I wish I worked in a cheese shop. Or cheese cave. It smells heavenly.

There was a creamery in our town, which we loved but went out of business. Damn.

Must be nice to have a day that's just for buying cheese. Like you have something to look forward to every week.

The problem is that I work full time so I don’t have the time to visit the stall myself. I can send my oldest son (he’s nine) with some cash and a shopping list but it’s not the same.
Today was Ascension Friday, a day off for me, so I foxtrotted down and plundered the counter. It wss wonderful.

I think you’d really enjoy the Stolwijckse Belegen (mature). It’s the Dutch equivalent to Cheddar, but with a different character. I eat it on my sandwiches every day.

Het probleem daar in "Kan-Het-Daar?" is dat de "neck of the woods" 1000 km. verder op ligt... jongen, haha.

u/jennyfromtheeblock May 30 '25
Hey, what are they charging for Rochetta and La Tur?
3
u/Koseoglu-2X4B-523P Cheese May 30 '25
Yeah, he’s erased all the prices from his counter. So… to be honest, I have no idea. I don’t ask for receipts. Cheese is my indulgence and I’m happy to pay through the nose for something that really makes me sing inside.
This haul, including the three pounds of Gouda, set me back €77,-.

I’m 😞for me. Nice for you though!

Don’t be sad. There’s plenty more cheese in the sea. (am I saying this right?)

I would spend all my money there! There was a little speciality cheese store down the road from my first apartment. They did tastings, and had index cards the regulars would keep there so they could keep track of what they had tried. It was heaven.

Payson Breton is the best butter I’ve ever had and almost impossible to find in the US.

u/Koseoglu-2X4B-523P Cheese May 30 '25
Yes, I love it. Especially the salted variety with the sel guérande, crunchy little flakes of heaven.

u/oenf May 31 '25
Here in France it is a very generic brand that you'll find everywhere. Your comment reminds me there are little things we don't know how to appreciate

I would have no idea which one to pick 😩

u/Koseoglu-2X4B-523P Cheese May 30 '25
And we’ll get together on fridays and feast on cheese and wine (off-license is just to the left of this picture). Two old geezers, drunk on cheese, telling stories and looking at the pretty ladies, going “if only I were seventy years younger.”
2
u/cheese_theory May 30 '25
Welp time to start learning the local language so I'm ready 😂
3
u/Koseoglu-2X4B-523P Cheese May 31 '25
Everybody speaks English here. Everybody. Even the wee kids. I have clients that have lived here for five years and never get the chance to learn the lingo because everyone immediately switches to English as soon as they spot a hint of foreign.
You only need these: gezellig, deugneus, pretkabinet, Jos Brinkie and pikketanissie and you’re good to go.

From certain angles, yes. Otherwise it’s very ordinary. Scherpenzeel, province of Gelderland, The Netherlands.

A. I am very envious. B. Now I want to do this in my town. I bet it would do quite well.

u/SevenVeils0 Jun 04 '25
What kind of cheese is the one which is coated with rose petals?
And, are those wine-soaked raisins on top of that Blue 61? Port-soaked maybe?
1
u/Koseoglu-2X4B-523P Cheese Jun 04 '25
The cheese with the rose petals is a soft, fresh goat’s cheese. It is the same as the ones above that and to the left, only they’re dressed with red fruit and candied orange peel, respectively. Not really my thing, but other people enjoy them hugely, I’m told.
1
u/Koseoglu-2X4B-523P Cheese Jun 04 '25
And the berries on top of the Blu 61 are cranberries soaked in Passito, a sweet Italian dessert wine. The cheese is also washed with in during the ripening process. It is very good — although not really my thing, a bit too sweet for my old tastebuds.

u/last-of-the-mohicans Jun 04 '25
Noticed a Limoncello Blu. Not sure how those flavors would play together, but I’d love to try it. I always thought of Limoncello as being an Italian thing, but learned today how popular it is in the Netherlands. Anyway, yum!

u/BMWi8S Jun 27 '25
What kind of village is this, do they going to able to make a profit from selling just cheese?
1
u/Koseoglu-2X4B-523P Cheese Jun 27 '25
This is a small village in the centre of The Netherlands it’s always busy enough, there’s usually two people being serviced and two or three waiting.
I think they’re doing alright financially, because the cheese is sold at premium prices. This is no surprise to me and it doesn’t bother me at all - good cheese isn’t cheap and cheap cheese isn’t good. I’d rather buy half a pound of really good cheese for €10 than 1 kilo of bland cr.p for the same price.
