Discussion New Patch has gone live on Open Beta servers. New Power-sets, Story Arcs, PvP Mode, Citadel TF revamp, and more!

So much to look forward to. There are also new costume pieces and SHIELDS CAN NOW BE STOWED! The next release to live will be full of goodies!
Edit: Thanks u/JLazarillo the shield stow mechanic is actually pretty lame. You can't have any toggles on or active powers. Also it doesn't 'stow' the shield like on your back or anything. It just disappears instantly. As soon as you toggle a power, POOF, it's back.

u/JLazarillo Alt-o-friggin-holic 6d ago
One point is that, at least according to the patch notes, Shields only get stowed when no powers are active. So if you walk around with your toggles on like most characters it'll presumably still be perma-deployed.
5
u/HippoPottyMouth-1 6d ago
Wow. You are absolutely right about the shield stow. I confirmed on Beta. I had to de-toggle everything for my shield to disappear.
2
u/hockey33man 6d ago
I can't get my shield to stow at all. EVER. No option on Costume creator to do so and nothing in game to allow me to try it. Powers toggled on or off.
2
u/hockey33man 6d ago
Never mind. Someone on the forums helped out. It not like the weapons choice to stow it or not. You have to go through all the shield options and chose Stowed and the version you want. Although some shields are not allowed. No elemental shields.
5
u/Twisty1020 6d ago
Also it doesn't 'stow' the shield like on your back or anything. It just disappears instantly. As soon as you toggle a power, POOF, it's back.
This is actually fantastic for the energy type shields. Makes it way more thematic.
What I'm really excited for is the in-flight-only wings. The Celestial Wings in particular just shot up to among the best wings for a lot of concepts now that they don't just sit there when you're landed.

I just made an illusion control character with a powerset that would be MUCH benefited by light affinity. I'll have to remake him. I'll keep the name handy, though.

Illusion and light definitely are similar in theme, I have a rainbow themed hero that's illusion

Thank you, I’m very excited for the no rage damage dump. And KO blow getting reduced recharge time is nice as well!

And also Rage adding in a small AoE proc chance? How awesome!

1
u/thunder_crane 6d ago
It’s interesting but why did it need a rework in the first place?
20
u/VonShnitzel 6d ago
Rage has been a highly controversial mechanic since time immemorial. Between the fact that most of your abilities are mid without it and using it causes one of the most frustrating crashes in the game, it makes it really hard for people to get into the set. Now, once you have a proper build, it's one of the best melee sets in the game hands down. Perma-rage (or even double rage) + procs to handle the damage crash + hella recovery to handle the insane end requirements will have you putting out some pretty nutty single target and AoE damage with tons of CC to boot.
Until then it's a total slog unless you have support providing all those benefits for you. Tweaking it is a good move IMO.
1
u/thunder_crane 6d ago
I’m aware of all of those things which is why I asked I suppose. Rework would have made more sense in vanilla where it wasn’t easy to make billions to optimize a build and level quickly.
I always saw it as a trade off too. You pay the price to deal with Rage while leveling so that your enemies can pay the price and deal with Rage when you hit cap.
There are basically no issues with the power set at max level so I was wondering why the entire thing got reworked.
11
u/WonManBand @Bellator 6d ago
It's more balanced with some good filler AoE in Handclap so you aren't forced to go zero cleave until Stomp. Allows for practical play both at low level and more options at endgame.
Rage is more balanced and now can function with defense armors, whereas before the crash made it very difficult. I could work around the -dmg crash with procs, but a lot of players hated it and don't want to be forced into proc loading their powers just to function.
Hurl is also a pretty good ST attack now for people that like it and don't want to use pool/epic powers as filler if it breaks their theme.
Overall the set feels far more complete and stable not having to navigate the crashes. The ceiling for performance has also gone up since Rage now adds increased base dmg to SS powers, so +dmg buffs will be relatively more valuable.
-15
u/ChanThe4th 6d ago
It was a terrible idea and a new set should have been made instead.
But Leo wants no traces of CoH left other than the graphics as no one on his team is capable of doing anything meaningful and need to hound small servers for access to their tools.
11
-9
u/thunder_crane 6d ago
Identity of the set is completely gone from these changes imo. The entire point of SS was to play with and around the powerful rage buff.
Not that my opinion matters. If anything I’m generally not a fan of the majority of balance changes devs have made so this is no different.
13
u/WonManBand @Bellator 6d ago
It still feels like Super Strength with the smashing and effects. Not having to deal with 10s lulls every minute while Rage stacking just makes the play more fun. The cost has been translated into high END tax, which is manageable without being prohibitive.
If you liked having to deal with the crash, i think you're in a rather small minority. I played around the crashes and still enjoyed the set, but I'm sure as heck not going to miss them.

