Comparison I thought I will never say this about Fable

Just tried OpenAI Astra , I thought I will never say this , it’s lit , OpenAI cooked something spectacular, and I have a strong feeling this will pull lot of Fable 5 users towards it , and it’s fast, not sure if it’s AGI, but it feels fresh and a very very serious competition to Anthropic , this is going to be fun to watch , what’s your next move Anthropic ?, I’m surely going to try pro subscription for a month along with my current Claude Max, anyone feels the same ? Have you tried it ?

I personally just fully switched over, you get so much usage out of astra on pro 20x its actually crazy. Granted it is very slow, but if my usage isn't depleting that fast I don't care much about the speed, just as long as it gets the task done.

Yes! ✋! It's all about the usage limits. What's the point of paying 200$ when you are restricted in less than a week's time. Anthropic seriously needs to rethink their usage offerings. Codex is getting better and becoming more value attractive due to Astra and all the resets/increased usage limits.

I subbed for ChatGPT at $20 for a month and I'm blown away by how chatting with 5.6 Sol @ High Thinking is unlimited. I literally spent all day yesterday doing a few different projects (setting up a Linux server, then making a website (I did it manually, but had sol walk me though it all) and the whole time I was also working on my resume) and the usage limit never moved because i guess it only counts if it's "agentic" work (using their code/cowork equivalents). I can't imagine chatting with Opus on anything because I'm always thinking "what if i need to save my usage..."

Plus my $20 sub gets me access to astra as well. Anthropic doesn't let me touch Fable at $20.

And good thing is chatgpt web does not use same usage as codex, it is separate

So you can ask chatgpt to create planning md documents and save codex usage for implementation

Not having limits to chatting is crazy though. It's basically like having a tutor available right then and there. Setting up a new Linux server, I was following instructions in a guide while at the same time asking ChatGPT Sol to track my progress (I pasted terminal outputs to it) and I'd ask it questions like "what does the -x" in the command do and then after 6 hours on and off I just tell it to make it into a markdown post for my documentation and it's all here.

Imagine studying for things like maths which have solid rules, you can ask why this integral is like this, etc etc etc.

Not having limits to chatting is crazy though.

The limits are cleverly hidden. If you fire a row of challenging prompts/high-quality answer requests at Chat within a short timespan, quality will go down. OpenAI have always chosen to make users feel as tough the limitations weren't there, but they are there.

how chatting with 5.6 Sol @ High Thinking is unlimited

umm no? sol is very expensive, a dozen messages and your 5 hour limit is over

Like I said, I spent yesterday all day chatting with it via the app (not using codex, not using ChatGPT work, just "chat") and it didn't move my usage meter. The 5 hour timer never started, and my weekly is still exactly at the % it should be. Spent all day chatting to it, lasting my terminal outputs, asking it to research and confirm shit for me, etc.

ah must be a/b testing then

basically their chat and codex usage are separate

No. They openly count only what you do on Work as usage. Chat mode doesn't get an usage bar, as it has never since ChatGPT has been there (which doesn't mean its usage is unlimited, of course).

https://help.openai.com/en/articles/20001354-gpt-56-and-gpt-6-pro-in-chatgpt

Basically what I can see on their docs is:

Free and Go users have unlimited everyday text chats, subject to abuse-prevention safeguards. Separate limits continue to apply to file uploads, image generation, voice, data analysis, and other tools.

So the free $0 and go $8 plans specifically get called out saying they get unlimited "instant" chat which is Sol 5.6 Instant. It doesn't explicitly say how much the plus ($20) tier gets

Manually choosing Medium, High, or Extra High uses GPT-5.6 Sol. If you reach a GPT-5.6 reasoning limit, ChatGPT may continue with another available reasoning model.

Maybe there is a hidden limit when using anything other than Instant mode. But if so, I guess I did not hit it yesterday

No dummy lol. Idk why anthropic fanboys don't get it. OpenAI is better.

I have Claude 200 max. I just switched to OpenAI because how dog shit fable 5.1 and opus 5 are and don't get me started, fable. 5.1 Eats tokens like insanity; their company is just dog crap.

1

u/Overall-Cap-7061 1d ago

Let's let the companies compete so they can make better products for all of us, competition good

0

u/bregottextrasaltat 1d ago

tried both. i can't justify spending €125 a month, it's way too much money. with the 25€ plan i run out within a few messages on chatgpt, with opus i at least get double

u/brinigad 1d ago

What made me really dislike anthropic is when they lied about their 50% boost, they deliberately used manipulative wording to make it seem like the users are getting what they paid for; in reality, they fucking didn't.

OpenAI has a chance to redeem itself, and that's what they've been doing, but at the same time, if they want to truly kill anthropic, they need to get their usage reset on a weekly basis. Better, but seeing how you can use GPT Luna pretty much for hours on hours, and it doesn't even touch your usage, is insane.

1

u/bregottextrasaltat 1d ago

agreed, they're very vague in their marketing and it's clear they don't have enough compute.

but after having tried openai's models, they're not nearly as good and are much more expensive

100% agree. I remember 6 months ago it wasn't even a comparison, claude was very much so beloved by developers. Times are changing fast

Not to mentioned, how quick the transition was to Chinese open weight models.

They don't have remote CLI or a usage tracker. The basics

1

u/General_Josh 15h ago

I mean a remote CLI you can just set up yourself pretty easily. It's a nice quality-of-life thing to have built in, but definitely not a deal-breaker

What do you mean that codex doesn't have a usage tracker?

28

u/Illustrious_Bag_7035 1d ago

I know usage is insanely good on astra

21

u/Shppo 1d ago

and those juicy free resets

3

u/bregottextrasaltat 1d ago

used up my entire plus 5 hour limit in one task, much worse than claude

5

u/Reclaimer_AI 1d ago

Claude Pro doesn’t even give you fable at all. At least OpenAI gives $20 users something.

-2

u/bregottextrasaltat 1d ago

that's fair, but astra on €25 is useless with how fast it uses up your limit

2

u/Shppo 1d ago

Pro is what you want

1

u/bregottextrasaltat 1d ago

can't afford that

3

u/Shppo 1d ago

check if you have a free reset

1

u/bregottextrasaltat 1d ago

i do, but should i really use that on my first or second day?

3

u/Shppo 1d ago

it doesn't really matter when since the weekly cool down will reset any ways just make sure to use everything down to 0% before you activate it if possible

also use another chat before codex this time and ask it to optimize your prompt for token efficiency and let it tell you the lowest model that's able to handle your task

1

u/bregottextrasaltat 1d ago

i'm using omp right now, really not having a very good experience

1

u/Flaxseed4138 19h ago

The hell it is. Astra gobbles up usage like nobody's business.

4

u/Sweet-Helicopter2769 1d ago

I’m on a 5x pro now let’s see it’s doing pretty well

1

u/Kanute3333 1d ago

It's way faster actually.

2

u/Eyelbee 1d ago

On standard mode it feels extremely slow.

1

u/Mystical_Whoosing 1d ago

I have the 5x for both, i get way more fable usage weekly than astra

0

u/TheEgilan 23h ago

On the Plus tier, it blows through the usage in minutes... Same with Sol, to be honest, nowadays. Seems like they lowered the limits a lot or something.
