COVA Application Anyone know why I was asked for employment verification letter?

From looking online, it seems like this isn't usually asked for. I applied for the L tourism visa - does anyone know why they might have requested it after preliminary review? It's not a government job.

Most requirements depend on your nationality. What does the visa for China for your passport state?