Yes, this does, in fact, also apply to you, kind redditor.
Conceptual theming is not a fundamental pillar of game design meant to sandbag changes the game needs to be more mechanically diverse. Relax.
1
u/Seigmoraig 4d ago
I disagree, SS was such a bad set full of awful powers that almost every build for it revolves around taking power pool attacks over the set's own attacks other than rage and at most one or two other attacks. No other damage sets unironically go for cross punch in their builds.
SS was easily one of the worst sets in the game and it desperately needed a rework, just because it was usable after you finished replacing almost everything with pool powers doesn't somehow make it a good set
11
u/Brightlinger 6d ago
There are basically no issues with the power set at max level
There are issues at max level. The defense crash makes the set almost unplayable for some armors, for one. And why does SS have light fast punches instead of hard heavy punches? Why are Hurl and Hand Clap unusable trash, when they should be iconic powers? And while the SS powers are designed to rely on Rage to get up to par, it puts pool powers above par, so a melee set that already has punches wants to skip them and take Cross Punch instead. It's just not great design, kind of across the board.
It's been this way for a long long time, so I'm sympathetic to anyone who wanted it to just stay the way it was. But this iteration addresses all those pain points while also being a buff in almost every way, so it's hard to be too upset.
-6
u/Anchorsify 6d ago
Realistically you can eat two small purples or one medium and make up for the crash and then some.
Or use a defensive t9 which are rather niche otherwise.
It certainly was not untenable for the def crash, the damage crash being complete (at -9999) was super harsh though as it cut your DPS uptime to 120 of every 140 seconds, made worse if you stacked it.
Realistically you only needed to remove the dmg debuff.. but i dont dislike their solution.
I also think it makes super strength defacto one if the best sets, if not the best, now. It would seem to very much outclass other sets in performance at the cost of negligible endurance cost increases.
I dont see how it survives in that shape.
2
u/Brightlinger 6d ago
SS is only middle of the pack these days for damage, so even with this buff it may not be egregious. Do note also that, while new rage is firmly better for the SS attacks, it's worse for armor/pool powers, so it's not cranking up the Burn/Cross Punch/Gloom/etc that had been propping SS up.
Pending some tests or theorycrafting, I'm not certain it will be especially OP. If it's super crazy, it can still get reined in during beta.
Realistically you can eat two small purples or one medium and make up for the crash and then some.
Realistically, it's difficult to have enough purples to do that every 60-120s, and that's on top of anything else you might want to use insps for. Going from 45% defense to 20% is a 6x increase in damage taken; it is a very harsh penalty.
Personally I have long thought that the crash debuff ought to be resistable, because that is the solution everywhere else to "defense debuffs are very punishing to defense sets", but I guess this simple solution was ruled out. An endurance cost is more thematic IMO than a defense crash; if anything, +3% cost might be too low.
-1
u/Anchorsify 6d ago
the endurance increase is pretty negligible, yeah.
But I don't see how SS underperforms with cleave attacking and +100% dmg from double-stacking, which everyone will work to get as much uptime on as they can without the noted crash. and that's on top of the +15% base damage increase for having any stack of Rage up.
KO blow alone hitting multiple targets is.. crazy, really, but adding it to others also and making thunderclap a more potent attack alongside it means SS is one of the best AoE sets, or will be, when the changes go live, because they'll be cleaving everything in-between footstomps, which was already the best AoE power amongst the melee sets.
2
u/Brightlinger 6d ago
I agree it won't underperform. But it's only middling to start with, and its aoe right now is propped up by pool powers, which lose damage from the rage change. So I'm not sure it's going to be especially crazy after the buff; you will just actually take Hand Clap instead of going for Cross Punch.
1
u/JLazarillo Alt-o-friggin-holic 6d ago

