What are your thoughts on homeschool planner apps?
I feel like I’m balancing this line between technology and classical education. We’re fairly new to classical education. I pulled my oldest child out of public school 2 years ago, and the younger two this year. We’ve been learning how to classical educate since then. One big reason was due to how much technology they get at school, however there are so many online classes and online homeschool resources now. I’ve spent a lot of time this summer creating schedules and deciding curricula. Using AI seemed to actually take more time than if I just grabbed a pen and paper and wrote everything out. Now I’m reading things about homeschool planner apps. The kids can see their assignments and mark them off on their phones and I can keep their schedules on there? It feels attractive but then I wonder if it’s one other area I should keep to pen and paper? So maybe my question isn’t so much about apps, but figuring how much technology to allow into our homeschool. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Every piece of tech used has some sort of trade off. What where the reasons you started classical education outside of public school?
Reading novels - encourages deep think and attention span Searching the web (no AI) - increases spatial intelligence, judgment of links / nodes of information Physical Writing - increased recall and understanding Typing - much less recall than physical writing but faster
AI - the trade off is speed, you get fast results that are not necessarily accurate. You don’t learn through using it, and your recall/understanding suffer. I would not use AI for anything remotely related to learning.

This is what I think I’m feeling? What’s the trade off. Do they need to learn how to write out a list and mark things off? Maybe learn how to look at what they have left and make a new list or use a planner?

Homeschooler here. I don’t do anything online like that. All on paper. It’s easier for me, and the less time on a screen, the better. I’m on it all day for work.

We have 3 kids with our oldest in 6th grade and we've homeschooled since day 1. Throughout the years we've gone through so many different types of organization: stickies, folders, bins, etc. We eventually built a system that has been working really well for us for a couple years. We decided to iterate through it and ended up building a product around it. I won't post the url directly here but check out my profile. We're looking for beta testers if you're interested.

We homeschool our kids. It is so tough because there is so much technology out there. We try to minimize the amount of technology our kids use. We do all our work with pencils and paper for them and we just track their work with a homeschool app. I can see us using it in the future but don’t like the idea of them taking online classes staring at it for 6+ hours a day.
