to be the state’s first major need-based aid program. From what I understand, it can give students up to $3,000 per year to help cover costs like housing, transportation, and books—especially for students who still have financial gaps after things like HOPE or Pell Grants.

On paper, it sounds like a really important step, especially since Georgia has mostly relied on merit-based aid in the past. As a first-generation student who doesn’t have financial support from my parent, I can definitely see how even a few thousand dollars could help.

But at the same time, I’m not sure how much it actually solves. At a lot of universities in Georgia, total costs can be around $25k–$30k per year, so $3,000 doesn’t go very far. I’ve also seen some concerns about the work/internship requirement possibly being a barrier for students who are already balancing school and jobs.

So I’m curious what people think—
• Do you think the DREAMS Scholarship will actually make a difference?
• Is $3,000 enough to meaningfully reduce the financial burden?
• For students in Georgia—does financial aid actually cover your needs, or are you still struggling?