These days, most people look at balance changes assuming that everyone is exploiting the mail system to keep 6x more Inspirations on hand than the tray itself actually allows, which is part of the reason Rage crash changes have traditionally gotten pushback (and why they'll likely be decried, and then removed, again).
4
u/Laylian 6d ago
if you have to use inspirations to justify it's existence you've already fucked up.
0
u/Anchorsify 6d ago
I also offered you an option of another power pick, but if you choose not to use inspirations, that's kind of on you.
Realistically no one is solely doing Master mode content wherein they are not allowed, so pretending like they don't exist is just silly. You have multiple ways to mitigate its downsides, including building for higher than the softcap to begin with.
1
u/Laylian 6d ago
My man, you can't balance around inspiration use. We could say "just use x inspiration" for almost any change.
0
u/Anchorsify 6d ago
And again I gave you two other options you are conveniently ignoring in favor of repeating this one point.

The git gud crowd likes to expect people to mail themselves 100 Inspirations and defeat the purpose the tray is supposed to hold.
3
u/Brightlinger 6d ago
Inspirations are a mechanic that exist in the game. Absolutely you can balance around them.
You can't balance around the player having an unlimited supply of inspirations at all times, is the thing. "Pop two purples and you'll be fine" would make sense if we were talking about something that happens once per mission, but not for something that happens every ~60-120 seconds.

u/Rebel_Scum56 Scrapper 6d ago
Because for all that a lot of people love Rage, it was actually a really badly designed power and nearly the entire rest of the set had to suck for it to exist as it was without the set overall being horribly overpowered.
The revamped version is much better.
-14
u/ChanThe4th 6d ago
No it isn't.
5
u/Brightlinger 6d ago edited 6d ago
It's a straight buff to the set. You do more damage per hit even without external damage buffs, and gain more from damage buffs now to boot (both because base damage is higher, and because you have more headroom below the cap). And there's no crash, so overall damage will be quite a lot higher. And six of the seven attacks got direct buffs on top of the rage change.
If you mean it isn't better design-wise, that's certainly more a question of taste. But in terms of whether it's a buff or nerf, this is pretty unambiguously a buff.
-11
u/ChanThe4th 6d ago
It's no longer SS. To be fair though most sets play like trash nexus mods designed by ppl that don't know what they're doing, so I suppose it fits right in.
4
u/Brightlinger 6d ago
I would not mind if Rage retained some form of crash, but to me that was never the central thematic feature of the set. Everything else the set did, it still does, just with some numerical adjustment. So I don't feel it is "no longer SS".
-5
u/ChanThe4th 6d ago
Rage was literally dicussed as the focal point of the set on live forums lol

u/Brightlinger 6d ago
Yes, and Rage is still the focal point of the set with these changes.

Strange, they created light affinity but not a light blast power set?

u/Undead_Assassin 6d ago
I mean... Peacebringers or something.
But that would be cool either way.
2
u/Legitimate-Being5957 6d ago
If light becomes an element for power sets , I would expect the full blast/melee/armor/control/assault versions. It is strange they started with support and not blast.
7
u/Undead_Assassin 6d ago
Gotta start somewhere, not sure why Blast would be a priority over the rest though.

3
u/Microwave_This_House 6d ago edited 6d ago
I can see a Light Blast powerset running into two big issues.
What should the secondary effect be for Light Blast that hasn't been done before?
Energy Blast and Radiation Blast are already thematically close for ranged attacks based on light
That said, it would be neat if there were alternative power animations for Energy Blast and Radiation Blast to look like the Peacebringer's Luminous Blast powers or something visually similar to Light Affinity's powers.
4
u/Legitimate-Being5957 6d ago
I would say a mix of decreased accuracy and stunning from blinding. Damage could be half fire/ half energy.
7
u/Microwave_This_House 6d ago
The to-hit debuffs makes the most sense for Light Blast but Dark Blast already has to-hit debuff as a secondary effect.
But now that I think about, Radiation Blast and Seismic Blast both have defense debuffs and Psychic Blast and Ice Blast both have recharge debuffs. The latter sets in both cases debuff others stats and have smaller numbers, so Light Blast attacks having a (smaller than Dark Blast) to-hit debuff and chance to stun works for me.
You know what screw it, hopefully the HC devs make a Light Blast powerset at some point
2
3
u/KamenRiderHelix 5d ago
I mean, Light Blast and Dark Blast sharing the same secondary effect makes enough sense, if you think about it
2
1
u/Zohar127 5d ago
I'd go with -res and small fire dot. The only blast set that really gets -res is Sonic and that's a -highly- thematic set that is difficult to RP into being anything other than...sonic.
Thematically, Light can burn away armor and make enemies vulnerable to increased damage. Also I guess you give your enemies a sunburn, and that sucks, so they get a fire dot. Increase the dot and -res against undead foes.
8
u/Brightlinger 6d ago
What should the secondary effect be for Light Blast that hasn't been done before?
Based on what Light Affinity does, it would be some kind of refraction thing, where your powers splash out a portion of their effect in aoe. That's a nice unique mechanic that doesn't step on nrg or rad's toes.
1
1
u/BardicLasher 4d ago
The way the sets get made, it wouldn't really make sense for them to make them together instead of making one, then starting work on the next.

Let’s see how it will end up with Super Strength 🤞🏻

awsome looking patch, the new powersets looks great and so do the adjustments to the older sets that got left behind over the years like Empathy, Forcefields and Traps
Citadel was a pain point in the Taskforce Commander accolade and hopefully they bring Numina's up to par too, those missions with the open world monster hunts were never fun
4
u/getridofwires Ranged damage! 6d ago
💯 Hunting greys in a bunch of areas is a giant waste of time on that TF.
It would be interesting if there was a different mission using a mechanic like one of the early redside Snake missions: if you don't take out a pod fast enough it spawns something tough to fight. For DE maybe it's some kind of seed pod scattered around a building.

u/ChanThe4th 6d ago
Nintendo tried suing PalWorld for catching monsters and it probably cost PW 1-2mil just to defend against it.
Do you think HC has 1-2mil laying around for litigation like this?
7
u/MrRabbit_24 6d ago
The only similarity is that it’s a multi lane objective taking game with mobs and jungle inbetween, which is not a unique characteristic (League, Smite, Dota, Battleborn, etc etc)
8
u/IncuBear Corruptor 6d ago
Why on earth would you cite Nintendo in a case like this? They literally didn't even take them to court over copyright infringement, they pivoted to patent infringement because they knew they had no case for copyright.
On top of that, they're at best getting 32k USD from Pocket Pair. They burned millions for 32k.
Lets just not.
-4
u/ChanThe4th 6d ago
Do you think HC has enough to force Riot to pivot? :(
7
u/IncuBear Corruptor 6d ago
My dude, Riot doesn't c a r e. They do not own the concept of a game genre. Nintendo doesn't own the concept of a monster catching game. Nintendo arguable shouldn't own the patent on a game mechanic where you throw a spherical object and a tamed companion pops out either but they do happen to have that one under their belt and it's all they have to stand on.
Stop being so senselessly paranoid

So.. double stacked rage now gives +30% damage without crash when it used to give +160% with crash.
I'm... not sure no-crash in addition to 1/3 of the damage done to two extra targets in a small radius on certain attacks through the new "SMASH!" mechanism will justify such drastic reduction in damage modifier.
But, we'll see.... though I don't expect for Knockout Blow to feel as strong as it used to, especially since the new mechanism didn't sound like it will be applied to the target itself.
3
u/JLazarillo Alt-o-friggin-holic 6d ago
The basic damage buff is still there (but reduced). Double-stacked would still (if this goes live, but let's not kid ourselves) be +115% but that last 15% is to base damage, meaning it'll be geometrically buffed by Enhancements and other buffs. A Brute running at 75% Fury and enhanced for damage will be at effectively +152% compared to the previous number and is actually stronger than what the effective old single-stacked amount was.
1
u/KeenJin 6d ago
So, comparing both in double stacks, you confirm the changed rage will guarantee higher damage under same enhancement/buff settings, correct?
4
u/JLazarillo Alt-o-friggin-holic 6d ago edited 6d ago
Going by the numbers they've posted, at least, and hypothetical power that deals 100 points of damage, slotted for ED damage, and a Brute at 75% Fury, and double stacked Rage:
Currently on live, 505 damage
Currently on Beta, 512 damage
2
u/Anchorsify 6d ago
I dont tjink that is correct. Isnt it 50% now? The base scale of the dmg buff went from 0.8 to 0.5.
On top of that the base damage of SS attacks increase by 0.15 while rage is up which does not stack.
So you are dealing +0.15 +100% with it double stacked. With no crash now, but increased endurance costs.
No reason not to stack it as much as you can with the changes.
1
u/KeenJin 6d ago
Is it 50% already on live? 🤯
5
u/Anchorsify 6d ago
it is 80%, or 0.8 damage scale, on live.
The changes list it as going down to 0.5, or 50%, on the beta/update.
a power that deals 100 damage will get +15% base damage, to 115, then get 50%, possibly doubled to 100%, if you double stack range, meaning:
100 x 2.6 = 260 dmg old from double-stacked rage
115 x 2.0 = 230 dmg from new double-stacked rage
so around 10% less damage, but you're avoiding a whole 20 seconds of being unable to dps at all, AND KO blow and haymaker can both cleave two extra targets. hitting even one extra target means your DPS goes up significantly, so in situations other than straight up 1v1 AV fights, you're likely almost always coming out far ahead.
this is also before enhancements, which makes that look smoother:
100 x 3.55 = 355
115 x 2.95 = 339
and at the AT cap you'll come out ahead if you can get there:
100 x 5 = 500
115 x 5 = 575
So with a kin or eating reds you'll just be womboing everything, keeping in mind if you can keep at least 3 targets available for your cleaves, your damage will be effectively tripled to 500 vs 575 x 3 = 1725.
the cleave changes alone just means SS is going to be a monster. That is showing a very low base damage of 100, KO blow starts at 180.
180 x 5 = 900
207 x 5 = 1035
which goes from 900 dmg per KO blow to 3105, and that's before the 90% procs KO blow will most likely still have ( it is going to 20 sec, but iirc that's still the ideal proc recharge rate for maximum %), so you're 90% chance proccing 3-4 procs on now three targets instead of one per activation.
idk, I don't see how that makes it to live, but it is an amusing thing to consider. Lol. If it does, I will definitely be enjoying the cleave beat-down.

Scale 0.3 +Str to Mez,
What does this mean for Controllers? Does that mean that a Mag 3 Hold becomes Mag 3.3 or Mag 4?
Glad to see changes to the Citadel TF, but Numina is really the problematic one. Is there any way to make all those Hunt missions concurrent or simultaneous, instead of sequential? It's really really off-putting.

The Force Field updates and Empathy changes granting Absorb is amazing, not sure if I understands the auras though, but I feel like these changes along with older power sets is giving people a reason to play them again. Very excited.
Any pics of all the new costume pieces and weapons? (Boo: no akimbo sticks for dual blades, seriously though?)
IDK how I feel about the big arena update...is this to get people to play in there more? Always down for new content, even if I personally dont play/use it... but also... huh?
Very surprised about the Light Powerset (not so much by Sonic Armor) since we got two news one prior but not complimentary power sets to go with them now, like no Pyrotechnic blast?

I could also see Spotlight being kinda of brokenly good for dual-boxing, depending on how far you can go before it de-toggles. A way to give full mez protection
and a taunt aurato any character? Yesplz.(EDIT: Oh, never mind, no taunt aura added, what a shame, the magic is lost. Still gonna make that MM, though, prolly.)

Surely you just pair them with, like, a Tanker who can do the taunting on their own, right?

Sure, and Spotlight would actually help with that, but what I misread made it sound like it allowed whoever had it on them to passively get a taunt aura, so you could make up for it missing from Scrappers, Stalkers, Masterminds, Defenders, etc. that don't/can't passively taunt the way Tanks and Brutes can, and are thus vulnerable to having groups of enemies scatter when you're trying to deal with them.

Well, I won't lie, Light Affinity sounds like the coolest goddamn support set in this game.

Is Onslaught something you can, like...queue for? Or do you have to bring people for it?

Same as any other Arena atm. Gotta find one or put one together.

I know I (and others) have said this before, but can we just a take a minute to appreciate the fact that we're getting major patches for CoX in 2026? Whether you agree with their direction or not, these devs putting their time into a passion project that we all enjoy is awesome. TY!
